All right, everybody, welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. I hope everybody's doing well. We've got an incredibly special guest today on the Good Neighbor Podcast. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your neighbor, Mr John Hensley, with ProShields Ex Neighbor podcast. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your neighbor, Mr John Hensley, with ProShields Exteriors. John, welcome to the show.

Speaker 3:

Good morning, skip, thanks for having me.

Speaker 2:

Yes, sir, glad to have you. So I know a lot of our listeners are really excited to learn all about you and what you do with your company, with ProShields Exterior. So if you don't mind, just tell us a little bit about your business.

Speaker 3:

We do residential and commercial roofing. We also do pretty much anything exterior, such as custom decks, hardy vinyl siding, garages, room additions, sunrooms. We do pretty much everything.

Speaker 2:

So on the exterior of the house, Wow, so siding and decks, just about anything.

Speaker 3:

Yes, sir.

Speaker 2:

John, how did you get involved in this business to begin with?

Speaker 3:

Well, when I was a kid growing up, my dad was in the construction business. He owned his own remodeling business. So I kind of grew up in the business and my brothers and sisters stayed with a family business. But I learned at a young age that blood and money don't mix sometimes. So my dad encouraged me. He said you know, amen brother so my dad encouraged me.

Speaker 2:

You know you can do your own thing, you know. So that's kind of how it started.

Speaker 3:

Oh wow. So your dad was in construction work like builder? Yes, he owned a remodeling business too, as I was growing up.

Speaker 2:

Yes, oh, ok, well, you're walking in his footsteps. Still, you're just a little more specialized.

Speaker 3:

It sounds like yes, absolutely yes, footsteps still, you're just a little more specialized it sounds like yes, absolutely yes, John.

Speaker 2:

Are there any myths or misconceptions in the exterior business?

Speaker 3:

There are, just like with anything, I'm sure A lot of people think that they can't afford it or that there's people out there that they're working with that they can't trust, and that is true at times. We do see that as far as people not doing what they say they're going to do and that type of thing. But there's a lot of good people in this business, in this industry, so it's kind of a misconception. But after people work with a good company, it eases their minds and they see that that wasn't true.

Speaker 2:

Well, unfortunately, a lot of news television stations do this investigative reporting locally and the only thing they ever report on it was somebody pardon me is not happy with work that they had done, and so those people get a lot of publicity when in fact, like in a lot of industries, there's a lot of good people that are trustworthy, and I guess which makes uh, word of mouth advertising people understanding that you're, you are trustworthy, is is is so important absolutely that's true.

Speaker 3:

We do about 80 percent of what we do from referral.

Speaker 2:

So really, and I bet you probably, I've interviewed other uh construction type work uh businesses and a lot of them say a lot of the work that they do is from other vendors that didn't do such a hot job.

Speaker 3:

That's true. Yes, we have to come in there and tear it all back down and do it right.

Speaker 2:

So and do it right. Well, that's what's important, is that you do it right, and that's what sets you apart from your competitors. Outside of work, john, what do you personally like to do for fun?

Speaker 3:

My wife and I like to travel. I'm a big Indy racing car fan so we like going to races and you know we just travel a lot, you know, when we have time, so that's kind of what we do.

Speaker 2:

Well, I love. I love travel, and, but IndCars is new to me, so are you originally from Indianapolis?

Speaker 3:

No, no, I'm not. I've just always been a big fan, ever since I was a little kid.

Speaker 2:

NASCAR too, or just Indy.

Speaker 3:

NASCAR too. Yes, yes, absolutely.

Speaker 2:

Gotcha. Well, let's switch gears just a little bit, John. Could you describe a hardship or a life challenge that you personally overcame and how it's made you stronger in the end? Does anything come to?

Speaker 3:

mind yes 2020. Yes 2020. When COVID happened and everything kind of stopped, it was pretty devastating for all of us, everyone. We didn't know what was going to happen with our businesses, we didn't know where this was going to go. But after about three weeks you've got a husband and wife sheltering at home and they start seeing things they want to get done to their home and our business exploded. It exploded and it was a blessing in disguise, I guess, for if you can take something good out of something that bad, you know it was a pretty horrific time in America, but in the construction industry at least I can speak to, it really took off. Well, I guess that meant Go ahead.

Speaker 2:

I'm sorry.

Speaker 3:

We were busy before that happened, but after you know, and then it was just, it was unbelievable.

Speaker 2:

Well, I guess it makes sense that people were sheltering at home and all of a sudden they're looking around. I mean, I can tell you, I painted my entire, the entire interior of my house during that time, right, because my wife was like you know, we probably need to paint, right? Yep, and it goes from. It went from room to room you know well, we just need to paint this room, everything else is fine, and then, by the end of it, the entire house has been yes, so anyway well that's good.

Speaker 2:

That's good for your business. Has business? Has that continued after COVID?

Speaker 3:

Yes, it has. It really really has. It's been a blessing.

Speaker 2:

So awesome, awesome. Well, john, if there, if there would be one thing that you would want our listeners to remember about you and or Pro Shields Exteriors, what would that be?

Speaker 3:

We really take pride in what we do. I love what I do. We really take pride in what we do. I love what I do. You know, it's kind of like being an artist when you can go build a custom deck on someone's house or you do some type of remodel and we realize that when the job's complete, the customer's happy and we run off into the sunset with that final payment, our name is still on that property. It's on that project. It represents you who and what you are and what you can do. So that's really where we stand and that's our motto quality every time. So we really strive to take care of everything as it needs to be.

Speaker 2:

Well, you're right. I mean your name is on that and that's going to grow your business in the future. It could do one of two things that could either help you or hurt you, and so that's right. Quality is there. It's going to help you Very good, very good. Well, how can? Can anyone listen to our podcast? Learn more about ProShield Exteriors.
