Speaker 1:

Hey there, welcome into the Ben Maynard program. Thanks for being here. Before we get started, a little bit of housekeeping to take care of. As you know, this show is available on multiple podcast platforms like Apple Podcasts, amazon Music and Spotify. Hold on a second Wait. This podcast is now available on iHeartRadio as well. Yes, it is Starting this week. It's available on iHeart, so let's see.

Speaker 1:

So this program is available on multiple podcast platforms like Apple Podcasts, amazon Music, spotify and iHeart Radio, or just search the Ben Maynard program. You'll have plenty of options to choose from, including the ones I just mentioned. So pick your option, or just go straight to Buzzsprout buzzsproutcom and look up the Ben Maynard program. How's that? However, if you can't resist all this right here, if you can't resist my pretty face and you're watching on YouTube, like tonight because it's Friday night, then please subscribe to the channel, give me a thumbs up and leave a comment. I always love your comments, I read them, you know it. There you go. Last but not least, follow me on Instagram. Simply Ben Maynard program, all one word. So with that, there are plenty of ways to take in this show for your dancing and listening pleasure. And here we go. It's Friday night. Wait a second, let's do this right. And it's Friday night and we are live. Yes, we are Date night with me, ben Maynard How's that? Pretty cool if you ask me but no one's asking. Yeah, so isn't that kind of cool. Well, I mean, it's cool for me that the podcast is now on iHeart. It wasn't certainly when we started, but it's taken a few months. It's not like it's a big deal and I had to go into negotiations with the people at iHeartRadio or anything. No, it's not. It was just a matter of me getting the profile set up on iHeart. Very simple really. It was like all of five minutes to get it done. I just hadn't done it Anyway. So I think that's kind of cool. Just another outlet for people to find the program. Maybe grow the audience a little bit more. That's all I'm trying to do here is just grow this audience to get it to, for me, a nice level, more than four or five people. I joke though, okay, I joke. So how's everyone doing? Huh, how are you doing today? Well, you know, today is let me look it up here Today is Pet, let's see.

Speaker 1:

Ah, there, it is Pet Remembrance Day, friday, july 5th, pet Remembrance Day, and I'm sure you can pretty much figure out what that means. Pet Remembrance Day can stir up a mixture of emotions. For those of who have loved and those who have felt the loss of a special pet, it's a day filled with memories of the happiness and fun times our furry friends brought into our lives. We remember you. Yes, we do so. Pet Remembrance Day. Happy Pet Remembrance Day to everyone out there. Yes, yes, and I have had my share of losses in the last few years regarding my pets. I love me some dogs and I love me big dogs. And, yes, lost my last one a little over a year ago, mac, my last Great Dane. So, pet Remembrance Day and I remember you, mac, but I remember all of my dogs. So, anyway, it is July 5th. Yesterday was Independence Day.

Speaker 1:

How was everyone's 4th of July? Did you have a good time? Did you have a backyard barbecue swim party? Did you go see a fireworks show? Did you light off fireworks? And, if so, did everybody come back with all their digits? Yeah, did you come back with all your digits? I hope so. Anyway, so, being that it is Friday night and we are live, all the usual stuff, all the same stuff we normally do We'll play Stump the Chump. We will have the Malort Challenge, which they're kind of both one in the same. You all know if you call into the program, I have to take a drink of this fine, fine tasting liquor right here. And if you call in with a music trivia question and you stump me, then I also have to take a drink. So if I'm asking you to call in, let's just do this right there. How's that? There's the phone number to the show. So call in. So 4th of July, yes, I hope you all had a good one.

Speaker 1:

Last week when we were together, I gave you some stuff like the top 10 items for your 4th of July barbecue. I hope that you were able to enjoy those. I hope that you were making a list, checking it twice, and you added some of those items if you didn't already have them on your barbecue list. So for me, I worked. I worked yesterday. No big deal.

Speaker 1:

In my line of business we are closed two days out of the year, and that's Thanksgiving and Christmas. Every other day we are open. Cisco is pretty much a seven-day-a-week operation, 363 days out of the year, not five. So yeah, so I worked. I had the option to take the day off and enjoy the holiday. But I figured what the heck. I'd already worked the previous three days. I was going to work today, so why not just run it five days straight? And when you get paid overtime for the whole day, why not? It's all good.

