In an age where constant upgrading seems to be the norm, teacher Tan Woan Chyn has hung on to the same ceramic bowls that held the meals of her childhood. She still uses them, and this has helped keep the memories of her hometown fresh in her mind.
Tan’s happy childhood was spent in a kampong house on Pulau Ubin. The family had to move to mainland Singapore for her education, but retained ownership of their old family home in the village. Although it was left standing empty most of the time, the family still returned from time to time to clean up - and reminisce about the happy moments they spent there.
The seemingly nondescript bowls had come from this house too, following her into adulthood.
