Debs: Consent Doesn't Mean Safety; What Does It Mean? (TW: 19:30 - 19:40 descriptive violence)
Apr 10, 2024 Season 1 Episode 11

TW: sexual language, trauma, physical injury, death

Special trigger warning:  Brief graphic description of violence at approximately 19:30 in the episode.

In this first of two episodes, Derek sits down to hear from Debs.  Debs is a very busy psychologist, educator, speaker, and mom to adult children in the UK.  She has hosted over 7,000 presentations and cites approximately 75,000 hours in the line of serving others both clinically and professionally.  Debs works with and is an active part of the kink/BDSM community, but does not limit her work to those in the kink/BDSM lifestyle, also specializing in working with a variety of trauma victims - whom she sees as individual people with very different paths of healing.  She serves, as many of us do, offering some pro-bono work as well, giving back to her community, including speaking with Derek about her work.

She is on no therapist directories - including the one that her clinical supervisor created, all of her clients finding her through word of mouth, including parents who would like her to address their children's nightmares, and other symptoms of terror and fear.  She does not rush therapy as clients often require experiencing a great deal of trust and safety before diving into deeper and often murkier waters.

Debs also shares some of her own personal experiences in playing with others and some of the interpersonal dynamics, emotions, and even words, to communicate her expectations - some of which are not met when it comes to personal safety.

Unfortunately, I am not able to accept any Managed Medicare or Medicaid, regardless of the branding.

I am a sex-positive mental health counselor who specializes in griefwork and working within the space of non-traditional lifestyles, offering services to individuals, couples, families, other systems of multiple individuals.

A special thank you to Melissa Reagan for providing the voice talent over the episode theme music.
