Speaker 1:

Hey guys, welcome back to the Steep Stuff Podcast. I'm your host, james Lauriello, and today we've got a banger of an episode, one of the many bangers of many episodes that we've had. We are going to have the Sub Stuff Episode 5. For those of you who are new to the podcast or just joining us, the Sub Stuff is basically just a recap, a little weekly breakdown of everything that happened over the past week in our sport of sub ultra and get Jesus God, we got a. We had a busy weekend, guys. Uh, broken arrow sky race just went down. We had the meet, the Minotaur sky race, as well as the sky race do make can tour, which is a French sky race that also happened. So we had two races on the sky Racing World Circuit the Sky Racing World Series that just went down this past weekend, as well as the Broken Arrow Sky Race that took place between the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of June this past week. So, without further ado, let's dive into it and kind of get into some of the storylines that went down.

Speaker 1:

The weekend really started on friday, the 21st. Broken arrow um kicked off their weekend on friday with the vk, the iron face challenge, as well as the 18k. The vk, obviously one of the crown jewels of our uh kind of the racing in the united states. I mean, this was arguably one of the most competitive races ever assembled from sub ultra races ever assembled on american soil. I mean, if you were to probably break down some of the ITRA scores and then combine everything, uh, this might've been the top. I don't really know this was. This was wild. What a stack race. Um, we also had the iron face challenge, which is a fun little five to six mile race that leverages a via Ferrara. Um Verada, sorry. Um, if you guys have not tried out a via Verada, really fun Um, probably the only race in the United States. Um, kind of of that kind. And last but not least, broken arrow also kicked off for Friday with the 18 K race, which was a new kind of a new racing format, new distance they introduced for this year. Um, really was not like broken arrow light in any way. It was not a very easy course. I mean, I believe it was like 18 K with like 4,500 feet of vertical, so you were going over kind of KT 22 as well as washing out some of the storylines. We're only going to really break down the VK on Friday.

Speaker 1:

Some of the storylines from the VK. I mean, Joyce Nauru really showed up in a big way. She kind of, you know, proved and showed why she's amongst the best in the world. Um, as well as Anna Gibson. She really showed some insane raid range. Um, she's been, you know, kind of on the tracks all year and now she's back on the trails kind of doing doing this dual sport. Um, and wow, just showed up in a huge way. She's so fit Um. And last but not least, like Ellie Mac really showed up as well. Um, she really showed that she can compete at the highest level. Um, even when dealing with an injury. You know Ali Mac had not run that much since the last golden trail series race over in Kobe. Um, so just amazing that she was able to show up at such a world-class VK race and just throw down and put down a killer time and finish on the podium. So just incredible. Shout out to Allie Mack.

Speaker 1:

On the men's side, patrick Kipaniego showed up in a big way as well. I feel like in a lot of ways he showed why he's, you know, the two-time vertical champ. He put a beating on everybody else in the field 36-minute VK on a pretty tough course, so pretty amazing to see him show up. Jim Wamsley also showed just such incredible range in second place. Um, you know, for those of you who don't know who Jim Wamsley is, you probably should do some Googling. Um, yeah, just incredible range. The guy is running Western States next week and just showed up and threw down and just kind of be some of these young whippersnappers um pretty wild. And then Mickey um, rosio and Christian Allen just showed why it kind of you know they're the, they're the future of the sport in a lot of ways, like such heart. I don't know if you guys saw that um real, that broken arrow posted of these two guys just just killing each other to get to the fine at the finish right behind Jim Walmsley. Um, you know, it looked like they were having heart attacks at the end. It was pretty wild. So kudos to those gentlemen for absolutely throwing down and just leaving it all out there. I mean, that's what the sport is all about.

Speaker 1:

Let's get into times. One of the things I wanted to do is kind of break down the top 10. I feel like for this race was so deep that the top 10 really deserved a big shout out. So we're going to talk about the top 10. We'll start with the women's field and we're also going to break down some times.

