All right, so we're going to jump right into our tech talk this afternoon and this afternoon I'm going to talk to you about a topic that afternoon and this afternoon I'm going to talk to you about a topic that obviously we've been mentioning it on this podcast a number of times. Today we won't specifically jump into AI, but we're going to talk about something that AI needs a lot of, which is computing resources and, more specifically, around data centers.

Y'all, y'all heard of data centers before right yes, how about you, remy?

you said you heard it before. Yep, yeah, I mean. The way that I like to describe data centers are literally just think of them as a warehouse size building filled with computers. Now people be asking why do you need data centers? And the thing about it is is that every single device your laptop, your phone, your internet of things, your Siri's, your Alexa's, all of those things need to talk to another computer. And where are those computer housed then? Or where are they reside at? They reside inside data centers.

Now, the thing inside data centers, now the thing about data centers, is that most people don't even know they exist, but they are by far one of the most important things for us to traverse the internet and or access all these cool websites instagram, facebook, amazon and all of that right, or google, especially because they're probably one of the largest, larger data centers. But more specifically, um, the idea in talking about data centers has started to become even more popular because the invention of ai. Now, I know that ai is usually always a topic that we cover, um, like I said during this podcast here, but the cool thing about it is is that data centers are where I used to hang out at all the time. I don't know if y'all knew, but uh, I used to work in a data center down in Miami called the NAP of America. Y'all ever heard that one before?

It's literally one of the biggest network access points in South Florida or the Northeast no, the Southeast, I apologize that connects all of the Caribbean, all of South America. There's literally fiber optic cables that run under the ocean from Europe all over the world and comes directly into this building. Remember I said it's a warehouse size building and when you get those network connections then we set up computers and those little, literally computers are the ones that you all talk to on a daily basis. I mean, you're probably watching this on YouTube right now you're talking to a computer inside of a data center and the thing is is that this topic about data centers is actually starting to come up even more because of the invention of AI. But I was just reading something this afternoon or this morning where it was like hey, they're about to be like a 430% increase in the amount of data center needs in the near future. So you know our show is always focusing on upscaling, so big shout outs to everybody that's really just trying to level their skills up and not just only focus on software engineering or engineering as a whole. Is learning how data centers works potentially could be a career opportunity for anybody, because you can be a systems engineer, you can be a network engineer, you can be a fiber optic network engineer. I mean, you can literally be someone that supports the core infrastructure of the internet by working in places and buildings like this. And the reason why I bring this up in terms of just upscaling is the another portion in this article mentioned that microsoft is about to spend. I believe it said. Let me read it says about to spend $66 billion. I apologize. It says Microsoft is about to. I apologize. Microsoft said they're going to spend $3 billion to go build new data centers all over the country and it's going to employ over 2,000 people to basically help support and manage these. Yeah, so definitely big shout-outs to Microsoft for remembering understanding the growth and need for these type of buildings and infrastructure, but also the potential for job opportunities for people that are trying to upskill in the era of AI.

Now, where are these buildings mostly at? Which is something that you all catch inside of the Discord, because I'm going to actually drop the link in there for you all to take a look at these sites. These locations are all over the country. At these sites, these locations are all over the country and the most common places that you'll find data centers is over on the East Coast. You'll see them in New York, new Jersey, in the tri-state area.

Northern Virginia has a huge data center footprint and Northern Virginia is maybe mostly focused on like government, data center and floor spaces Atlanta, atlanta, georgia is always big and then you get to the center of the country, where you get Dallas up to Chicago and then you go out west from Phoenix, la, silicon Valley, seattle and Portland Oregon, which big shout outs to Seattle, portland Oregon. They definitely have a lot of data centers and support for you know engineers that are focusing on that. I don't know if y'all ever walked into one before, but number one it's like walking into a deep freezer, like you ever go to a grocery store, and you open up that door and it's like. My grandfather used to be a butcher, so I used to go into those stores I used to go in.

That's what it is, but just like those freezers uh, that's what data centers are because you have to provide so much more cooling, because, I mean, you're on your cell phone, you ever touch your cell phone and see how hot it gets sometime, or you're like running an app or your laptop starts, the fan starts to blow and those data centers, those computers, are running 24 hours a day, and just imagine how much heat they create, but also how much cooling has to be introduced so that they can keep them cool.

