Welcome to the second episode of Rebuilding The Village with your host, Michael Read. Today we explore the societal and personal impacts of spirituality and community with guest RH “Bob” Martin, a former lawyer for the mob in Miami who transformed his life through Taoism, Buddhism, and Christianity.

Bob discusses his transformative journey through Taoism, Buddhism, and Christianity, underscoring their relevance in addressing modern challenges such as relationship issues and personal disconnection caused by declining spiritual practices. We also emphasize the importance of spiritual guidance and community support, and explore the impact of collective action in community efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic and advocates for prioritizing face-to-face interactions over the distortions of social media.

Tune in and gain practical insights into fostering genuine human connections and navigating today's challenges with resilience and compassion.

Bob's life has been a diverse journey through careers as a football player, prosecutor, social worker, therapist, columnist, and mindfulness teacher, alongside exploring Taoism, Buddhism, and Christianity. Despite a challenging childhood, including trauma and bullying, he found strength in the belief of being loved by something greater. This belief guided him through law school, a turbulent career in Miami, and a transformative retreat advised by his therapist, leading to his study under a Taoist master. Settling in North Carolina, he transitioned from law to social work and meditation teaching. Now in his 70s, Bob teaches at Elon University, coordinating mindfulness programs and enjoying a harmonious life with his wife, blending their spiritual paths and shared values of kindness and service.
