Speaker 1:

Hey everybody, welcome back to another episode of Shooting from the Circle, a podcast all about the Rumballara Football Netball Club's A-grade side and a quest to win a premiership in 2024. I'm your host, brett. Thank you for listening. And today we're going to do a review of yesterday's game against Barooga. We're going to look at all the positives, we're going to look at the negatives, we're going to look at what of yesterday's game against Barooga. We're going to look at all the positives, we're going to look at the negatives, we're going to look at what could have been, what should have been, and, yeah, we'll discuss the game in detail. So let's go All right, so straight away. I did say in my preview that I was hoping it was going to be actually a 100-goal game, this game yesterday. Unfortunately it didn't happen. And no disrespect to Beruga. But hey everybody, it's Brett your host. And welcome back to another episode of shooting from the circle, a podcast all about the rumballara football netball club's a-grade side and a quest for a premiership in 2024. And today is a review of the game against baruga that was played yesterday in baruga. So, right from the bat, we're going to talk positives, we're going to talk negatives, we're going to talk what place stood out, how they played and everything else. So no further ado, let's go all right. So yesterday Rambalara went north over the border, through Cobram town, over the Murray, into a small town in Barooga. Barooga is a small town, as I said, on the other side of the Murray, of Cobram. They're best known for the Barooga Sporties Club, their golf courses, poker machines and yeah. So Rumbler took on the Barooga Hawks yesterday in A grade. I did say in my preview that I thought it was going to be actually a 100-goal game. I was wrong, and that's no disrespect to Baruga, but it wasn't their skill level that kept Rumballara from not shooting 100 goals. It was more Rumballara trying some things out. They had a bit of a play around with some things and whatever.

Speaker 1:

So yesterday, as I said, rumballara top of the table, undefeated, and Beruga, unfortunately, sitting on the bottom of the ladder. One win, one draw. It wasn't going to be a tight game, but all you expected was, hopefully that berug would come out with a bit of fight and, um, yeah, uh, unfortunately that didn't happen. Um, so the starting lineup for rumballara was sophie atkinson in goal attack. Wing attack was Nakai Bamblett. Sarah Thorpe was in center. Lani Atkinson was in wing defense, tiana Steele goal defense and Jesse Bamblett in goalkeeper. So that was the lineup. That was the lineup.

Speaker 1:

Through the course of the game, the lineup did change a bit, so and they were just trying some new things out. So, first quarter, as I said, you know, rumbler, they're averaging 64 goals a game and averaging 30 goals that they're keeping their opposition to. So, yeah, very big difference. And you know, whereas baruga, um, yeah, they've just been getting smashed each week. They're young side, so, um, obviously trying things, um, trying to get the best out of each person. So, yeah, probably for that, look, the game was. I'm not being smart or anything, but I think the game was close for the first two minutes. And then, yeah, unfortunately, rambalara, just absolutely yeah, they just smashed them out of the park. They really, yeah, beruga had no answers. They really, yeah, beruga had no answers. Rambalara. Just, they were too strong, too strong in defensive end, too strong in their center circle, in their midcourt, too strong in their shooting end as well, and pretty much Rambalara had. They did have a full side yesterday.

Speaker 1:

So Emily had come back from overseas. I think she only had about three, four hours sleep. Madika had come back. So Deeks has been off sick with her glands and she had a bit of a hammy problem, so she was back as well. They had Jorah sitting on the bench as well, so you had, yeah, three girls on the bench, which hasn't been that way for Rumballara, probably over the last, I don't know maybe three, four, maybe five weeks. So it was good to see that they were able to have those players on the bench. And it was good that Emily could come back On a game against Beruga, who's very low on the ladder, and she was able to, you know, run herself into a bit of touch because she hasn't played netball for five weeks, and also Medica as well.

Speaker 1:

So, as I said, the first two minutes, yeah, probably, yeah, it was, even if you can call it that. But then, yeah, rumbler, they got some turnovers. You know Beruga weren't shooting well, they were missing shots, and that was because of the defense of Tiana Steele and Jesse Bamblett. And, yeah, they just and just their rebound back through the midcourt. You know, looking sideways their 45s. You know you do get caught sometimes when you're playing those sort of sides. You get to sort of start playing their way of their brand of netball. It was scrappy, but yeah, once I got there, once I found their feet and Rumbelara were able to, yeah, sort of adjust and play their own game. Yeah, it was just more free-flowing for Rumbelara.

