Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a family and obesity medical clinic? Surprisingly, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to your neighbor, stephen Kim, with One2Wellness Family and Obesity Medicine. Stephen, how are you today?

Speaker 3:

Doing well. Thank you for having me on today.

Speaker 2:

Of course it's my pleasure. We're excited to learn all about you and your business. Tell us a little bit about your company.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so One2Wellness is a medical clinic. Our primary focus is on health and wellness and the areas that we'd like to, I guess, put a lot of our energy into is addressing obesity and, of course, the conditions associated with obesity, and of course, a lot of people associate the big three, like high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes, but, of course, other issues associated with that too.

Speaker 2:

And how did you get into this business?

Speaker 3:

Well, my background originally was family medicine, so a lot of it was focused on primary care and treating the whole family from, I guess, from a young age to you know geriatrics and so forth. However, the primary goal was treating the condition like diabetes, cholesterol and blood pressure. But I wanted to take a step further and try to address it, either a little bit before he got there or in a way that it could address multiple things. So that's why I took the liberty of pursuing a little bit more education, getting board certified in obesity medicine. That way we could understand just the how it causes the other conditions and maybe approaching it in a more comprehensive way. That way you can address all those issues.

Speaker 2:

And what are the myths or misconceptions in your industry?

Speaker 3:

Yes. So you know I'm glad a lot of people are waking up to this a little bit more. But you know you've heard the traditional myth or misconception that obesity, being overweight, is a lack of discipline, People who can't control their eating, or it's not, people who don't exercise enough. Now, I'm not refuting that those problems didn't lead to obesity. However, once you get to a certain state of obesity, the traditional ways to treat it don't work as well. So I want to get to individuals who have passed that certain point that it is not just those simple things, that I just need to eat a little bit better and I need to exercise more.

Speaker 2:

Okay, and outside of work, what do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

Oh, outside of work, I love sports. I'm a big football fan. I grew up, raised and born in Atlanta, so I am a Falcons fan. However, I am a Texas transplant, so I do support the Dallas Cowboys. I think their management's a little bit questionable but I do support them and I'm very, very active in my son's sports like hockey.

Speaker 2:

Okay, let's go ahead and change gears for a second. Can you describe one hardship or life challenge that you personally rose above and can now say because of it, you're better and stronger? When I say that for you, what comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

Yes, so I guess I can try to bring up an example more recent. You know, becoming a physician and going into practicing medicine, one of the hardships is trying to balance patient happiness and their health and, as you may have probably realized, that when a patient comes to me and trying to make them happy doesn't always equate to the healthy choices. So there has been a lot of challenges where patients are not very happy with the way I say it, the way I recommend. So I had to adjust and adapt to a way that it is in a way that they can understand that the intent is not trying to make them happy, but doing it in a way that is courteous and professional is always something that we strive for, but I'm trying to make the choices that will make them healthy. So the hardship is that happiness doesn't always equate to healthiness.

Speaker 2:

Okay, and what is the number one cause of obesity?

Speaker 3:

I would say that is a moving target and a lot of I would call it controversy, but still a topic that people discuss. But in terms of simplifying it, I would say a large part of it is diet and unfortunately, in the society we live in, I hate to point it to one food group or one part, but a lot of it is processed foods and that can go into meats, refined sugars and, unfortunately, the way that we consume it, our body registers in an unusual way where it changes the chemistry, the internal biology. Where we need more of it, our weight goes up and then, of course, it predisposes or increases our risk for those other conditions like the big three that we mentioned, which is diabetes, cholesterol and high blood pressure risk for those other conditions like the big three that we mentioned which is diabetes, cholesterol and high blood pressure.

Speaker 2:

And, Stephen, please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about One2Wellness family and obesity medicine.

Speaker 3:

Well, when you do come to our clinic, what we try to strive for is that we want to approach it in a comprehensive way where we don't just give you a medication and then say, come back one month. We try to address what brought you to this point. We do a comprehensive workup where we don't do labs. We also try to do a body analysis, because one of the things that when you lose weight it's just not a number on the scale. We want you to focus on the important things of weight loss and that is fat usually, and when you want to put people on weight loss journeys, they lose not just the fat part, they lose a lot of the muscles. So that's not a healthy weight loss. So we try to comprehend some approach where we analyze your body in addition to the medications, if necessary, and then the lifestyle modifications.

Speaker 2:

So that way, when you do come here, we want you to have a weight loss journey that is healthy and sustainable, and how can our listeners learn more about One2Wellness family and obesity medicine?

Speaker 3:

Well, we are located on, you know, in the Plano area, so you can look us up. But if you also do a research for board certified obesity physicians, I am listed under there and of course you can do it under Google search and we can always send a link to you. That way you can disperse it to the listener. So we have multiple ways that you can get in touch with us.

Speaker 2:

Well, Steven, I really appreciate you being on the show. We wish you and your clinic the best moving forward.

Speaker 3:

Thank you so much, suvet, I appreciate it.
