Speaker 1:

Thank you, how you doing, everybody, and welcome in to Wisconsin Sports on the go with Trage. I'm your host. Trage, it is Wednesday, july. Is it still July? It's still July, it's still July. We're not to August yet. July 31st today, a great Wednesday here in the great state of Wisconsin or wherever you're tuning in right now, maybe up in Canada, I don't know. I don't know where you're tuning in right now, but hopefully it is a fantastic day there.

Speaker 1:

Lots of I mean, it is hot, it is hot, it is humid. This, I mean it's like on and off, you might get storms, you might not. I mean there's a lot of places in the state of Wisconsin that were having storms yesterday. Hopefully, nothing was damaged of yours. You're doing okay, everything like that.

Speaker 1:

Lots of big, I mean. It's like we can't get away from the storms. They're just constantly there right now. It seems like every day we have a chance of rain right now. So, other than that, though, we had a big day yesterday. Big, well, depending on who you ask and what team you're rooting for, but a big day was the MLB trade deadline was yesterday. Not a lot of huge moves happened around, but there was a lot of good moves, a lot of moves that were made, so we're going to get into the trade deadline today. I want to talk a little bit of Packers here to start us out, and then I mean see where the day takes us right, see where the day takes us. So a fantastic day. I got Autumn with me here. Autumn how are we doing Wednesday here? A great Wednesday.

Speaker 2:

Doing pretty good. Trajan, I agree it is hot outside, you can go outside and it feels wet and sticky, but other than that, I'm happy that the sun is shining and it's not snowing.

Speaker 1:

I don't know. I've been climbing around in some attics the past couple days and I could do with the snow. I could do with the snow. I was sitting up there. I was like, if it wants to just let loose with 60 mile per hour winds right now, I'd be okay, I'd get over it, because man oh man, working in some of these dairy barns in the great state of Wisconsin gets hot during the summer. Let me tell you, when you're up in the attics of these things, even worse, it's even worse. Yes, yes, some barns do have attics. I know it's baffling to some people, but they do have attics. It's not just always a haymow. Sometimes they have attics and well, I'm the lucky one who gets to go up in the attic that we're currently working at right now. So getting out of that. I don't want to talk about addicts all day long. I don't want to talk about work. I want to talk about some wisconsin sports there and looking at some packer news they did make. It was about six roster moves at the start of the second week of training camp. So I just want to look at some of those guys.

Speaker 1:

The Packers did add to the roster there or release First up. They signed cornerback Don Callis. They needed some depth there. I mean Robert Rochelle dealing with an injury, zion Gilbert on the way out. The Packers signed Callis there, a rookie out of Troy who participated in the team's rookie minicamp in May there. He spent one season at Troy after three standout seasons at East Central in Oklahoma there. So we're going to see a little bit of Don Callis there on the defense. Another and this is a name known to a lot of people in the state of Wisconsin if you're a fan of the Badger football team Peter Bowden there. The long snapper from UW went undrafted out of Wisconsin there but he was actually ranked one of the best long snappers in the 2024 class. He is going to be signed up by the Packers here and we'll see. I mean they released Bowdoin as of last Tuesday actually, so signing him back. Basically they made room for Jacob Eason. Now we see Jordan Love come in, so signing him back basically they made room for Jacob Eason.

Speaker 1:

Now we see Jordan Love come in, so Eason's out the door again. So now we add Bowdoin back, right, I mean, poor guy, he gets released, thinks that he has to find a new job, ends up getting his job back After we get Jordan Love back in the fold. Now Eason's gone. Now we add up Peter Bowdoin there, so we see that move there. Lj Davis also added into the cornerback room there.

Speaker 1:

Went undrafted out of Northern Arizona in 2023. Spent some time with Tennessee Titans during training camp for the 2023 season. He broke up nine passes, intercepted two others for Northern Arizona after transferring from Southern Utah there, so added to the roster there. They did release kicker James Turner. So this is telling us a little bit more about. Will Anders Carlson get the job, will he not? Well, they've limited that kicker room down to two now by releasing Turner. It is now a battle between Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph there. Carlson and Joseph had missed only two kicks to start camp. Turner connected on only 13 of 19. So the Packers well, weaned them off there.