Because I don't know if y'all knew this, but one of the things that I learned early in my career was that computers automatically have sensors that if they reach a certain temperature, they'll shut off. Like you won't even know why, they'll just boom, they'll just turn right off. And two sides of the coin yes, it's freezing when you go in there, but if you go in the aisle that's behind, it's probably one of the hottest places. It's hotter than when we went to New Orleans a few years ago.

Yeah, that's how hot it is. Dang, I just kicked the whole table, my bad, but data centers themselves have some really cool tech in there.

What's upmond? Yeah, no, um, great, great about the data center. So I have a great data center story. So, um, when I first got into it, my first job in it uh worked for a company called perot systems corporation. So I don't know if you guys remember, uh, ross perot, he's passed away now.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, he owned like a tech firm or something he owned an information technology company.

Speaker 2: 8:44

He tried to run for president. I think he got like what 1% of votes or something like that.

Speaker 3: 8:49

Yeah, yeah, it's because of his ears, yeah.

So, but yeah, Ross Perot. So yeah, sure enough, he had a technology company called Perot Systems and I worked for them for like a year. So so, anyway their rumor or fairy tale. I don't know if this is a folk tale, but they had a folk tale that the way they got their clients were they had a huge, huge headquarters at a data center in Plano Texas and the rumor is how they got all their customers was they'd go show them the data center because it was like the most impressive data center any technology company has seen.

So they just show their customers a data center and they allegedly would get the customers just like that because it was just blown away.

So I don't know if that's a folk tale.

Yeah, shout out to Westboro, yeah, rip. And Westboro Systems has been incorporated by Dell, so now Dell bought them out, shout out to Dell. Shout out to Dell, big shout out to Dell. A little story there for you guys.

Yeah, right today. So, yeah, a big shout out, a little story there for you guys. Yeah, yeah, I mean one other thing that I remember, uh, raymond's nuggets always coming in. Uh, one other thing I remember about data centers is like how, how sometimes stuff would stay in there for so long and then you freaking get a chance to to shut it down.

Finally, that's something that you got to experience, raymond, working in data centers what's that like shutting down old hardware and oh, yeah, absolutely yeah, yeah, we shut down old hardware all the time.

Yeah, yeah, I remember. So I used to work at the South Florida Water Management District. Big shout outs to DP Stephen there and those out there. They've gone past or left. I apologize, they long left the district. But when we used to run um before sap so before we started to do sap bases and stuff like that we used to have this financial system on an operating system called vax. It's like almost as old as as400. You remember as400?

yeah, I do remember, yeah, yeah like it's the green screen and you gotta press tab. Yeah, exactly right. And I remember when we worked on that system to finally deprecate it. First of all it was like literally the size of a whole rack and it was like how in the world does that have to be the financial system where, when we moved to sap, we moved into like one? U computer and maybe like a four? U computer?

But the story behind it is is that working in those data centers, you sometimes don't realize how old the hardware that's in there and also how frequently or how infrequently we change things in those data centers. So when you build them, you build them and then that's it. You don't really change much. But also systems come in and out.

But decommissioning old hardware or working in data centers is something that I've always enjoyed, like the first time I set up. You know fiber optic cables connecting, you know computers from one side of the country to the other side or, more specifically, running disaster recovery. Did you all do any disaster recovery at your spot? No, yeah, yeah. So we used to have like a disaster recovery data center. So it's like, hey, if data center number one goes down, then everything goes to data center number two, and it should be designed in a way that you know customers wouldn't even really know about it, but you also got to run tests to make sure that that hardware that you're not using at the other data center is still good, just in case. So yeah, I used to fly up to Atlanta all the time when I used to work at Citrix to go do data center disaster recovery plans or executions.

Just to see how you know stuff like that work. And then, obviously, while I worked at Twitter, that was like the biggest data center I ever walked in my life, like literally. It was like literally football field size right.

Speaker 1: 12:13

You walk in one side and you're looking down the aisle and it's like yo, it just goes forever. And then all of a sudden you see these waves with heat coming by and, like I said, you walk in one aisle it's cold, the next aisle is hot and it was probably one of the loudest places I've ever been in my life, like oh yeah, yeah and the data center was on site at twitter no.