Speaker 1:

In first place in the VK was Joyce Nauru in 45 minutes 39 seconds and second place was on a Gibson in 4735. So, as you could see, kind of that separation between Joyce and Anna that's almost it's a little over two minutes, so pretty solid separation. Joyce was able to get over the rest of the field, um, and third place was Ali Mac in 4750. In fourth place was Hallie Hoffman in 4850. In fifth place was Jess Boreo in 4859. In sixth was Rachel Tomziak in 50 minutes and nine seconds. In seventh place was Abby Locke in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. In eighth place was my coach and one of my favorite trail runners of all time, ms Tabor Hemming, in 50 minutes 34 seconds. In ninth place was Jade Bellsburg, 50 minutes 37 seconds. And in 10th place was at least tingle Was that tingle sad? In 50 minutes 50 seconds. Sorry if I mispr must pronounce any of these last names.

Speaker 1:

Moving over to the men's field, in first place and I believe I don't know broken arrows changed this course so many times that, like I don't even know if we can call this a course record, I mean, but just an amazing performance from patrick kip and yago 36 minutes 21 seconds. The guy is an absolute stud. In second place, right behind pat Patrick, um. Mr Jim Walmsley 37 minutes 49 seconds. Pretty stout, not bad at all. Um, like I said, just shows such incredible range. The guy is one of the greatest trail runners of all time. Um, you know he's really known. You know he's known now mostly as the first male um. You know American UTMB winner, um, as well as many time Western States winner. But like, just showed such incredible range. He took his wizard sticks out there and chase, chase Patrick up the hill. Pretty dope, pretty wild to watch. Um shout out to Wamsley Um.

Speaker 1:

And third place was Mickey Rosio Um, sorry, buddy, I continue to mispronounce your last name or your first name as well 38 minutes three seconds. And fourth place was Mr Christian Allen 38 minutes eight seconds. And fifth place was my other coach and one of my favorite trail runners, mr Eli Hemming, in 38 minutes 49 seconds. And sixth place was Remy LaRue in 39 minutes 26 seconds. And seventh place was Philemon in 39 minutes 30 seconds. And in eighth place was Ryan Becker in 39 minutes 30 seconds. And an eighth place was Ryan Becker in 39 minutes 33 seconds. Big shout out to Ryan Becker. Guys. I don't know if you guys follow him on Strava. Definitely give him a follow on social media. Strava is a great place to follow him as well.

Speaker 1:

This guy's coming back, really just coming back from injury. I know he's been dealing with a lot of Achilles pain. I don't know if, I don't believe he had surgery, but I know he took a bunch of time off of running and just kind of has kind of been going through it. So let's, let's wish him the best of luck in the season coming off injury and, jesus Christ to finish, eighth place in this field coming off an injury like that Pretty wild. So big shout out to Ryan Becker. In ninth place was Mr Cam Smith, also returning from injury, in 40 minutes it looks like 40 minutes five seconds. And then in 10th place was legend Darren Thomas in 40 minutes 28 seconds.

Speaker 1:

Nothing but amazing things to say about Broken Arrow weekend. I mean this VK was just absolutely wild. I don't know if you guys followed along, but definitely see if you can check out some of those reels that are on Instagram that Broken Arrow posted. I mean this was straight up a ski hill to get this to get started. And then, not only was it straight up a ski hill, you're basically bushwhacking for the first quarter mile of what it looked it might've even been worse Um, just like no trail. And then, until you break off into the road, so pretty cool to follow along. Um, you know big shout outs to a lot of guys out there. Um, also big shout out to like Andy Wacker, big shout out to Kieran Nay, um, and just a bunch of, uh, and you know, just a bunch of friends of the podcast.

Speaker 1:

So, all right, moving on, we're going to get into Saturday. Saturday was a big day in trail running. We had the broken arrow 46 K. We also had the meet, the Minotaur sky race. We're going to start with the Broken Arrow 46K. For those of you who don't know, the Broken Arrow 46K is actually really the Broken Arrow 42.5K, so it's about a marathon distance 26.4 miles, and it's got about 2,774 meters of vertical. For you Americans out there, which is most of my listeners, it is 9,100 feet of vertical. Lots of storylines. We're going to start with some of the 46K women's storylines.