Speaker 1:

I guess you can say Packers did release Henry Pearson there. We did see him. He was a fullback there for the Packers. He was entering year two after spending last season on the Packers practice squad. He's out just one week after training camp. Zion Gilbert was released like I said earlier there, undrafted free agent in the 2022 class, signed with the Packers practice squad in October of last year, was returned on a futures deal. He played in three games for the New York Giants as a rookie in 2022. So those are some of the bigger moves outside of I mean that's to start training camp as of this week, right Outside of the basically Jordan Love coming back right. Those are your big moves to start this week of training camp. I mean good stuff happening at training camp right now.

Speaker 1:

For Green Bay, I did see I've been seeing videos, twitter, everything like that Videos coming out of Green Bay and a lot of interesting storylines. The play of Rashawn Gary is I mean his ability to lead a defense right McKinney also in there now and then watching Romeo Dobbs cook Jair Alexander down the sideline for a catch. Well, you look at it one of two ways Is Jair sucking or is Romeo Dobbs getting that much better? I think watching the video, romeo Dobbs is just getting that much better and I'd love to see that, because if you can get Romeo Dobbs going, jaden Reed gives you what he had going last year there. And then I mean you add in Dontavian Wicks, who a lot of people are very high on heading into this next season. Watch out for the Packers receiver core there.

Speaker 1:

Not a lot of big names, not a lot of big money, but hey, this is an athletic young group of receivers who are growing with Jordan Love and it's only going to get better, right, only going to get better there. So love to see that coming out of training camp, lots of good things coming out of there and lots of good words coming from Halfley there and a lot of good words about Halfley and his defense. I mean we're seeing Rashawn Gary kind of thrive in the new defensive set there. So hopefully more good things to come out of training camp, love. I mean he looked a little shaky to start training camp, but that's what you expect. I mean he's just coming off, he's just coming back there. He looked a little shaky.

Speaker 1:

It already got the bears, vikings, lions fans all riled up, because I've seen posts all over the place where they're saying I saw one today. Remember when packer fans laughed at the vikings for paying an average quarterback 28 mil a year. Well, when you pay kirk cousins that kind of money, it's laughable. They said, yeah, karma is the real B word. So Jordan Love's career win-loss record he's sitting at 12-15. Okay, he's sitting at 12-15.

Speaker 1:

He just led the Packers to the playoffs last year. He led the Packers down to Dallas and spanked up on the Dallas Cowboys, and then he went to San Francisco Dallas and spanked up on the Dallas Cowboys, and then he went to San Francisco. And I mean, yes, he made a bad throw to end it, but there was a missed kick in there too which could have altered that game. So I'm not going to put that entire game on Jordan Love, but it's fun. It's fun because it makes me laugh when Vikings fans have something to crap on the Packers about, right. It makes me laugh when Vikings fans have something to crap on the Packers about. It makes me laugh when the Bears fans think they have a quarterback now in Gale Williams so they can tell us all about it. And Lions fans they think they found their savior in Jared Goff, so they think that they are high and mighty right now. It's not even my Packer fan talking, it's just my fandom talking, my just football fandom. I just hope Jordan Love is good, because then it makes every one of these I mean they just look like bozos then, and then it makes them cry because then they're like you had Brett Favre, you had Aaron Rodgers, now you have Jordan Love.

Speaker 1:

What are we going to do? You know, it would, would be something. It would be something there to see. I mean, I autumn as a vikings fan would it to you I mean, you know you don't like the packers very much so but would it to you be crazy if the packers hit on three straight quarterbacks? You started with brett farve, then you had aaron rogers coming to the fold and now you have Jordan Love and you just had I mean, as a Vikings fan, you just had to deal with that crap. For how many years now it's been crazy, how long it's been since the Packers have had a subpar to bad quarterback in that room where it's like they don't even have a shot.

Speaker 2:

I mean I think it's interesting, don't get, have a shot. I mean I think it's interesting Don't get me wrong I mean, being a Viking fan, we have yet to have a solid quarterback with us. So, like you said, Kirk Cousins, I mean I mean he was there, he was on a, he was on a Superbowl quarterback, where I think I and I I been seeing this throughout my feed is that Jordan Love could lead the Packers to a Superbowl this year. So I mean I I do find it really interesting, and maybe I don't know if luck is the right word we're just good I don't know about that.

