Speaker 1:

hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of shooting from the circle where we talk about rumble, our football netball clubs, a grade side. This is brett. Thank you for listening. So, with rumble, our plan is split round. Last week so they played last week, had to buy. This week, um, no game to record for this week. Um, what I'm going to do, though, is I'll go back through, have a bit of a recap on the last four games that rumble are at the moment are um with tongala, are undefeated four and zip um. Unfortunately, to the app um netball connect there is no live score, so, um, I really can't update the uh ladder, but I do know that 21 yesterday against beruga. So anyway, so, recapping, as I said, we there is, no, it was no game for rumble hour this week, so they had to buy, had a bit of a rest um, I know jess, through the week, turned around, told the girls to just rest up, freshen up um, because pretty much the next two weeks are going to be massive for them. So we'll get back. We'll get into them in a minute, but just recapping on their game.

Speaker 1:

So, round one, they played numerical uh, beat them convincingly, 74 to 40, so 34 goal. Uh, win was a bit of a hard fought match. First, it was hot, first game with new players. So you got Sarah, emily, jess Barnes Emily and Sarah come from Melbourne, they're Bandura A-grade girls, so and Jess Barnes well, we all know about Jess Barnes. She was phenomenal. That first game the whole team was actually. They put in a solid effort. There was no real standouts. Jess Barnes shot very, very well, sophie in that goal circle, and then Emily and Sarah in that midcourt with Kai and Madika did pretty well, as well as Jess Bamblett and Towns Steel. So convincing off to a flyer. First game shooting 74 goals. Obviously, your shooters are working very well in that circle. So they came off.

Speaker 1:

That had a solid week of training because the next game was going to be an absolute cracker. It turned out to be an absolute cracker. So they're coming up against Moama At Moama. A bit of history, uh, just recapping. So last year they lost by a goal in the last game of the of the home and aways. They had to win. Rumballara did so. They didn't play moama again and following week in a elimination, unfortunately due to, uh, a few umpiring circumstances. Um, moama won. So there's a bit of feeling there. And then the following week they come up against each other again and moema won again and knocked rumballara out of finals.

Speaker 1:

So you go to round two, 2024 um in moema and, yeah, it was a cracking game from the start. Now, uh, moema came out and I think they shot the first five or six goals. They were on song and they were leading at quarter time. So if we look at the way the score was, yeah, they were leading by six goals 12-6. That first quarter Moama were on song, they came off the court. They were believing in themselves and that's not taking nothing away from Rambalara Rambalara were believing in themselves too. They just, you know, a quarter time Tiana Steele said that you know in her interview that you know, they just were told just get back to basics, do what they know they've got to do, play their own game. They did and they came out and shot 13 goals to nine in that second quarter. So it was really it was a three-goal game at halftime.

Speaker 1:

So 21 Moama, 19 Rambalara and the game was on. It was on. You could feel the tension, you could feel the heat. Yeah, it was on, and it was just a matter of who was going to come out. In that third quarter they call it the premiership quarter and who was going to come out and who was going to capitalize on the other team's fundamental mistakes? And bang Rumballara did that. So, rumballara, they shot what? 18 goals to pretty much Rumballara, to Moama's nine in that third quarter, premiership quarter. And they just came out and went bang, capitalized on mistakes. They put pressure on the midcourt for Moama, they put pressure on their shooters Lisa Drysdale come off. They brought a new girl on probably not the best decision that they made, because lisa drysdale commands that uh goal circle for moama. But rumble are capitalized. They seen it and they capitalized. They seen a weakness. They seen the chain link was broken so they just went for it.

Speaker 1:

Three-quarter time scores Rambalara were six goals up. So they've turned from the first quarter they turned it to 12-goal, desperate, into a six-goal lead. So it was 36-30, and it was going to be for a cracker. Last quarter the crowd was into it, the players. You can see there was a bit of tense. Fourth quarter and Moama just came out and went bang, bang, bang. I think they shot the first three or four goals. You can see in the eyes of the girls at Rumballara that, yeah, there was a bit of shock, but they prevailed. They then turned around and got on their A game. So they shot 13 goals to 11 in that last quarter to come out winners by eight goals 49 to 41. Absolute, cracking game.