Speaker 1:

Jesse Barnes and Sophie Akerson were on song in that, um, shooting circle. They were just, you know, twin towers, tall towers. They were, um, yeah, they would that what either one of them was just yeah. So she is phenomenal, you know, from a long distance, she downtown, she can, yeah, she was just shooting the lights out and Jessie Barnes just grabbing those rebounds, like there was no tomorrow.

Speaker 1:

And, yeah, just that first quarter, they were just sinking the ball, sinking the ball, sinking the ball, rebounds. There was turnovers, there was intercepts by Tiana. Larnie was playing a great game in wing defence. Kai was playing a great game in wing attack. So when you've got Kai and you've got Sarah feeding that ball into the shooters, the defenders have got no way, they've got no hope, they have no way of defending, they have no way of trying to get an intercept. And, as I said, jessie Barnes, she was just demanding that ball. So she, just, she plays her role. She's there to support Jess. Well, pretty much, they're there to support each other.

Speaker 1:

So, yeah, the first quarter they just came out and went bang and to get a 100-goal game. You're looking at 25 goals a quarter. So unfortunately I fell two goals short. So it was at quarter time it was 23-2. Rumble as well. You pretty much say the game's over, you've got a 21 goal, 21 goal difference, right from the start. Right from the start they got 21 goals up and, yeah, they just pretty much the game's over.

Speaker 1:

Second quarter come and they made some changes, rumbelara. So Jessie Bamblett did say at start that she'd probably only play one quarter and she'd rest the rest of the game. So she came off. Sophie Atkinson actually moved from goal attack or goal shooter to goalkeeper and so her and Tiana were in the defensive circle. So Emily came on and immediately went into goal attack and immediately they had an impact and it was funny because Sophie's never played goalkeeper before. But, as I said, the quarter-time score was 23-2.

Speaker 1:

And then the second quarter, the ball would come down and Sophie just you know she was intercepting, she was stopping passes, her and Tiana were just intercept after intercept. Lani was continually on intercepting and I think Madika come on for Kai and her feed. There was a comment made had Madika and Jesse Barnes played together before and I think they had, because just Madika's vision into passing into Jess was just unbelievable. And you know I'm going to talk about it at the end of the game. I'm not going to talk about it now at the end of the podcast, but I'll talk about it, not now but at the end of the podcast about I did mention once before about umpiring and the fundamentals, and you know we've got to realize you're going to have biased umpires, but I'll mention it now.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and as I said, these are my views, these are only my views. This is my podcast. But yeah, the umpiring on one side was very biased. You know, poor old Jess and Soph in that first quarter and then emily in the second quarter, their goal defense. She was just, yeah, she was causing contact, she was pushing them around. She was, yeah, it was just the first quarter, um, they were just got belted but they weren't getting pulled up. So the goal defense yeah, the defensive um of baruga wasn't getting pulled up. So the goal defense, yeah, the defense of um of baruga wasn't getting pulled up.

Speaker 1:

The thing is, what happens is then they go down the other end where you've got an umpire that'll umpire the game properly, um, and all of a sudden they're getting pulled up. So they, she was getting pulled up for contact, she was getting pulled up all the time. She was getting pulled up going over the over the top of jess, she's getting pulled up going over the top of emily and, um, you know, just, these things were happening and you know, um, and she was getting agitated because down one end she wasn't getting pulled up and then the other end she was and she was just like, well, yeah, and that that that there, you know, causes grief because then all of a sudden it's a mix-up and you just causes, when you have an umpire that just doesn't umpire the game the way she sees it. And yeah, as I said, we need umpires. I'm not criticizing, but yeah, we just, yeah, we need consistency within the umpiring fraternity. So, yeah, second quarter yeah, soph, and that she moved the goalkeeper and Emily into goal attack and they complimented each other, her and Emily and Jess, and it was good to see Emily back getting a bit of touch and she also, yeah, she also went into wing attack and wing defence as well. So it was great to see Madika as well, and they were still moving the ball down. You know they were moving the ball down perfectly. Um, you'd have to say rambalara was just yeah and yeah, there was no pressure on the ball. There was no pressure from baruga, um, and I have seen them play all year and they've done it to quality, size as well as size of it sitting on the bottom of the ladder. So just their movement, their understanding and, as I said, yeah, defensively was just absolutely superstar.

