Dai Manuel:

Hey there, wellness warriors, welcome back to another episode of the 2% Solution. I'm your host, diamond. Well, and today, another Mental Health Monday. We're diving into the fascinating and incredibly powerful topic for your personal growth and mental well-being, and it is none other than the law of accommodation. Have you ever wondered why some people seem to adapt and thrive no matter what life throws at them? Well, this episode is going to shed some light on why that mystery is the way it is. Let's start with.

Dai Manuel:

What is the law of accommodation? Well, simply put, it's the idea that our bodies and minds adapt to the demands we place on. Historically, this concept has its roots in biology and psychology, describing how living organisms adjust to changes in their environment to maintain optimal functioning. So let's get a little bit scientific here. The law of accommodation is closely linked to neuroplasticity. This is our brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections. A study published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience highlighted that our brains constantly adapt, allowing us to learn new skills and recover from injuries. It's like our brain is the super flexible, ever-changing muscle that gets stronger and more efficient the more we use it. Bring this to life. Think about learning to play a musical instrument like the guitar. At first, your fingers fumble, your brain struggles to remember the chords, but with consistent practice, your brain rewires itself and soon playing becomes second nature. That's the law of accommodation in action. Now let's discuss how understanding this law can boost your personal growth. Now let's discuss how understanding this law can boost your personal growth.

Dai Manuel:

Embracing the law of accommodation means recognizing that your brain and body are designed to adapt and improve. Carol Dweck, the author of Mindset, famously said Becoming is better than being. This supports the idea that growth and learning are ongoing processes, not fixed states. Overcoming challenges becomes more manageable when you understand that your brain is wanting to adapt. A study from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that individuals who see challenges as opportunities for growth are more resilient and better at overcoming obstacles. So next time you face a tough situation, remember that your brain is like a high performance engine it's ready to adapt and it's ready to conquer.

Dai Manuel:

Building new habits is another area where the law of accommodation shines. Research shows that forming a new habit takes an average of about 26, as much as 66 days. Now, there's a huge spread, and I know if you go and you start Googling, how many days does a form take to form a habit. You are going to get a lot of different references, but the consensus seems to be around this two to three month term. But the bottom line is key is consistency. Making small, consistent changes allows your brain and body to adapt gradually, making the new habits stick.

Dai Manuel:

Let's apply the law of accommodation to mental health. Stress is common, but managing it can make all the difference. Techniques like mindfulness and meditation can help your brain accommodate stress more effectively. Harvard Medical School conducted a study showing that mindfulness can reduce the brain's response to stress, leading to better emotional regulation and overall mental health. Mindfulness practices like meditation encourage your brain to form new pathways that promote calmness, while also reducing anxiety. By regularly practicing mindfulness, you're training your brain to handle stress more and more effectively. Emotional regulation is another area where the law of accommodation can help. By understanding your brain can adapt to new emotional responses, you can develop strategies to manage your emotions better. These might include techniques like cognitive behavioral therapy that's often known as CBT and this helps reframe negative thoughts into more positive ones.

Dai Manuel:

Now I had some questions that I well, I threw it out there. I invited people to throw some questions that I well, I threw it out there. I invited people to throw some questions as it relates to law of accommodation, as we're sort of leaning into this next hundred episodes and looking to make some shifts and really some more interaction with you, the listener. So when you see some of those posts, or specifically on Instagram, I tend to share, looking for feedback on different ideas or topics and always looking for potential questions to field on the show. So here's one of the questions how can I start integrating in the law of accommodation into my life, right Into life? I mean, that's a pretty good question. You know the easiest way to answer that is start small. I know it sounds like the cliche, easy way out, right, but incorporating daily movement, practicing mindfulness, setting achievable goals these are all things that you know, when done consistently, we tend to experience incremental changes, and I think that's just it right. Incremental changes, and I think that's just it right. Identify the smallest possible thing that you could do, and do right away to get that a little bit of inertia or momentum more so working for you. Right, because an object at rest, what's it want to do? Well, it likes to stay at rest, but something that's in motion likes to stay in motion and sometimes it takes a little bit of emotion to get that motion happening. So yeah, I think that's my answer to that one.

Dai Manuel:

There was one more question what's the best way to use this to build new habits? This I would imagine meaning this law of accommodation. Well, similarly to my last answer, I think it's focusing on one habit at a time. You got to be consistent and I know everyone hates hearing this, but you got to be patient. You know, forming a new habit If it does take about two to three months, you got to stick with it, right, like you got to sort of just let your brain and body and just your way of being adapt naturally.

Dai Manuel:

And I mean, if you try to force it and force it to happen really fast, we often realize that the first major incident and when I say incident, something that throws us off our routine on a day-to-day right, it's that thing that we couldn't expect or plan for, and it spins like maybe a car engine blows up, not while we're driving in it, of course, but all of a sudden now we're without a vehicle and it throws all of our appointments off and commitments and can't get to the gym, and so you know what I mean. And so we have to recognize that. You know, life does happen and and the unexpected can be expected, as weirdly as that sounds. Um, anyways, give yourself a whole lot of grace and just remember you're going to have some days that everything goes to plan and you're going to have days that it doesn't Plan. For the days that it doesn't, because those are the ones you'll like having at least. Okay, if that ever did happen, at least I could do this. And those that remember the pandemic.

Dai Manuel:

I think a lot of us were forced into that situation, maybe not by choice, right, but we were definitely put in a situation we're like okay. Well, here is my predicament. What can I, given the predicament to find myself, rather than thinking and obsessing about all things you could not do during that period of time, all right, getting to the sort of closing today, right? So, my friends, remember the law of accommodation is your brain's superpower. By embracing this concept literally, you should be able to experience this enhancement of your own mental health while also building new habits, and you'll find yourself developing more resiliency when it comes to just coming challenges. I might even go as far as say, it might be a little bit easier, and you know me, I don't like using the term easy. Simpler, yeah, but easy. But it's that feeling or that experience that maybe there's less resistance Because small, consistent changes lead to massive transformations Our beloved 2% philosophy in action.
