Hello everyone, I am so excited to welcome you to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelley Jeffries and I will be your host. My goal is to answer these questions and so much more To share tips, education and inspiration around all of the components of wellness through solo and guest episodes. With 35 plus years as a health and wellness professional, a retired college professor, a speaker and a multi-passionate entrepreneur, I certainly have lots to share. However, my biggest goal and inspiration in doing this podcast is to share the wellness stories of others with you, to bring in guests who can share their journey so that we can all learn together while making an impact on the health, the wellness and lives of all of you, our listeners. The ultimate hope is that you leave today with even just one nugget that can enhance the quality of your life, and that you will. We all will, now and into the future, live our best quality of lives, full of energy, happiness and joy. Now let's dive into our message for today.

Speaker 1:

Hello everyone, and welcome back to Words of Wellness. My name is Shelley and I will be your host, and I wanted to hop in today and share about a really important topic that I believe can help you or someone that you know, and I recently was asked to speak at a local women's conference that is coming up in a few weeks, and I will be talking about toxins and reducing toxic exposure and what we can do to live a healthier, cleaner, more vibrant life, and one of the big challenges that we have as a nation is the issue of obesity. We have approximately two thirds of the United States population that is obese or overweight. It has tripled. The obesity epidemic has tripled since 1975. In 2016, more than 2 billion of us were overweight, and in 2016, 340 million young people ages 5 to 19 were considered overweight or obese. Now, I don't know about you, but that is very, very concerning, and we know that there is a connection between being overweight, being obese, and disease and illness. There is a higher chance that someone who is struggling with their weight is more prone to having chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and certain types of cancers. So it's a very, very, very important issue that many are dealing with and it's very concerning because it is not getting better. It appears to be getting worse and I wanna talk about something today with you all. That is the cause behind this. Some of you maybe are familiar with the term obeso genes.

Speaker 1:

What happens in our body is that when we are overloaded with toxins, they get stored in our fat cells, which then makes it very challenging to release weight and or fat, and we are bombarded with toxins on a daily basis. I have shared in past episodes briefly about this topic, but it is something that will be an ongoing topic for many, many years, I'm sure. We are exposed to chemicals in our food chemicals that are in food wrappers. We are exposed to chemicals in the air when we breathe. We are exposed to chemicals in the water that we drink. We are exposed to chemicals in our cleaning products. We are exposed to chemicals on the products that we put on our skin our lotions, our creams, our shampoos, our soaps, our deodorants I mean, the list goes on and on. So what I try to do. My goal is to share information with all of you in small amounts so that it's not completely overwhelming, and my goal is to give you small tips of things that you can do to help alleviate this problem and help to reduce your own personal toxic exposure and your family's toxic exposure.

Speaker 1:

So what is happening here? These toxins are getting stored in our fat cells and again, it is our body's effort to protect us. Really, one of the big concerns is a pesticide called glyphosate. Some of you are familiar with this. It is what is present in the roundup pesticide. It destroys our good gut bacteria and it interferes with our body's ability to absorb nutrients. So as the use of pesticides and chemicals has increased over the years, so has the incidence of obesity and chronic diseases. Some of the more common toxins that contribute to the obesogens are high fructose, corn syrup, msg, arsenic and other chemicals, parabens, fragrances and phthalates that we find in some of our skin care products.

Speaker 1:

So many times I come across or read someone who might say our bodies are miracles. Our bodies are able to cleanse and detox. We don't need to do any outside cleansing or detoxing from outside sources. But the answer to that is yes, we do because our bodies have been bombarded so much, and we are bombarded daily with toxins, that our organs cannot keep up. So, in a perfect world, yes, our organs, our liver, would normally be detoxing our body, but again, with the overload of toxic exposure and the fact that our liver has hundreds of jobs to do, it cannot keep up with all of the toxic exposure.

Speaker 1:

So think about this especially if someone has a poor diet, if they are eating processed foods, if they are eating foods that are high in fat, if they are not consuming a very nutritive diet, if it's very low in nutritional value, that is going to lead to toxic overload, which then leads to obesity, which then leads to fatty liver disease. Potentially so, with 70% of the population being obese and one out of three individuals will be diagnosed with diabetes at some point in their lifetime. This is a very concerning situation. When we experience toxic overload, it can cause our metabolism to be very sluggish, so therefore, that does not help us if we are wanting to release weight. It can also cause brain fog. It can increase inflammation and inflammation then leads to disease. It can also affect appetite regulation. So many times people might not know, or they might feel like they are hungry, but maybe they are just needing actually more nutrition in their everyday diet. It's not so much that they are hungry per se, they just are not nourishing their bodies in ways that our bodies need to be nourished.

Speaker 1:

So these are all root causes of obesity and chronic disease and, like I mentioned a little bit earlier, glyphosate, which is very commonly found in Roundup weed killer. How are we getting this in our foods? Well, it is sprayed on crops and if we consume any soy, corn or wheat, it's a very, very high probability that we are consuming some amount of glyphosate, and it has been connected to kidney failure, pancreatic failure. So I think what really needs to be addressed is not only how do we avoid some of these toxins, but how do we detox our bodies to the point that it's not. We're not going to be experiencing these very serious illnesses and diseases and again, it's the buildup of the toxins, it's the daily exposure that causes that overload. So if you find that you are struggling to lose release weight, this could very, very likely be the cause, and I share and have shared about this for many years.

Speaker 1:

I personally have taken part in a cellular cleanse on a monthly basis. It's part of my wellness routine and feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to know more about what I do on a regular basis. But I was just hearing a doctor say that if we think doing one or two detoxes per year is enough, it is not enough. He said we need to be taking action regularly, daily lifestyle choices, to help us reduce our exposure and to help us release some of these toxins. So, for starters, we can be aware of what we're putting in our bodies.