So we had data centers, uh, throughout the country, um, there was one on the east coast, one on the west coast, um, and then we obviously had smaller data centers at something called pops. So pops are basically a point of presence or network access points that you basically are able to literally almost like run a cable from, let's say, miami directly to where our data center was on the East Coast, and what we would do, instead of having you go through that line, we would say, hey, why don't you go to this computer that's right on the edge of the internet.

That's actually something that's really cool about, um, pops and data centers is that some of these buildings you think that they're one company in there where they're actually hundreds of companies that put small pieces of their infrastructure and these data centers so that they can make the user experience a little bit better gotcha, because they don't want you to have to go all the way to the other side of the country or, you know, literally around the world to access data, um, but, yeah, that's how we had it at twitter and I mean, like I said, one of our buildings we had, you know, over a hundred thousand nodes or a hundred thousand computers in there, close to two hundred thousand computers, um, and it just blew my mind, and where we are right now, because all of these reports that I'm reading right now, including twitter, they're going to be increasing their data center footprints by hundreds of times.

So it's like, hey, if they had a hundred thousand today. Within the next five years, they're going to have two to three hundred thousand computers, and data centers are going to be a new market, um, and definitely a new real estate, in my opinion. So, um, yeah, it's crazy okay yeah, yeah, no doubt.

All right. So that's going to wrap my tech talk about data centers. I do want to encourage you all to check out the post inside of our Discord, because they are coming. Data centers are going to be everywhere and potentially an opportunity for you all to level up in terms of you know career advancement, especially if you're thinking about doing more than just software engineering and you want to get into other engineering fields, something like systems engineering and stuff like that. That I'm really excited about. And actually I just read this X is about to invest $10 million in a new data center. X aka Twitter, in the next two years. So that's crazy. That's crazy $10 million.

Yeah, because you need something to talk to on the other side, right Like our phones. A lot of people think that there's a lot what happened.

But, yes, there will always need to be something on the other end. Because you can't install, like the thing is that a lot of people don't know, like the things that you install on your phone are just apps, right, and the apps are only a small piece of the whole infrastructure that you connect to. Or we were talking about the other day like fat clients, like a lot of people don't install fat clients no more.

Most of it's web-based right. So what? When you open up a browser and you go to a website, you're talking to a computer that's in a data center, and now all those connections mean they're going to need to have more data centers, as people are getting more connected, so they're they're not going away.

I don't know what, what the next iteration of you know how we store stuff centralized in an aggregate way, but I I say data centers are going to be. I think data centers are going to be like literally I think the United States is going to consider them national security type stuff.

Um, I guess they wanted to use her voice for AI. I guess she happily declined it. For some reason, it says, I guess OpenAI and Blogpost posted that she'd been approached for an extra voice for ChatGBT after five days, after five already have been chosen, including voices that alarm Johansson. Then she was approached again 13 days before the launch, just to make sure if she's willing to do it again, and she again declined. So then, I guess, since she declined, they opened up a new one called Sky, and it just mimics her voice. Wow, exactly.

And after she heard this, everything went haywired.

She's like yo y'all need to write me a check and uh, literally that that's crazy. So open. Ai had their release last week. We had talked about it on our show um, and I didn't know that they were using her voice. She supposedly did you ever see that movie? There was an AI movie called Her H-E-R where this guy literally was falling in love with an AI.

So that's kind of like the idea of voice where they got it from. But I guess OpenAI tried to get her to sign up and she said, nah, I'm good, and they still used her voice.

Well, it's not supposed to. From what Sam Altman says, I guess the founder of OpenAI, basically saying we wasn't trying to mimic her voice. But how do you contact her more than several times to see if it's okay to use her voice? No, I don't make any.

that? Mean, this is almost like you're one of your biggest complaints about ai. Right, I'm actually want to hear what your thoughts are, but if you think about it, they're literally just, you know, uh, not caring if you don't have anything positive and or contributing to it and they're just going to use it. I mean, it's easy enough to listen to her voice. The ai automatically captures it and press play and then they got it. I mean, I can get her voice too, type stuff. So my only thing is that this right here is just going to open up what the process is going to be if somebody does something like this and lawsuit-wise and checks, I don't know how it's going to play out.
