Speaker 1:

Welcome everyone to Transformation Talks. The intention of our podcast is to provide tips, strategies and inspiration to transform workplaces, communities and lives. I'm Sharon Wilson. I'm the co-founder and chief mindset and growth officer at Transforming Culture Consultants, and this is the first in my episodes on mindset management. This is a subject that's near and dear to my heart and it's a bit of a divergent topic from the podcast topics we've created so far. But we just want you to start to consider how mindset management can help to create and sustain a more empowered workplace culture. Just start to open the door to the possibilities.

Speaker 1:

I've been working in the field of mindset management for over 25 years, so I'm going to share some thoughts about how it can support you and that you manage others. Support others to feel more empowered, no matter what's going on around you. Several years ago, during a routine test, I was diagnosed with a large abdominal polyp and my surgeon wanted to schedule surgery to remove it. I wasn't having any negative symptoms and, having worked with mindset management methods like intentional visualization, hypnosis, reiki and others, I asked if I could have 30 days before the surgery to eliminate the mass without surgery. After some convincing, my surgeon went along with it. I had read a book called the Intention Experiment some years before and had been coaching myself and clients using some of the tools in this book on how to effectively focus our thoughts and feelings toward a solution we want to create. We all had amazing success stories of healings on all levels, including physical healings that had no medical explanation, as well as more of the run-of-the-mill kind of manifestations like unlikely promotions, raises, job opportunities, unexpected windfalls of money, sales out of the blue I mean you name it, but I'm not here to convince you any of this works. Just share some of my experiences and some suggestions on how you may be able to begin to leverage the power of your thoughts and feelings to affect outcomes in ways that seem to defy logic. So back to my story. After 30 days I returned to my surgeon's office for a test to see what had happened to the size of the mask. I was scheduled for surgery the next day. The insurance had approved it based on my previous test results, and when the test was complete, my surgeon was in disbelief. The mask was no longer there. She canceled the surgery. That would have taken me a few weeks to recover from the abdominal surgery, so my husband and I decided to take an impromptu vacation, since I'd prepared to be off for a few weeks.

Speaker 1:

In the work I do as a mindset mentor, I support clients to better understand the power of their mind and how they can leverage that power to reduce stress and anxiety, transform beliefs and behaviors that are sabotaging them from accomplishing their dreams. How to tap into the power of others' minds to influence them for the greater benefit of all concern. How to be more effective communicators based on how they focus their thoughts, and how to use the power of visualization to accomplish their goals easier and faster than logic would suggest, and a lot more. When I started my business over 20 years ago, coaching executives and entrepreneurs, I replaced my high corporate income in 90 days using these tools. So my intention in our Mindset Management Podcast episodes is to open the door to some simple things you can do that will support your ability to use the power of your mind for more success in all areas of your life and work. Today, in this episode, I want to suggest you start to apply some foundational concepts. I know once you start to apply these in earnest, you'll eventually see amazing results. Now we know when companies help their employees find balance, they're more productive, more engaged and better coworkers.

Speaker 1:

Despite this, approximately $17 billion is lost in productivity annually when organizations fail to support employees' mindset. In other words, companies are profoundly damaged when employees have a negative mindset. However, not all companies are hurting right now. Many are thriving with record profits through the great resignation and all the challenges that we face, and one of the reasons is their culture. Because who wouldn't want to work at a place where employees feel valued, respected and heard? So what do companies like Google and Apple have in common? Both have taken a progressive approach to workplace culture by implementing mindset management techniques into their employees' daily habits to increase productivity and enhance workplace culture. Google found that mindset management practices make employees more eager to learn, challenge themselves and experiment, which boosts potential and performance.

Speaker 1:

You may be asking yourself why does mindset matter for success? Well, it influences how you think, feel and behave in any given situation. It means that what you believe about yourself impacts your success or failure. According to Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck, your beliefs play a pivotal role in what you want and whether you achieve it. Another study by Stanford University said productivity can increase by as much as 12% when employees feel happy and engaged at work. Another research was on health impact that was published in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine showed that employees with a positive mindset have lower rates of stress-related illnesses, leading to fewer sick days and increased overall well-being. Another is innovation and collaboration. A survey conducted by Gallup found that teams with high levels of engagement are 21% more productive and 22% more profitable. This highlights the critical role mindset plays in fostering innovation and collaboration within organizations.

Speaker 1:

Now, if you're, like me, a recovering cynic when it comes to mindset practices, you have to start small and you need to build this to be a habit. It's now so much more mainstream and progressive organizations are embracing mindset management. Here's one of much more mainstream and progressive organizations are embracing mindset management. Here's one of the first things I work with clients on, and this may sound really simple, but it takes practice and discipline. Start to focus on what's working.

Speaker 1:

In any situation, no matter how dire situations are, you can focus on what's working or what things you can be grateful for. I recently interviewed a quantum scientist who validated that our thoughts are like radio transmitters and have a frequency associated with them and the feelings connected to them. Thoughts of anger, worry, fear all line up with thoughts. People, situation are matched to that, like that radio transmitter and receiver. Likewise, when we focus on thoughts of gratitude, situation are matched to that, like that radio transmitter and receiver. Likewise, when we focus on thoughts of gratitude, we emit a frequency that matches up. This is science. If you need to have something to validate this, check out the book by Valerie Hunt, the Intention Experiment. The book outlines many studies and research done that might interest you.

Speaker 1:

Now, I'm not much of a researcher these days when it comes to mindset management. I was in marketing research in one of my corporate roles as I rose up the corporate ladder and at TCC Cindy is our expert researcher from her years as a standout college professor and creating evidence-based curriculum. But let's talk about how to apply this concept of activating gratitude in the workplace. You can start with meetings. At the beginning of the meeting, start with asking what is working, or have everyone focus on one thing they're grateful for on the team. So many meetings start right off with what are the problems, the issues and how can we solve them. Do you know that when you focus on the problems and think about what's not working, you don't have access to the part of your brain that is solution-oriented? When I was in corporate HR.

Speaker 1:

We called the essence of this tool appreciative inquiry. Each day, write down at least one thing you appreciate about that person. If you can list a few each day, that's even better, but it can be really small, like you like their smile or they're organized. Just find at least one new thing each day and stick with it. In my experience with clients, within 30 days you'll feel a change in your perception or attitude of that person and you may also see that person responding differently to you as well. I'll go into more ways you can influence people with your focused thoughts in another episode, so stay tuned. I'm grateful to be with you on this journey as your Mindset Management Mentor.