Speaker 1:

One thing that is really important is to try and eat organic foods as much as possible, and now I know that this can be costly at times. So something that I have followed for years, for starters, is the clean 15 and the dirty dozen list of produce items. So when you go into the market, it is a guide to help you know what produce items have a have higher levels of pesticides and toxins and which ones have lower. So, therefore, it's a guide to help you know what fruits and vegetables do I need to purchase organically and which ones do I do I maybe not need to get organic. So, for example, on the list of the dirty dozen, it includes items such as apples, strawberries, grapes, bell peppers, potatoes. That's just a few of the items on the list. So I know for me personally that when I go to the market, I'm going to only buy those organic. If there aren't any organic strawberries, I won't buy them. If the organic strawberries are extremely expensive, I still won't buy them. But many times when they are in season during the summertime, the summer months, there are a lot of organic options and there are a lot of times they're lower in price at that time as well. But this is just a really great guide, I believe, when it comes to the produce. So some of the items such as bananas or millens that have like a thick grind or covering to them, those we might not need to purchase organic. So those are on the clean 15 list. So items such as that I don't usually get organic. So that is something to follow.

Speaker 1:

We want to also eat foods that are as close to nature as possible. So what does that mean? Well, in a perfect world, if we had land and we had a farm, that would be ideal, so that we are eating food that is just picked from the garden, picked from the tree, so that it's as close to nature as possible as we pick certain products, fruits or veggies from the trees or from the ground right away they start to lose their nutritional value. So if we think about, by the time we get those foods in our homes from the market in our homes and then we cook with them or they sit in our refrigerator for a few days, whatever it might be, the nutritional value has continued to decrease. So when we finally get it into our bodies, many times the nutritional value is very low. So if we can eat foods as close to nature as possible, that is wonderful.

Speaker 1:

Strive for nutrient-rich foods, less toxins, less chemicals, less pesticides and less artificial ingredients in the foods that we consume that's what we want to really strive for and we want to build this into our lifestyle. This is so important, everyone. It's again, not something that we just do today and then we don't think about it for months down the road. This has to be a lifestyle. We need to build our lifestyle around detoxification. We want to focus on the best that we can breathing in clean air, drinking clean water and eating clean food. And now I know that it's not going to happen 100% of the time, and I'm the first one to say that this is not about being perfect in any way, shape or form, because that is never going to happen.

Speaker 1:

But this is about being aware and just being proactive and taking steps that will help us and our families be healthier, because, ultimately, we want to strive to keep our pathways working as clearly as possible so pathways in our bodies such as our lymphatic system, our liver, our gut, our colon and our urinary system. So we want to be sweating regularly, urinating regularly. I actually heard a doctor recommend that we should be urinating every one to two hours throughout the day, having regular bowel movements one to three times a day. All of these are things that help our body detoxify on a daily basis. However, it's not enough. We want to make at the minimum, we want to make sure that those pathways are working clearly and healthily for our bodies. And then, on top of that, there are other things that we can do to help cleanse and detoxify our bodies, and again, there are a lot of different options out there and a lot of different things that we can do, and feel free to reach out to me, contact me through my information in the show notes if you'd like to know what I have done for almost a decade on a monthly basis that has helped me, I'm happy to share.

Speaker 1:

But the point of this really is to let's really collectively be looking at ingredients, be looking at what we're putting on our bodies, be looking at what we're cleaning our homes with, be looking at the water that we're drinking and the air that we're breathing. My friends, these toxins are everywhere, and I don't say this to scare anyone or to sound dismal in any way. I say this in a way to we need to make a difference for ourselves, for our lives, for our families, for just our health. We have to be proactive. We are going to do it for us, and I want to encourage you to take steps in one to two areas. So there are definitely so many products that we can swap out for healthier, cleaner versions, and I do have a program that I offer to my listeners at a discounted rate. That's called Purge your Pantry, and I do this with individuals, where I will either one go into your home or jump on a Zoom call with you and we can go through your refrigerator, we can go through your pantry, we can go through your cleaning products and I can make recommendations of healthier options. So, again, feel free to reach out to me if you'd like to have more information on that as well, but I want to encourage you to take one to maybe three items and set the goal for yourself to swap them out with healthier, cleaner options. So, again, small steps, they add up over time and I don't want this to lead to overwhelm.

Speaker 1:

I just want this to lead to education for you all, awareness for you all and motivation for you to start taking action, if you're not already doing so, because this is a huge issue and it is getting worse and it is affecting our children, which is alarming. I don't know how many of you know this, but babies are being born with over 100 chemicals in their system. There has been chemicals found in newborn babies umbilical cord blood, so if that is not alarming, I don't know what is. It is getting into mom's bloodstream, it's getting in past, along to the unborn babies, and so this is something we have to take action on and start to really take steps to making a difference so that we can all live healthier, cleaner lives, we can all feel energetic, we can sleep better, we can have less stress and just have more energy and a more vibrant life overall. So I hope you find this helpful.

Speaker 1:

Today. I really wanted to hop in and just share some of the these highlights with you that I have been educating others on for quite some time. I will be sharing some of this information in the upcoming conference where I will be speaking locally, and I just really want to continue this conversation with you all and I will continue to bring this information to you and in some ways I might sound like a broken record, but that might be okay if this is what it takes to get the message out so that we start taking really, really serious action on this topic of toxic overload and obesity and our overall health. So again, thank you for listening. Please feel free to share this episode and any of the episodes with someone that you feel would benefit.