Speaker 1:

Yesterday, lachiana and, as I said, jess came off. You had. Kai had a go at goal defense. As I said, soap had a go at goal defense or goalkeeper. So yeah, it was just their defense was just on song and you can tell by their score. So halftime score was 45 to 5. So pretty much 40-goal lead. At halftime the game was over, game was dead and buried and over. It was just a formality on how far uh rumble r can go. So yeah, they scored 23, 22 goals in that second quarter, with soph being in um in goalkeeper. They only conceded three goals. So soph has never been a defender in her life, but she only conceded three goals. So Safer's never been a defender in her life, but she only conceded three goals. Phenomenal effort.

Speaker 1:

And they come down to Lani as well. Lani, in that wing defense, she was picking off the ball, she was picking off the play, she was getting intercepts, she was getting taps causing turnovers, just their pressure. Yeah, brugge had no answer and, as I said, yeah, so halftime 45-5, and third quarter started, and something interesting at halftime was the goal defense for Brugge actually went out to the umpires and started to have a word to the umpires about and, as I said, one end, she was getting away with everything and that was her umpire, that was Beruga's umpire. The other end, she wasn't. You could blatantly see that she was causing contact. She was belting them around, belting the shooters around, pushing them around. That's not contesting, that's causing contact. And she just wasn't getting pulled up. And then all of a sudden it goes down the other end and she, you know she wasn't as clean as what she thought she was, so she was sort of having a bit of a word to the umpire.

Speaker 1:

So, uh, third quarter come along and yeah, so things changed up a bit. So, yeah, um, kai went into wing defense, alani come off. Emily came into wing attack. Um, and sarah was still in center. Um, tiana and and soph again, and yeah, oh sorry, emily stayed at goal, goal attack and um.

Speaker 1:

So the third quarter, yeah, rumble, I just did what they, what they were doing. The first two quarters they just, um, dominated play. It didn't matter who played where they were actually yeah, it was, they were dominating everywhere. They went um and, poor old Beruga, they had no answers. They really, really did not have any answers to how they were going to stop Jess Barnes. You know Soph would go back in the shooting and they decided then well, you know we're going to Kai went into goal defense with Tiana, but they decided to double-team Jess Barnes and it just didn't work, because double-teaming Jess it just leaves Sophie open and she was just getting the ball. As I said, she was shooting them from long range. It was creating probably more headaches for them by double teaming than what it would if they just had a one-on-ones. But, yeah, that was just unfortunate the way it was.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the center, the mid-court for Rambalara was just so strong, as I said, having all the girls back and Dura's going to be sitting on the bench now, and unfortunately, yes, she didn't get to get on, but hopefully, yeah, she played a full game of B-grade, so hopefully next week they play Kengapna. Hopefully she'll get on, show her wares, because she's got a beautiful leap on her. She's a beautiful kid. Um, yeah, the whole bunch of girls who play a grade are just so for one another. They just they, they do it for each other. Um, and you can see that yesterday, yeah, they were still, even though they were 40 odd goals up, they were still, yeah, let's go, let's go. Roma, come on, let's go. And you know, roma, come on, let's go. Tiana was talking to the girls and she's given them encouragement. Jessie Barnes was giving them encouragement. Jess Bamlett didn't come back on, so she coached from the sidelines. She was giving encouragement. Madika, come on, and she was wing attack and she'd go to centre.

Speaker 1:

They were just in that third quarter. Yeah, they made some changes, some rolling subs and that and um, there was just there was no answer for baruga. There was none, none whatsoever. Um, so three quarter time, um, jesse barnes was just shooting the lights out, she was just shooting house down, so was soph defensively, they were just on song and yeah, they just poor old Baruga, just they could not get past the defensive end. They tried a few girls in that shooting circle and it just wasn't working. So, yeah, rambalara on top again. They shot another 21 goals.

Speaker 1:

So, as I said, they shot 23 in the first quarter, they shot 22 in the second quarter, they shot 21 in the third quarter. So they weren't going to get to 100, which was unfortunate because I was really hoping they would. But you know, how does that affect the Brugge girls? Well, at the end of the day, I really think if Rumble R hadn't changed their sides around, had kept the same side like they did at the first quarter and maybe just rotated through the midfield, the midcourt, I think I'm positive they would have got to 100 goals.