Speaker 1:

So let's get started with where we left off. Last week we left off, I left you guys, friday Night Live last week. Yeah, you know, I haven't seen the show itself because I generally don't watch them, but I do listen to them, most of them, I listen back to most of them, and I was surprised. I was surprised how well I sounded at the end of the broadcast because I was in. I was surprised how well I sounded at the end of the uh, at the end of the broadcast, because I was in pretty bad shape, thanks to my family and my friends and you know, kind of taking advantage of the um, of stump the chump. That wasn't really cool, I mean.

Speaker 1:

But you know normally when we're done with the show, whether we record or just like we're live, I do my thing. It, you know I get it posted to um when it's Friday night live. Anyway, I I post the um audio to buzzsprout. The video is already on YouTube, so I don't need to do anything there except add my show descriptions and those kinds already on YouTube. So I don't need to do anything there except add my show descriptions and those kinds of things and so I get everything published. You know, pretty much right after we stop stop the show. Well, uh, last Friday that was not the case because, if you guys remember, I did nine shots of Malort in an hour and 20 minutes. Now, this is not 80 proof liquor here, but it is pretty strong. So nine shots in an hour and 20, that's a lot.

Speaker 1:

And when we finished up here, I walked straight out of the studio into my bedroom, I took my clothes off and I pretty much fell into bed and I was asleep. I was probably asleep within seven minutes of this show finishing I don't know if that's passed out or falling asleep, I'm not sure which one it is within seven minutes of this show finishing. I don't know if that's passed out or falling asleep, I'm not sure which one it is. You help me out. I woke up, fine. I woke up fine. No hangover or anything like that, not a problem. I wasn't groggy, I wasn't any slower than I normally am, but I had slept wrong and, man, my neck and my shoulder, my trapezius here, oh, it was absolutely just killing me. It was throbbing. I remember waking up I don't know early morning hours and it was throbbing and I had a difficult time even going back to sleep.

Speaker 1:

So, as you know, I mentioned I had another show on Saturday. I had an interview that I was recording Saturday morning. So I'm thinking, oh my gosh, how am I going to handle this? I'm doing my microphone checks and camera checks and the usual stuff. Probably an hour or so before showtime and I called a Catherine. I told her bring the massage gun in here. We have one of those massage guns. He's in here working on me. We're doing camera tests and everything and I record them all so that I can go back and check everything. Yeah, she hit one spot and, oh my gosh, almost jumped out of this stool here and so we played it back. It was kind of funny to watch. One of these days I'm going to put together a whole blooper reel of all this stuff that goes on away from the recording of the show. So let's see. So, yes, friday Night Live. Thank you very much, family. Don't ever let that happen again.

Speaker 1:

And then, moving into Saturday, we had Rachel Thompson on the show. She's an author, she's written eight books. She's also a survivor of sexual abuse, so we talked about all that stuff and it was great. It was great, she's fabulous, and I know she's working on another book, so we will definitely have her on again. She was great. If you haven't seen that episode, dig in, dig in. There's just some really good stuff in it. She's great. She opens up a little bit. If you haven't seen that episode, dig in, dig in. There's just some really good stuff in it. She's great. She opens up a little bit. She doesn't go into great detail about her situation. It occurred when she was a child, but we really don't need all of the nasty details when it comes to that. But she was really good and, gosh, we went on for quite a while.

Speaker 1:

That was a. That was a pretty long show, um. So, yeah, check that one out. Oh, by the way, oh, I don't have it here, darn it. Oh, no, I do. Hold on, hold on.

Speaker 1:

We talked about. We talked about you know all her most of her books, and then we talked about. We talked about you know all her most of her books, and then we talked about a couple of them, that it seems like they're out of print. Well, I think I got the last copy of this one, a Walk in the Snark, and we did discuss this one during the, during the show, and you know, it's not written for a guy, it's written for a woman. But you know, maybe Catherine will take it in, who knows, maybe I'll read it too and maybe I can get some tips on how to improve some things about myself.