Speaker 1:

One of the big things we got to talk about is just like. Tony McCann just showed up in a big way. 15th place overall Showed exactly why she might be. I mean, it depends on how you define short course. I mean maybe we'll call this like a marathon distance, but I think from the marathon distance to the 50, to the 50 K, she's one of the best, if not the best, in the world. I mean, you see other girls like Jennifer Lickner kind of in that in that category, brittany Charbonneau um, yeah, tony McCann is just a, an absolute beast. So congrats to her to just show up and absolutely dominate this race.

Speaker 1:

Um, and second place was clear roads. Big shout out to her as well. Um, she had a giant result. This was no surprise. Clear roads took third in the rut 50 K. She's had a lot of other giant results, so good on her for uh competing very well at this distance. And big shout out as well to Amanda Basham, who was competing in the triple crown, coming out in third place for this race. Pretty, pretty awesome.

Speaker 1:

Um, on the men's side of the field, pretty cool as well. Um, we had training partners, jeff McGavro and Adam Peterman duking it out for second and third, which is wild. Um, man, I don't know. Again, you gotta hop on the broken arrow Instagram and you could just see some of these reels of these guys running together, poetry in motion. Um, just just really cool, really really cool.

Speaker 1:

Um, and well, as first place, we had mr david sinclair. He is indeed back. I know he probably didn't get the result that he wanted at the broken arrow vk I believe I can't remember if he was 12th or 14th but man, did he show up in a big way and absolutely dominate the field. I mean, he beat the rest of the field by 10 minutes. I mean, david sinclair is absolutely for real, if you didn't think he was already, which he absolutely was and is. Um, yeah, welcome back, david Sinclair, holy shit. Um, okay, some other things.

Speaker 1:

It seemed like heat was a big factor in this race. I didn't even look at the temperature, but it seemed like everybody was really suffering. Um, I know we had some pretty notable athletes kind of go down with some some heat exhaustion and some issues out there. So, uh, we were seeing them the best as well and, yeah, just kudos to everybody for being able to manage the heat. It seemed like it was a killer, killer year out there in the heat.

Speaker 1:

So we're going to start off with? We're going to start off with the women's top 10. We'll get going with the female 46 K women winners. We're going to start with Tony McCann, who finished in four hours 52 minutes 34 seconds, followed by Claire Rhodes, not too far behind, in five hours seven minutes 19 seconds. Amanda Basham finished in third in five hours 16 minutes five seconds, followed by the pride of Telluride, lindsay Allison, in five hours 21 minutes 16 seconds. And fifth place was shout out to Colorado Springs runner, sarah Gould, in five hours 23 minutes 17 seconds, and sixth place was Emily Mann in five hours 34 minutes 43 seconds, and seventh place was Heather Henry in five hours 35 minutes and eight seconds. And eighth place was Barrett Gray in five hours 38 minutes and 49 seconds, and in ninth place was Carmen Bongo in five hours 47 minutes 53 seconds, and 10th place was Lauren Williams in five hours 53 minutes 47 seconds. Congrats to all these ladies. What a stack.

Speaker 1:

Top 10, killer races everybody had on the men's side. Um, just like Tony McCann dominated in the women's field, there was just utter domination by David Sinclair in the men's field four hours one minute eight seconds for David Sinclair, beating the rest of the field by about 10 minutes. Um, actually a little over that Um. And second place was Jeff McGavro in four hours 11 minutes 39 seconds. The poor guy still has not broken the curse.

Speaker 1:

I believe this is his third second place. I can't, I think so. I think this was his third second place. I can't, I think so. I think this was his third second place, second or third, um, I think it's his third. So one of these years this guy's going to win this race. I'm sure he's going to keep coming back until he does just so much range as well. Um, I know he probably touts himself as a hundred mile specialist. I mean this guy as well as gotten. He was top American last year at series and all. He just has so much range and I'm sure he's probably aiming this year to go back to UTMB. So big shout out to him.

Speaker 1:

And third place was Mr Adam Peterman in four hours 12 minutes 31 seconds. Second appearance, actually third appearance of Mr Adam Peterman this year, second appearance on a very big stage. I know he had his first appearance of this year, coming back from injury at Canyons. Yeah, great race. Like I said, it seemed like it was pretty tight between Jeff and Adam throughout most of the race and Jeff was able to outkick Adam in the end, getting about a minute a little bit less than a minute on him.

