“When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered. And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples. Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, ‘Whom are you seeking?

“They answered Him, ‘Jesus of Nazareth.’

“Jesus said to them, ‘I am He.’ And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them. Now when He said to them, ‘I am He,’ they drew back and fell to the ground” (John 18:1-6).

Morning by Morning, August 14 - Power in the Voice of Jesus

Good morning, Lord Jesus. I speak out Your name as I begin my day--“the name which is above every name” (Philippians 2:9); and I listen for Your voice, for “(Your) sheep hear (Your) voice ... and follow (You)” (John 10:27). ...

As I wait upon the leading of Your Holy Spirit this morning, an image from Scripture comes to mind of the night they arrested You in the garden and the power of Your words that knocked them off their feet and down to the ground at the sound of Your voice:

There’s power in Your name! There’s power in Your voice!

Just the words of Your voice knocked the soldiers to the ground. And one day, just the declaration of Your name will cause every knee to bow and every tongue to confess that You are Lord:

“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11).

I bow my knees and my heart before You today, “to the glory of God the Father.” In humility before You, with my heart open wide toward You, I declare You are “Lord” of my life and “Lord” of every moment of my day. For You are “Lord of all!” (Acts 10:36)

For You to be “Lord,” means I’m not. For You to be “Lord,” means You’re in control, You’re in charge, You’re taking the lead, Your word is what goes, Your will is to be done, as I trust You and Your ways, surrender my will to Yours, all of my days--as best as I can and all by Your grace.

So just speak Your word. Let the sound of Your voice penetrate and saturate my life today. Let everything less fall back and be knocked to the ground--in me and all around me. For “All authority has been given to (You) in heaven and on earth”--here in my heart and here in my world (Matthew 28:18).

There’s power in Your voice. There’s power in Your words. There’s power in the name of Jesus! In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