Speaker 1:

You know, we'll see Good stuff though. Let's see. Let me put my glasses on here here. Oh, you know what I want to do. Here's what I want to do right now. Oh, wait a minute. Do we have comments? Let me get on the comment. No, no comments yet. Okay, that's fine, that's fine. So we'll just do that. We'll stick with that for now. Oh, there we go, and um.

Speaker 1:

So I kind of most of the time I try to talk about some some new music, or I shouldn't say new music, but maybe new music from our classic artists that we like. Well, I remember last week I talked to you guys about going to see the band Voyage, the Journey tribute band, and what a great show it was, and at the time I had ordered their CD. I told you they had a CD of all original material, so I had ordered it, but it hadn't come in yet before we had, before Catherine and I had gone to the show, so I didn't have it before last Friday's show, but I just wanted to show you. There's the booklet that's the cover of the CD, right there and I think it is actually called Hugo's Voyage. The album is called Inception and it's got a nice little booklet in there and it's got the liner notes. It's got all the song lyrics, some artwork of the band in there. Take a look at that. Yeah, so it's really, really cool.

Speaker 1:

It's on Frontiers Records and if anybody is not familiar with Frontiers Records, it's an Italian company. They do have a US division of the company as well, but it started in Italy and I can't remember the owner's name. No, I can't. I've heard it before. But man, they do all kinds of stuff, they sign. You know, like you see, I don't know some of the artists that you really dig and they'll do like a special I shouldn't say special, but like a super group and they'll get in and they'll record and they do it under Frontiers label, because Frontiers is behind putting a lot of these super groups together. So this is really kind of cool. I mean, they release stuff every day. Frontier Records does Every day. They've got stuff coming out.

Speaker 1:

Then the next thing I wanted to show you all is this one right here from one of my all-time favorite bands, yep, loverboy. There it is, right there. That's brand new. It's not brand new music, it's Loverboy Live in 82. And what it is is a never-before-released show that they had done when they were on tour in 1982. My thinking well, this one here is I think it's recorded. There's a CD and a DVD. Sorry, I'm stumbling over my words here, just putting my thoughts together, but this is a show that was recorded in Vancouver, british Columbia. Oh, it says right here May 21st 1982. So that was actually post Journey Escape Tour, because, if you remember, loverboy opened up for Journey on that tour. Yeah, journey was already done with the escape tour.

Speaker 1:

Um, yeah, so what it does come with, it comes with the CD of the show. It comes with the uh. Yeah, I did say DVD, or maybe it's Blu-ray, whatever. It is kind of the same thing. But the packaging is really cool. It's got a booklet inside inside the uh, inside the cover here and basically it's kind of a biography on the band and a few liner notes. This was a project that Paul Dean was instrumental in. I think the video footage was in his archives, maybe the audio as well. But yeah, so a little biography or autobiography on the band and some good stuff, some cool pictures. When you open it up this, like I said, it's got a CD and a Blu-ray DVD.

Speaker 1:

But really good, really really good. I've already listened to it and I really I like it. It's a good. It's a good set list. See, we can go over the set list if you want to. Real quick, I'll put that book a little way later.

Speaker 1:

It starts with jump, then goes into lucky ones, then, lady of the eighties, uh, take me to the top, it's your life. Gangs in the street, turn me loose. The kid is hot tonight when it's over and working for the weekend. Yeah, yeah, good, uh, good stuff, good stuff. It, it, it, it sounds really good.

Speaker 1:

The band sounds so good and so, uh, so tight, I you know, and they just sound, not that, not that lover boy sounds bad now, because they don't. They actually sound great. But to hear them back in 1982, oh man, it's just so cool, just so cool. So, yeah, oh wait, let me see. Oh, I got a comment here. Oh, what is our next concert? Oh, oh, it's from Catherine. She's asking what our next concert is. Well, let's see. Um, we don't have tickets for any show just yet. But, um, yeah, I don't know. I know that, I, I, I know that.

