The Beer Brothers

Gather 'round, sports enthusiasts and cinephiles, as we huddle up with Mark, Chris, and Greg for a hearty blend of sports talk and silver screen nostalgia. Sinking our teeth into Kentucky's latest basketball triumph, we stir up a lively debate about the coaching fiasco between John Calipari and Bruce Pearl. But the hoops hysteria doesn't stop there; we're tossing around our thoughts on Chris Holtmann's departure from Ohio State, and whether Thad Matta might just bounce back onto the court. We don't just stick to the script; there's even a dash of Lima trivia and reminiscing about the good ol' days with Greg Oden and Mike Conley, all served with the laid-back vibe of friends catching up over drinks.

Now, dim the lights and grab your popcorn as we put our movie quote memory to the test, with lines that'll have you racing through film favorites from "Smokey and the Bandit" to "The Godfather." We're not just about the laughs though; we share a slice of our hearts with personal tales tied to the Daytona 500 and a nod to the legend of Dale Earnhardt Sr. Switching from the roar of engines to the whisper of celluloid dreams, join us as we traverse the winding roads of casual chatter, shared memories, and those unexpected 'aha!' moments that pop up when the conversation is as free-flowing as the beverages.

Speaker 1:

3 Guys Around the Table.

Speaker 2:

Well, there's 3 of us and there's a table.

Speaker 3:

You've heard of 5 guys. We're not talking burgers and fries here, we're talking 3 guys a table and the topics of the day that we want to talk about. It could be anything from this to that, or we could talk to this person to that, but guess what? You'll never know what it is until you listen in.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to 3 Guys Around the Table I'm Mark, I'm Chris, I'm Greg. Since we didn't introduce ourselves the last time, we figured we'd better start off right off the bat with that, and tonight it is truly going to be things we just want to talk about. No said agenda. We're just going to kind of shoot the breeze a little bit, so we should. What are the topics of the day? What are some things you want to talk about?

Speaker 3:

Well, Kentucky beat Auburn pretty good down there at Auburn.

Speaker 1:

So that's a pretty good thing. It was a good win. It was a good week. They played defense.

Speaker 3:

They played defense. It was a great thing, to see it was good about time they put on the gas the whole time.

Speaker 2:

You know they came out of the gate.

Speaker 3:

They were leading all the way through the game and really just. But did you notice? And listen to Bruce Pearl? It sounds like he's jockeying for the UK job, no question, I mean he's trying so hard to get his name and consideration there for a job that's not open. Well, I like the guy, but I don't think Barnhart would ever hire him.

Speaker 1:

Well, I would have never thought he would have hired John Gallipari either.

Speaker 3:

Well, there was a bunch of boosters behind that deal.

Speaker 2:

You know, after what Gallipari said, after the game.

Speaker 3:

I like that. I like that.

Speaker 2:

I mean, that was, that was pretty intense, right.

Speaker 3:

You guys came here for another reason. You came here for some other reason. You came to see something different. Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so seriously with Cal is to see keep his job for as long as he wants. That's his way, that's his way.

Speaker 1:

That's his way. That's his way With the buyout that he's got Right. Yeah, we're not going to pay you 75 million for not coaching, right, yeah, this is not the Ken Griffey situation.

Speaker 2:

I'm sorry, it doesn't work that way yeah.

Speaker 3:

He's coaches as long as he wants to coach. Yeah, I think so yeah, hands down. But you guys, ohio State lost a coach this week. Yeah, yeah, we did Chris Hulton.

Speaker 2:

It was time. You know, chris did a good job, I think for several years there and I think his message got a little stale. I think he did a really good job in turning the culture around on the team, but as far as X's and O's, I just I don't think he's. You know what's your record right now? 15 and 11.

Speaker 3:

I think about that. You guys fired somebody with a winning record in University of Luzerville down the street, yeah, as a coach. It's eight and 18.

