Speaker 1:

Welcome to another episode of my health show podcast. I'm Maureen McGrath, registered nurse, nurse, continence advisor, sexual health educator. It's always my honor to be with you and to be able to deliver good healthcare information based on the evidence. This is something as a nurse continence advisor that I do day in and day out, something that I talk about with patients. I also find I talk about it at social events as well, because I might run into a colleague. They might want to refer a patient to see me.

Speaker 1:

I was talking about this last night. We had a little paddleboarding race at the local club in the neighborhood and anyway, the subject of stressed urinary incontinence came up. It's a subject that so many women experience, especially at midlife or after the birth of a baby or during perimenopause menopause. Stressed urinary incontinence occurs when your bladder leaks urine. During physical activity or exertion you get that increased intra-abdominal pressure, and when you cough or sneeze or lift something heavy or exercise, change positions you might leak. One in three women experience symptoms of stress urinary incontinence at some point in their lives, making it the most common type of female urinary incontinence, and it can really get downright depressing. It can prevent people from exercising, it can impact their intimate lives and you know, it's just a total drag.

Speaker 1:

Joining me on the line is a woman who is set to change all of this for women with her revolutionary new product, the Moxie Patch. Remy Warren is the creator of Moxie Patch and joins me on the line. Good evening, Remy. How are you Good? Good evening Warrenemy, how are you Good? Good evening Maureen. How are you doing? I'm doing very well, Thank you. I'm fortunate to say I'm not leaking urine, but I certainly have in the past, and so it's so important that women get treatment for this. It takes a woman an average of seven years to see a doctor about her urinary incontinence, and at that she makes the decision after about seven years, and then she might have to wait a year to get in to see a specialist about this. But you're setting out to change this. I love this and I love this product, and some of my patients have used it already. But first and foremost, can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your background?

Speaker 2:

Sure sure. Thank you, marie. So, as Marie mentioned, I'm Remy Warren, the creator of Moxie Patch. I'm a mom of two little boys who are currently 9 and 12 years old. I live in Kitchener, ontario in Canada, which is an hour west of Toronto. My background is actually in business, which is what I went to school for at the University of Western Ontario, but, yes, not in the life sciences like many people might think, and prior to Moxie Patch, I was actually in the consumer packaged goods industry.

Speaker 1:

So, yes, so definitely, oh you have a great background for business, which is you know what it takes here, and also health care. Oh, thank you very much. I appreciate it. You are so welcome. So I mean this product is set to change the lives for so many women. How did you come up with the idea for the Moxie patch?

Speaker 2:

Yes, yeah, well, after I had children myself, I was experiencing bladder leaks and I found that, you know, I couldn't even do simple things like run around the block or do jumping jacks in an exercise class without experiencing frustrating leaks, and so, you know, it definitely took a few years. I thought, well, maybe this problem will go away on its own, and sometimes it felt like it got better and sometimes it was worse, and eventually I started looking, looking into options for myself. I visited my family doctor and then I was referred to a specialist and, as you mentioned, it did take about 18 months to get that referral appointment initially, and then I was recommended for, you know, urodynamic testing and pelvic floor therapy.

Speaker 2:

I feel like I've tried almost every single product that's over the counter on the market, available in both Canada and the US. Really, the market available in both Canada and the US really and you know, was not able to find an effective solution that actually prevented leaks and not just absorb them, like a lot of the disposable pads and other products on the market. And so I kind of I set out to to kind of solve this, because I found that there was a gap, not only in the market but just for solutions for women in general, you know. So I wanted something that was available over the counter, that could prevent leaks, not just absorb them, but that was also reusable and eco friendly, and I thought, you know, there has to be something like this on the market, and I just I really wasn't able to find anything.

Speaker 1:

And it's amazing. You know, stress, urinary incontinence, I want to say typically women may cough or sneeze or exercise and they have small amounts of leakage, it's not sort of that overwhelming loss. Diagnosis is key and you know, as you said, you set out, and oftentimes women don't get the correct diagnosis. The other thing is doctors often prescribe Kegels, kegel exercises. I've had more women in my clinical practice present to me and say you know, I've Kegel till the cows came home and it didn't help at all. And you know, and whether they're doing them correctly or not, there's like this whole idea that oh, let's blame the woman and say you're not doing them correctly.

Speaker 1:

They're pretty simple to do. Squeeze your rectal muscle, the muscle will prevent you from passing gas. Squeeze two, three, hold two, three, release two, three. There I just did one, but oftentimes, more often than not, it doesn't work. And another the jury's out on whether hypopressive exercises work as well. We need a lot more research in that area. So you know this is such a tough area and you know one of the other options for treating it is a procedure which is, you know, takes women out of their homes and out of their jobs and away from their lives, and you know the recovery can be two to six weeks. So this is a great non-invasive device and you know, can you just describe what it actually looks like? I know it's hot pink, which I love. Can you just describe what it actually looks like?