Speaker 1:

In fourth place was Mr Cam Smith and four hours 21 minutes 58 seconds, also returning from injury. And fifth place was Gong Fu Meng in 4 hours 27 minutes 24 seconds. In sixth place was Mr Cole Campbell, shout out to the pride of I believe he's a Western runner from Gunnison Friend of the podcast. We were trying to get Cole Campbell on the podcast. He finished in sixth place in 4 hours 29 minutes 32 seconds, great guy. In seventh place was Mr Nick Handel, former podium finisher at this race, in 4 hours 36 minutes 24 seconds, great guy, um. And seventh place was Mr Nick Handel, um, former podium finisher at this race, in four hours 36 minutes 24 seconds. In eighth place was Greg Crathwell in four hours 37 minutes 33 seconds. And ninth was Gordon Giani in four hours 41 minutes 19 seconds. And in 10th place was Joshua Reed, to the pride of Cortez Colorado, in four hours 42 minutes. Was Joshua Reed, to the pride of Cortez Colorado in four hours 42 minutes 25 seconds.

Speaker 1:

So big shout out to these ladies and gentlemen what an awesome race. This was to follow along. Um, man, the heat. The heat just seemed like it smoked everybody. So a big uh, you know big shout out for everybody for, uh, for kind of dealing with that and getting through. All right, let's get into Sunday. We're going to finish up broken arrow before we get to meet the minotaur. I figured we're going to keep these in in motion as we go, so we're going to move over to sunday. The one and only race that broken arrow puts on on sunday is kind of their second crown jewel besides the vk, and it's going to be the broken arrow.

Speaker 1:

23k. This race is a world mountain running, long distance, world cup race. So you get points for this and, in addition, you also get points for this because it's a golden trail, national series race. Um, the course itself not actually 23 K, it's about 21.75 K, so it's about 13.5 miles, it's about a half marathon, so it's basically half of the 46 K, which is two loops. This is one loop, um, boasting about 1,433 meters of climbing, and for you Americans out there, that's 4,700 feet. That's a good amount of vert for 13 miles. It's a pretty solid race, um.

Speaker 1:

So some stuff to talk about. We'll start with the females I'm going to start. I mean, the big discussion here is Joyce uh Nauru. Joyce, joyce is a killer man. Um, she's an absolute superstar in our sport and good for her show up and does absolutely throw down. It's kind of annihilate the rest of the field. Star in our sport and good for her to show up and just absolutely throw down. Just kind of annihilate the rest of the field.

Speaker 1:

Um, and second place, we also had Jay's Jade Bellsburg. She has arrived on the scene. She was second at this race this year. Um, and just, I just want to like preface this If you guys ever doubt yourself or if you're one of those people that think, like I can never get better and never improve, jade Bellsburg finished 51st in this race in 2022. Improve, jade Bellsburg finished 51st in this race in 2022. Okay, and just got on the podium in second place this year in 2024. So, just, it's a little thing. Always bet on yourself, always believe in yourself. Um, you never know. You never know what your future could hold. So absolutely inspiring and incredible performance by Jade Bellsburg. Um, and in third place.

Speaker 1:

Another absolutely inspiring result was my coach, miss Tabor Hemmering. Tabor, shout out to Tabor. It's a totally inspiring performance, kind of gutting through. She's pretty public about it so I'm sure you guys saw on their YouTube and on her Strava. It's kind of working through a small back thing and just to gut that out and just be very gritty, competing and chasing Joyce for most of the entire race and just finishing on the podium. Just very inspiring. Big shout out to Tabor Super awesome On the men's field.

Speaker 1:

Patrick Kipaniego, amongst the best in the world. I mean I feel bad for Remy. He's going to have his hands full this year in the Golden Trail World Series chasing Patrick. I mean this is pretty wild. Patrick definitely has shown his chops. Absolutely dominated this world-class field. Big shout out to him. Absolutely dominated this world-class field. Big shout-out to him. In second place as well, eli Hemming shows why he's Eli Hemming, one of the best in the world. Absolutely amazing. First-place finisher last year, second place this year. The guy just absolutely dominates.

Speaker 1:

And yeah, we've got some new. I think the last piece of like news is we've got some new names in the top five. Like not all of our favorites. Kind of snuck in there. We had some some new names. Um, specifically on the men's field, kind of sneak in there and uh and kind of, uh, you know, assert their claim as the future of the sport. So kind of wild, pretty cool to follow along.

