We're so excited to have you here with us for episode two. Today, we're diving into something close to our hearts. How we got into van life. We'll be sharing the highs and lows of making this big life change, the challenges we didn't see coming, and the incredible excitement of starting this journey together. Yeah, we've got stories from downsizing all our stuff to learning how to live in such a tiny space with our dog and cat. It's been a wild ride, but we're figuring it out together. And we're here to give you an honest look on what van life is really like. Cause I know that was definitely something I was curious about when we first started. We're also going to touch on those unforgettable first adventures, the ones that made all the challenges worth it. So if you're curious about what it's like to live on the road, or you're just here for some good stories, you're in the right place. Make sure to connect with us on social media, share your own stories, or ask us any questions you have about van life. We're all about building a community of fellow adventurers. So buckle up and let's get started with today's episode. We've got a lot to cover and we can't wait to take you along for the ride. Why we chose van life. So let's start with why we decided to hit the road and live in a van. For me, it was definitely about freedom and getting out of like the nine to five grind. Like I was working in an accounting office. I had the nine to five, 40 hours a week. We had a two bedroom apartment. It was really nice. We had our own office set up. But then I felt that I was not. Doing as much as I wanted to do, because I was comfortable in my house. And for me, it was just a fun, adventurous way to get rid of landlords. neighbors, because they're obnoxious. Spending more time in the woods, away from people. Everybody and just getting to live freely with my love and our little fur animals a little furry animals Definitely neighbors though. Oh my gosh. We've had some interesting neighbors and i've always lived in apartments So not having a neighbor to worry about like we're being loud today No, it's fine. We're in a park, and we have no neighbors, no landlord, and no stupid notes left on your door just wannabe cops and actual cops. traveling the country was a dream of ours. And I think your dad had a lot of inspiration for that, right? Yeah, shortly Before he went to college him and some buddies traveled through europe on Skateboards and made a whole adventure out of it. I don't remember how long they were there but he definitely had some fun stories throughout it and it was kind of my inspiration for the whole Doing this thing as well for the dad lore you're gonna need to have fun stories. You're gonna need some crazy stories. We're gonna need some crazy adventures. to teach other people from and I think it's so cool that he's so encouraging of this. I would think a lot of parents are going to be very scared like my mom is scared for us, but your dad is so excited for you. I love that and it's just going to be really fun. Love that there's so many people who have advocated for us to have this type of life. And then the nice part as well, we're just kind of being able to see more of our country, not necessarily leave the country. I don't think we're going to be doing that, but we'll be able to at least see more than just Washington, and the PNW for once. Yeah, because you've only ever been in Washington, right? Mm hmm. Yeah, and I haven't traveled much further outside of it. I haven't done much traveling east, really, at all. The furthest I've gone is Lake Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Yeah. So, it'd be nice to see more than, Rainforest and mild arid desert. In Idaho. In Idaho. Oh my goodness. I'm so excited to see like, small towns and stuff. Like, giving Gilmore Girls, I'm trying to find that little small town life. This is true. That will be fun. Let's hope they treat newcomers better than the cast of Gilmore Girls. What do they mean? To new people? I guess, yeah, they kind of were. Anyone that showed up was questioned they're like, mm, who are you? What business do you have? I guess that's fair, but then how do you not know if they're crazy? You gotta have like an initiation process. We're cool people. I feel like people get that vibe Yeah, and let's move on to some of our initial challenges. It definitely wasn't all sunshine and rainbows at the beginning. We had so much to learn. We had so many challenges we faced. Yeah, one of those had to be downsizing all of our belongings to be able to Not even get what we wanted in the van because that was still too many things It was what we needed what we used and that was a much harder list to narrow down to It was definitely the decision between want and need and we have a very full storage unit now And Just the Shift in the fact that We drive a lot more than either of us would have thought. Yeah. 80 percent of our day is spent on the road, moving around. If you're not working, you're driving normally. going somewhere to relax. Going to swap cars. Going everywhere. To meet each other. Anywhere. Um, trying to settle down for the night. You're not really in one spot for more than a day. It is. Unless you're, going camping. it's definitely a nomadic lifestyle in the sense that we all day, every day, are on the move. It is a little stressful sometimes not having a home base. But I think the positives outweigh the negatives. I'd say it's not necessarily. A fixed location home base. Our home base is the van. It's just not a fixed location. I mean a fixed location, like something that you don't have to think about where you're going to be for that night. right now we've found a few solid spots to kind of cycle through where we don't