Speaker 2:

I know it's hot pink, which I love. Yeah, thank you.

Speaker 1:

We actually call it Moxie Magenta. Oh, I love it. Love it, it's beautiful.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that was a color that we had to have created, and so we decided to name our own color as well. But so, yeah, thank you for that. Moxie patch is made of a silicone base. Thank you for that. Moxie patch is a. It's a made of a silicone base, and then it works along with the hydrogel patches that are included in the device, and so the way that Moxie patch works is that it's designed to occlude or cover the urethral opening, so where urine exits the body, preventing unintentional bladder leaks, specifically due to mild to moderate stress incontinence.

Speaker 1:

And so it's a small device, probably no bigger than the size of a loonie. Would you say yes, I'd say it's actually even smaller than that Smaller yeah.

Speaker 2:

Yes, maybe more of a nickel size. I'll have to go and compare that.

Speaker 1:

Right, yeah, no, you're right, it is about a nickel size. That's absolutely correct. It's incredible. I don't leak urine anymore when I cough, sneeze or exercise. I have my life back. Hi, it's Maureen McGrath, registered nurse and nurse continence advisor, and that's typically what my patients say after discovering the Moxie patch, a revolutionary new device to treat stress urinary incontinence. Many of my patients are frustrated with bladder leaks and have tried everything from pads to Kegel exercises before finding Moxie patch. Moxie patch is a small external device that is ultra discreet, effective, reusable and eco-friendly. It helps you to live life to the fullest, free from the worries and limitations of bladder leaks from stress urinary incontinence. Speaker 2:

Yes, yeah, there was quite a few. I mean, I would say, the biggest one being probably supply chain. You know, once we decided we had done all the prototypes, done all the user studies, you know, decided that we wanted to come out with this product. We had the design that we wanted to move forward with, with all the feedback from the urogynecologists and the medical designers, you know. And once we had finally placed our first order for production, there was problems in the manufacturing facilities and some pandemic related and some not. But really, you know, I had hoped to launch this product two to three years prior to when we actually were able to launch the product, which was this past November. So I would say supply chain is definitely one of the biggest ones.

Speaker 2:

Another one was, I would say, in terms of, you know, challenges.

Speaker 2:

You know, I really, as a Canadian entrepreneur, I was really excited about the idea of being able to be able to sell my own product in Canada, be able to eventually see it on store shelves, say, of Shoppers, drug Mart or, you know, london Drugs, things like that. But unfortunately, in Canada, the auditing program that's required for medical devices was just so expensive for a smaller startup company like myself. And so, even though I know we would easily pass the Health Canada approvals if the auditing that's required from a regulatory standpoint, that was something that I just wasn't able to afford. So I'm still very hopeful that we'll be able to launch our product in Canada over the in the next year or two, but that was something you know in the early stages. Yeah, being a Canadian entrepreneur, it would have been really nice to be able to launch your product in your own home country, because I know there's so many Canadian women that have expressed interest and are looking to purchase the Moxie patch and we're just not able to do that quite yet.

Speaker 1:

Right, which is too bad, because this isn't just a story about a solution for stress urinary incontinence. It's about a woman, you know, creating a business, finding independence. You know, financial freedom, you know, and all the while helping so many women. One in three women experience stress, urinary incontinence. Now I know you described kind of you know, the moxie patch, magenta, and that it's made of silicon. How does it actually work? And you mentioned the hydrogel patch as well. So how does this work? For example, a woman who's like run jogging but she leaks when she jogs. You know what? How would that work for her?

Speaker 2:

Yes, so a woman, when she does experience episodes of bladder leakage, she can take the reusable Moxie patch device.

Speaker 2:

The hydrogel pieces come individually wrapped, so she would open one of the hydrogel patches, apply it to the base of the Moxie patch device and then she can apply it directly over top of the urethral opening. And so a lot of women, which you know, it's a big educational side to this product as well, because a lot of women truly don't really know their bodies well enough to even know where their urethra is. Or, you know, some women don't realize that urine does come out of the urethra and not the vagina. So it does take a little bit of education in terms of that around for the product as well. But women can apply it over their urethra opening, ensure that there's a proper seal, and then she can wear it for up to four hours. And the reason that it's recommended for four hours is because it does have to be removed to intentionally urinate, which is what we feel like makes the Moxie patch so effective, and then it has to be replaced after each use.