Speaker 1:

We're gonna get into, uh, the top 10 first. Um, for the top 10, we're gonna start with the females. Um, first place was joyce naru, only in 211, two hours 11 minutes 52 seconds, just 27 years young. Uh, joyce is absolutely, you know, cementing her place at the top right now. And second place was jade bellsberg in two hours 12 minutes 29 seconds.

Speaker 1:

In third place was tabor hemming in two hours 13 minutes 31 seconds. And fourth place was the great and powerful Allie Mack in two hours 14 minutes 53 seconds. And fifth place was fan favorite Danny Marino, adidas Tareks runner, in two hours 17 minutes four seconds. And sixth place was Rachel Tomciak, runner for Merrill, in two hours 21 minutes 11 seconds. And seventh place was Sydney Peterson in two hours 23 minutes, one second and eighth was Abby Locke in two hours 23 minutes, one, second and eighth was Abby lock in two hours 24 minutes and 42 seconds. And ninth place was Sarah Carter in two hours 26 minutes and 29 seconds. And then 10th was Carly Rampell in two hours 30 minutes 38 seconds.

Speaker 1:

So, really tight race between the ladies Like, what an awesome thing to follow along, super fun. Um, like I said, if you haven't checked out broken arrows, um't checked out Broken Arrows live stream this year. But if you haven't checked out some of the reels and stuff that they have on their Instagram page, definitely go, we can follow along, kind of get some back information on the race. They did a phenomenal job over on the men's side Patrick Kip and Diego. One hour 45 minutes 37 seconds. What a beast.

Speaker 1:

Eli Hemming in one hour minutes 37 seconds. What a beast. Um, eli hemming in one hour 47 minutes for second place. And third place was philemon in one hour 50 minutes 23 seconds. And fourth place was colorado and mr taylor. Stack the pride of salida, colorado out of nowhere in one hour 51 minutes 12 seconds. What a beast. New name got a new name on here. It's pretty exciting to uh to see some new names. Um, fifth place was Mr Mickey Rosio in one hour 52 minutes 16 seconds. And sixth place was Hawk, call the pride of Utah, in one hour 54 minutes four seconds. Um, I do recognize that name. He, I believe, was a top 20 finisher last year in the 23 K and I did recognize his name on the US Mountain Running Champs at Snowbird start list. So this kid's got a future man. Sixth place not bad, pretty exciting. And seventh place was Andrew Douglas in one hour 54 minutes 28 seconds. And eighth place was Remy LaRue.

Speaker 1:

This guy is a stud, absolute range. I mean last weekend he was just at the mount mount washington road race. I believe he got second place, chasing uh the goat, mr joseph gray, up the uh, up the mountain. And he comes back doubles on a weekend and goes and gets himself an eighth place finish at one of the most stacked 23ks in america in one hour 55 minutes nine seconds. And ninth place was mr sam hendry in one hour 55 minutes 24 seconds, so just behind remy. And in 10th place was rising star and member of the trail team, mr cade michael, in one hour 55 minutes 30 seconds. That's another name to watch out for. Cade michael is absolutely on the set in the sport.

Speaker 1:

Um, andy andy really knows how to pick uh pick talent for the trail team, so a big shout out to him. Um, all all right guys. So that's broken arrow weekend. Um, if you guys have any comments, questions, anything, feel free to reach out to me. Pretty awesome weekend all along. Um, I think they would admit this was one of their most successful weekends that they've ever had at this race.

Speaker 1:

Um, and yeah, it was really fun to preview as well as follow along. Um, yeah, it was kind of a bummer. You know, we, uh, I mean, everything was exciting, but there was, uh, you know, some athletes that didn't weren't able to show because of, you know, injuries and things like that. So we wish them, you know, the ability to kind of, you know, get healthy and make it to start lines uh, healthy, um and yeah, so, and man, I need I gotta get better at picking my picks. And man, I got to get better at picking my picks. Shit, not too good. Nick crushed me in pick picking.

