By simply letting the story unfold… I paid $23 more for my meal.

Thank you for calling GIH where we instigate growth one call at a time where we utilize antiquated technology to deliver 3-minute leadership lessons every day of the week!  This is message #81 and I am Aaron Havens.

This past week, my wife and I went out for a fancy meal to celebrate 26 years of marriage. We went to a nice place.  It is a highly rated place with fantastic food. I had looked at the menu beforehand and had an idea what I wanted to eat, and as I sipped on my premium wine at the table, I decided what I would order as I looked at the menu. And then our waiter did something absolutely amazing. He took us on a journey explaining the origins of the restaurant why they are the number one rated restaurant in the area and what makes the menu special as he finished his spiel, he turned around and said oh when I come back, let me tell you about the three secrets of this place. Sure enough when he came back, about 7 to 8 minutes later it was enough time for me to wonder what he wanted to tell us.  I was intrigued.  He told us why the steaks were so important and about a special way we could “hack” the system if we wanted to upgrade.  By simply dragging me along, when he came back to get our final order, I ended up paying 23 more dollars and switched my meal.

Yeah.  He invited me into a story and let it play out.  I wanted the know the secret, and once I knew the secret I wanted to take part.  He was masterful and I still feel like I “hacked” the menu… when all I did was pay more for an upgrade.

Now if he would’ve just told us everything we needed to know the first time he visited our table, I can most certainly guarantee I would've ordered what I originally was thinking.

Eric Butterworth “Your fortune is not something to find but to unfold”

It might come down to patience.  It might come down to mastering an art.  It might come down to being ok if something is taking longer than anticipated.

My friends, let the story unfold. Live with a little bit of mystery. Live with a little bit of tension.  Live with a little bit of unknown. Often times the meal we are planning is good, however, if we let time tick, if we let it maturate… we might be surprised.

Live in such a way.  Work in such a way that you stay intrigued, you invite others into the story.  What you are working on is worth it.  What you are spending you time doing is worthy.

Thanks for calling in today.  Tune in tomorrow for a fresh new topic.  At the sound of the beep:

What is one thing you can do today to leave a little tension, create a little suspense, bring people along on an amazing journey?  If you can't think of anything, do this pick one person and tell them half of a story, and then create a reason to have to leave and come back later to tell them the second half try it let me know how it turns out.