Speaker 1:

So that's yeah, that sounds awesome, like a fabulous product and really would give women a lot of freedom. I just want to mention that it's available in the US only at this point, but I know that it's going to be so popular you're going to be able to get it approved in Canada as well. And where can people? Where is the device currently available for purchase? How can people get one? How can women get one of these?

Speaker 2:

Yes, yes. So currently we have our own website, which is moxiepatchcom, which has a lot of the different resources and how-tos and explainer videos. It's a really great resource for additional information about it. We also sell on amazoncom and soon we'll be selling on walmartcom as well.

Speaker 1:

Oh, that's awesome. Congratulations, that's great. And what are the women saying about it?

Speaker 2:

Yes, yeah. So you know it's funny I've received so many different reviews on Moxie Passion. We take all of our reviews so seriously, you know, and it's been been really great there has been in terms of on Amazon, we opted to sign up for the Vine review program, which I'm not sure if everybody is familiar with, but it's a program that new sellers can sign up for any new products on the market you can offer to offer your product for free and 30 people that Amazon chooses as their trusted reviewers will review your product, which we thought was. You know, it sounded like a great idea initially to gain those initial product reviews that that we were hoping. Unfortunately, it appears that some women because this product is specifically for women and specifically for women with mild to moderate stress incontinence, as opposed to say, more severe forms of urinary incontinence or urge incontinence the product was sent to people who don't necessarily even have this problem, unfortunately.

Speaker 2:

And so the reviews were a little bit mixed and critical and sometimes didn't even have anything to do with the product, and so that was an unfortunate hiccup in the early stages that we faced. But now that the product reviews are coming in from actual users of the product, they do tend to be a lot more positive and helpful to other consumers who are looking to purchase a product like Moxie Catch.

Speaker 1:

Wow, you know, as I said earlier, diagnosis is key, especially with urinary incontinence, because there's, you know, a number of different types. You mentioned urge and overactive bladder, functional incontinence, mixed incontinence, neurogenic bladder. You know so that diagnosis is critical and you know you don't think of it in terms of Amazon reviews, but you make a great point. What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs, especially women, who are looking to create innovative health solutions?

Speaker 2:

Yes, yeah. So I would definitely say to anyone who's looking to you know who has an idea or sees a gap in the market, but chances are there are other women that see a gap in the market too, or because, or consumers that are looking for solutions to to the problem they might be solving. But I think one of the key things that's been instrumental and you know me in keeping things moving forward and having that motivation and being able to have all the help and resources that I need was connecting with the local innovation centers In Ontario. Here they're called regional innovation centers.

Speaker 2:

In the US I've heard they're called something differently and the term has slipped my mind right now, but it's very similar. But these centers, they're designed to help entrepreneurs, especially in the early stages of business. To you know, they help with anything from patents to understanding sales and marketing, to connecting you with different fundraising opportunities, whether that's through investors or grants and things like that. Here that I work with is called Innovation Factory and they've been so instrumental in helping me and guide me through the entrepreneurial journey. So that would be my number one recommendation to anyone starting out is to connect with these regional innovation centers because it will save you a lot of time, money and likely research as well.

Speaker 1:

And that is fantastic advice. Is there anything else you'd like the listeners to know about your journey or the product in particular, moxie Patch?

Speaker 2:

Yes, yeah, you know, I think. In terms of Moxie Patch, I think I love to hear that women are just starting now to talk more about their bladder leaks and stress, incontinence with other people, Because, you know, I realized in this journey, not just in creating a product, but we're also, you know, building an audience of women who are, you know, experiencing these issues as well, and I think that the more that women talk about this and open up about it, then the more they are likely to find solutions that work for them, whether that's Moxie patch or not. You know, I think it's important that women are talking about this product and product, but talking about talking about this problem in order to find effective solutions, because not not the same solution is going to work, with work for every woman. You know, sometimes pelvic floor therapy is a great option for women and sometimes, sometimes it's surgery and sometimes it's moxie patch. So, yeah, we believe that it's important for women and sometimes, sometimes it's surgery and sometimes it's.

Speaker 1:

Moxie patch. So, yeah, we believe that it's important for women to find the right solution for them, absolutely. That's that's so great, you know. And as long as there are different choices for women, I feel that they can make an informed decision about the healthcare that they need, and I think Moxie patch is a fantastic addition to the armamentarium of available treatments for stress, urinary incontinence. And, once again, where can our listeners find more information or purchase your Moxie patch?

Speaker 2:

Yes, yes, more information is available at moxiepatchcom, and you can also find us on Amazon and soon Walmart in the US as well.

Speaker 1:

Thank you so much, remy. I really appreciate you coming on the program sharing your inspiring story about Moxie Patch helping the millions of women.