Speaker 1:

All right, so meet the Minotaur Sky Race, the race you guys have all been wanting to hear about, the 33K race in Cranmore, british Columbia. Wow, what an amazing race. I don't know if you guys followed too closely along, but a few days just before the race, mr Adam Campbell sent me a DM of some of the snow that was on the course. I mean, we're talking like they got, like you know, some serious power up high only a few days. Um, so I know a lot of that was melted out, but it created some good storylines leading into the race. Um, for those of you who don't know, um, like I said, this is a 33 K race, so 20 something miles, 90 miles, 92,900 meters of climbing and that's about 9,512 feet of vertical. Just an international, world-class field. This was super fun to follow along.

Speaker 1:

We're going to get into some of the females first and we can kind of get into the news after kind of want to break down some of the top 10 on both the women's and male side now. Now, one thing to note is a very heavy elite field toward Arc'teryx because it's an Arc'teryx sponsored event. So you're going to recognize a lot of international Arc'teryx names, like Elise Ponchette, henrietta Albon, emma Cook-Clark. There's quite a few that showed up to race this race on the women's side. So yeah, so we'll get started with some of the winners.

Speaker 1:

First place was Miss Emma Cook Clark, in four hours 52 minutes 18 seconds. And second place was household name Miss Elise Ponchette, coming over from France, in four hours 56 minutes 24 seconds. And the third place was Karina Carsoleo in five hours 10 minutes 27 seconds. For those of you that don't recognize that name, you absolutely should. She is a straight up killer. For those of you that don't recognize that name, you absolutely should. She is a straight up killer.

Speaker 1:

Just finished first place at the Mexico Sky Challenge World Series race. Phenomenal, phenomenal athlete. She runs for Black Diamond. In fourth place was Miss Robin Lesh in five hours 12 minutes five seconds. In fifth place was Ruby Lindquist in five hours 17 minutes. Big shout out to Ruby. She's just like super solid.

Speaker 1:

I mean top 10, top five really, for all of these races that she showed up to. She was top five at um, mexico sky challenge, top five at meet the Minotaur it's about all you could ask for. It's really solid times here. Um, and sixth place was, uh, the partner of Mr Jonathan album, miss Henrietta album. Five hours 18 minutes 35 seconds. I guess that they're on this side of the pond because Jonathan's going to be getting ready to run Western States next week. So pretty cool little side quest for Henrietta to go up to go race meet the Minotaur Pretty dope. And seventh place was Chris Asaba in five hours 19 minutes 14 seconds. And ninth place or, excuse me, eighth place was megan cook in five hours 46 minutes two seconds. And ninth place was michelle ready in five hours 47 minutes six seconds. And in tenth place was tess ammer in five hours 49 seconds or 49 minutes four seconds.

Speaker 1:

Um, some little interesting tidbits that I found interesting here. Just one one little note on the women's field. Like, emika Clark ran 15 minutes faster in this year's win than she did in the previous year's win, which is kind of wild, finishing in four hours 52 minutes 18 seconds. So super stout to see a couple of the top women finishing in under five hours in this race. Emika Clark and Elise Ponchette were within four minutes of each other, just sneaking under the five-hour mark. So congrats to both those ladies, congrats to all these ladies.

Speaker 1:

On the men's side of the field we have Mr Scott Patterson, absolute phenom. I had no idea who he was until somebody reached out to me and was like yo, you really screwed up in your picking. Shout out to Sean Rimmer for letting me know that I missed Scott Patterson signing up for this race. Absolute world beater. Scott Patterson actually dominated this race in four hours eight minutes 26 seconds, followed by fan favorite, my buddy, mr Jackson Cole.

Speaker 1:

Check out episode four of the Steep Stuff podcast, mr Jackson Cole, in four hours 10 minutes 30 seconds, followed by the pride of Boulder, colorado, johnny Luna Lima, in four hours 18 minutes 40 seconds. So what a stout top three. In fourth place was Carl Ogston in four hours 19 minutes 40 seconds. In fifth place was Mr Adam Loomis, the pride of Utah, in four hours 21 minutes 28 seconds. Adam Loomis if you don't know that name, you absolutely should. I believe he just knocked off the dub at the Gorge Waterfalls 100K. So super stout athlete, whole lot of range too. Pretty cool to get a top 10 at a World Sky Racing Series race and then as well do pretty well in the 100K. So in sixth place was Mr Morgan Elliott, pride of Colorado, in four hours 23 minutes 35 seconds. Uh, no doubt I would. We would be sitting in morgan's name in the top 10. Super strong runner, um. In seventh place was mr aaron robertson in four hours 34 minutes six seconds. In eighth place was evan ethan peters in four hours 34 minutes and 50 seconds. In ninth place was Mr Scott McGuire in four hours 35 minutes two seconds. And in 10th was Jesse McElvoy in four hours 35 minutes 10 seconds.

