The Sub Stuff Ep 4 | This Week in Sub-Ultra ! Go Pro Games Results Breakdown, Sinks Canyon Trail Races & Skyrace Maderia !!

Speaker 1:

What's up, fam? Welcome back to the Steep Stuff Podcast. This episode is the fourth iteration of the Sub Stuff this week in Sub Ultra Guys, I am so excited to bring this to you. It's been a pretty busy week over the last few weeks. We've got a lot going on, yeah, so let's dive in.

Speaker 1:

So this past week a lot of you guys might be familiar especially those of you in the Mountain West, with the GoPro games. We put on the GoPro games. There was a 5K, a 10K, a 20K and then Pepe's face-off Guys, what a fun racing series. I was a little bummed to miss this one. I was hoping to get there. So many friends of the podcast and just so many incredible athletes were out there showing their stuff and kind of getting into it. Pretty amazing, incredible athletes were out there showing their stuff and kind of getting into it. So pretty amazing. Nice little dust off for the beginning of the season prior to Broken Arrow and some of the more crazy competitive races out there. It was kind of the first one of the bigger competitive races of the season on the sub ultra scene. Starting out on Friday we had the 5k. So this past June, the 7th, at 5.30pm the GoPro games. 5k took place. Um, you know what GoPro games I got to say your, your, your results were a little screwed up cause everything's by class, so I just want to give a few little shout outs.

Speaker 1:

They didn't really publish an official podium and stuff like that, but I do want to give a few shout outs. Um, first one to being Cade Michael from the trail team. This kid is on fire. Um, watch out for him. 5k and 1638, um on um on Friday as well. He's um, uh from superior Colorado, just 25 years old. Again, want to shout out, him from the trail team. Um, him, him and Tyler McCandless kind of duked it out, tyler McCandless finishing in 1638. Um. So I want to give a shout out to them as well. Um, just kind of duking it out and and um kind of a barn burner race, um.

Speaker 1:

Also want to give a shout out on the female side to Mackenzie Sargent, 14 year old, from Boulder, colorado. Um winning the race, uh for the females in 2349. Um. And also want to give a shout out to Tatum Mazey, um from Monument, colorado, friend of the podcast, finishing, I believe, in fourth or fifth overall. I know she took second in her age group Again GoPro Games with these freaking results. Guys, can you just give me like one through 50 or whoever like in place? I don't understand what's going on with these results. But anyway, shout out to Tatum in 2432, fourth or fifth place overall, not really sure, but definitely second in her age group. She's a killer. So shout out to her big friend of the podcast.

Speaker 1:

Moving on to the 10k, we've got some clear results here. So, guys, the 10k course. They altered it a little bit this year, so it was only 5.64 miles with about 1452 feet of climbing. This, just like the 20 K, took place on Sunday. Six, nine, so this past Sunday. Um, want to give a shout out to the goat.

Speaker 1:

The greatest of all time returns. Mr Joseph gray comes back and wins for the ninth time in 3608. So big shout out to Joe. Um, yeah, just uh, the greatest of all time. Pretty exciting to see him come back and win this again for the ninth time. So let's see if we can get 10 next year. This guy's on a I can't even say he's on a roll. He's more of the most dominant trail runner of all time, but it's for another conversation.

Speaker 1:

And second place, tyler McCandless. Um, pretty stout, right behind Joe and 3630. And then Michael Bowden, rosie, oh, um, formerly of the trail team, now on the Brooks team. Then Michael Bowden-Rosio, formerly of the Trail Team, now on the Brooks team, shout out to him. In 36-41, taking third place, cam Smith returns from injury back to proper form. In a fourth place, stout 37-03. And in fifth was Mr Andy Wacker of Team Solomon in 37-04. Shout out to Andy Just studs, straight studs.

Speaker 1:

Also want to give a shout out to some friends of the podcast Mr Kieran, nay, coming back and taking seventh place, uh, and what a stacked field, um. As well as to Mr Jacob Scraba and 14th. And shout out to mix. Mr Nick Tusa as well, um, with some dominant results. So these guys, uh, really threw down in the 10 K. What a fun race. I will be there next year On the female side, guys. Friend of the podcast, in fact, her episode just dropped, episode 14.

