Understanding Fatigue:

  • Definition of fatigue: subjective sensation characterized by reduced capacity for physical and/or mental exertion.

Different types of fatigue:

  • Physical factors: physical exertion, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, dehydration, illness, chronic health conditions.
  • Mental factors: cognitive demands, stress, anxiety, depression.
  • Emotional factors: intense emotions like sadness, grief, frustration.
  • Environmental factors: extreme temperatures, noise, environmental stressors.
  • Lifestyle factors: unhealthy habits like excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, lack of exercise, overwork.

Combatting Fatigue:

  • Summoning motivation: intrinsic or extrinsic motivation as a powerful counterbalance to fatigue.
  • Strategies for shifting mindset and perspective, even in difficult circumstances.
  • Utilizing positive affirmations, seeking social support, being mindful of surroundings.
  • Inspiration from children, moments of clarity, and reminders of inner strength.

Framework for Combating Fatigue (P.M.P.M.P.M.):

  • Prioritize: Prioritize sleep and rest, establish a consistent sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine, take short breaks throughout the day.
  • Maintain: Maintain a balanced diet, eat regular balanced meals, include a variety of nutrient-rich foods, stay hydrated, limit caffeine, sugar, and processed foods.
  • Physical activity: Engage in regular exercise to boost energy levels and improve mood, choose enjoyable activities, break up long periods of sitting with short bursts of physical activity.
  • Manage stress: Practice stress reduction techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, progressive muscle relaxation, prioritize tasks, set realistic goals, seek social support.
  • Practice mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness practices into daily routine, such as mindful breathing, body scans, mindful eating, take moments to observe surroundings and cultivate gratitude.
  • Me time: Take time for yourself, even if just a few minutes, engage in activities that bring relaxation and enjoyment.
