Visualize the striking difference between a golf ball making a temporary mark in the sand and one that stirs the entire ocean, and learn to align yourself with those who strive not just for or against, but alongside you in your mission.

We're peeling back the layers of leadership personas, from the well-intentioned 'Mother Mary' to the daunting 'Drill Sergeant Darlene', uncovering how these characters shape your team's spirit and performance. Recognize the nuances of each persona — the nurturing, the evasive, the confrontational, and the indecisive — and how they can either harmonize or disrupt the workplace symphony. We'll also explore the metaphorical masks we wear, discussing how they reflect our inner chaos and can either assist or hinder our fit within a leadership constellation. Speaker 1:

Welcome. Today we are going to be diving into what is the difference between making a dent versus creating a ripple effect. So if you are all in for up leveling how you can make more ripple effects in the world and, um you know, quit creating as many dents and go all in, today is going to be right up your alley.

Speaker 2:

Yeah. So if you ever wondered, how do I create those green light leaders in my salon that create a ripple effect, we're going to really dive into what characteristics to look for, what are the masks that people wear and how, at the end of the end of the day, can we really enroll people that really want to be part of our mission and carry out something incredible?

Speaker 1:

Yes, and so before we dive into all of those exciting things, we just want you to envision. Envision that you are standing by the ocean. You know. Think about the most beautiful beach that you've ever been to, whether it's your local lake or it's a beautiful ocean somewhere, maybe in Fiji, you know, you can imagine that there's a big area of sand and then there's a big area of water. And you know, we like to look at this almost like. You know the different types of people we get to serve, like some people are like the sand and some people are like the ocean.

Speaker 1:

And you're standing there, you're looking out on all of this and you have a golf ball, and your golf ball is like your words, your wisdom, you know the ability to help people grow. And when you take that golf ball and you throw it in the sand, what it does is it creates a dent, you know. And when you take that same golf ball and you throw it into the ocean, what it does is it creates a ripple effect. And so when you're thinking about this, you know, I think what's powerful is you know, we all have tons of golf balls that we can throw out, and you know, that's why we're learning. That's why you're listening to this podcast today. It's because you're interested in growing and becoming the best version of yourself, so that, hopefully, you can take this knowledge and wisdom and pass it on to somebody else.

Speaker 1:

And so today we're going to be diving into. You know how do we? You know, not that a dent is a bad thing. It still, you know, leaves some sort of an impact. But you know, when you throw 100 or 1000 golf balls into the ocean and you think about the ripples that it can have versus a tiny little dent if you were to do the same thing in the sand. You know how do we create more of that inside of our leadership so that we really can change our industry, change the world, change. You know so many things about ourselves and so many others, and we think we've got some amazing tools on deck for you today so that you can explore how to create a larger ripple effect around you.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and so you might have encountered this before I know I have is you're like, okay, you hear that you've got to have leaders in your business to get to the next level. Like it's hard for one person to do it. Some know, some of the stats say it's like seven people to one leader or 10 people to one leader, and so, like you've ever tried to grow a leadership team and you're like what the heck is going on? You know you pass all this information along to them and then you see them take this information and translate it and you're like, okay, that's not, that's not quite what I was meaning or not quite what I was saying. It's like there goes the sand right, and so there's.

Speaker 2:

Sometimes you take that information and they're like, oh, you're like, wow, they've made it even better. And so that's really what we're looking at today is like how can you find those right people so that when you give them that information, they really can ripple that out into the space of the salon, but also into the space of the world? So we're going to dive into like how do you spot those green light leaders? And you know we've talked about the the lights of life before is, you know, a red light leader is someone that's probably going to work against you. Like that's, if you've ever seen a stop sign.

Speaker 2:

I know you have it's flashing red. That means run really fast If you realize that you know someone is working against you and your salon company and they are in that red light of life, like that is the best gift of release that you can give Somebody that's in the yellow light of life is they're gonna be working for you and so you might. Okay, they're pretty good. There's some good days, some bad days, but there's still something that just could be missing at times, and that green light of leader life of life leader is going to work with you, so they're going to come to you with ideas. They're not just going to be dumping like Jen or Lindsay this happened again or this is going on, like they're like hey, I saw this and here's a couple solutions that I have that I think would make our company better. And so that's really what we want to focus on is when you have those green light leaders, those are the ones that really are able to make that ripple effect.

