Maude Burger-Smith

In this episode of Work Family Me, I speak with Tanja McCandie. She is a Canadian national living, working, and parenting in Japan. She works as an associate professor, advocates for gender and teacher development, and handles homework, laundry, and baseball games while her husband works abroad.

Listen to hear two “difficult women” discuss:

  • Feminism, equality, parenting in an outdated system and framework
  • A behind the scenes of cultures meeting within a marriage and parenting
  • The permission from self and culture at large that women often don’t get when returning to work after maternity leave
  • Invisible challenges in the way of visibility, promotions and networking
  • The shifts that are happening as more women have access to choices and financial wellbeing
  • Being lonely vs alone as a wife and a parent
