What can parents do when the school fails to teach reading?
Jun 03, 2024 Season 1 Episode 7
Kristy Haworth

When the school fails to teach your child to read after having them in their care for 5 years straight, that's 200 weeks or 1,400 days - you do something different.

Kids that fail to learn to read are being taught to read by guessing and memorising. No matter how much time and effort we put in to helping them read using this approach, it is futile. It will not produce results.

Tegan found that out the hard way after her bright and bouncy grade 3 son was suddenly failing English and noticing that everyone around him was reading but he still didn't know how.  Repetitively let down by the system, Tegan went in search for answers and found them.

Listen to how Tegan turned everything around for her son, to the point where he now loves learning how to read and spell and is progressing like never before.

Check out the program that Tegan is using to educate herself and teach her child to read with success.

I loved listening! I was thinking the whole time, she is singing my song and this is where we are heading if I just let things play out. I know there is something not right, some deficiency but I just cannot nail it. But at the same time I just really don’t know what path to take. His teacher is beautiful and is doing a brilliant job but she can’t put her finger on it either. She thinks it’s processing. He always looks like he isn’t engaging in verbal instruction but when asked to repeat it back, gets it! He is doing ok at school but it’s prep! Listening to you, made me realise that we can’t just settle for ok when I know there is something amiss.

Good on you for pushing out of your comfort zone. Tegan because there would be so many people who listen to you (I spoke to so many parents as a teacher and through tutoring that were in the same boat) who now know where to turn!"