bother people, people don't bother us. We're on a rotation. Yes. A rotation. A rotation. getting a system down for all of our amenities and chores. We don't have a washing machine, so you have to go to a laundromat. And luckily for myself, I work for the guy who owns the laundromat I'm his handyman, so that works out well. Yeah, it was so interesting. He just ended up like making friends with him and then now he works for him with him. I'm a contractor, not his employee. Okay. So now he were, now you work with him, with him, him and his son, which is really cool. Cause then we get the, get, we get the VIP treatment in the laundry mat. Yeah, it's a cool spot. he's a really cool guy. It's been a fun time working with him and everything. Good people, good people. And then we also had to keep track of our water You need to get water. It's for the shower, it's for the sink, it's for dishes. If more than a couple of dishes sits in the sink for more than a day, it starts to stink. You can't have chores waiting around. They have to be done. You don't have space for it, which turned out to be really like ADHD friendly for us, but it was still a struggle of getting in the habit. Some of us are still getting in the habit of some chores, but that is fine. All of us struggle. Some of us. Yeah, both of us. Fair, fair. I definitely agree, like, you have chores and you are not running away from them because you're only six feet away from anything at all times. Yeah. Everything is on display, which is nice for an ADHD brain though. Because for me, it's like, if I can't see it, I will forget. But definitely these chores And you will choose to put it somewhere you don't see it so you can forget it. That is also true. Moving on. there's definitely other initial challenges we had which included finding a van that fit our needs and budget. We spent a year researching and browsing different options. eventually we were able to settle down. We found one that seemed to fit pretty well. The first one we saw had some mild issues then they remembered they had a second one. that one ended up actually being the winner. The second vehicle we looked at. Winner winner chicken dinner. Um, but finding it in the budget, we did get one that was already built out. we just didn't have the time or budget to build one. We were trying to get it on the road immediately. We found one that was pre built. We're finding ways we want to change it and move things, fix it more to our lifestyle. It was originally outfitted and owned by Cabana, which was a company based out of Seattle. they were like a hotel on wheels during the pandemic. It was experience the van life without living van life really cool concept. Really cool concept, but not enough people agreed with that. And they went belly up shortly after the pandemic ended. Um, so their loss was our gain in that aspect. we got this really cool ass van and it's all set up with the inverters. It's got the solar system, it's got Max Air fan. It has a whole ass bathroom. Like this thing is really cool. It's got a kitchen in the back which is gonna be changed because we have so many electronic cooking devices and the tropical grill. Now we're gonna end up turning that into more of a better utilized storage space. it'll. be converted and we'll probably end up updating photos of that later on. Yeah, definitely room to grow, which I'm so excited about. What do we do with the animals? That is a fun one. we're fortunate enough that this one came outfitted with, a max airflow fan, so it does a really good job of keeping the van cooler during these hot days we kind of have to make sure we're taking cycles. The animals aren't left alone for more than four hours at a time. Just making sure they're fed in the morning, fed in the evening, because this thing has like woven wool walls, so if the cat doesn't get what he wants, he tries to scratch the walls, even though I built him a little scratching post. You little asshole. Um, but that's like one of the things we're thinking about for changing the van is switching the paneling system. getting rid of these wool walls and doing, thin wood paneling or something. Maybe some metal sheets so we can hang stuff with magnets. I think that would be a great idea. So again, we had to go into the shift of our flow of life. It wasn't as sedentary as it was before. now we're constantly moving. We've had a break for the past few days. We're driveway watching for my parents neighbors right now. Mm hmm. Driveway watching. We're driveway watching. We're security guards. 24 7 coverage. Yes. At the moment. Oh my gosh, we should advertise ourselves like that. There are jobs called gatekeepers. Mm hmm. And you just sit at the gate. We should look at that. and also living as minimal as possible. We don't have nearly as many belongings as we used to or anything like that. And the belongings we do have have shrunk. so you do end up with less convenience. We only grocery shop for a couple days at a time. Mm hmm. There's no real bulk budget shopping or anything like that. You have to be a lot more cost effective and we go to so many different stores to get the best prices for different things. And I've recently shifted to more of the carnivore diet has been benefits for me. we have to find places for cheap meat to be able to continue on with eating Definitely, I've liked the carnivore diet, actually. I'm not full in as much as you are, but, Because you're changing your diet, and you cook, it's effectively changing my diet, it's actually been a good time, and I've been able to drink milk again. I can have a milkshake and not feel like shit, so that's really cool. Next we'll move on to learning the ropes. Yeah, another big challenge was learning how to live in such a small