Speaker 2:

Well, with, with the, with the interim coach, jake D Blur. He, you know, took over and they're going to push the ball a little bit. They're going to get a lot more. In the transition game they played Purdue and took it to Purdue and, you know, knock them off, the number two team in the country. Good win. I don't think Jake D Blur is applying for the, for the job, full time.

Speaker 1:

I don't think he's coaching for the job, but he's. He's an Ohio boy from.

Speaker 2:

Lima yeah, he's, you know this.

Speaker 3:

This is since we're just talking today. I mean we're simply sitting around the table talking.

Speaker 2:

Well, I think we can talk about a fun fact, okay, and that fun fact is the city of Lima shares its name with a being.

Speaker 3:

That's true, that's true.

Speaker 2:

It's another city named Lima, in which country Peru. Fun fact, chris is smart Bingo, so anyway, that's the I believe they call it Lima. Yeah, so I'm glad that we got to talk about Lima there.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, just the city in.

Speaker 2:

Peru. Right, I think that's I've got the fun fact. Yeah, OK good.

Speaker 3:

Ohio State's firetex coach Chris Holtman is from what city in Kentucky, Lima.

Speaker 2:

I'm going to guess, hmm.

Speaker 1:

Elizabeth 10.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm going to go with Radcliffe.

Speaker 3:

Does he live next to the pawn shop, one of the Thoroughbred lounge Three? No, he's from Nicholasville, nicholas Vegas.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So no, you know I had. It's going to be interesting to see who Ohio State goes after for their next basketball coach. But really, thad Mada, part two. Thad could be coming back. I'm on the. I'm on the Thad Mada.

Speaker 3:

Why don't we just hire Greg Odin? Where did he ever disappear to, didn't he? He's in like some museum.

Speaker 1:

Now the missing.

Speaker 2:

Greg Odin. Greg Odin was the man.

Speaker 1:

Look that team look, he was the man at the Justin Bieber concert.

Speaker 2:

If he is the missing link you know, I mean he played most of that, that one season, most of the season with his right wrist broken and he had to shoot free throws left handed. And he still got him to the national championship game, and Mike Conley was on that team too. So that was a pretty decent little team.

Speaker 3:

You know what's funny is I don't remember the name Mike Conley. And where's he playing the NBA Does he used to play for Memphis.

Speaker 2:

I'm not sure if he still does or not, but yeah, he's had a great NBA career.

Speaker 3:

He related to John Conley.

Speaker 2:

I think that they sang a little rose covered glasses. These rose colored glasses.

Speaker 1:

Did we talk about the Super Bowl last week, or I can't remember.

Speaker 3:

Super Bowl? I don't believe so.

Speaker 2:

No, what's the Super Bowl Did we? I don't know. Yeah, we did, yeah, we did we talked a little bit about how terrible the commercials.

Speaker 1:

Travis Kelsie, Taylor House and Taylor Swift and Travis Kelsie, or they're going to get married.

Speaker 2:

Absolutely. I can't believe he didn't propose. He's on the field.

Speaker 3:

Absolutely. I just can't wait until they break up and she writes a song about him. That's not going to happen.

Speaker 2:

No, they're there and it for the long call.

Speaker 3:

They are meant to be. One thing I do have to tell you. Yeah, you know, Jason Kelsie's wife did she did you see what she wore to the game.

Speaker 2:

Yes, she wore a red outfit, but no, kate Kansas City. Why was it red? Because Taylor Swift's album.

Speaker 3:

No, it was Cincinnati Bearcats is what it was. Yeah, because she refused to wear the chiefs, because her husband you know, and she's a Bengals fan because she's Cincinnati girl Boom.

Speaker 2:

I like that and close.

Speaker 1:

South Alima.

Speaker 3:

That's a good name of a band. It's a sort of band.

Speaker 2:

This podcast very easily could be South of Lima.

Speaker 3:

I mean, I don't know.

Speaker 2:

Percent. I don't know why we keep.

Speaker 3:

I say we get around with. Let's get rid of the table and call ourselves South of Lima.