Speaker 2:

You also said I don't like the packers very much and I I I despise the backers. Let's just make that clear on here despises the packers.

Speaker 1:

And yet those are the words she gave us. She wasn't hateful, she wasn't anything like that. She just ended it with I despise the packers. Like you could have just shot it all down. Said jordan, love's gonna suck, just accept it like that's what we need. We need some fire out of you I mean, I'm not gonna lie. I should say that she's telling us that, as a vikings fan, she believes jordan Love will be good. That is what I'm hearing right now. She truthfully believes Jordan Love is that next dude in the NFC North.

Speaker 2:

I mean, I think he's young and I think he's got a lot of growing to do, but I do think that he has a lot of. I do think he has potential to be a very good quarterback.

Speaker 1:

Wow, you hear this. You hear this. Vikings fans out there. You guys just have to take what Autumn is telling you right now and accept it. Jordan Love is the new owner of the Bears and he now runs the North. That's just how it is. Jj McCarthy, you should have stayed at Michigan. Your years are behind you right now. Minnesota will not be better with you. Jared Goff, dude, you went to a Super Bowl and you scored three points. I've had enough out of you two. And Caleb Williams I mean, he's going to spend more time picking what fingernail polish to put on than he is playing football. So Jordan Love runs the North. That's all you got to know. The pack is back. That's all I know. The pack is back. Will they hit on three straight quarterbacks? That is what is unwritten yet. That is what's unwritten yet.

Speaker 1:

Yes, I mean to me. I was a doubter. You guys know that if you've listened long enough, I was a definite doubter and he changed my mind. The second half of the season I I've seen a half a season. If he gives me a full season and it makes it and it drives the Bears fans just up a wall, because that's what it'll do, oh, that would be awesome, that'd be awesome. And then I mean, just for that, I mean, yeah, it's luck. I mean I can't say it's anything more than I mean. Well, are the Packers just that good at judging talent? I don't know. I don't say it's anything more than I mean. Well, are the Packers just that good at judging talent? I don't know, I don't know.

Speaker 1:

This is a guy who, when the Packers drafted him, I mean he was nothing, he was just a dude Like he's got good arm talent, he's got, you know, they like this about him and this was okay. But there was a lot of negatives too. That point you had aaron rogers and you were trying to push and now it's like, oh, you guys were thinking about this, you were thinking ahead, you were gonna have this guy sit behind aaron rogers, learn from rogers. Hopefully not the bad stuff, right, because rogers was uh, he went and sat in a dark room for a while. So we know about rogers. Hopefully he didn't teach him about the voodoo stuff. But just like you did with Rodgers when you had Favre and you didn't tell Favre he had to teach this guy, because Favre straight up told him, like I'm not teaching this guy and that's fine To me that's fine.

Speaker 1:

They still learn underneath you. They watch you, they see their tendencies, they watch you. They see their tendencies. They see how you call an offense. They see, they, they watch that, they learn and sometimes, honestly, I think that's the best thing you can do for an organization.

Speaker 1:

You see a lot of quarterbacks the bears will be a prime example this season where they kind of just throw a guy to the wolves. They just they throw them underneath the bus and they let them bus tires just roll over top and sometimes I mean it works out in the end. But there are careers and guys who just don't succeed because of that. You know they get ran over in their first year.

Speaker 1:

I mean look at Bryce Young coming out of Alabama, that was one of the smallest dudes that I've ever seen, smallest dudes playing in the NFL.

Speaker 1:

I mean just not that bulky of a guy. And I was really concerned that going to Carolina with a terrible offensive line that Bryce Young's going to take one hit and he's going to be done. And Bryce Young played okay in his first season, didn't have a lot of great weapons, didn't have a great scheme to work with great coaching. So we see Bryce Young kind of look iffy and now a lot of fans calling for Bryce Young to be gonzo. I mean the Packers, you can love them, you can hate them, autumn hates them, she despises them, like she said, but but you got to respect them. I mean, come on, come on, it's not just cheese up here, it's not just cheese up here, it's not just cheese and beer. We know how to grow quarterbacks, we know how to make quarterbacks, we know how to draft quarterbacks and right now we have Jordan Love in the fold highest paid quarterback, which I mean you didn't really want to pay all that money but in the end of the day, you had to.

