Bat Country Sobriety Podcast: What Is The Kindling Effect?
Apr 21, 2024 Season 1 Episode 7
Stu

Kindling is the name given to the phenomenon in which the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal become exponentially more severe every time a person experiences them.

It’s a little known but clinically proven fact that alcohol withdrawal has a compounding effect: it’s worse every time, and every time it takes less alcohol to trigger more intense symptoms. The more you do it, the harder it gets, and the more likely it becomes that it’s going to happen again. And again.

That’s because one of the by-products of repeated acute alcohol withdrawal is, frankly, brain damage. In particular, it can affect the centres of the brain responsible for emotional regulation, impulse control, and decision making. The more you relapse, the more likely you are to relapse.

In this podcast, I talk about why that is and what it means for your recovery.