Speaker 1:

South of Lima. So have you guys seen these, the new fighting series that's on TV and on the internet?

Speaker 3:

that's big, big, little brawlers no that's slapping. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I've seen that they have to watch the video.

Speaker 1:

They've been rousing their hands before they do it. Yeah, so and you got to tell them when the slaps coming. I mean they'll knock you out slapping you. I think we should show Markelle at work.

Speaker 2:

They do this on purpose 100 percent, and they'll knock you out.

Speaker 1:

I mean, so it's got caught on Facebook and I was like wow, and then you can't stop watching it, basically. But yeah, so you stand at this, like up, like this table, yeah, and you've got to be touching it. And the guy who's up against your or lady, they do it, they they rousing their hand up and they go like this and they tell you what number they're coming in. You can't flinch, because if you flinch, that's points taken away from it, but they will light you up.

Speaker 3:

I think if you go to the Lawrenceburg Dollar General, you'll see the same thing on a Saturday morning. Quite frankly, the same thing.

Speaker 2:

I'm. I don't think I'm going to be watching that. I think that's going to ease into my or take away from my Perry Mason time a little bit.

Speaker 3:

Here you go. It is crazy, why would people?

Speaker 2:

watching video of this and it just doesn't look great to me. Just watch. Yeah, oh my.

Speaker 1:

God and the women do it too. Yeah, crazy. So you guys start watching. Some slap that. I really you guys come out on that, if you look at it, look at it, look, oh, no, no, no, what's your face getting just?

Speaker 2:

not great. Oh look, if I want to watch violence, I'm going to go Pro wrestling OVW wrestling baby.

Speaker 1:

Oh, for those of you, we are going to be making our appearance at OVW wrestling.

Speaker 2:

We'll be signing autographs before and after three guys around the table south of Lima at.

Speaker 1:

OVW at the March 16th March 16th.

Speaker 3:

Yes, we will be there. I only hope the veteran Jack Vaughn will be wrestling.

Speaker 2:

We are going to be getting. At least one of those guys has got to come on the podcast, absolutely.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, oh, I think we can get cash flow. Yeah, he would be the one cash flow, did you?

Speaker 1:

see him at state capital this week.

Speaker 3:

We're in a sport coat.

Speaker 1:

No, so OVW Davis declared this week Nice. And the legislature who, a legislator, who put it in and got it approved got chopped by cash flow.

Speaker 3:

Now, if you guys don't know, ovw is Ohio Valley wrestling, which is the only independent regional wrestling organization still in existence. Back in the day, there were these Memphis wrestling Ohio Valley. They were everywhere and they all came together.

Speaker 2:

Okay, oh yeah. Mid Atlantic, they all got bought up by the big boys that the WCW. The territory is as they Right.

Speaker 3:

Yes, the AEW WCW and the WWE that are WWE F back then. The bottom all up OVW is still the only independent wrestling out there.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so it's, it's entertaining.

Speaker 1:

It is definitely. There is a bowl.

Speaker 2:

There was one in Southern Ohio, by the way, called the SWF, the superstars wrestling Federation.

Speaker 3:

What was the show that used to become the used to come on called the superstars of wrestling. Who was that associated that?

Speaker 2:

was W, w F.

Speaker 3:

Okay, superstars of wrestling.

Speaker 2:

There we go. All right, I sent you, boys, a video today earlier of a an early, early pre Vince McMahon Jr W W F. Wwe tag team a six man tag.

Speaker 3:

Yeah.

Speaker 2:

Remember earlier, when we did the show on the best of, where we talked about tag teams, I brought up the wild Samoans.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you guys look at me like I was like you know from outer space, the wild Samoans versus.

Speaker 2:

Ivan Puttsky the American dream, dusty Rhodes wait rolling in at 260. Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute. Three bills Andre the giant Wait a minute.

Speaker 3:

I think we have a special guest here. Oh, do we? Ladies and gentlemen, wait a minute. He just walked in. Dusty Rhodes has joined us here at the table.