Speaker 1:

You had to do something like that to keep this guy around because he is a talent and, end of the day, if he would have hit the free agent market after this season and the Packers didn't pay him, he's a hot commodity because there's a lot of teams that think they might be able to work with him right, a lot of coaches who think they might be able to work with him. So Packers did the right thing, locked him up, locked up their franchise quarterback. That's what you love to see. Keep him happy, keep packer fans happy. And now we just go kick the crap out of the nfc north. That's all that matters. That's all that matters at the end of the day there. So with that we got to get to our everybody's favorite segment of the show. We got to get to everybody's favorite, and that is Autumn's Tidbits. Maybe I can find a good intro to it uh, we're going to talk about the olympics today.

Speaker 2:

So, going into the team usa, we have simone bios, who crowns herself as the most decorated american Olympic gymnast, with eight Olympic gold medals. She has five gold, one silver and two bronze. I do have to say her husband, jonathan Owens, made an adorable post. He was there supporting with their family for her. She's just doing amazing and killing it out there, along with the rest of the USA team with that. Then we have Katie Ledecky, who absolutely dominated in the 1500 meter relay for women's swimming and won by over 17 seconds. She will compete for the gold medal on Wednesday, so today she'll be competing for the gold medal. Today, men's swimming grabs the silver medal. In the four by 200 meter free relay, the USA women's rugby wins their first medal in Olympic history. They upset Australia for the bronze medal with the equivalent of 99 yard touchdown. As the time expired.

Speaker 1:

That's crazy finish. That is a crazy finish right now. I mean she's no, she's no Michael Phelps with 28 medals there. She's no Michael Phelps, but I there, she's no Michael Phelps, but I mean nothing but impressive. Nothing but impressive.

Speaker 1:

I'm not going to go as far to say as adorable, with the Jonathan Owens leaving, going down and, you know, going across whatever you want to say and going to watch Simone Biles there. I'm not going to use the word adorable, but cool to see and great. You know, I don't want to say this Kudos to the Bears for letting Jonathan Owens leave training camp and go over and support Simone Biles. That'll be the only time I will ever say kudos to the Bears, except for when they finally dump Caleb Williams after he sucks. Then I can say kudos to him again. Other than that, I'm not going to say kudos to the Bears, except for when they finally dump Caleb Williams after he sucks. Then I can say kudos to him again. Other than that, I'm not going to say kudos to the Bears ever again. But that was great to see. So I agree with that. Not exactly adorable in my mind, but great stuff there I mean.

Speaker 1:

So we see a lot of medals here. We see a lot of medals going on Autumn. I mean looking at the medal counts in the Olympics. Now there's a lot going on. We're watching right now, as we're recording. Right now, we're watching table tennis. We're watching some crazy table tennis going on right now and I tell you what. I could not take these guys. I thought I was a pretty good table tennis player myself Not those guys. Not those guys there. So, autumn, what are we seeing right now? Metal counter I believe somebody's got a counter out there. What are we seeing right now? Who's in first? Who's trailing up? What are we seeing?

Speaker 2:

So, according to ESPN, the USA is in first with 26 medals, second is France with 18 medals and in third is China with 14 medals. Currently, japan is leading in gold medals right now For individual medal leaders. They are leading. Usa is leading in gold medals right now For individual medal leaders. They are leading. The USA is leading in silver and the USA is also leading in bronze.

Speaker 1:

We got to pick it up. We got to pick it up there. I mean, the great Ricky Bobby once told us if you're not first, you're last right. And here in the USA we don't piss, nothing but excellence. So I don't know what's going on over there in Paris, but somebody's got to figure something out. That's all I know. It's probably because I'm watching this guy from Japan over here and he's in archery right now and he's whacking it. So I don't know. I mean we probably can't beat him in archery right now. Who do we send over there? I mean, it's okay, it's okay, it's okay, we're going to be fine. We're going to be fine there. Everything is going to be okay on that end.