Speaker 1:

Round two we go into round three where they play at Kengapna. It was going to be another cracking game. Kengapna are very fierce, they're not going to give up, they'll continue, they'll continue, they'll continue. So they turn around and, yeah, they really really had a crack at it and which they knew. Rumbler knew that Kengapna were going to come out, so again started off a little bit slow.

Speaker 1:

Round three I think Moema, I mean, can get up in the kick shot the first, probably two, three goals, maybe four goals. So Rambalara had to work again from behind. Quarter time was a nine-goal-eight lead to Rambalara by one goal. Their shooters started to get on top. They started to start to work together. One goal their shooters started to get on top, they started to start to work together.

Speaker 1:

Next quarter came on and Rambalara saw that that's when they did their best work. Is they come out? They shot 11 goals. Well, actually, yeah, 11 goals to what's that To four? So 11 goals to four in that second quarter Rumbelara on song. So halftime score was 22-12, 10-goal lead.

Speaker 1:

But you can't doubt Kingup, they were going to come out of it. They were going to go hard in that third quarter. You could tell by just the way the game was playing. And they did. They shot nine goals to Rumbelara's 15, or actually 16 goals or so, but they did all right. But Rambalara just seemed to be able to play. Their midcourt was on top. Their midcourt was outstanding Emily, sarah, madika and Kai they just ran over top of them. Morgan Zotti for Kingutna tried her hardest but they just didn't have anyone else. They had a lot of passengers, they didn't have anyone else. So it was a 38-21, 17 goal lead to rumballara. Three-quarter time last quarter, uh, rumballara then turned around and shot another 19 goals to seven. So they really put their foot down and it was a 29 goal win by rumballara. So that was the round three.

Speaker 1:

Round four they then came up against Atchouk United. Again, another side that's tenacious yeah, tan Edwards, who's the new coach at Atchouk United. So another side that was going to have a bit of a show against Rumbelara. Rumbelara knew that and it's pretty good because they've played probably. Look, all games have been hard for them. So they've had to adapt and had to play to the style. But this time Rumbelara didn't come out slow, they came out, they went bang.

Speaker 1:

That first quarter, that defensive talk between Jess Bamblett and Chana Steele. Right across the court you had Jesse Barnes yelling out instructions, commanding that shooting circle and looking down the ring. I honestly think that Achiki and I just got lost. The shooters didn't know where to go because there was so much chat with Rambalara. As I said, jesse Barnes was chatting in that goal. Third, in that defensive circle you had Jesse Bamblett and Chandler Steele just working so well, rotating around, coming off, coming back, defending the post, defending the line, coming up, looking for those intercepts A lot of held balls for Atchiki United. So obviously that pressure, they just had nowhere to go. Uh, first quarter 14 to 5. So they're pretty much nine goals up straight away. Second quarter come in and you know, rumbler shot another 18 goals to what's that? Another seven, um, so they're on top again.

Speaker 1:

That second quarter, again that talk, that that chat, that defensive chat. I really think it confused the shooters. They had nowhere to go. Like Tanya Edwards, she was running around. I think she was trying to do too much. She was trying to work as a goal attack and be that extra mid-quarter, but then coming back in that circle and trying to get that feed, trying to score.

Speaker 1:

So they made a few changes. So halftime it was a 20-goal lead to Rumbelara 32-12. But you know, achiki and I would have done it before they were ready to come out. You know, most good teams will come back out far. They're not going to lay down. They're not going to lay down and that's what they did.

Speaker 1:

So in that third quarter Rambalara shot 12 to 10 to a chicken. Now after the game the defenders in Town of Steel and Jess Band were saying that third quarter shouldn't have happened. They just they sort of lost a little bit Rambalara in that defensive circle. Their chat sort of stopped. They really weren't chatting as much, they weren't talking as much. There was a couple of injuries. So Terrence Steele had a bit of a thigh injury so she came off.