Speaker 1:

But, as I said, three-quarter time score was 66 to 8. It was nearly 60 goals in front. Yeah, what's that? That's 59 goals in front or 58 goals in front about three quarter time? Um, yeah, if you had the um, yeah, if, yeah, you could have just turned around. It's a nut, but let's just finish it off now. Finish it off. That's not playing. But you know, burger, to their credit, they come back out, uh, in the fourth quarter. And you know they fought tooth and nail.

Speaker 1:

Um, and again, you know we talk about umpires and everything else, and there was a couple of incidents in the last quarter that I was a bit amused about, bemused, amused. I was just flabbergasted, to be honest, that this could happen. So I brought another shooter on, I made a comment that she looked very timid. She was just standing there, she was clapping when um rumbler getting some goals and, um, she was starting. Yeah, and the unfortunate thing, I guess, is, you know, um janice deal, you know she's played around a fair while and um, you know, I overheard a few people, you know they, they, some people, some, some players fear her.

Speaker 1:

They, they feel that she's intimidating and everything else. Yeah, she had a, she had a bit of a record when she was at the shep swans, um, for, yeah, not intimidating people, but she's a very hard nut when it comes to defending and she won't take no shit. That's pretty much what it is, um. So this young shooter yesterday thought that she'd probably see how far she can go with tiana. So, and the funny thing was and to tiana's credit, she sort of just laughed it off and that but, uh, on numerous occasions, uh, channel's defending her and channel was taller than her, so she was defending and as she was going to shoot the ball, he would actually grab sienna's hand and push it away.

Speaker 1:

And Tiana's looking at the umpire, going well, that's contact, she's contacting me, she's pushing my arm away. And it happened a couple of times or a few times, and Tiana did question look at the umpire, and unfortunately it's the same umpire that let their goal defense actually just barrel through Rambalara shooters and goal attack in the first quarter or in the second quarter, whatever it was. And she, yeah, the umpire would just look and she'd just walk away. And Tiana said to her. She said, hey, she's pushing my hand away. And we were sitting there watching and we're like what's going on and notice it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so when tiana was defending and tiana's tiana's a tall defender when she defends she's got a massive reach on her. She was actually shooting and with one hand and, yeah, you've got three seconds. You know the law. The rule is three seconds across the court, not five seconds as a shooter, not whatever. But you got three seconds as a shooter and she had enough time to try and aim fake a couple of times.

Speaker 1:

Then she was physically touching Tiana and pushing her arm away and it got to the point where after a while she was grabbing the ball and doing an arc and trying to push Tiana. And then she turned around to Tiana and she said oh, you're defending the um, you're defending my face. I can't see. And jenny goes. Well, no, I'm not, it's just that you're too short.

Speaker 1:

Um, yeah, she and the umpire would just look and she just let it go. Um, and I thought to myself hang on, I've never seen that. I've never seen a shooter grab a defender's arm and push it away while she was trying to defend. I've never seen it. Um, I don't think I'll ever see it again. I don't know. I I have no idea. I'm gonna ask yeah, I know some umpires, netball umpires, and I'm gonna ask them you know, is that contact on a shooter? Um, yeah, just theoretically, hypothetically, yeah, I'm not going to mention the game enough. I'm just going to say, hey, look, if you've got a defender defending and the goal shooter actually grabs the defender's arm and pushes it away, is that contact? And I'll just find out, because she was not getting pulled up for it.

Speaker 1:

And then she started to be a bit mouthy to tiana and telling her that you know she was defending her face and not the ball. And Chana said well, you're too. You know pretty much, you're too short, but anyway, so the last quarter, yeah, rambalara mixed it up a bit more, but you know, you had Soph and Jesse Barnes in that shooting circle again and, as I said, they were double teaming. Jess, they were really really double teaming jess, they were really really double teaming and they were they'll they'll being physical and just barns is, she's not the one to be physical on um because she could be physical back she, yeah, she's very much, you know, like for like match for match. You, you physically you've been physical on her. She'll be physical back on you.