Speaker 1:

So, lots of good stuff there. Autumn had a great day of tidbits. We're going to work on the intro music into the tidbits. That was bad intro music. I got this whole. You know this little box on the side here where it gives me all these tunes that I can play, and you know there's a bunch of them on there. I just I've never played them before so I was just like scrolling through. I was like the heck with it. I'll just flip this one on today. See what happens. It was a bold one, right? Maybe if it was more of like a I don't know, like a BA moment, you know, if it was something like you know that kind of stuff happening, then maybe that tune would work. But not a great one, not a great one. Autumn's looking at me like why are you playing that tune right now? I'm sitting over here like I don't know. I didn't know what was going to come out of the speakers there Either way. Either way, good stuff there, great tidbits. We got lots to get to.

Speaker 1:

Mlb trade deadline was came, gone, happened, done yesterday, 5 o'clock gone and I mean I sat there. I sat there all day and you know I have zero service. I was telling you, I was working in an attic. I got zero service, zero service. So I got to keep coming out. I got to keep coming out Because yesterday, I mean, I was right on my phone. I was like I got to see it. I was right on my phone, I was like I got to see it, I got to see this trade. I just, you know, you get that almost like the hope, where it's like I'm going to walk out and the brewers are going to make a move and they're going to get this guy or they're going to get this guy. You know they're going to make this deal and they're going to get Flaherty, or they're going to get this guy or that guy. 11 o'clock nothing. 1 o'clock nothing. 2 o'clock nothing. Got to 5, I was like maybe they had a deal that didn't process yet Nothing and I'm just like, okay. So we got Nick Mears, we got Frankie Montes and we got Aaron Savalli. Now we've seen Aaron Savalli a little bit now with the Brewers, so we've seen what we've seen with him, frankie. We've seen Aaron Savalli a little bit now with the Brewers, so we've seen what we've seen with him, frankie, we haven't seen yet.

Speaker 1:

Now, if you look at the words from what Matt Arnold always tells us. Right, you want a guy who you're going to bring into the fold, who is going to fit with team chemistry? Right, he's not going to ruin the team chemistry. That's what we always hear. Can't have that guy come into the locker room? Okay. So does that? I mean, does that almost affect what the Brewers can and can't do?

Speaker 1:

If you go into a trade deadline with that motto? If you're so hesitant to bring in, let's just say Nick Castellanos. Right, castellanos has bounced around a little bit in his career. He's, I mean, a power threat. He's not a great average, I believe, right now, but you know he's still a solid bet, right, if he was bouncing around. We know he's a clubhouse problem at times. Right, he's a hothead.

Speaker 1:

Would you not pursue a guy, say you needed a right fielder or a DH? Would you not pursue a guy like that simply because he would ruin team chemistry, because his bat wouldn't overweigh the problems that he can cause? I don't know. Right, that one puts me at a crossroads, because it's like I want to see the Brewers make moves for good players. But I can also understand the team chemistry factor where you don't want to say upset the team.

Speaker 1:

Because when a team has great—I mean, look at the Arizona Diamondbacks last season I mean they made it all the way to the World Series. That team had no business being in the World Series. That was, I mean, a good team right, but they weren't stellar. I mean they beat the Brewers, they ended up beating Dodgers right, that wasn't a great team, but they were built different, right. It's also the old saying right, built different. That team was put together differently. They were a young group who was brought up together. They played with each other, they stuck it out together. You know, good, bad, whatever. It was Okay, that works.

Speaker 1:

But when I look at this Brewer team and I say to myself, okay, where's the biggest hole we talked about it yesterday the biggest hole Starting pitching, now, I wasn't sitting here saying to myself I want the Brewers to go grab this ace pitcher who is going to be the next cheese in Milwaukee. I wasn't expecting that, but what I wanted to see was the Brewers go and get, I mean, good pitchers, average pitchers, jack Flaherty pitchers right, the Dodgers ended up with Jack Flaherty. And I want to talk about that deal here in a little bit, because that deal absolutely irritated the crap out of me because the deal that was made the top prospect, the top the headliner guy in that deal. I am baffled that the Brewers couldn't answer that. I am baffled because that just blew my mind so I want to talk about that a little bit later.