Speaker 1:

Miss Anna Mae Flynn, another one of the greatest trail runners of all time, took first place in 44.16. Pretty exciting, really nice to see her return back to form. We want to wish her luck as well, as she's got the broken arrow VK coming up in just another week. And second place was Ashley Brasovian of Team Hoka in 44-24. And third place was Lara Hamilton in 44-50. So just got really really stout times. Four 50. Um, so just got really really stout times. I mean, look at that just uh, you know, 45 seconds or less than 40, 45 seconds between first and third place there, between anime, ashley and Lara. Um, in fourth place was Bella Williams in 45, 51. And in fifth place was Kayla Christopher Moody in 46, 19.

Speaker 1:

Um, like I said, this race was an absolute barn burner. Congrats to everyone who turned out and threw down. Um, you know some big shout outs there to the friends and friends of the podcast. And again, congratulations, uh to joe and anime for getting it done. Um, joe, for just so much dominance in the sport, and anime as well, just incredible. So shout out to both of them.

Speaker 1:

Uh, in other news, we had the 20 K. So for those of you guys who are unaware, the 20 K took place on Sunday as well, on six nine. Um, the 20 K itself was actually a little bit less than 20 K was two loops of the 10 K course. So one 10 K course was 5.64 miles with 1400 feet of gain. Multiply that times. Two course was 5.64 miles with 1400 feet of gain. Multiply that times two, you get yourself about 11.28 miles with 2,900 feet of climbing.

Speaker 1:

We can start out with the male side with Mr Eli Hemming. Shout out to my coach. Taking first place in a very dominant fashion of one hour 13 minutes and 48 seconds. Is slaughtering the field. Good for him. Eli seems to be in proper form right now and uh is looking pretty good for uh. In the next few weeks he's going to be at the broken arrow, vk and 23 K. So when I just give him the biggest shout out, um and yeah, pretty exciting, uh.

Speaker 1:

And second place was two time Pikes Peak marathon champion, mr Jonathan Aziz, and one hour 15 minutes and 52 seconds. Uh, another absolute killer. Um, really excited to see him. Um, you know, come out and and throw down and compete. And third place was trail team stud, mr Cade Michael. Um, one hour 16 minutes and 19 seconds. Shout out to Cade. Um, man, this kid's really really starting to turn some heads, so really really good showing for him. Very exciting.

Speaker 1:

So, first place overall in the 5k, third and then 20k not a bad showing. In fourth place was Mr Grant Kool, again as well, in one hour 17 minutes and 16 seconds. In fifth place was Mason copy in one hour 17 minutes and 58 seconds. And in sixth place was Chad Hall in one hour 20 minutes and 48 seconds. Another legend of the game, mr Chad Hall. So shout out to him. Pretty exciting to see him in this, in this mix up in the top 10, pretty wild. Just so many big names, so many storylines here. What a competitive bar and burner of a race. Also want to give a shout out to friend of the podcast, mr Benjamin Townsend, 13th place overall. Just 20 years old, this guy ran himself into one hour 26 minutes 35 seconds. It won't be long before he's winning these races, so pretty exciting.

Speaker 1:

On the female side we had Miss Adrienne Walsh of Steamboat, colorado, in one hour 31 minutes 31 seconds. In second place was Rachel Tomciak of Merrill in one hour 32 minutes and 44 seconds. Shout out to Rachel. In third place was Shea Aquilano, who is a name you might be very familiar with on more of the ultra side. She came out and ran 138.29. So pretty solid 20 K podium there. In fourth place was Natalie clan in one hour 42 minutes 37 seconds. In fifth place was Brittany Dick in one hour 43 minutes and 14 seconds. And in sixth place was Casey Sutherland in a one hour 44 minutes and 54 seconds. So shout out to all the 20 K runners what a fun race they put on Um. So right after the 20 K we have Pepe's face off.