Speaker 1:

Totally. And you know I think I've heard you know in other organizations before that you know people try to force people into different categories, but people are who they are, you know. So you can't, you know, approach necessarily a red light leader and say, you know, hey, come to me with some solutions instead of problems, because they might. But at the end of the day, you know, they, if, if they truly do view the world as they're working against you. You know, it doesn't matter what amount of coaching you give them doesn't make them a bad person. It just means like, hey, we're not the right fit for each other, and so we just want to be clear about that too.

Speaker 1:

Like you know, because we've also been in that space, I know I've been in that space before where you're like, hey, I can pour more energy and more time and more effort into this individual to get them to a green light. But at the end of the day, it's hard enough to change yourself, and if you've ever tried to change anyone else, they're usually an ex somebody else, and you know. So, really, the gift here is to just view people as they are, not as a form of judgment, but just as a hey, what are we trying to create there and who can help us create this so that we can create as big of a ripple effect as we would like to you know, so that'll help you get really clear on who are those green light people. You know how can we spot them so that we can have more of them on our leadership team to make this the best place possible.

Speaker 2:

Awesome. And so what we know is that you know, there's a lot of masks that people wear, and usually there's a mask that, naturally, people wear the most. We're not talking about Halloween mask. We're talking about like, of Leadership, and so when you think about, like, what are the different faces that some leaders wear, it helps you to understand, hey, what light of life could this person be in, and are they really the exact, you know, person that I'm looking for to be part of our leadership team?

Speaker 2:

So we'll kick it off first with one of our favorites. It's called Sally Superb and, ps, you're going to have one of these masks as well. So it's fun just to know where you are, so that it just really creates awareness. At the end of the day, and when you have that gift of awareness that you know, like, hey, I can make a new opportunity to this if this is not serving me in this moment. So we have Sally Superb. So this is me, sally Superb, over here, and Sally Superb is everything has to be perfect. You can do no wrong and you're always proving yourself. So if you're thinking about, like hey, who on my team is a Sally Superb, there's no judgment against them. It's just giving you the tools and the access to know. Hey, maybe this is their star power, this is how they could serve our company or our leaders best in the company.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and that's definitely a mask that I can relate to. You know, it's like if you have ever been a perfectionist in your life or something like that, I think that you know that's definitely that Sally superb. And you know, like Jen said this, it can be used as a superpower and so. But sometimes, like when we are in the basement of our life versus the balcony of our lives, you know, it shows up really differently. And so you know, when Sally Superb is in the balcony of her life, you know she's checking on some details and making sure everything's going smoothly. But when she's more in that basement of her life, you know she's super masking things and you know it can become a not so great place to be.

Speaker 1:

And so that next one that we want to talk about is called no See, Nancy. And so this person is somebody who hides behind everyone. They don't want to stand out, they're almost invisible and they're just flowing through life, you know. And so you know when, when this person is like in the basement of their life, they're truly invisible. You know I can think about different people on my team over the years and you know a lot of times they're just quiet, agreeable, wonderful people. You know those are. You know some of the balcony qualities of that one, but the basement is like. You wanna make sure that they're seen, you know, because everybody on your team matters, you know, even if they're not one to share their opinion a lot on different things. You wanna make sure that they're staying connected so that they have that bigger purpose that they're working towards in their life.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and if your name is Sally or Nancy, hey, there's no judgment here. This is just for awareness. It doesn't mean that all the Nancys are this way. It's just to really give you a tool to really help you understand people at a new level and to build that leadership team. So no judgment against the names here, just a fun way to look at it. And so our next mask is gonna be Mother Mary, and so our next mask is going to be mother Mary.

Speaker 2:

And so you know you probably know these people, or maybe you are one, and that's okay too is they tend to mother everyone. So you know they always have an answer. They tend to argue to the end. You know they're just think about that. And sometimes the motherly figure is not always in a positive way. It's like, hey, you know, oh, the reason you got here is because I helped you or I did this for you, and so that can be definitely in their basement of personalities. Um is to really view mother Mary's and I would say sometimes it's hard for mother Mary's to be extraordinary leaders just because they're, they're always right and they always have that answer not always, but just the opportunity to view. So if you have a Mother Mary on your team or recognize that in them. Just be aware of it Doesn't mean you have to release them today, but just that gift of awareness will let you know who they are.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, just you know, because mostly that can be like a stifling thing, like because really you know when, when you're in the basement of that Mother Mary, you know it's like you know better than anyone and so that can really, you know, kind of suppress people around them. You know it's like they have to be the ones to pick everything, they have to be the ones to make the final decisions. They're the reason why someone got a promotion, they're the reason why you know whatever. And so if you recognize this in yourself, you know working towards getting to those balcony qualities, to where you can celebrate that they were the ones who created that success, you know like you can still love on people. You know, I think that can be a good quality when it's utilized in the correct ways, because sometimes, when you're really deep in that Mother Mary mask, you love on people, but it's for your own good, it's not for their good. And so when you can get into that, that balcony of mother Mary, you're loving on people for their own good and you get nothing out of it. You're not having to be right. And so after that mother Mary, then the next one is little girl Lucy, and so this one, um is, is a great one to recognize as well.