Speaker 1:

I told Catherine that I just saw that one of my favorites, aldo Nova, is going to be back in Las Vegas at the golden nugget once again in November. Once again, but instead of it being November 10th it's November 15th. So I already told Catherine. I said we're going, we're going, we're going to get the tickets, we're going to hop a plane and we're going, but we won't do the 24 hour turnaround like we did last year. We'll, uh, I told her we'd stay for a couple of days. So, yeah, we're definitely going to go, uh, go see that show.

Speaker 1:

But other than that, I'm not sure what other concerts we have coming up. I know there's some shows I'd like to see. Speaking of Loverboy, they're out opening for Sammy Hagar and the Circle. Well, actually it's not the Circle, because it's Sammy, joe Satriani, jason Bonham and Michael Anthony, so that's not really the circle, but they're opening up for Sammy Hagar. It's the best of all worlds, I think it is is what they're naming the tour. Yeah, loverboy's opening those shows. That tour, I think it just started this week. So I think it started in Florida, maybe. So good stuff. So I would like to see that.

Speaker 1:

And another show I'd like to see is we'll get back into Foreigner again, even though you know this is Foreignner's second leg of their farewell tour. But it's a great build because you have John Waite in the special guest spot, then you have Styx and then Forner closes out the show, and I'd really like to see that. Actually, I think I already missed the show in our area, so I'd have to find something else somewhere to get to. But I don't know. We'll see what happens. I keep promising Catherine we'll go see a couple of country shows, but nothing comes up really, and nothing comes up that she is interested in going to see. So we just don't. But it's her choice. So, anyway, maybe I'll have to get her to Nashville to go see a country show.

Speaker 1:

Um, anyway, but uh, what else is going on? Well, we are in the middle of well, not in the middle we are getting close to being through our first month of summer and it started to make me think about summer songs, summertime songs, and so I just kind of threw a list together of some summertime songs. And if you want to jump in on the chat, or you want to leave a comment later on, or you want to text it in, or you want to leave a comment later on, or you want to text it in, or you want to phone it in, a summertime song that comes to mind for you, that would be awesome, that would be great. So I'm just going to run down this list that I put together. I don't even know if I counted how many there were, but I know it goes over to yeah, it goes onto the back page here in the show log, but I guess we'll just start right here. And they're not in any particular order. I just jotted these things down as they came to me and I just thought it'd be a really cool list to kind of share with everyone.

Speaker 1:

And you know what? Maybe you can jot this down and make a summertime playlist. Why not? Why not? Just you can play during your barbecues, you can play when you're outside doing yard work, whatever it might be. Let me take a sip of water here first. I feel like I've got cotton mouth for some reason and I feel as though my tongue is getting stuck to the roof of my mouth. Not good when you're trying to talk right, it just doesn't work. So, all right, let's start off the summertime song. We'll call it summertime song playlist. How's that? All right? So jot them down and add them to your playlist.

Speaker 1:

We'll start with Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys. Now, the Beach Boys. Is there any song about the Beach Boys or from the Beach Boys that doesn't make you think of summer? I don't know if there is. Let's see Next. School's Out. Alice Cooper Come on, I think every high school boy was singing that song when the final bell rang in school. When the final bell rang in school Last day, final bell bam, out the door singing schools out for summer. You know what a classic song.

Speaker 1:

What about Summer Breeze from Seals and Crofts? Yeah, I like it, and it's got summer right there in the title. In the title, you know, summer breeze makes me feel fine, rolling through the jasmine in my mind. Yeah, good stuff. I hope I hit the notes. Okay, maybe not. If your ears are bleeding, I I apologize. Let's see. How about Heat Wave from Martha Reeves and the Vandellas? Yeah, that's a cool one, that's a really cool one. Oh yeah, you got to have this one too. Hot fun in the summertime. Sly and the Family Stone Yep.

Speaker 1:

And for all of you out there that are right around my age, maybe a little bit younger, cruel Summer from Bananarama yeah, you have to have that one. Come on, it has summer in the title. You better have it on the list, right? It's kind of a cool song. It's just a, you know, bopping along song. It's a happy song, let's see. Okay, it's not a happy song because it's Cruel Summer, but it's got a happy beat to it is what I should say. And then again, surfing in the USA Beach Boys Come on, you had to. And surfing in the USA Beach Boys Come on, you had to. Oh yeah, good one.