Speaker 1:

And yeah, I just think that you know they trying to double team her, it just didn't work. I just felt that, yeah, they just it didn't work and Soph was left on her own and that just helped them didn't work and soph was left on her own and that just helped them. Um, so at the end of the, at the end of the game um, the score was, yeah, like rumballara shot another 19 goals um 19 goals to they shot four. So 19 to four, so sort of a drop in the last quarter for rambalara. But I mean, yeah, they had some personnel that changed and yeah, as I said, emily got back on, madika got back on um and yeah, it just. They were just um on song yesterday and beruga being, yeah, they are, they were a um lowly lower side, but yeah, it was just. It was just an opportunity for Rumballara to try things. And yeah, it was a physical game, which was unnecessary, but, as I said, it was unwise.

Speaker 1:

Now, the positive out of it was that each girl was able to fill a spot and play that role. They were able to fill a spot, play that role. They were able to fill a spot, play the role and they played it the way that person that normally plays it would play and they got success out of it. Yeah, they were able to swap. As I said, emily went into goal attack. Madika was just superb in that wing attack when she came on, just that feed into Jess, sophie and Tiana in goalkeeper and, uh, goal defense and they were laughing. It was like they'd um and they were just like they were laughing and they were carrying on and and, yeah, I don't think they could too, they could play there all the time, because I think they're just, yeah, they're just laughing. No disrespect to Baruga, that's just the way they are. They were enjoying what they were doing. So, yeah, so the positives are that they can turn around and play anywhere they want and they play it with the same gusto as they play their normal position. So any of those mid-quarters can come in and they can go into defense, they can go into shooting, which is what jesse bamblett wanted.

Speaker 1:

Um, it wasn't too many negatives. Probably the negatives are some of the girls would, when they're going for the ball were, you know, one-handed, and jess would turn around, say two hands, you got to get your two hands, you got to get your two hands, get the ball with two hands. Their transitions through the thing, and jess has set them some goals and they've got their own personal goals and I think they're working on them. Yesterday so it was, yeah, it was a game that was all over in the first quarter and you know they've increased what they were doing. So with the ladder, as I said, rumble are are pretty much on top.

Speaker 1:

But if you go for the full, you go for the fours and against. Well, at the moment they're leading the four. So they've shot 728 goals in 11 matches. Um, closest is moama 643. So they're now after. Yeah, it's just what's that? 80 goals, 80 goals in front. They're against. So the goals least scored against them is 365. They're just behind Moema, which is 370. Well, actually they're leading now they are leading the fours and against gents. So a very well-rounded side.

Speaker 1:

Rambalara, very, very much defensively and offensively great all across the midcourt as well. So yeah, so that was a game yesterday against Baruga. It was a game you'd expect. They got flogged Baruga just trying to ruffle Rambalara's feathers. It didn't work. They were very much settled in it. So girls played. It didn't matter where they played. Emily played a great game. Lani played a fantastic game in wing defence. Kai played a great game. Sarah, as always stored in that centre, she was just absolutely massive. Jesse Barnes shot the house down. Chana Steele defended like a champion.

Speaker 1:

They've got I said it once before you can have a champion team or you can have a team full of champions, and they've got a team full of champions. So they've got Kengapna this week. So it'll be interesting to see how they go against Kengapna. They tarred them up by 28 goals last time, so it'll be interesting to see how they go against Kengapna. They tarred them up by 28 goals last time, so it'll be interesting to see. As he's at home, they play all their games at home now for the rest of the year, so it'll be interesting to see how they go. They've got a couple of hard games coming into the finals so, yeah, they are sending the rounds now heading into finals. Jess Bamber said yesterday that they need to start really concentrating on what they're going to do for finals because, yeah, she doesn't want to lose it and it looks like at the moment I don't think anyone can beat them. But anything can happen.

Speaker 1:

So that is yesterday's game against Baruga, where the final score was let's have a look, I got out of it. Final score was let's have a look, I got out of it. Final score was, yeah, 81 to 12. So final score 81 to 12. An absolute demolition of Baruga, yes, at Baruga. So Rumbelara on song. That is me, brett, I'm out. Thank you very much for listening. Have a great weekend. I'll do a preview on uh Tuesday of the Congup in the game. I'm going to hope to have some interviews as well. Um, but yeah, the question now is who is going to stop Rumballara and this uh Rampaging Rumballara? This juggernaut, who, who, who has got the balls to step in and and play rumble at their own game? Personally, I don't think anyone has, but we will see over the period of the next six to seven weeks. So that is me, brett. Again, thank you for listening. Um, I'll have the preview on tuesday. Have a great weekend and be safe. I'm out. Bye.

Rumbalara Dominates Game Against Baruga
