Hey guys, welcome to the Zero Fear English Podcast.
A podcast to help English Learners improve their listening skills so they can acquire the English language.
In this podcast, I will tell the same story twice.
First Iāll tell the story slowly and clearly and then once again at natural speed.
Remember to stay for the natural speed version after listening to the slow version!
Today, Iām going to tell you about some famous food from Scotland. Some famous dishes from Scotland.
First, Iāll begin with the most obvious one.
Some of you might have heard of this one already.
The food is called Haggis.
What is Haggis?
Well, as defined by the Cambridge dictionary, Haggis is a dish from Scotland which consists of different sheepās organs that are cut up with onions and spices and cooked inside a sheepās stomach.
What do you think? Does it sound tasty?
Some people might think that sounds disgusting, but in my opinion, it tastes nicer than it sounds.
Haggis is eaten with many different meals.
Sometimes in a full Scottish breakfast, which can be different variations of haggis, eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato, hash browns, black pudding and baked beans.
Black pudding is a type of sausage made from pigās blood, fat and grain.
Haggis is also eaten in a Scottish meal called Haggis, Neeps and Tatties.
Neeps and Tatties are Turnips and Potatoes. Thatās just what Scottish people call them
Neep is Turnip, Tatty is Potato.
Haggis, Turnips and Potato. Haggis, Neeps and Tatties.
The next food Iām going to talk about is called Stovies.
Itās a dish made with potatoes, onions, fat and pieces of meat. Often Beef.
Historically, it was made with leftover meat. Nowadays, people prepare meat especially for it.
It is often served with oatcakes, which is a type of biscuit made with oats, and beetroot.
The name comes from the way theyāre cooked. The verb āto stoveā means āto stewā in Scottish apparently. I didnāt know that myself though.
I thought it was because theyāre cooked on a stove.
Stovies are tasty though.
The third food Iām going to talk about is called Cullen Skink.
This is a thick soup made with smoked haddock, which is a type of fish, potatoes and onions.
Potatoes and onions are very popular ingredients here.
I donāt have much to say about this one.
Itās a soup. It smells very strongly of fish.
Itās also tasty.
The last thing I want to talk about is the infamous deep fried mars bar.
It is exactly that. A mars bar that has been deep fried.
It might sound like a strange idea, but it surprisingly tastes pretty good.
The combination of batter, oil and a chocolate bar works well together.
However, it is very unhealthy. So itās something you shouldnāt eat often.
Before I finish this episode, I also want to mention the famous Scottish soft drink, Irn Bru.
Itās an orange soft drink and itās very sweet and fizzy.
I donāt know how to describe the flavour. In Scotland, Irn Bru IS a flavour.
Anyway, thatās all for today!
I hope you enjoyed this episode.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions to make this podcast better.
Take a look at the transcript if youād like to read what Iām saying.
And we will see you in the next episode!
Cheers guys and bye for now!
and now for the more natural version
