Hey everyone, it's Andre here with another SEO Knowledge Bomb! On today's episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with renowned SEO expert Kasra Dash.
Kasra shared so many gems about recovering websites hit by Google updates, disavowing toxic links, and strategies to rank higher. I wanted to highlight the key tactics you can implement right away to level up your SEO game.
So let's dive right in!
Do A Proactive Disavow
The first takeaway Kasra emphasized was the importance of being proactive with your link disavows. As he put it, you don't want to wait until you run out of gas on the highway to start looking for a gas station.
His recommendation is to do a disavow every 12-18 months. Even if you haven't been hit by an update, it's smart to prune your backlink profile routinely.
This prevents issues from creeping up over time. Google may let things slide for awhile, but then crack down in a core update. So stay ahead of the curve.
When disavowing, use multiple link analysis tools - Ahrefs, Majestic, Moz, etc. Each tool only covers a portion of your backlinks.
You need the full picture from all of them combined to properly identify toxic links. Otherwise you may inadvertently nuke good links while keeping bad ones.
The goal is to find the goldilocks balance - the right cadence of disavows and comprehensive data to inform your decisions. That will minimize risk and keep your site from being collateral damage.
Match Competitors' Toxicity Levels
The second strategy Kasra recommended was matching your competitors' toxicity levels.
Every niche has a different tolerance for sketchy links before sites get slapped by Google. For lawyers in New York City, the threshold might be 1,200 toxicity units. For plumbers in Wyoming, it could be 300 units.
You need to research the competition and gauge what that acceptable range is. The best tool for this assessment is Link Research Tools, which provides the most accurate toxicity data.
Once you know the target, build links up to that toxicity level using sites with inherent trust and power. Avoid spammy links. The goal is links that naturally carry some "dirt", but still lend authority.
This helps you fly under the radar. You're not completely clean, but also not crossing the line. Rinse and repeat this process, scaling carefully over time.
Focus On Expertise, Authority and Trust
The last takeaway was around establishing E-A-T (expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness). This has become a core ranking factor for Google.
Start by building out a knowledge panel, so your expertise shows up in search results. Next, pursue off-page E-A-T by getting reputable sites to mention you as an authority.
Populate your niche keywords across these brands to demonstrate your expertise. And check that your on-page content showcases unique analysis - not just summarizing what's already out there.
The goal is to telegraph authority and knowledge even before users click your site. Google needs to trust that you're a real expert providing value.
Do all of this properly, and you'll be rewarded with higher rankings. Let this lapse, and the opposite can happen.
So in summary:
- Do proactive disavows routinely to prune toxic links
- Match competitors' toxicity levels using inherently powerful sites
- Build expertise and authority with knowledge panels and off-page mentions
I hope these tips from my conversation with Kasra help take your SEO to the next level! Let me know if you have any other questions.
Until next time, this has been Andre with your SEO Knowledge Bomb. Now go out there and own those rankings!