Speaker 1:

So back on that note that I made about Scott Patterson. If you guys did not recognize that name, he is an Olympic cross country skier, kind of like a David Norris, kind of like a David Sinclair. These guys just have insanely large aerobic engines and they just come and just dominate us at this game. So, scott Patterson he actually competed in 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics I don't know how I missed this name. He's now retired and he's at the ripe age of 32 and he is just going to come and just dominate our sport. So welcome Scott Patterson. I know he's got some older results from what I looked at a few years back from like the rut and things like that, but, yeah, just what an epic performance to come out and just, you know, just dominate the field. Amazing for him.

Speaker 1:

And in in second place not too far behind in about two minutes, was mr jackson cole. Shout out to my last portiva teammate again, if you haven't listened to episode four, this deep stuff podcast jackson cole. Um, jackson actually ran 10 minutes and 30 seconds faster this year than he did versus his win in 2023. So just goes to show you how much faster these races are getting now. Obviously, 10 minutes to minutes. You're looking at what our conditions like Seemed like. Conditions seemed pretty prime for this race. Didn't seem too hot. Yeah, so I'd say those are the storylines for what actually went down to meet the Minotaur. What an amazing race. I cannot wait to preview this race again next year. I might actually even be there next year to go race this race, just because, like, have you guys seen this course? Just absolutely insane. Go hop on instagram and give them a follow. Like, meet the minotaurs got a very special race. Um, that they're pushing so pretty cool. Uh, big shout out to them, and then we also.

Speaker 1:

So this is the first weekend of the year that we've had two uh races on the international sky racing world series. Uh happened in the same weekend, so so on Saturday we had Mitha Minotaur, on the 22nd and on Sunday, 6-23, we had Sky Race du Mercantour. It's a French race. It takes place in Saint-Martin-Vesible, france, a 30K race with about 2,150 meters of climbing, so it's about 7,053 feet. So pretty dope. So 30K, so looking around, 20 miles with about 7K feet of climbing, no joke.

Speaker 1:

We'll start with the women's field. We're not going to go too deep into this. Just because it was a very international field, less Americans showed up. Actually, I don't think any Americans showed up, so we're going to kind of just gloss into this. You know, just highlight the podium, talk about some of the winners there, and then we're going to kind of just gloss into this. You know, just highlight the podium, talk about some of the winners there, and then we're going to kind of get into what's happening next week.

Speaker 1:

So in first place on the women's side was Eri Finesse three hours 13 minutes 40 seconds, and second place was Nari Irguin. She was a Solomon runner in three hours 18 minutes six seconds. And then finally we have the pride of Great Britain, hollywood, in 3 hours 23 minutes 51 seconds. In the men's side we actually had first place Mr Alan Santana Blanco Actually, I'm sorry, Alan Santa Maria Blanco, solomon Runner in two hours 38 minutes 19 seconds. In second place we had a fan favorite, mr Rui Udia, in two hours 39 seconds, two hours 39 minutes 27 seconds. You guys might recognize that name from the Golden Trail World Series. I believe he's run Pike's Peak before. I could be wrong. I do recognize that name. In third place was Lorenzo Beltrami, in two hours 41 minutes 38 seconds, and he's on the Scarpa team. So we're just going to kind of get through that pretty quickly.

Speaker 1:

Um, if you guys have any notes or anything to ask or want more information on this race. Um, hop on to the sky racing world series. Sky running world series. Uh, you can kind of learn a little bit more. Um, so that's all the news that happened this past weekend. I'm going to do a little home cooking because I'm excited, because I'm going to be finally be toeing the line this week on this upcoming weekend. I think I don't know other than Western States we can kind of get into that after other than Western States I think this is another. Well, western States is obviously like the most well, one of the most well-known races in the world. Um, but on the sub ultra scene, I'd say Cirque series Brighton happening this weekend and I really don't have too many other races popping off. So that's that's kind of the news I've got. So, cirque series Brighton I'm pretty excited about, cause I'll be towing the line there while home cooking, cause I'm pretty psyched to be there.

