4. Understanding and Embracing Diversity with Rachel Stock

Martin Coburn

Rachel’s passion for autism and other neurodiverse conditions started when her lovely son Harry was diagnosed with autism aged 4.

From that day forward, Rachel made it her mission to find out everything she possibly could about neurodiversity and how to help Harry play to his unique strengths and enjoy life to the fullest.

Through her journey and education, Rachel has gained a whole host of very specialist qualifications and skills.  Eager to help others in a similar position, Rachel set up ASD Parent Coach (https://www.asdparentcoach.co.uk) and provides coaching and support to other parents of neurodiverse children so that they can navigate the sometimes challenging, and often rewarding journey of discovery that accompanies a diagnosis.

In this episode we explore every corner of neurodiversity and what we can all to do better understand and support diversity in families, friendships, and in the workplace.

We thank Rachel for her abundance in this very revealing and thought-provoking episode and look forward to continuing to support her as she develops this hugely important body of work.

In this episode we discuss topics such as:

  • What neurodiversity means and how it is expressed in children and adults?
  • How Rachel found her own purpose in ASD parent coach - the motivation and inspiration behind her work
  • How parents and family members can support their neurodiverse relatives to find their own passions, purpose, and path through life
  • Neurodiversity in the workplace and what we can all do to better understand and embrace diversity and inclusion in the workforce.

“The human race is neurodiverse.  It doesn’t mean we can’t learn we just need to be taught.”

“Neurodiverse children need conscious parenting 95% of the time (as opposed to 70% in neurotypical children).  It’s exhausting and you must make sure you are looking after yourself.”

“It's about decoding their sensory profile and finding what works for them”

“There is a need to accept that there will always be a level of anxiety, it is not about eliminating it but reducing it through empathy and understanding.”

“Empathy, calm, and understanding is what is required.  The time to tackle the behaviour is not “in the moment”.  A volcano that erupts will continue to erupt until the surface below stops bubbling.”

“In the workplace, employees need to be brave about communicating their needs with employers.”

“Challenging behaviour is a sign of distress – not a child (or person) being naughty.”  “Kindness and patience is what is required.”
