‘AI for President’ sounds far-fetched, but the temptation is there. As the journalist and editor Joshua Davis wrote in a Wired article in 2017 -

“We elect politicians who we hope will embody our ideals and values, only to be sorely disappointed when they seduce interns and demand briefcases of unmarked bills. An AI president offers the possibility of delivering a purer form of government.”

0:00

Can AI ever become the president of the United States?

0:03

No, why not?

0:05

Well, because on August 29th, 1997 Skynet woke up and decided all humanity was a threat to its existence and the end.

0:27

Thanks for listening.

0:28

Cheers.

0:30

Ok.

0:30

We have more to say on that.

0:31

But you get the gist.

0:33

Welcome to.

0:34

What are we a podcast powered by?

0:35

CallHub, the one stop digital campaigning platform for all those who want to make the world a better place in this podcast.

0:41

We ask questions about policy, elections, and democracies and nondemocracies as we hear from all sides and ask them to make their case so you can decide for yourself.

0:50

What really are we now back to AI. AI for president sounds far fetched.

0:57

But the temptation is there. As journalist and editor Joshua Davis wrote in a Wired article back in 2017, we elect politicians who we hope will embody our ideals and values.

1:09

Only to be sorely disappointed when they seduce interns and demand briefcases of unmarked bills.

1:14

We want our politicians to embody our highest ideals.

1:16

They usually don't.

1:18

And a president offers the possibility of delivering a purer form of government.

1:22

One focused on the ideals we elect our presidents to represent, which is as utopian in 2024 as it was in 2017.

1:30

Because this imagines AI as being trained to be the best of humanity. But who would train the AI? I'm not sure I want Mark Zuckerberg's latest AI - the "I'm totally real human president" model 3.76 to be the next president of the global superpower proudly sponsored by Meta.

1:47

This is why a pioneer in AI Lee Kun signed an open letter to President Biden in November of 2023 calling for the government to ensure that AI remains open source. As the letter states, the trajectory of AI's future should not be under the control of a select few corporate entities. Which is true, and we fully agree.

2:06

But let's assume our AI is not corporate and let's assume that an A I indeed takes office as the president of America.

2:14

What do you think is going to happen next?

2:16

Watching John with the machine.

2:19

It was suddenly so clear, the terminator would never stop, it would never leave him and it would never hurt him, never shout at him or get drunk and hit him or say it was too busy to spend time with him.

2:35

It would always be there and it would die to protect him.

2:41

Of all the would-be fathers who came and went over the years.

2:45

This thing, this machine was the only one who measured up.

2:49

Yeah, that's probably gonna happen too.

2:51

But also, we will have far fewer affairs, sexual dalliances, and whatever

2:56

Eyes wide shut parties, these various leaders have been up to once elected to power.

3:00

Hopefully, hopefully, AI will never have to swear I did not have sexual relations with anyone or anything without the ability to lie.

3:10

And AI will never utter the famous lines, my heart and best intentions still tell me that's true.

3:15

But the facts and evidence tell me it is not. Reagan, you smiling liar. And AI will not suggest citizens drink bleach to cure COVID.

3:25

Nor will it allow military campaigns to go on forever because it had no plan to begin with and even less of a plan to end them.

3:32

And AI, very important here, does not need a board seat in a financial institution after its term to earn $100 million a year for its Children.

3:41

Most critically.

3:42

Of course, AI, with access to the entirety of human knowledge at the speed of light will never be uninformed, forgetful or driven entirely by bias, racism or waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

3:54

Decisions will be taken immediately with a full context and all available resources will be mobilized.

3:59

You're not going to forget to tell somebody to send out the National Guard and all of it can happen without visiting any sex island in the Caribbean or attending an illuminati meeting in Europe.

4:11

The bottom line is that an AI president could make smarter decisions full stop.

4:16

An AI President is a fantasy for now.

4:18

Humans would never allow it.

4:19

But hey, with all the talks of AI soon surpassing human intelligence, skynet could just be around the corner and so could an A I president, we may be on the cusp of a new world and we must not be afraid that's not who we are, is it?