Speaker 1:

But a guy like Jack Flaherty you know I'm not the Fetty deal that was a tough one because you saw that was a three team deal and ended up to get Fetty right. Cardinals got Fetty, they ended up with Tommy Pham too. They had trade-off Edmund there and then the Dodgers were flipping guys left and right. So we saw how that all worked out. That was going to be tough. Crochet was going to be tough. We saw the White Sox didn't even deal crochet at the uh deadline there. But there was a lot of starting pitching options.

Speaker 1:

I'm not saying that I wanted the Brewers to spend. You know, one time I'd love the Brewers to unload the farm, right. I just if they traded away the farm and just went all in one time. I don't know if I would be hurt. I don't know if I'd be upset. I'd let it ride. You know, fetty didn't bother me terribly because, yes, fetty's having a great season, but Fetty's a journeyman. He's not like. He's this. You know, I've been in one spot and I've been doing this for the longest time. He has been bounced around. He's a journeyman pitcher. He's older, right, he's 31. I mean, he's an older pitcher and he's having a great season. But how do you know that that's going to translate for right. So the Brewers, like I said, they get Frankie Montes, right. And Montes, I mean you look at his stats from this season. It's not, it's not blow you out of the water stats, but Frankie's got good stuff. He has good stuff.

Speaker 1:

Now we're also shooting up a prayer again for the pitching lab for the brewers to figure something out. It's with him, right? It's a hope. It's a hope that they can figure out montis there now trading away. So in that deal we saw joey weimer. He was sent out. We saw jacob junis. Now the weimer one. What are you going to do with Weimer? I mean honestly, I mean Autumn, were you that? I mean Joey Weimer's gone? Is it detrimental to you, like the world's? You know it's bad news.

Speaker 2:

I'll be completely honest, I forgot that Weimer was on the team. If I'm being honest, we just haven't seen much of him. I saw him as like that team when council was still there, his like little, I guess, prodigy, and then he wasn't performing. They sent him down. He came back up, he just wasn't performing and then just at that point there were some other young talent that came in and just overtook it. So I I was not upset at all, I was. I mean, I was like wow, I guess I didn't expect that, but it wasn't like sad to see him go really.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and I mean you know, Joey Weimer, I it's the same thing I said when Keston here left. Super nice guy. I hope nothing but the best for the guy. I honestly hope that he goes to Cincinnati and I hope he figures it out. Like honestly, as much as it would suck because he'd probably do it against the Brewers, I hope that he figures it out because I mean, at the end of the day this is still a baseball player and his personality, he is a great person in hindsight. So I really do hope for the best for Joey Weimer there.

Speaker 1:

But the other one, the main, the main cog in this trade was Junis for Montas. Now Junis is having autumn. Do you got the? You want to see if you can find the stats on Jacob Junis this season. Junis is having a decent year. He's having a decent year. He transitioned into the bullpen for the Brewers there and he's having a decent year. He transitioned into the bullpen for the Brewers there and he's having a decent season there. Autumn's pulling up the stats right now. We'll know in a second here the true stats there on Jacob Judas.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, for the 2024 regular season. He has four wins, no losses, ERA of 2.42.

Speaker 1:

So I mean, Judas is looking, a he's pretty looking, pretty darn good looking pretty darn good.

Speaker 1:

And you put him next to that frankie montes. Uh, stats there and I believe I had them somewhere around the boat here four and eight with a 5.01 era right now. Not great, not great news if you're looking era era wins and losses. But like I mean, no, junis has been out for a while, junis hasn't been a starter, junis has been in the bullpen, but if I put the two guys next to each other it's almost like it was a sideways trade, right, I truthfully don't believe the Brewers got better or worse with Junis walking away. Now maybe it proves me wrong if Montes does absolutely nothing, but I believe the Brewers might be able to fix Montes. And back to what I was getting at before there with the clubhouse guy listening to what Reds players the Reds manager there, bell, had to say after Montas left was you know this was a great guy. He was instrumental to the team, not on his performance on the field, but you know they lost a true family member and a true fantastic teammate when Montas left. Like it was almost a heartbreaking moment for him to see Montas leave and that tells you okay. Yes, the stats aren't fantastic and you wish they were better, but you're getting a guy who isn't going to disrupt the team chemistry, and if you can fix him, that will be great for the Brewers. So I'd love to see that aspect of it. Everything else, you're just hoping that the Brewers can figure it out and get him into true form there.