space. We had to figure out how to organize everything and make sure we weren't stepping on each other's toes for sure. And there was also the learning curve with things like how to manage our water supply, our electricity, and staying connected on the road. We're actually looking for another Wi Fi source here. We just switched and now we don't have any Wi Fi at the moment, but we're figuring it out. the fun one for electricity is always making sure the batteries have enough juice. and with cooking, like I mentioned those electronic devices earlier, if you don't have the van on, it drains the battery in about 5 10 minutes and everything shuts off. So you have to stay on top of turning van on making sure it's on while you cook turn it off when you're done So you don't waste the gas because that can get pricey as well And our water supply we had to find a spot to get a good hookup so we can get cheap water Because a lot of places for some reason charge crazy for it amazingly, though Some ladies have crush Some old ladies have a crush on Tristan here. No, that's not what's going on. I think Well, cause we get free water. We never have to pay for our water to fill up because those ladies like you so much. The little old custodian thought it was ridiculous that I was getting charged ten bucks for water. So she said just to give it to me free from now on. Yeah, I love that. It's cause you're so handsome. You got those pretty blue eyes. No. You Let's not forget about the first few nights, though it took some time for me to get used to sleeping in the van and dealing with the noises of different environments. You're not in an apartment where you're just hearing weird pipes. It's totally different. Like you have cars driving by, depending on where we park. You have people walking by having conversations and that's kind of weird for me and we're not. Closed up as much as an apartment is. No, we're definitely not. And, oddly enough, I don't know why, but when people see a vehicle that they think someone might be in, they do their damnedest to look in the windows. Just walk away. Don't pry and peep in. If there is someone living there, you're invading their space. They're parked on a public road. Leave them alone. Simple as that. You don't need the answer. An assumption is totally fine. Continue on with the rest of your day. It's for real. So many people stare at us and our van is inconspicuous. we'll have a very stealth and full sized RV trailer parked three cars down and no one bats an eye. Mm-Hmm, but we have a Ford Transit. I think it's more the curiosity that gets people. It's just like, that looks like it could maybe be, but I don't know if it is. Then don't look in the window. Fair, Curiosity killed the cat. this is a good segue into, I left the water pump on, can you please turn it off? That's another thing, remembering to turn off amenities so we don't damage them. We have little switches and buttons for everything to turn on and off. And the water pump is something that will break really easily if it's left on. For long periods of time without any water going through. Because they build pressure in the lines and we could end up with a leak or a burst somewhere. Yes. Hidden in the walls of a van that I'm still learning on how things come apart. Yeah, so that is definitely something we have to keep in mind and I'm still working on for sure. Over six months of living in it and she still does not know how to turn the water pump off. I'm working on it. You left it on your entire work shift the other day. Maybe we should make that button like yellow. It glows when it's on. It's obviously on when it's on. Changing the color I don't think will do shit for ya. I don't know why I don't look at it. It's literally right in front of the sink. Like, if you're standing in front of the sink. It's bright red on a black background. Yeah, if you're standing in front of the sink, you can't not see it. You just don't look at it. I think I just get so distracted in what I'm thinking about. Another thing to learn was the toilet system. It's a cassette style system, so it took some YouTube videos and looking up on how it functions, how it works, how to empty it. That was a new one. Yeah, oh my gosh, we definitely Don't, don't say we. You don't deal with the toilet. Okay, you're right. You don't touch the toilet. you take it out and take care of all the toilet things. we both learned the capacity of that toilet really fast. Yes. But luckily, we have found a lot of legal places for dumping of said toilet. Yeah, so that's really nice. You're way more comfortable in have gotten into the rhythm of things like it's not feeling like a huge task like before I think We were spending a whole day thinking about it and now it's just like okay It's this thing I need to do real quick. Cause it was still like a little odd. you can go to like public porta potties and because it's not that much waste you're allowed to at first getting over the fact that you're, Rolling a shit suitcase over to a public port a potty. You get looked sometimes and you just have to learn to ignore them because you're not doing anything wrong. you're taking care of your septic system essentially. if there's none of those available there are RV dump sites at rest stops that we can go to and dump at as well. Yeah, so it's nice to have plenty of options to get rid of it. Leading into that, Lysol is essential. Learn that quick. Lysol in a vacuum, essential. Can't live without it. We have two fur babies, there's fur everywhere all the time. We took a leaf blower to it a couple days ago and the fur is all back. Yeah, it doesn't look like we did shit. It's a little depressing But, I love them so much, so we're keeping them anyways, even though I have to vacuum up all the fur twice a day because we have a Maine Coon mix and a Chihuahua who both shed so much. And I mean me and Tristan shed too, so it's like so much fur. And hair. We basically just accepted at some point. We inhale fur Maybe while we're sleeping, maybe while we're eating. I don't know. We're gonna be getting an air purifier of some sort to just filter as much fur out of the air as we can. Because I'm pretty certain it's a 5 to 1 fur to oxygen ratio. 