Speaker 1:

Summer in the City from the Love and Spoonful Come on, you guys know that one, right, you know that one. All right, I already sang one. I'm not going to sing again. I don't want to punish you. All right, I already sang one. I'm not going to sing again. I don't want to punish you. All right, I'd like to keep the audience. All right, I don't want to lose anymore. I don't have enough audience to lose. So let's see. Oh yeah, oh yeah. Classic one Saturday in the park. Chicago had to had to add that one, of course, because every day is the 4th of July, right, and of course again the Beach Boys, california Girls right, I mean, I could have put Surfer Girl on there, but I went with California Girls. Like I said, I probably could have put a hundred songs from the Beach Boys on this list. I mean, beach Boys just says summer. Another cool one Under the Board says summer. Another cool one Under the Boardwalk. From the Drifters yes, and I know this one here. This next one is yeah, everyone's going to put this one on their list.

Speaker 1:

Rock Lobster, the B-52s. Yeah, that's such a cool song. It's just got a really really, uh, cool groove, just a really cool groove. What else we got? Surf city, jan and Dean. Yep. What else needs to be said about that? Surf city summertime beach. Come on, that Surf City Summertime Beach. Come on, oh yeah, summertime Blues, Eddie Cochran, you know there ain't no cure for the Summertime Blues, right? You know that one? How about this one? Rockaway Beach. From who? The Ramones? Yeah, the Ramones, that was like their favorite beach to hang out at home Rockaway Beach.

Speaker 1:

And this one I threw in too. You just have to. You just have to, especially, I think, about the time that this song came out. It was summer and there was the video for the song on MTV and the whole thing. It just says summer, vacation, the Go-Go's yeah, and I don't know if this one should top your playlist, but it is, without question. Just, it's a happy song, it's a real bouncy, real groovy song and it just has summer all over it. Walking on Sunshine from Katrina and the Waves yeah, I think that's cool, yeah. So just some ideas for your summertime playlist, if you want to. Yeah, why not? What else? What else? Oh, yes, so you know, I like my rock docs and even though I don't really get to watch very many of them, if any at all, just because of my schedule, I'm going to bring them up to you in hopes that you'll watch them.

Speaker 1:

Maybe you'll report back to me, but I think it was last week. It was maybe last week or week before. I can't gosh, I can't recall. Now Everything just flies by.

Speaker 1:

I was talking about the Nickelback documentary on Netflix. Well, when I mentioned it, I was about 10 minutes into it. Now I got through the whole thing. However, I was so busy doing other things at the time it was on I didn't really get to pay attention. I just would look up a little bit here and a little bit there at the television and just to kind of see what was going on. What I was paying attention to was really good. But now I'm going to have to go back over it again so that I can really, you know, grasp what was going on. I know I did like, like I said, what I had seen, what I was actually paying attention to, but I don't know. I do want to go back and watch it because I do like Nickelback. I really like that band a lot and they've achieved so much. So, moving away from that one, now there's one on Paramount+. It's called Nothing but a Good Time.

Speaker 1:

Now there was a book. I'm assuming that this is based on that book. There's a book by the same name that came out oh, two, three years ago, yeah, maybe about three years ago. Two, three years ago, yeah, maybe about three years ago and it's kind of about that mid-80s, late-80s hard rock scene. So it features a lot of those bands from that era, which is like in my wheelhouse, I just dig all that stuff. So this one I really got to, I got to dig into, I got to see this one. I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Speaker 1:

I still haven't even bought the book. I wanted to buy the book when, when it had come out, and yeah, I can order it anytime. But then it's going to end up on the shelf right here with all the other books that I haven't read, with all the other books that I haven't read. Actually, let me see, let me see here I don't know if I can move my tape down here, let me see if I can which ones have I not read besides the new three ones? The three new books A Walk in the Snark, the Notorious Texas Swindler and Broken People. So, aside from the three new ones, let's see, I have I am the warrior from holly knight.