Speaker 1:

Nick Mears I believe he pitched just the other night for the Brewers there and I mean looks solid, looks solid in his debut with the Brewers. Not anything crazy. Two strikeouts, zeros across the board. A good outing for Mears there, a good one to start with the Brewers there. Outside of that, we saw the Brewers grab Savalli early on. A good pitcher. Nothing crazy in that one either. So I mean the Brewers, they kind of sit stagnant. They kind of sit stagnant there in this trade deadline and we're going to talk more about it here in a minute there. But before we move on, we got to get to Autumn's fact of the day and has one vending machine for every 40 people.

Speaker 1:

They are known as the vending machines. Like what are we talking? Like, are we talking snacks? Are we talking drinks? Like, what kind of vending machines are talking? I think that's that would be the bigger topic to know. Like am I getting? If I like? Are these vending machines those crappy ones that give you like the deli sandwiches that you don't know if it's good or not? Or they give you like the half-cooked hamburger in there that you got to warm up in the microwave. What do you get when you go to a vending machine? Does it vary? You know, I don't know. I don't know that is, but that is an interesting fact of the day right there, A vending machine for every 40 people. There's a lot of people in Japan. That's all I know. There there's a lot of people and that means there are a crap load of vending machines.

Speaker 2:

If I ever go to Japan.

Speaker 1:

I tell you what I want to visit the vending machines. I don't care about the sightseeing, I don't care about anything else, I want to just walk vending machine to vending machine and just see it all, see all the vending machines. What do they got? What do they got over there in each vending machine? So great stuff there, great stuff in our fact of the day there. So, trade deadline, trade deadline talk. Autumn has a list for me. She has a list for me of trade deadline winners and losers. So, autumn, who were our trade deadline winners?

Speaker 2:

According to Sporting News, the trade deadline winners were the marlins mariners and the blue jays blue jays unloaded a lot of contracts that they didn't really need.

Speaker 1:

So do the marlins. I mean they got brian de la cruz there. They added in some decent prospects there, but they were stuck in. You know, you look at the Blue Jays and the way that everybody wraps it up is they're kind of stuck in a bad spot heading into 2024 with contracts. Now, unloading a couple of those bad ones there, that helps them out a lot there. Marlins it seems like Jazz Chisholm was just never a a solid I mean just a solid piece for him there and I mean unloaded piece in that bullpen. Josh Bell is gone, rodgers is gone, uh, tanner Scott's gone. Pook is gone there for him. I thought you know, honestly I can agree with that one the winners there of the trade deadline, I would say the Dodgers. Adding Flaherty was an underrated move for the Dodgers there.

Speaker 1:

I mean not a lot of people talking about that one, but that was a guy that I mean like you guys know, I wanted the Brewers to even jump in on because I thought you know, flaherty, he's got a lot in the tank yet this guy can still be a solid postseason pitcher for you. And well, dodgers, get him. So you know, I agree, I can agree with that list there of winners from this trade deadline.

Speaker 2:

So what do we got Losers of?

Speaker 1:

the trade deadline.

Speaker 2:

The losers of the trade deadline were the R, the astros, the red socks and the twins nobody did nothing.

Speaker 1:

That's, I mean, that's the. That's the big kicker with those, those four I would say is well, you know the rays. I can't say the rays didn't do nothing because they traded away randy. You know, they made moves here and there they added a couple pieces. So I'm not saying the Rays didn't do anything, but they didn't do anything to get better. Astros, same boat, didn't do anything to get better in their respect there. Red Sox, they kind of sat still. So did the Twins. So looking at just those four teams, it's big on Didn't do a whole lot. Now who, if where, would I put the brewers?

Speaker 1:

I'll be honest, I'm surprised they didn't make the list I know I wouldn't say that they lost the deadline, because I would say if you lost the deadline you either didn't do anything or you traded away everybody, or you got worse. Essentially, I don't believe the Brewers got worse. I think Nick Mears is going to be a big upgrade in that bullpen. I think he's going to be an upgrade in the bullpen. He's got an electric fastball. He's got underrated, breaking stuff. He's a solid arm. So he didn't get worse in that aspect. Frankie Montes has still got good stuff. You just got to get him working right. So if the pitching lab can fix Frankie, I do like that deal. I do like that deal. I do.

