Hey everyone, welcome back to another episode of the SEO Knowledge Bomb podcast! In today's episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Bret Moleta, founder of Mindsaw and Google Maps expert.

Bret has been in the SEO game since the late 90s, first starting out by going door-to-door to small businesses and designing their websites. He eventually opened up his own agency and grew it to over 15 employees before transitioning his business fully online in 2011.

Since then, Bret has specialized in local SEO and ranking businesses on Google Maps. His YouTube channel now has over 6,000 subscribers where he teaches real online marketing techniques.

There were so many great insights from my chat with Bret, but let me break down some of the key takeaways for you:

  1. Reviews are crucial for ranking in Google Maps. Bret explained that when searching for a local business, most people will call the one with the most 5-star reviews. So focus on getting a high volume of positive reviews from customers in your geographic area. Mention your city plus landmarks to help optimize them.
  2. Register your Google My Business profile properly. This is the foundation of your Maps presence. Make sure to verify your address and completely fill out your profile.
  3. Build local citations before creating your GMB listing. By first creating citations on directories like Yelp and Manta, you establish more of an online footprint. This will help avoid getting your new GMB suspended.
  4. Match your website with your GMB profile. Your business name, address, phone number, and categories need to be consistent across both. Create optimized landing pages for each of your service categories.
  5. Use software like Local Falcon to analyze your rankings. See where you currently rank for keywords on a grid model around your location. Then improve weak areas by optimizing for those terms.
  6. Leverage your Google My Business categories. Associate your profile with all relevant categories so you show up for searches related to them. Add these categories directly on your website too.
  7. Create location pages for the areas you serve. If you want to rank in a city outside your own, create an optimized “areas we serve” page for that location.
  8. Provide value upfront to build an audience. Give away your best tips and tactics through blogs, videos, and podcasts. Becoming a thought leader is the best way to organically gain clients.

Those were just some of the highlights from my insightful interview with Bret Moleta. Let me know in the comments what your biggest takeaway was! If you want to learn more, head over to Bret's YouTube channel and be sure to give him a follow.

Alright everyone, that wraps up this episode of the SEO Knowledge Bomb podcast. Thank you so much for listening! Until next time, keep working on mastering your SEO knowledge. This is Dre signing off.