Speaker 1:

Haven't read it, started to read it like I don't know two years ago and I wasn't able to do it. Uh, let's see the Gospel According to Luke. Yeah, I've read that. Jonathan Cain's book, don't Stop Believing. Yes, I read that. The Grand Illusion that's from Chuck Panazzo yes, I read that. Oh, my Appetite for Destruction that's Sex, drugs and Guns and Roses from Steven Adler Nope, haven't read it. The Grand Delusion yeah, I read that one. What else? What else? What else? Steven Tyler's book. I got about halfway through it and put it down. I didn't care for it, though I don't know why. I don't know. I'll probably have to try it again.

Speaker 1:

Those are just the music autobiographies. Let's see Paul Stanley's book yeah, I read it. Odyssey that's music from the elder yeah, I read it. Gene, ace, peter and Paul. That's the solo albums, the Kiss solo albums yeah, I read that. Let's see All those books on that shelf yeah, I've read. Okay, so I've got about four or five right here that I haven't read, that I need to get into, and then so many others that I want to buy, but you know why? So that I can have them on the shelf and they can collect dust. I love my autobiographies and I love books on the musicians, the bands, the artists that I really like. So I love all this stuff, but it's a matter of being able to squeeze it in, so I'm trying to do the best I can with it.

Speaker 1:

Then there's one more. If you guys remember way back when on VH1, there was a series that they ran, called Behind the Music. Well, apparently they have kind of relaunched that series and apparently they've taken some of the older ones and freshened them up a little bit but also produced some new ones. And I'm hearing great things about the episode featuring Wolfgang Van Halen. I'm hearing that there's a lot about Eddie in it. So, yeah, that one's really on my radar and I want to see that one really bad, and I want to see what some of the other ones they have produced also are. Like I said, it's all time, it's all trying to fit stuff in. I'll get to it. It's on my list. I have a list. That one also, that series VH not VH1, but behind the music. It's now on Paramount plus as well. So you got a couple more to check out. Nothing but a good time. And behind the music, wolfgang Van Halen, also on Paramount Plus.

Hey, so you see, what do I have here? I've got my Angel t-shirt Tour 2023. I don't think I've wore this one on the podcast yet. What is this? Oh, today is episode 55. And I don't think I've wore this one. So that's why I took it out of the closet and put it on. And, yeah, I'm just trying to be different. I'm trying to make sure I wear a different t-shirt every episode. Well, 55 episodes in, yeah, starting to get harder and harder to do, but that doesn't mean I have to go out and buy another 50 t-shirts to keep it going to 100 episodes. But yeah, it's getting a little hard. Another reason why every time I go to a concert, I got to grab a t-shirt or two. You know, you got to find some good graphic t-shirts, whatever they might be, and make sure that I have a wardrobe for this show.

Speaker 1:

You guys are worth it. You're worth it to me anyway. So, yeah, I'll tell you what we went. What did we do last week? We went like an hour and 20 last week and really Friday Night Live is only supposed to be about an hour, but we went over because of all the silliness and all the making Ben drink and get Ben drunk and all that good stuff. Yeah, really good. So we ran over because I had show to go through, had show to go through.

Speaker 1:

Well, I'm not going to keep you any longer. I'm going to let you guys loose. I'm going to cut you free. Maybe I'm going to let you free. I'm going to cut you loose. Yeah, there we go. That sounds much, much better. So, yeah, I'll let you guys go for Friday evening. You guys can enjoy the rest of your night, and with that, we're going to close up shop.

Speaker 1:

Well, before we do, though, I do want to shout out when is it here? I do want to shout out a there it is A happy birthday to my sister-in-law, debbie. Yeah, I don't do shout outs, and yet I did one last week and I'm doing another one this week saying happy birthday to my sister-in-law. Well, you know she watches this show, so I guess she deserves a happy birthday. Today is Debbie's birthday, july 5th, so if you know Debbie, you wish her a happy birthday too. How's that All right, anyway? So I won't keep you any longer, people. I'm going to let you get out of here. Enjoy the rest of your evening, get your weekend started. All that good stuff. All I can say is thanks so much for being here.