Speaker 2:

Let me tell you something right now. Listen, rick and flare. Rick and flare, I want to say that to be mentioned on this podcast by these guys. You know what I'm saying. You understand where I'm coming from. I am the son of a plumber. I am the American dream. Dusty Rhodes, the second most powerful man in professional wrestling history. I'm not holding the backseat to anyone except Andre the giant. That's it, baby, that's it. Better than Hulk, better than the macho man, and we can fly you, not even in the top 10.

Speaker 1:

Ladies and gentlemen, dusty Rhodes, it's at the reason why his shorts hang down so low is because he's the son of a plumber.

Speaker 3:

That's great. That is great for.

Speaker 2:

Dusty to come in here.

Speaker 3:

It's unbelievable.

Speaker 2:

It's impressive, I'm, I'm, I mean, you know, because he's been gone for.

Speaker 3:

Years now, but see, that just shows you the our podcast can the power, can bring people back from the dead. Oh, and one last thing he's still here.

Speaker 2:

I gotta say something. Cody Rhodes, my son Cody Rhodes, he deserves his shot at WrestleMania.

Speaker 3:

And yet again, we resurrected. Rock deserved a shot.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, Well, I think you know we must have had some kind of a seance thing.

Speaker 3:

Anyhow, so have you guys been watching this? I've got hooked into this show called big little brawlers. It's about the micro wrestling. I have no well. First of all, we got to go Number two. They travel around and they're coming to Shelbyville and some other places. They call it Micro one and micro two. Micro ones the travelers micro our good friend John Stout.

Speaker 1:

He went to it when it was in Shelbyville last year and loved sales.

Speaker 3:

Fantastic, I'm buying into these characters, that the show is very well done. I think it's on a and a, maybe something that could be very well done, but the characters, they've developed them so well and, and you know it's just, it's very entertaining. You guys need to watch that.

Speaker 2:

So one thing I wanted to bring up tonight is wanted to have a little, and I don't really have a good sound effect for this.

Speaker 3:

So you know that's a pretty good, that's pretty good, like, what are we looking for?

Speaker 1:

Is it something exciting, something that that, that that note says exciting?

Speaker 2:

I think it's at least interesting. I don't know about exciting Woo. Is it going to?

Speaker 1:

be pretty good.

Speaker 2:

Mm, hmm, it is a movie quote quiz. Are you ready? Oh boy, all right, here we go. You ready? All right, first quote you have to give me the movie. I'll start off, easy, all right, and then we'll, and then we'll. You know, kind of progress a little bit, because he's thirsty, dummy Smoking the bandit. That's true, that was, that was no one's an easy one. That was an easy one.

Speaker 1:

Now it's going to get a very quotable movie.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, no doubt he must have had a lot of friends.

Speaker 2:

All right. Quote number two I have many leather bound books and my apartment smells of mahogany. Anchorman Chris is two for two. I've never watched it.

Speaker 1:

Are you serious?

Speaker 3:

Baxter, you know I don't speak Spanish.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I've never watched it, so that's oh I, as soon as we finish this podcast we're going to be watching. I mean, you know that that really is a classic. That really is a classic. Now, now this one's for Greg, because Chris is two for two. All right, I'm going to make this one really, really challenging.

Speaker 1:

OK.

Speaker 2:

All right, I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse.

Speaker 1:

God for the boom.

Speaker 2:

See, I gave you easy ones.

Speaker 1:

That's for easy.

Speaker 2:

So I honestly think we could do a whole.

Speaker 1:

What about this one? Yeah, sixty two books.

Speaker 2:

I have no idea. I got nothing. Sixty two books, mm, hmm, hmm, I have no idea.

Speaker 1:

Let me get another one from it All right, like they got here, no. It's got Jack Nicholson in it. Sixty two books.

Speaker 3:

I'm always talking about with Jack.

Speaker 2:

The one where he's very OCD Yep I don't know, that's good.

Speaker 3:

Oh yeah, that's good yeah.