Speaker 1:

And Savalli, I don't know with Savalli yet. I mean he's got a home run issue. He's got a home run issue. Everybody on this Brewers roster does. And that has something interesting to do with William Contreras, because I have seen William Contreras calls for the most hard pitches in baseball. Out of all catchers calls for the most hard pitches. Now, does that have something to do with the lack of success for these Brewers arms and why they're giving up so many long balls? I'm not going to say that. You know that's the underlying factor, because it could be the Brewers pitchers on some spots are missing that or they're missing those spots and then giving up the long ball, but it could definitely have something to do with it. It could definitely have something to do with it. So, you know, maybe getting into the second half here some of the pitchers I mean maybe the home run ball, the, that stat goes away right and the Brewers don't give up as many and it gets a little bit better in that aspect there. But we'll wait and see.

Speaker 1:

We'll wait and see on that. So would I rank the Brewers as winners or losers? I'm going to put them more in the middle ground. I'm going to put them in the middle ground. They didn't lose it. They didn't lose the deadline.

Speaker 1:

Would I have loved to see them make a move in the starting pitching room. That was a for sure. And I think that's the big thing that troubles me, troubles a lot of Brewer fans out there is troubles my dog too. He's back there hacking up. He's hacking up thinking about these trades not happening that he wishes would have happened, that we were talking about yesterday there. I mean it's just crazy, he's frustrated, he's just irate back there. Poor Yeltsin back there. But I mean I guess what I would say is you know, I would have loved to see a move for the Brewers. That was we're upgrading and we're getting a for sure guy like a Flaherty right. I mean you can't tell that this guy is just going to automatically come into an organization and he's going to have the same success that he had elsewhere. You can't say that, but you can say that we've seen success this full half a season with this team. We're expecting to get that here. Frankie has not had that with the Reds. The Brewers are hoping to get that with bringing him in. Flaherty has had success with the Tigers. The Dodgers know what they're getting with Flaherty, are hoping they know what they're getting with Flaherty.

Speaker 1:

I think that's where a lot of Brewer fans kind of get distraught with this whole trade line business or trade deadline business. Is that factor of it there. So I think that was the big thing I took away from the deadline. Brewers kind of sit stagnant in there. They do get some starting pitching help back in. Joe Ross he has returned to the Brewers. You know it not not great first outing there for Joe Ross against the Atlanta Braves as we saw him give up five runs there in five innings against the Braves. So not a great first game back there for Joe Ross. But hopefully he settles himself in there and it's the hope right, it's the hope there. Frankie Montes it was according to Pat Murphy there Frankie Montes won't pitch for the Brewers until the National Series this weekend. So we will see Frankie Montes this weekend with the Brewers there already. So hopefully, hopefully the Brewers can turn around Frankie Montes there and we can see some good stuff in that aspect outside of the Brewers. I mean we've talked about Fty, we talked about tommy fam there.

Speaker 1:

Other moves that we saw in the nl central. We saw the pirates made some moves and I thought that was surprising. I thought that was surprising. I didn't know they'd make moves. They acquire isaiah kiner falafel from the Blue Jays there. He hasn't been playing the greatest this season there, but I mean 292 with seven home runs in a Jays uniform. Not bad. Not bad. He's dealt with some injury problems, but Kainer-Falefa on his way to the Pirates Also.

Speaker 1:

They add on Brian De La Cruz. So looking at him right now I was just seeing what Brian De La Cruz is doing. 258, 258 right now. Solid for De La Cruz there. So the Pirates bolster up the starting lineup. Cardinals get a little bit better. Cubs were all over the place. They traded away Letter, they got Paredes. They traded away Christopher Morrell and got Paredes. He's got more control. The Cubs are like in a half rebuild half. We might still have a shot in this race kind of mode right now. The Reds kind of sat stagnant in this one. But we saw the NL Central active and I don't know it's going to be a who can stay hot race. Now to the finish here in the nl central so with that I mean we're gonna hear more coming out of the trade deadline.

Speaker 1:

We're gonna hear more about it as the week goes on, so we're gonna definitely cover that as this week goes on. So with that, that's about all we got for today.
