Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Skip Monty.

Speaker 2:

All right, everybody. Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Welcome. Are you in need or if you're like my wife, you like to change rooms around after a while? Is the kitchen getting a little stale? The cabinets? Do you need somebody to be your handyman to help work on plumbing furniture problems? Today might be your lucky day because I have the pleasure of introducing your neighbor. Lucky day because I have the pleasure of introducing your neighbor, and with Bill Godfrey who is the owner of Nucleus Interiors. Welcome to the show, hey good to be here.

Speaker 2:

All right. Well, we're really, really excited to have you here. My wife would be really excited to hear what you have to say, because she would love to blow our kitchen up and start over again. I do a lot of kitchens.

Speaker 3:

Do what I do a lot of kitchens.

Speaker 2:

You do a lot of kitchens, I bet you do. Well, we're very excited to hear about what you do, so why don't you just tell us a little bit about your business?

Speaker 3:

Well, we're a full-service home repair company. We don't really like to consider ourselves as a handyman. I think there's plenty of those around the tri-cities um to take care of a lot of the small things. We do a lot of small jobs too, but we uh we focus on just doing home repair, which consider kind of covers a lot of remodeling, mostly do modeling projects. Uh, we, I like to do a lot of basement remodels. We do a lot of bathrooms and kitchens.

Speaker 3:

Like I said, um, I get a lot of calls for doing bathroom remodels, which usually covers tile work and bathtub replacements, things like that. Um, we go in and do a lot of the things that well, a lot of people have stayed busy and we get a lot of calls where people can't handle it because they're just too busy, too wrapped up. Um, we get a lot of the trickle-down jobs and other people that, like I said, are too too busy to handle the jobs themselves. Um, they usually come to us um not to say that we don't get some of the front end work too. We get a lot of the first calls too. We specialize in the remodeling areas. We do decks and about everything.

Speaker 3:

We do decks.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm currently rebuilding my deck. I'm currently rebuilding my deck. Right now I'll replace a couple boards a day when I have 20 minutes to get out there and work on it. So yeah, I might be calling you soon.

Speaker 3:

Oh yeah, that sounds good.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so how did you get into this business, bill?

Speaker 3:

I kind of stumbled into it. Actually, back when I was a teenager I started out as a helper with a fellow that lived down the street from me and just kind of picked it up from there and went from one job to the next. I was working for different tradesmen in the area where I grew up over near the Outer Banks in North Carolina. Then, working with so many people over the years, I just kind of branched out and decided I was going to go into it for myself, started my company, which wasn't this name. When I started I did a lot of trim work, interior trim working, for people who did turnkey. We started from the ground up and we dug the footings for them and did everything all the way through their home, all the way up to put my last nail in the roof.

Speaker 3:

Um, so a lot you know from doing all phases of the construction process. So, um, I started my own business back in 86 in carolina and um just transferred here. Back in 95, when I moved here, or 92. Yeah, 95, sorry, but worked for somebody out here for a couple of years and then went into business for myself in 2000. Back when they had the Y2K scare, things got a little slow and I just kind of ventured out on my own because the guy I was working for had no work. I kind of just struck it on my own, just took a chance and been going stronger, all right well, obviously, it's definitely worked for you, and so you're pushing almost 25 years as yours, yes, 2000.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, very good. So are there any myths or misconceptions in your industry that you can think of?

Speaker 3:

one of the biggest is don't rely on YouTube to be your guide for doing everything. Not everybody can do the things that I do and a lot of people will admit that too. They think they can do them. Then once they start, they end up calling me in the end and don't believe that everybody else can do the things either. I get a lot of callbacks from people who had somebody go in their home and do the work and they either botch it up or they don't complete it. I get a tremendous amount of calls on that end. You know where people just they weren't satisfied with the contract that they hired or they got cheated or something. But I go in and take care of the job and try to do it right, treat people fairly and give them a good price, and it pays off in the end.

Speaker 2:

That makes all the difference in the world Absolutely.

Speaker 3:

So outside of work, what do you do for fun? I play bass guitar and I was in a band for a while but kind of gave it up. But I still enjoy sitting around playing my music. What kind of bass do?

Speaker 2:

you have? What kind of bass do you?

Speaker 3:

have, it's a Jackson Charvel.

Speaker 2:

Oh, wow, okay, Very good, is that a five-string?

Speaker 3:

I have a few different basses. I have a Precision, so I have a 5-string as well. So yeah, I have a little variation on my playing styles.

Speaker 2:

There you go. Well, my brother was an incredible bass player, major Rush fan kind of guy, you know. So let's change gears. But so let's change gears. Can you think of one hardship or life challenge that you rose above?

Speaker 3:

and can now say because of it you're better and stronger, probably on the financial end, just trying to stay afloat with the business, really relying on the jobs to keep me going through the years, starting out from scratch, relying on nothing but you know my own reputation to keep me going and from that just building, actually moving here from North Carolina with pretty much my own skills.

Speaker 3:

That was a challenge in itself because I had to move out here not knowing anyone and my wife's family was from here. That's the reason I moved from Carolina to here and that was one of the biggest challenges was getting to know everybody and creating my own reputation and I've done well with that over the years. Being in business for as long as I have here, that speaks volumes for it in itself, I believe, because to be able to stay in business that long for any one company to stay in business that long you have to have a good reputation and by building that reputation it allows me to succeed and and I have, I have no, I have no regrets looking back. You know as far as what I've done with myself and my business. I have tons of customers that you know give me good references all the time.

Speaker 2:

That's awesome. It sounds like you've been very successful. So is there one thing that, what, the what's, the one thing that you would like for our listeners to remember about nucleus interiors?

Speaker 3:

My phone number.

Speaker 2:

OK, what's that?

Speaker 3:

My phone number. Give me a call. I'm sure I can help you out. Just word of mouth is the best advertiser for me. You know, just if you need someone to do basement remodels, kitchen remodels, bathrooms, feel free to give me a call. Look up my references, my website. You can go on there and look at some of my work. I also have a Facebook page, like most people do anymore. I've got pictures of all my work Not all of my work, but a big majority of it. You can look at it and look at my customer reviews on google. Um, and just keep in mind that, um, you know, we are a licensed, bonded insured and we take pride in our work and we do a very good job for everyone awesome now, and what is that website?

Speaker 2:

It's nucleusinteriorscom.

Speaker 3:

Pretty simple.

Speaker 2:
