Nabilah and I discussed our journeys as Muslim hijabis living in the West. To some, the hijab represents a sign of oppression, to us the hijab represents courage, faith, and identity. More importantly, wearing the hijab represents our relationship with Allah. For Nabilah and myself, embracing the hijabi identity has been a journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. We realized it's all internal too, while there are a lot of external pressures on the way, working on ourselves internally outweighs all of the external pressures we come across.
Nabilah and I understand that not every hijabi gets a chance to express themselves the way they want, nor have a safe space to do so. However, one of the main goals of SWYK is to create a supportive community of like-minded individuals that fosters a sense of belonging and sisterhood. This will allow education and engagement because actively educating ourselves, and others about Islam and its teachings will break barriers, and bridge gaps by talking and building relationships with different people.