5 to 1 fur to oxygen, you're so dramatic. The excitement of the beginning! What a segue. Despite the challenges, we faced, the excitement of starting the journey was incredible. I remember our first night on the road, we went to see Haystack Rock, which I don't think you had seen before. so we went to Haystack Rock down at Cannon Beach, in Oregon. that was a really fun trip. The drive there was definitely trial by fire for us and understanding this van. we got hit with rain and snow and both were coming down heavy enough you couldn't see more than 15 feet in front of you. luckily we were the only vehicle on the road, so we kept it slow and just drove in a straight line. you got freaked out.'cause we saw an owl. What she didn't see was that same death omen owl got hit by a car. So it was its own omen. Yeah. white owls in Mexican culture are considered omens of death. if you see a white owl flying in front of you or your car, it's. Saying that somebody you know is going to die or something's going to die that's really scary and I just grew up with that superstition it was instilled in me, and I still will see Absolutely annihilated. I saw it was fun. I would have felt better if you told me that part because I would really The omen was basically erased Yeast Oh, it was erased up, more, more, shmeared. But, it was gone. It was not an omen anymore. Poor baby. I still love owls, but they're bad omens We made it there, no problem, just found a parking lot that was 24 hour and posted up for the night. by the time we woke up, everything had cleared away, the snow was already mostly melted. we got to, get some coffee, see the Haystack Rock itself, walk on the beach for a little bit, We kind of just walked around town for a little bit and started driving back. It was just a quick little, Valentine's Day trip That was a really fun trip. The sense of adventure was so exhilarating being in a completely new place than where we grew up. It was really testing if we could do this thing. It was just so much fun. I think we both got, so riled up after that. We were like, yes, we can do it. Let's do this thing. Let's go. It's so fun. Every day was a new experience, a new place to explore, and new people to meet. And you definitely meet some fun, interesting people along the way. And definitely some you run away from. quickly without looking back. But seeing the world from the van window was really a dream come true. The landscapes, the sunsets, and the feeling of moving forward, were all worth it for all the sacrifices we made for the transition. and I think now we don't necessarily see them as a sacrifice but more of a change. I think at the time we saw it as things we were sacrificing for our new lifestyle. Mhm. But now it's just our new Lifestyle. We just changed. That was it. No sacrifice. And we ended up with this, undeniable feeling of freedom. you could exist, be loud, do what you wanted and You wouldn't have neighbors filing complaints. You wouldn't have people knocking on your door. People kind of just leave you alone for the most part. Yeah, it's so nice not having neighbors. we were also allowed increased time to spend in the outdoors. We've done a lot of different camping trips in our time since we started. And it's so nice because everything is already packed up all nicely in the car for us. Like, we're like, It is fun to see the difference when we go camping. We'll bring friends or family with us and To them they're running around there. Oh, I don't have the things I need. I don't have the things I want They feel very compacted and limited. But when we go camping that's our time to spread out and we have more space than we normally do we're living life Yeah. Being in the forest is so nice because you can get a dispersed camping spot and spread all the way out. We leave the doors open, the windows open. The animals can get out and walk around freely. Cause like we're not doing that on the daily. We're not trying to be crack heads, like taking up the corner, you know, we're very respectful, but just camping out in the forest is so nice. It's like having that big piece of land to just like stretch out. And just finding new. Places to see. I know one of your favorite things is finding new dog parks. I love finding new dog parks. Katelyn, not so much. She doesn't always like finding new dog parks because They're new smells and new dogs. And they're very stressful for her. Yeah, she gets a little nervous. But we're working on it. She's come a long way. I actually adopted her from a pound. before, she did not want to see any dogs at all. And now, she's six years old. we can go to the dog parks. We can walk by people and she doesn't bark. it's really cool how much she's come through she goes on hikes with us and sees other dogs pass by they'll be Barking at her and she's like What are you looking at? as well you get a vibe from when you meet people when we can tell that They're not weirdos if they ask, is that your van? Is that your cat? Because normally Adonis is up in the dash. It's fun to talk to him about what we're doing, why we do it. normally we've been greeted with a lot of excitement and interest, not a lot of aggression or distaste towards it. Yeah. I wonder if that has anything to do with where we live and if that will change. Oh, it probably will. I have a feeling when we make it to some midwest or southern states, there'll be a little bit less hospitality to this lifestyle Yeah, it's definitely a different one, but not too uncommon here well, that's also because normally it's Angry little crackheads. So yeah, that's fair and we live in a more urban lifestyle. Yeah It's like a studio apartments worth of stuff less even less worth of stuff You can fit all of our belongings in a closet. You know what this looks about the size of a custodian's closet for those who don't know It's a 2019 Ford transit. 