Speaker 1:

They got a couple of new girls brought in to play in the wing defense and then goal defense position. So they sort of got a bit fanned out that way. So third quarter 44 22. It was a 22 goal lead. You could pretty much say the game was over, um. But it was just interesting to see what that fourth quarter was going to bring um, whether a chicken was still going to come out strong, whether you know rumble are. We're going to capitalize on it, go. No, we need to do something here, um. And that that last quarter they did. They got their side back on. So Tianna Steel, come back on. But you had the two, so one was from Big Ray, one was from 117, jorah, and they sort of came on and they changed their positions. So Jorah went to a wing attack and absolutely played a blinder.

Speaker 1:

In that last quarter Shooters were on song Soph and Jess Barnes still working together in that circle. Yeah, phenomenal. Want to come out, want to go stay in? They would rotate it, they'd roll off. They didn't want to get caught on that body, um, so they'll sort of rolling off, um. So sort of became that extra or you probably say mid-court, so she was coming out a lot more and getting that second or third feed and then feeding it back out to your wing attacks, your centers, even resetting and coming back to your wing defense and your goal defense at some stages.

Speaker 1:

So that last quarter Rambalara shot 20 goals to a Chukian and it's 10. So it was pretty much it was all over Red Rover. So it was a what was that? It's a 32 goal win by Rambalara. So they've had, you know, big margin wins, except for Moema, and that was expected. But a couple of little bit injuries. So the boy came at a good time for them. So obviously they're traveling a bit. So they haven't had a home game yet because of what's going on at the club. So they're still traveling. So the first four games, my opinions yeah, they've still got a bit of work.

Speaker 1:

I noticed last week against the Chuky United they sort of their chat was there for about a quarter and a half, two quarters, but then it sort of died off. And I found that when they were chatting and they were, you know, working at their defensive pressures and everything else, it sort of confused the shooters. They really had nowhere to go and Gianna and Jess were rolling off. They didn't want to get caught bodied. A couple of times they did get caught not defending the space. So they would defend a post and the shooter would open up a space for the shooter to get a pass inside and then they'd shoot. So they sort of had to work around that.

Speaker 1:

So they're using their footwork a little bit more, moving around, moving around to a confused feeder. So there's no point being body defending the post, having your body on the post side of your opponent, because it gives them space to open up to. They can step into that space, get that pass and then they can have a shot. So but if you're moving your feet consistently around that that at half moon, so you're going from one side to the other, to the other to the other, moving your feet you know it's sort of one. It confuses the passer um and two, your shooter then hasn't got that space to walk into, they haven't got that gap.

Speaker 1:

And that then comes down to you. If you're defending, they both defend, but both having that awareness to turn around and say, no, I need to come in and defend that space. You're not going to come off your other player because if you've got two great shooters, say a goal shooter and a goal attack, either one of them is going to get that ball, but you need to have that awareness and get around as quick or drop back as quick or whatever. So there's a few things to work on there, mid-court as well. Uh, rumble r, I found it, you know, too many times there would be two, possibly three players in one spot, so you've got a whole side of a court clogged and the other side open up. Um, that to me it's not like you need to work your.

Speaker 1:

Your centers need to work, your mid-quarters need to work together. So if you see one leading to one side, you know what you do is you don't take your opposition player to that side, bring them back out. Bring them back out to the other side. You have a bit of awareness. Bring them back out. So if your center has got the ball, your wing defense comes out the other side, your wing attack steps back into that shooting. Third, then your goal defense can come through drive and and it sort of stops that congestion, because once that congestion happens, yeah, your ball's not going to go nowhere and it's just little passes, little this little, that pissy things. You need to open it up. You know the court is big enough to open up, but that just means your goal defense needs to work harder. So tiana, still playing goal defense, she needs to work harder coming through that drive, coming through the midcourt. If you want to run centers through the midcourt down the guts, you need to have that drive.

Speaker 1:

But you need to spread. So you need to wing, you need a wing defense in your center to spread, same as your goal attack and your wing attack. You need to spread and just sort of open it up a bit, because all of a sudden you've got three girls standing there wanting that ball. And if you've got three girls standing there and if your opposition is switched on, they will come off and then open up a space. And then you've got your defenders that have to defend hard.

Speaker 1:

So, um, and then your shooters. You know they've got, yeah, there's work in progress right across the court for rumbler. Yeah, they're foreign, zip, but there's still work to do. And then they're a new. They're a new side. They've got new players. So they're still working out their feeds. They're still working out where to go, where to shift, where to split, where to cut. So I think they'll get better. I know that they'll get better, and that's just those little things that they need to work on.

Speaker 1:

But they chat, they need to continue chatting. Your goal circle needs to chat, your mid-quarters needs to chat, they need to have. You know, and sometimes you know, players just don't talk, they just go. Yep, I know what I've got to do. So you've got the likes of Tiana Steele, who can turn around, and Jess Bamblett they can commandeer and brigade that back defensive court.

Speaker 1:

Then you've got Jessie Barnes up in the shooting circle. When the ball's coming down defensively for Rambalara, she can then turn around and she can direct the traffic. Tiana can direct traffic as she's coming down again, she can turn around and tell the wing attacks the centers, the goal, attack the shooters where to go, roll off, go post, whatever. And then Jessie Barnes well, she's just a general down there in the defensive circle. She will then turn around and tell she had a roll off post. Yeah, go high, go low, pocket, whatever, um. So there are a few things that they need to work on, um, but they will get there, um, and they need to. Probably this will the next two weeks. We'll find out where rumble rr.

Speaker 1:

Uh, as I said, they're four and zip. Um, you can't really read into that. Um, they've had some hard games, yes, and they've had some big score wins, but the next two games, so next week they head down the highway, down the um, down the highway to denny. Um, you know, and denny have always, always been good. They were undefeated for two years, I think it was until Tongala beat them in the grand final last year. So they've been undefeated for nearly two, three years.

Speaker 1:

You know Rhianna Maxwell in that shooting circle. She's very strong. I'm not too sure who else they've got. I heard that they were playing a couple of under-17 girls, so maybe they're on a rebuild. But you can't rest on your loyals. You can't sit on your hands with Denny. They will come out strong. Next week it's at their home game. Rumbelara got to travel again. This is where you'll see where Rumbelara's at. This is where, if they switch on, how good they are, how well they're going to connect their shooters, connect their mid-quarters, connect their defensive end connects. I know I think, yeah, two years ago Tiana Steel was playing at Moama. They played Denny up in Denny and they only lost by a goal and, yeah, there was a few things going on. But yeah, tianis played against Rhiannon Maxwell Last year. She didn't start until round three, so they already played Denny when she was at Rumbelara. So, yeah, this year, that defensive circle of Jess Bamblett and Tianis, they really, really need to work together.

Speaker 1:

But what you do need to also is you need your wing defense to really put pressure on the wing attack. Stop that drive. You really need your center to push on that center. You need to swap. So if your wing defense comes off or your wing attack comes off, your wing defense, that center needs to pick up and that wing defense needs to go to that center. You really need to have two switched on. So you're pretty much playing a four a four team um defense in that defensive end.

Speaker 1:

And if you can put pressure on their midcourt, you put pressure on that ball coming down out of their defense. You've got half a chance to have either one had the ball turn over then to make a mistake and it goes out, or you get a hell ball. That's where it is. You can't rely and the wing defence in the centre cannot rely on Jess Bamblett and Tiana Steele to do it all. You know it's a team effort. You need to put pressure. Again, if they've got a turnover say it was a missed shot and they've got a rebound and it's coming down, your goal shooter needs to put pressure. Your goal attack needs to put pressure. Your wing attack it goes down the court.

Speaker 1:

If you can put pressure, pressure, pressure and help out those two defenders because they're going to have to work hard at it because Rhianna Maxwell, she's a damn good shooter. She knows how to play the game. She's been their coach for three years. You know undefeated. You know they've won two premierships in a row. They've won two premierships in a row. They know what. They know what's going on. They know how to play the game. So you really need to have those two on song, tiana and jess bamlett. But you also need to have your wing defense and jessanna on song as well.

Speaker 1:

You need to be able to put that pressure on their midcourt to the point where they have a missed throw, there's a turnover, there's a hell ball. Best scenario's a hell ball. Best scenario is a hell ball. But then you need to move it, but not move it quick, because I found a couple of times Rambalara seem to move too quick than what they're ready for. They won't. You know they're not settled. They'll turn around and all of a sudden they'll get the ball bang, bang and all of a sudden they're playing this fast game that they're not ready to play their fast game. Yeah, there needs to be a switch on a fast game, a slow game. Pass the ball around, because while you've got the ball. You've got the game. You've got three seconds to get rid of that ball. It's just a matter of keepings off and not making fundamental mistakes.

Speaker 1:

Roll off, you roll off your player. Roll off, you know. If you're a wing attack and you find it, you play a body and you don't want to be bodied, roll off, you know. Swap, switch, talk to your center. This is where we need rambalara this week and next week against tongala.

Speaker 1:

They really need to be switched on with their chat. Um, they need to have eyes on all the time. So the more always and the more chat on all the time. So the more always and the more chat, the better off they are. So then tiana and jess will know where to go. They'll know, you know, defend the pocket, defend this, defend that. They'll know where to go. They will know that they can't be here. They need to roll off. Defend the post. They need to know when to defend the post. And that's where it comes to jesse barnes standing there directly. She can see what's going on down there. She has played the game so many times. She's a three-time Wellman medalist. She needs to have voice. Tiana and Jess need to have voice. Your mid-quarters need to have voice.

Speaker 1:

So this week, yeah, against Danny, it is going to be a hard game. This will turn around and show where Rumble R are. This will turn around and show where Rumble R are. Look, my prediction is Rumble R will win, but maybe by one, two at the most it is going to be. It'll be that tight Either. Look, I don't want to say it but Rumble R hopefully will win by one or two. But if they don't, I honestly think they'll get beaten by 10 to 15 um, because that's the sort of side that denny are.

Speaker 1:

They are a very strong, very well um drilled side and rumbler need to stop that um. They need to really really stop that flow coming down from their den Danny's defensive end into their shooting and you need to put that pressure on. What you need is them to stop, because if they stop and they've got three seconds you're quick to reset, you're quick to get onto it, you're quick to get to your player, you're quick to defend. If they continue, if they have a rundown game where they're running it from the defense right through to their shooting, so it doesn't give the defenders a chance to reset, and then what Rumble are and need to do and I know they're working on it. They need to capitalize on their turnovers. They need to get the percentage of their capitalizations on their turnovers up.

Speaker 1:

I think we're sitting at 61%. That's not good. You win the game, but if you're running at 61 um capitalization on turnovers, you need to work on that, because they are gimme's, they are freebies. If you can get a turnover, whether it be a missed shot and you've got a rebound, or whether they've threw the ball outside, or whether they've had done for hell ball, that breaks the momentum, and that's a freebie. That is a freebie for you to have an opportunity to score another goal.

Speaker 1:

It goes the other way, though, too making sure that the fundamental mistakes you are, you pick them up and try not to make as many, but when you have a turnover, you need a turnover. You need to capitalize, you need a conversion. That conversion rate needs to be look, it needs to be 80, 90 percent. You need to. What it does is it puts pressure on their defenders, because they're looking at it going okay, we got the ball, we got the ball. Oh shit, hang on, it's coming back. They need to then pressure up, they need to defend up, and if you start converging, you know, on turnovers, 80, 90 percent, yeah, you're guaranteed of winning the game, you know, and if you, if the pressure is there on both sides, it's who?

Speaker 1:

This week, I feel it is all about um conversion on turnovers. Conversion on turnovers the side that converts more on a turnover because I know there's going to be a lot of turnovers, because there's going to be a lot of pressure on both sides but the side that converts on a turnover the best, their percentage rate is higher is going to win the game. And that's where rumble r and need to look at, they need to really look at their conversions on turnovers. They need to because they're freebies. You know, also trying to body yourself into that rebound, because if you don't want to give rihanna maxwell and whoever else the shooters are, you don't want to give them two, three, four shots, it's just, you might as well just stand there and let them shoot.

