Let me sow love.

“Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love.” - Francis of Assisi

It’s easy to become overwhelmed by all the negativity around us in the world. It’s easy to fall into despair when we comprehend the scale of injustice and inequality.

Too often we have a tendency to stand frozen looking for somebody, somewhere to do something. Too often we fail to look within ourselves to see what we might do, how we might respond.

Many years ago now, in the face of a difficult and dysfunctional family situation, I asked God to show me how to bring redemption to it. I heard God answer me within my spirit: “You have to change.”

Not exactly the answer I was looking for. But through it I learned that no matter what anyone else did, and no matter what was going on, I needed to respond with love, grace, compassion, dignity, and patience.

I needed to become the instrument of peace. I believe that this prayer, Francis prayed needs to become our prayer too.