Speaker 2:

So you remember he did?

Speaker 1:

He finished a book and he goes. He goes 62 books and then he goes. I hate the doggy.

Speaker 3:

I hate the doggy that was a good movie.

Speaker 1:

It was good until they started the trip to Baltimore.

Speaker 3:

And it went downhill dramatically. Look, every good movie has at least one bad.

Speaker 1:

OK, wait, the most memorable line in that, when he was yelling for the cops and he goes. You don't know much more on, tell me.

Speaker 3:

But there's some good lines, you know speaking of Nicholson, have you guys seen the movie the Bucket List?

Speaker 2:

You know, honestly, I have not seen that movie.

Speaker 3:

It is such a great movie, morgan.

Speaker 2:

Freeman, Jack Nicholson. Then he get in like a hot tub with hot machine and that, or is that a different movie?

Speaker 3:

That's definitely a different movie. Ok, these guys are both. They meet each other, the both have cancer and they decide we've got things we want to do before we die. And it's such a great movie. I mean it's just really really good movie. It's funny.

Speaker 2:

It's inspiring. It's sad.

Speaker 3:

What movie am I thinking of? I think you're thinking of the one with if Kathy Bates and and oh, what's his name? I can't remember Quarterback from Steelers.

Speaker 2:

Terry Bradshaw. They were in a movie together. I don't think that was it. I do not recall sir.

Speaker 1:

Who won the Daytona 500 today? Oh wait a minute. Weather delay till tomorrow.

Speaker 3:

Oh, really, yeah, Today is the anniversary death of Dale Earnhardt, senior, by the way.

Speaker 1:

Do you know where you were when that happened? Was it a big enough event that you remembered where you were?

Speaker 3:

Negative ghostwriter. I remember where I was.

Speaker 2:

I think I remember where I was, but you never been in Nascar guy.

Speaker 3:

I've been to Daladega Charlotte.

Speaker 2:

My dad went to the Daytona 500 every year. That you know of his adult life, I think, and I just didn't get that gene from him. He was a drag racer, much like our good friend Greg here.

Speaker 3:

But yeah, I never really got into that.

Speaker 2:

Nope, neither we had all those. You know, my dad had those dragsters. We had all those stickers laying around the house all the time you know STP you know and I remember seeing those stickers everywhere.

Speaker 3:

I had those stickers too. They were a publisher's clearinghouse. They had about a million and they were just magazines. You could lick them and stick them everywhere you wanted to.

Speaker 1:

Hmm.

Speaker 2:

Well, that was fun boys.

Speaker 3:

Not done, are we? I mean, we still have more things to talk about.

Speaker 2:

Well, are we done? I don't think we're done, oh hey this week.

Speaker 3:

Yes, we got to get together to do another one this week, but uh, yeah, Real quick, be thinking about those. Some of the topics out there you want to talk about. Mark, I like the idea about hobbies kind of things we guys get into when we're not here, when we're not hanging out, when we're not working or vacationing, or whatever we do, but some of us don't take 15 vacations a year, so I don't take any vacations.

Speaker 2:

Oh my Lord, here we go, right, mark. Mark works all the time.

Speaker 3:

I mean he is always on the clock.

Speaker 2:

I am. I'm on the clock now.

Speaker 3:

You are on the clock, hey. You know what highest paid individual in the county of Frank.

Speaker 2:

No, I'm not even close. I'm not even close.

Speaker 1:

Look, uh I has paid public school official in Frankwood County.

Speaker 2:

No, that's fair. I'd say that that's reasonable, right yeah, um awkward, very awkward, that's awkward and with that boys, I think we call it. I think I want to talk politics. Oh wait, wait, wait, wait, I know what I can talk about. Let's talk about the Lima story. Want to take it just a few minutes? Let's stay with the story.

Speaker 3:

I mean, here's the thing we talked about the lima before. We should go ahead and just tell them. So remember it started. Remember it started at that time when we were we were headed up in Ohio. Remember, and we started just.
