Have you ever played that game Red light Green Light 123?

“Thank you for calling GIH where we instigate growth one call at a time where we utilize antiquated technology to deliver 3-minute leadership lessons every day of the week!  This is message #69 and I am Aaron Havens.

This game used to stress me out as a young lad. My brother was pretty good at it. He has a lot of patience either like to run at crazy speeds and I rarely slow down so developing the skill or mindset or muscle memory to stop right before the counter got to turn around was crazy hard for me.

What kind of personality do you have. Would you stop charging a full second before the final countdown or are you like me and maybe you charged a little too long and had to start over.

So the conversation today is an extenuation of yesterdays topic where I briefly mentioned a grid in which I put tasks, red, yellow, green. I want to unpack this just a little more for everyone. This is really helped my organizational skills, my companies plan of attack, and I've seen other organizations. I've consulted with blossom under this grid. So here's a quick breakdown.

Red.  Any topic that is hot and needs attention right away.  This is what is addressed first.  Typically a topic just doesn’t show up in the red category.  If so, that item probably needs immediate attention!

Yellow.  A bit concerning.  Feeling a bit stuck.  Needs attention, needs action before it becomes a red.  Can’t push off a yellow much longer.

Green.  Can wait a bit… or maybe should be taken care of before it elevates to a yellow or red.  Let’s put items here so we have time to develop a plan of attack.  This is where we get to call the shots and be proactive not just reactive.

And like I mentioned yesterday, if everything is a red, or you have more reds than anything, something needs to change. You and your organization may be stuck in what Charles Hummel wrote about in his book “Tyranny of the urgent”. Not everything needs to be urgent.

Thanks for calling in today.  Tune in tomorrow for a fresh new topic.  At the sound of the beep:

What are things in your life that need to be color coded?  Can you see how this would help you realize your relationship as it relates to the true importance of that thing?

I’d like to know your initial thoughts…. Let them rip after the beep!