Speaker 1:

Um, this is one of my personal favorite races in the series. Pretty dope. What they do is it takes place at one o'clock on Sunday, so in the hottest part of the day in Vail. Uh, it's toasty, it's very toasty, guys. Um, and what happens is you'll do laps up a Hill it's three or 400 foot um ski Hill and you transition onto single track and then bomb your way down and go back up the Hill. Um, really fun, and this has been. This has done in. I think it's like 30 or 35 minutes is the time allotted, that you have to get X amount of laps. Usually the standard is somewhere between five and six laps between the males and the females. Uh, and that's what we saw um this week.

Speaker 1:

It's pretty exciting to see the lineup. I mean just so many absolute killers on both the male and female side. Um, pretty cool to see um. You know the likes of like Ryan Phoebus return, jackson Cole was out there racing, cam Smith was back, joseph DeMore just run small. Um, and just so many, so many great athletes Mercedes Siegel Gaither as well. Friend of the pod. Um, she was just so many, so many great athletes Mercedes Siegel Gaither as well. Friend of the pod, she was out there throwing down as well. So we can start with the female side.

Speaker 1:

Amelia Shea finished in first place in Pepe's face off for the elite field in five laps in a time of 34, 34. And second place was Carly Rempel five laps in 35, 14. And third place was Annie Duby Um, keep an eye out for that name. Uh, we actually just talked about her in the one of the broken arrow previews as well, I think, believe she. Uh, nick Tusa had her in, uh, in his lineup. Um, I remember that name that she is going to be racing broken arrow and I believe is from Boulder, if I'm not too mistaken, she also ran five laps in 35 minutes 41 seconds. And fourth place was Mariana Ergorov something like that and five laps as well 36.09. Just incredible how many female athletes were in five laps, like the entire top five, as well as Brittany Dick in five laps in 36 minutes and 29 seconds. So shout out to these ladies a way to get it done. Also want to give a big shout out.

Speaker 1:

In seventh place was Mercedes Siegel Gaither. I know she had a little bit of a tougher day than she expected out there, but just a big shout out. Um, you know, excited to see her. She's going to be racing uh, meet the Minotaur in just a few weeks time, so super excited to see what she could do. Out there On the men's side is going to be Mr Cam Smith.

Speaker 1:

As always, one of the best climbers in Colorado, if not one of the best climbers in the world. Schemo athlete as well as stud trail runner comes back. This doesn't look like this guy missed a step at all, just dismantling the field in 31 minutes 16 seconds and six laps Just absolutely incredible. And second place was La Sportiva teammate of mine, mr Joseph DeMore, another Colorado legend, in six laps at 32 minutes, six seconds. And third place was just run small of Adidas Terex, also six laps in 32 minutes 31 seconds. And fourth place was Mr David Kennedy, in six laps, Also 32 minutes 56 seconds, just behind, just run. And in fifth place was a name you guys might be familiar with, mr Tate Knight. Uh, the FKT guy. Um, in six laps as well 33 minutes 42 seconds. So big shout out to the top five on both sides.

Speaker 1:

Pepe's face off is just such a cool race. I mean not that not to take anything away from the 5k, 10k and 20k, it's just that this is one of the more unique races in the state of Colorado if not the Mountain West where you're doing just laps up a ski hill and just just destroying yourself in the heat of the day. Some beta I got actually was it was 10 degrees warmer than last year but 10 degrees cooler than the year before, so kind of in that middle sweet spot, but still it looked like from the pictures everybody was suffering out there and they looked all pretty darn warm. So yeah, pretty exciting. A big shout out to GoPro games and guys, gopro people, get your, get your results together. Oh my gosh, like just give me, give me a list, one through 10. That's all I need, um, anyway.

Speaker 1:

So, moving on from GoPro games, we're going to go over to sinks Canyon. Um want to big give a big shout out to the six Canyon race. I kind of hyped us up the last few weeks, um, you know what, just as much as we're, we're really excited to, uh, to kind of preview some of the bigger name races out there. I also want to give a shout out to some of the grassroots races. I think these races are one of the foundations of our sport. Um, and I think these races need, uh need people to show up and come and support and stuff like that, you know. So local um mountain West guy, gabe Joyce I don't know if you're familiar with him, he runs for Scarpa um very well-known mountain athlete from Lander Wyoming puts this race on um sinks canyon 50k. They've also an 18k took place this past weekend.

