Ready to take charge of your home water supply? You're at the right place! We explore the world of home water filtration systems and their worth. We not only expose the hidden danger of city municipalities adding chloramine, a cocktail of chlorine and ammonia, to your water but also emphasize the importance of removing these substances from your home's water supply. We present these facts wrapped in our motto: 'either buy a filter or be a filter'. We also discuss the risks of absorbing chemicals through your skin while showering or even breathing in chlorine gas.

In the second part of our dialogue, we distinguish between a water softener and a water purification system. We highlight the repercussions of using a salt system on city water, which could lead to premature failure of water heaters or cause damage to your plumbing fixtures. We delve into the effects of shower water on your health, underlining the importance of removing carcinogens from your home water supply. Lastly, we provide an overview of the efficacy of different filters, stressing that not all are created equal. It's all about empowering you to take control of your home's water purity. Don't miss out on this enlightening discussion!

Speaker 1:

Welcome to Benjamin Franklin Plumbing Podcast, where, if there's any delay, it's you we pay. Here's your host and owner of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Port St Lucie, matt Black.

Speaker 2:

Welcome back everyone. Garfield Bowen, co-host, producer of the show, back in the studio with Matt Black Matt, how you doing.

Speaker 3:

It's a great day. Staying busy today.

Speaker 2:

Listen, I got some questions for you. This one in particular I got to ask you because I don't know the answer. Our whole home water filtration system worth it?

Speaker 3:

Well, they are worth it, and different ones can take out different items in the water. So in the area that we're at, mainly in Port St Lucie and the surrounding areas, the city municipalities for city water put in what's called chloramine into the water and that's chlorine and ammonia mixed. So unfortunately they have to do that to kill the bacteria in the pipe from where it goes to the plant to your home, and it becomes your responsibility to remove the chlorine and ammonia out of the water once it gets to your home. So one of the things that we discuss is either buy a filter or be a filter, because if you're not filtering out with a whole house water filtration system, then you are now that filter and not only do you take in these chemicals from drinking.

Speaker 3:

So people will say, well, I don't drink the water, I drink bottled water or I have an under the sink filter, which is great, but you also absorb all of these chemicals through your skin when you're taking a shower and the chlorine gas is your breathing in when you're taking a shower. So they're definitely recommended. You also have a whole house systems that can help protect your home. So removing the chlorine protects you, but then you have systems that can remove or change the structure of the hardness. So it's not gumming up your fixtures and sticking to your shower doors and sticking to your plumbing fixtures. So there's definitely a different type of products that are available for everybody's different needs.

Speaker 2:

So those are the like water softeners, huh.

Speaker 3:

Well, a softener is different than a water purification system. A softener, most of the time you see, on well water and they do what's called ion exchange. So they will take the salt and they will change it for the hardness. So they'll take out the calcium and magnesium and replace it with salt. When you're on a well system, sometimes you don't have any other choice but to do that. But if you're on city water we don't recommend using a salt system on city water. You're putting salt into your plumbing system. Your plumbing system has brass, has steel, has different types of metals in there, and salt just doesn't work well with those items. So we see water heaters premature felling or felling prematurely because of that. And then you have challenges with shower valves, certain things like that that you know starts pitting the brass. So we recommend a purification system instead of a salt system in those cases.

Speaker 2:

Okay and it sounds like I mean you know, I'm sure everyone is into the spring water now, you know. But you're saying the shower, the shower water, it makes a big difference in the shower water. That's getting the chemicals. You know, we all, I guess, super conscious, you know, people getting cancer and all kinds of stuff as we get older. We want to really be as pure as possible, you know. So you're saying it's a good thing.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, back in the Obama administration the World Health Organization put out the president's panel, put out a study and they were saying that you know that the chlorine and the ammonia that's in the water is cancer causing carcinogens and that it needs to be removed and it is a homeowner's responsibility to remove these. So at the very least you want to do that. There is basic carbon filters. That carbon will remove the chlorine and it will remove a little bit of the ammonia. But you just need contact time. So not all filters are created equal. So the chloramine, when you're trying to remove both of those, they need a little extra contact time. They can't run through the filter so quick. So you need to have a, you know, a certain type of filter that will handle the ammonia along with the chlorine.

Speaker 2:

Love it Good stuff. You have a wonderful rest of the day. We'll see you in the next episode, Matt.

Speaker 3:

All right, sounds great. You have a good day.
