For anyone immersed in skateboarding during the late 1970s, Tom "Wally" Inouye remains an indelible figure. Among his numerous magazine covers, his three iconic Skateboarder covers stand out as hallmarks of his influence. Born in Los Angeles on January 22, 1959, Wally's journey into skateboarding began in 1967 when he repurposed his sister's roller skate wheels into a makeshift board. In '73, Wally earned the nickname "Wally" after inventing the wall ride, a revolutionary move that would shape the sport.

In '76, Wally turned pro and signed with Sims, dominating magazine coverage unlike any other at the time. He even pulled off back-to-back Skateboarder covers in '77, cementing his place in skateboarding history. Wally ingeniously launched Inouye's pool service in '76 a clever ploy to gain access to backyard pools for skate purposes! By posing as a legitimate pool service, Wally and his friends could drain the pools, skate, and then refill them without arousing suspicion. This also inadvertently provided Wally with valuable intel on prime skate spots.

Wally's passion for sideways sports extends to snowboarding, which he embraced early on after forming a solid friendship with his sponsor Tom Sims.  Wally was even lucky enough to test out the first snowboards made by Tom Sims! Wally instantly fell in love with snowboarding after Tom opened his eyes to this new sport that turned his local mountains into giant skateparks and the best thing was snow was so much softer than concrete.

In 2019, Wally's contributions were recognized with induction into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame. His pioneering spirit helped shape both skateboarding and snowboarding into the vibrant lifestyles and sports they are today. Sit back and immerse yourself in the stories of this true legend, whose influence continues to resonate throughout the skateboarding and snowboarding communities.