Speaker 1:

Um, we had some course records go down on the 50k side. Mr thomas dean ran a course record of four hours 12 minutes 57 seconds, followed by simon kerns in four hours 47 minutes um 14 seconds and followed by third place lucas lutz, five hours 12 minutes 37 seconds. Also want to give a big shout out to the female side. Another course record Kaylee Holyfield ran 15 or, excuse me, five hours 17, 17 minutes five seconds. Minnie Kaufman ran herself in second place at five hours 22 minutes 27 seconds and then Hannah Jokum in five hours 36 minutes 12 seconds. So big shout out to the 50K podium. Pretty exciting. We got two course records going down. That doesn't happen very often, so very exciting.

Speaker 1:

On the 18K, we'll start out with the females. I think we have to give a huge shout out to Miss Rebecca Peterson, um third place overall in the entire 18 K race. It's a pretty, pretty awesome performance. Um one, obviously for the females, in one hour 36 minutes, followed by Liz Marshall in one hour 43 seconds and Brooke Davis in two hours four minutes. On the men's side of the field, mr Diego Lobatos took the dub in one hour 27 minutes, followed by Cody Formier in one hour 35 minutes. Yeah, cody was running, scared man. Rebecca was right on his tail. One minute run when it was that, one minute, just ahead of Rebecca. Pretty solid performance by Rebecca, almost second place overall. And then in third place was Ben Zoller in one hour 39 minutes. So a lot of crushers here. Just an incredible, just incredible showing. Overall, really exciting race. And yeah, shout out to Gabe, shout out to Six Canyon. Definitely a race you guys would want to put on your schedule for next year in early June If you're looking for something fun, a nice little grassroots event in a beautiful area.

Speaker 1:

So news coming up this week. So we've got a little bit of a layoff. I got Mike's calendar screwed up. I really, for some reason, I don't know why, but I thought Broken Arrow was coming out, was going to happen this weekend. I'm a little too much on the uh thinking about Cirque series, cause that's what I'm going to be racing, um, but that is not the case. Broken Arrow starts on the 22nd, so or it's going to be starting the following week, uh, 18th through the 22nd, so, um, this upcoming week we've got the seventh stop in the Merrill Skyrunner World Series.

Speaker 1:

It's going to be the Madeira Sky Race taking place in Madeira, portugal. If you guys are unfamiliar, madeira is a beautiful island off the coast of Portugal. Really amazing race. It's going to be taking place this June, the 15th 2024, saturday. This is actually the second longest race in the entire series. It's going to be 45K and if you guys are unfamiliar with kilometers to miles, that is 27 miles. It's a long race with 3,600 meters of climbing, that's about 11,811. 27 miles it's a long race with 3,600 meters of climbing, that's about 11,811 feet, so it's a big race. Um, it was a long race with lots of vertical. Um should be pretty toasty out there. The highest point of the race is going to be 1,861 meters, so that's about 6,105 feet for you Americans out there.

Speaker 1:

Uh, we can kind of break down little favorites Not a lot of Americans showing up in the American contention, but we do have one American that I do want to highlight. We'll get into that a little bit later. We are going to start with the females. Spanish native Lide Orazazu, of Team Basque Selection, is going to be out there. We're also going to have Canadian Kaylee McChrystal, who's going to be out there as well, followed by French runner Lucille Germain, who runs for Team Cetus Matrix. You might be familiar with her from some of the Golden Trail Series races and if you're unfamiliar with the Cetus Matrix, it's a European team you might be familiar with, like Elise Ponchette was on there as well, as Anthony Felber currently runs for them. It's actually a development team, um that they have in Europe, which is pretty neat. So, um, very, very kind of tied in there. They do a lot of golden trail series races and stuff like that. Um. Followed by Awana uh Corazar of Spain Um, she's a Solomon runner as well as Annie Cousy of Spain.

