“Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, Command Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the law of the burnt offering: The burnt offering shall be on the hearth upon the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it. And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen trousers he shall put on his body, and take up the ashes of the burnt offering which the fire has consumed on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar. Then he shall take off his garments, put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place. And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not be put out. And the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it; and he shall burn on it the fat of the peace offerings. A fire shall always be burning on the altar; it shall never go out” (Leviticus 6:8-13).

Morning by Morning, September 23, 2024 - The Consuming Fire that “Shall Never Go Out”

Good morning, Lord Jesus. Let Your peace fill my heart as I wait and listen for the leading of Your Spirit in the first moments of my morning (Philippians 4:7). ...

All of the Law and the Prophets of the Word of God are ultimately fulfilled in You (Matthew 5:17). One of those Laws of the Old Testament priesthood that foreshadowed Your fulfillment was “the Law of the Burnt Offering”:

You are our Burnt Offering--our sacrificial Lamb of Atonement (1 John 2:2), “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29). And just as “the fire on the altar” shall forever burn and “never go out,” so are our hearts to burn with passion in worship and prayer and adoration of You and “never go out.”

Just as the priests were to “burn wood on (the altar) every morning,” so You draw us near to You every morning to burn our wood of worship in the communion of prayer. And Your Spirit is the Fire that consumes our offering and reminds us of all You’ve done for us through the eternal Sacrifice of Your Love and Your Life on behalf of every one of us.

This morning, and every morning, and throughout the moments of my day, I offer the wood of my worship to be consumed in Your Fire that will never go out.

“For our God is a Consuming Fire” (Hebrews 12:29). By the power of the grace of God,  may my heart be consumed with a burning fire for You, filled with gratitude and praise for the consuming Sacrifice of Your Love for me, that “shall never go out.” In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