Speaker 1:

Um, if you guys don't aren there, if you guys aren't familiar with the Cirque series, they are sub-ultra like kind of a mountain classic. And if you guys are unfamiliar with the mountain classic, it's kind of a 9K to 12 or 11K distance with high vertical. It's usually an up-down kind of race or multiple ups and downs. In this case, this is a very multiple up and down race. Take a place in Brighton If you guys are unfamiliar with Brighton ski resort in Utah, super excited to go to this race. This one in particular is going to be 6.7 miles, 3,115 feet of vertical.

Speaker 1:

I'd say it's probably the second most technical race out of the entire Cirque series. A lot of snow on this course. I've just been doing some previews and talking to some people that have that have looked at the course in the past couple of days and have said that there's quite a few snow fields, so I'm looking forward to playing in the snow again. Other than that, yeah, pretty technical. There's a beautiful boulder field that you got to climb that goes straight up to Mount Mellicent and then you kind of just like crest around this beautiful Wolverine Cirque with some of these beautiful alpine lakes, kind of down in the Cirque self and then, once you're done, you got to smoke and downhill and there's a big party at the end. So this is kind of uh, some of the purest, most fun form of sub ultra that we've gotten. Gotten the game so pretty exciting.

Speaker 1:

Um, some notable names that are going to be showing up to this race. On the female side Um, I don't know if anybody knows this, but Grayson Murphy is on the start list for this race. I've gotten mixed speculation because I have talked to her to see if she's going to be showing up and it's going to be kind of a game time decision. So Grayson Murphy is on the start list as well as Giselle Slotboom, who's a very well-known name, races the Cirque series every year Absolute killer. I think she raced some, I think kobe race for the golden trail world series this year.

Speaker 1:

Um. And third, um. Third most notable name is going to be ray coble. Um, pride of colorado. Um dina fit athlete, super solid ray um actually just spent um a good portion of the you know like the last like six to eight months over in Europe. Um skiing, um kind of preparing or really, you know like sharpening those schema legs and doing a lot of schema races. So big shout out to her. I'm excited to have her on the podcast. Actually so cool. Going to be fun to chat with her.

Speaker 1:

On the men's side Absolute savage of a human is David Norris running for team on um, excited to see him at the start line. That's probably the only time I'll be seeing him. We're also going to have Avery Collins showing up on the black diamond team, griffin Briley from normal Liam Hammond shot to Liam Hammond's I believe he's the winner of the broken arrow 11 K last year. As well as myself, I'll be out there. So that's it. That's all the news I have for you guys. Excited to be toewing the line for the first time in a while, that will turn the line for the first time in a while on a big race this upcoming weekend. Um, and yeah, last but not least, we do have Western States coming up this weekend.

Speaker 1:

Um, I know this is a sub ultra podcast, but man, oh man, am I excited to kind of follow along after my race. It'll be kind of fun to watch the live stream and kind of see what unfolds, see what Mr Walmsley and Mr Hayden Hawks and a lot of those guys and gals up front are able to do. So, yeah, without further ado, I hope you guys enjoyed episode five of the sub stuff. Yeah, have a great day, have a great rest of your week until Friday. Actually, on Friday, really quick.

Speaker 1:

Last thing, friday, big podcast coming out Christina Mascherina's three time, three time Pike's peak marathon champion. Um, on top of that, she's also a podium finisher at the broken arrow Skyrace 46 K. She's going to be racing the Mont Blanc marathon this year. She gave some great insight on just getting back from the Kobe trail race. Uh, that she did for the golden trail world series. She is a ball of energy. I absolutely love this conversation. It was so much fun having it. Great human, just an amazing human, and super inspiring. Her story is incredible. So, yeah, keep an eye out for Friday's podcast. Super fun, without further ado, guys. Steep Stuff, pod Sub Stuff, episode 5. Thank you.