Speaker 1:

Defend it up, box out, get ready for that rebound, um, position yourself for that rebound. You know you might look at it going now. She's going to get it in, but you all what your mindset as a defender should be rebound, rebound, rebound, box out, box out, back, box out, rebound and then conversion once you get that rebound, looking down the field, looking down the court, that's when your mid-quarters need to be switched on, that's when your shooters need to be switched on, because as soon as they see you've got a rebound and you turn around, they need to be onto it, they need to be driving, they need to be looking for that pass. The next one should be looking for the pass. So you need to get your 45, run your 45 angles, pass. Run your 45 angles, pass, pass, pass and get it in and convert off rebounds, off turnovers. That is going to be the key for the next two weeks and I think, if they can work on that, I think they'll have it over Denny. And then the following week, which I'll do a preview of, they're going to play Tongala. So pretty much top two sides they're going to play in the next two weeks and this is where it'll work out, where Rumble are.

Speaker 1:

Now, if they lose, that's not to say, oh, you're not going to win them again, you just need to work harder and work harder on what the fundamentals were that made you lose. What was it? Was it your conversions on turnovers? Was it simple mistakes? Was it a consistent mistake? I mean it's not a mistake if it happens more than once.

Speaker 1:

If you consistently throw the ball out, miss your passes, maybe stop, maybe maybe the person running towards the ball to get that pass needs to think okay, am I going too quick, am I going too early, am I leading too early or am I not leading early enough? Know, netball is a fast-paced game where you need to be switched on and thinking all the time. Once you have a lapse of concentration, they're going to jump on it. Quality sides are going to jump on it. You need to look, you need to think you go. Okay, I led too early and put pressure on Next time, I know. You know, wait a couple of seconds, half a second and then lead. Or I led too late and I got an intercept on me, I didn't get to the ball quick enough. Just those things and reading that ball.

Speaker 1:

So I really feel, as I said, the next two weeks Rumble have had a great four weeks. You know they've been undefeated, they've played, I would say, mid-court or, you know, mid-ladder sides, except for Moema. Moema will play finals, but the rest of them Yumerka, kingutna and Echukian United they're mid-ladder sides. They're mid-ladder sides where they can either make the six or they won't make the six, it's entirely you know. So they're mid-ladder sides that are going to. They will probably, you know, they will do what they can to try and get into that top six. They will, you know, whatever they'll do, they could upset some sides, you know, and as the season goes on, so Rumble, they've beaten probably a top four side and they've beaten three mid-ladder sides.

Speaker 1:

These next two games are where it's going to be, where they think they're going to be. I mean, as I said, I think that they'll beat Denny, but it'll be by the barest of margin. It's going to be a cracking game. I thought Moama game was going to be crack. This is going to be a cracking game and in the following week, another cracking game. Then they come into a couple of sides, a bottom ladder size, which, if they lose it, helps them hone their skills again.

Speaker 1:

Um, but yeah, as I said, it's that. It's that conversion on turnovers. They need to convert from turnovers because they're just freebies. That just can't. They just can't be happy. You cannot, can if you don't convert on them. You're just giving your freebies, you're giving the opportunity to convert away. You need to capitalize on that. So anyway, that is, uh, me brett. Thank you for listening.

Speaker 1:

Um, that is a rundown on what's happened in the last four weeks for rumble, our football club's netball a-grade side. It's going to happen in the next two weeks. It's just going to be. It's going to be intense, it's going to be full on for them. Um, I think they're up for the challenge. There is some work to do. They need to keep the chat up. They need to keep that chat up to confuse the shooters, confuse the mid-courts, but they all need to work together, especially this week, to put pressure on Denny and stop them from pretty much shooting and then converting on your turnovers, okay. So thank you for listening again. This is another episode of Shooting From the Circle. I will, later on through the week, put up another podcast on a review of the Denny game as we get closer to it. But that's me, brett. Thank you again for listening and I'm out. Have a great weekend, have a great week and don't forget to tell somebody.