2019 Ford transit high top 250. It has the extended top so I can actually stand in it and fit. Cause you're six foot. It's nice to be able to stand and not be a hunchback. the only spot that's hard to fit is the bed because it is exactly six feet. So I kind of sleep diagonal But not the end of the world. Not the end of the world, but also an adjustment at one point, we had two queen sized mattresses just for shits and giggles. It was fun. We had a super king sized mattress down to a full three quarters of our bedroom at one point were mattress. Over 50% of our room was just mattress. We had like two feet on either side and like four feet at the foot of it. it was a good sized room. It was bigger than the second bedroom. the master bedroom of the apartment. Working for myself has definitely been a blessing, so far. Stressful, but definitely a blessing. It has had more benefits than downfalls. Definitely stressful, though. she was able to find some fancy 3d printed window vents that were meant to fit in our windows. retrofitted for, This exact window dimension. Yeah, Etsy's awesome for custom shit. So it was great to be able to get those It made a drastic change for keeping bugs out keeping the cat in And they still get a lot of fresh air. it's the equivalent to having the window open six inches with strong max airflow going And either when it's cool out, you can turn it, blow the air in, so it's blowing cold air into the van. Or if it's warmer, you can suck all the hot air out and get a breeze it keeps nice fresh air and stays way cooler in the van. Definitely, it stays like 70 degrees or less at all times. Yeah, and I've been able to hang out without the van running for AC. I just chill in the bed, do some studying or reading or something. and then when it's time for a walk, I go for a walk, I'm able to hang out comfortably Without feeling overheated in the van on days where it's 90 something outside You'd think the van would be miserable. It's noticeably cooler a good 20 degrees these walls are like woven wool. so They're great. Except for the fact that even though I've built him an awesome rope wrapped scratch post, our cat still goes for the walls, it'll wake you up in the middle of the night because you forgot to leave the litter box open He'll start scratching your wall, and it wakes you up Immediately It wakes you up immediately for some reason like doesn't bother me Echoes in here it is as loud as someone rapping on the window He's not that strong When he's a big muscle right here. He goes up against this glass It echoes. I think you can just hear things a lot better than I can. Or maybe are sensitive to the sounds. Every single time he starts, You're like, ah! You know, you're on top of him. He'll be scratching for three minutes before you're like, Knock it off! It's the same sound every time. You've heard cats scratch furniture. It sounds like that, but five times louder. it's only five feet away on tight knit wool attached to metal walls. It's not quiet. You hear it well. You're just not tuned in to his noises, like I am. That's fair. I'm tuned in to Kayla's noises. Our dog, our six year old Chihuahua, who we also have in the van. Me and her got a system down like she'll whine a certain way. I'll be like, oh, yep. You're hungry. Oh Yep, I forgot to take you on a walk. Let's go. We communicate pretty well. She's gonna fry her little bean cells so she goes in the crate where she's gonna be safe she's gonna be protected there's not gonna be too much stimuli that she's freaking out and barking at everything if we lived in the apartment, you put your crate, your Dog in the crate for a couple hours to make sure they're staying out of the things. we sacrificed one of our cabinets two shells That's sacrifice. They need it We converted them they were like Suitcase storage because this was like a hotel on wheels. So you're only expected to have a week's worth of clothes I Actually built more shelves. So we had more clothing storage. We've made our own personalizations for sure. Except for some of them where we have, our shoes, that one is actually pretty strong. But we have a drawer above that that holds a bunch of odds and ends. and we had to install a little, bolt on that so it'll stay shut. when you hit the brakes, it'll fly open. And could whack a cat or a dog, so we'd prefer not to do that. Oh yeah, we've definitely added lots of, locks. latches, securities, hooks. wall storage is crucial. not too much in the open areas because I won't fit. she keeps trying to get 3D art, that sticks off the wall like six inches, and we don't have six inches to spare for me to walk around and not rip art off the wall every day. This is why we have tucked away art walls where we have a sticker collection. I have a couple pieces like prints and an original of like one of my favorite local artists. We put little Metal, decal signs up, and one of her good friends, designed most of it, but he still needs to paint a lot of our walls. Yeah, a little mural action, including Tangled, from Disney. Calvin and Hobbes theming, some fish, a little crow skull, just all odds and ends, Some wild stuff, I also had my, amazing tattoo artist.