Speaker 1:

And, last but not least, we want to give a big shout out to a well, pretty well-known American athlete. She just finished up the Hachikong Sky Race a couple of weeks ago. Shout out to Michelle Merlis I think Merlis is the way to pronounce her last name. She resides in Massachusetts, former Solomon athlete, and she's also a member former member of the Team USA. She did run in Chiang Mai, thailand, in the 40K Trail in 2022. So big shout out to her. She's a crusher. We want to send her the best of luck. A little bit of American home cooking, but you know, we want to cheer on the Americans.

Speaker 1:

It's a little bit more of an American podcast, but hell yeah. On the men's side we've got Loshik Robert Robert of France, who runs for team Kip Run. We've also got Jean Luca Gianno of Italy on team Brooks, as well as Miguel Arsenillo of Portugal, who runs for Calais. I believe we also have Mr Ricardo Cherta of Spain, who's a Dinafit athlete turning up, as well as Aether man I can't even pronounce his last name, it's Zunzungi of Spain. Sorry, aether. Zunzungi of Spain Sorry, aether, I butchered your last name From Team Dynafit, as well as South African runner Kennedy Sukuthi from Team Hoka.

Speaker 1:

So this is going to be a pretty sweet race. Like I said, not a huge American contingent coming out. I think that's probably because we've got Meet the Minotaur in just two weeks, so we're going to have less Americans on this race. What a beautiful location, though. Madeira is just amazing Very mountainous, very technical, lots of stairs, pretty ragged, rugged, technical terrain. This is going to be a really sweet race to follow along. We'll have some results for you guys next week, and I think that's it. So that's all the news.

Speaker 1:

This week we got into some GoPro games. We got into what's going on in the Merrill world. Uh, skyrunner world series. We talked about some grassroots stuff. Um, not a lot going on in the FKT scene this week. Didn't see much, as far as my notes went. Um, for those Colorado runners out there, the high country is opening up. I was able to get into the the high country this past weekend, so shout out to the high country. Um, yeah, I think that's all I got for you guys. Um, keep an eye out.

Speaker 1:

We do have episode 15 of the steep stuff podcast dropping this upcoming weekend, or this Friday, I should say um with miss Lacey Burr Burgess. Um, colorado Springs runner. She's very popular on the OCR as well as the sub ultra trail runner scene as well. Absolute killer. Really excited to uh to get this episode out to you all.

Speaker 1:

And then, following starting on this upcoming Monday what's the date for that? Starting this upcoming Monday, the 17th we are going to have the Broken Arrow VK race preview drop. I put that episode on with co-host Mr Nick Tusa. We previewed the VK. That is one you guys are not going to want to miss. Lots of amazing storylines there. We give our top 10 on both the male and female side, as well as our predictions for some storylines and how we think things are going to play out for the week. On the 18th we also have the Meet the Minotaur Sky Race 33K race prediction and preview episode dropping with co-host Mr Nick Tusa. On the 19th we're going to have the Broken Arrow 46K race preview episode dropping and on the 20th we're going to have the 23K race preview episode dropping.

Speaker 1:

So, guys, next week is Broken Arrow week. This is a huge week in trail running, if not one of the biggest weeks we have between Broken Arrow and Western States the following weekend. So we definitely want to celebrate and kick this off. Like I said, the 17th to the 20th is going to be really busy, so you guys are going to want to tune in and give it some love. And yeah, that's all I got for you guys for this week. If you did enjoy this episode, please go ahead and hop on to Apple or Spotify and leave us a rating and review. Really appreciate that. Um, the more ratings and reviews we have, the more I can get the sub ultra coverage out to the rest of the world so they can kind of follow along and hopefully provide some some value for you guys. So, without further ado, I hope you guys have a great rest of your week. Um, keep an eye out for the episode on Friday. And that's it. Steep stuff podcast. I'm your host, james Lauriello. This was episode four of the sub stuff. Thank you.