Speaker 1:

This one is one that likes to put responsibility on everyone else, so it's like almost like you're a little girl forever, so like you didn't know that something was happening or you didn't know you're supposed to do that. Like literally nothing is your responsibility, nothing is your responsibility. And you know, as a leader, what can stand out here as a basement quality for them is just that they don't want to step up and they don't want to take responsibility. And you know they can even act like you know they didn't know stuff was happening or you know they'll blame others for things. But you know when you can take off this mask and ultimately, like you know, when you're connected to your highest self, like you're disconnected from these masks or these game faces or however you want to look at them, so you're ultimately disconnected from them. When you're your true self, you might, you're truly in all of those those balcony qualities, and you'll see several masks that you're wearing, but most people predominantly have one, and so we're truly talking more about kind of those basement qualities. And so, little girl Lucy, she just avoids any responsibility and she just is just meek and she can't do anything on her own and you know.

Speaker 1:

And so really helping to empower an individual like this to you know, start to take on some additional responsibility and to see you know that. That you know. I think a beautiful quote is you know, like who's coming to save you? Like the day that you realize that, like no one is coming to save you is a beautiful day, and not using that in an abusive way towards little girl Lucy, but just really helping them say like, hey, you're the savior. Like you're the one who's going to create your destiny. You know we can help lead the path to get there, but ultimately it comes down to you doing it. So let's figure out what we need to do and how much more responsibility that we can take on to really start driving that ship in the direction we want to go.

Speaker 2:

Awesome. And then our next mask is angry Amy. So if you're angry Amy, you ain't taking no jump.

Speaker 1:

Not today.

Speaker 2:

You will like argue to the end Like you are got to prove yourself. You've always got to be right and you're also could be the victim of hey, nothing ever goes my way. So you know, you can kind of feel this energy from someone is like um, they're just, they're there to fight to the end. They're, they're always probably going to be right and you know they're just not going to take whatever you say. They're like yeah, I'm not putting them up with that today. You're late, you're done, sorry, one warning you're out.

Speaker 1:

I love it. It's like they could be like a drill sergeant or something. Oh, that's great. The next one is confused, kathy. So this is the individual who's, just like always, confused. You don't even know what you are. You don't know where you stand on any issues no-transcript mask I wear.

Speaker 2:

I said, well, if you're not sure which one you are, you're probably confused. So we're going to put you in confused Kathy. And so our last mask is drill sergeant Darlene. And so you know, these people, if you think of like a drill sergeant, like their stare alone can be like, oh, that's scary. And so they look and act. You know mad most of the time, and you maybe feel just a little fearful when you're around them. And so you know, when you have a drill sergeant Darlene, it's like this is the way we do it, this is how it goes and this is the way it needs to be done.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and so really, we hope you can utilize this tool.

Speaker 1:

Feel free to email us, hello at thephdprogramcom, We'll send it over to you.

Speaker 1:

Check our social media. We'll be uploading that on there soon, but this is just a great introduction to what it can look like with different masks inside of leadership and when you're able to, you know, utilize this tool to teach your team to say like, hey, you know, let's recognize where the mask is that we wear most. It can really help people to start to softly remove it, you know, and it can also help them understand the individuals that they're working with and the masks that they wear. And a lot of times when we have that mask on super tight, it's because we've got a little chaos or something going on in our life and, you know, that can give you the opportunity to help somebody clear a little bit of chaos or just know, hey, if they're always living in this, if they're super gripped tight to that mask, you know again, doesn't make them a bad person. It just might not be the best fit for the leadership team or might not be the best fit for the company.

Speaker 2:

Awesome. Well, thanks for tuning in. We'll catch you next week. Have a great day.
