42 - Dr Sophie Brock - Motherhood Sociologist

Season 1 Episode 42

Sophie is a sociologist who has a specialised focus in Motherhood Studies, holding a PhD from The University of Sydney. One of the main results from Sophie’s research was a conceptual theory about the way motherhood is socially constructed and individually experienced. The theory has been described as ‘ground-breaking’ and life-changing’ and is the basis of everything she teaches.

Sophie works independently, teaching maternal scholarship and theory to mothers, and practitioners who support mothers. Through her writing, podcast, mentoring and courses, Sophie provides analysis of Motherhood in our culture, exploring the ways individual experiences of Mothers are shaped by broader social constructs. She supports professionals, business owners and creatives with an aim to shift what Motherhood means in our society, and how individual Mothers are supported.

On this episode you can expect to learn about Sophie’s groundbreaking ‘fish tank of motherhood’ model, how both parents can work together to support the family unit, what prevents parents from taking parental leave from work, how we can shift motherhood narratives in society, why being the perfect mother is a myth and how to avoid it, plus skills and strategies for managing the inevitable moments when you let your kids down.
