Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sophia Yvette.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of a wellness center? Surprisingly, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to your neighbor, Dr Hill, with Ketamine Health and Wellness Center of Texas. Dr Hill, how are you doing today?

Speaker 3:

Fine Thanks for having me on the show, Sophia.

Speaker 2:

Of course. Of course. We're excited to learn all about you and your business. Tell us a bit about Ketamine Health and Wellness Center.

Speaker 3:

Well, the Ketamine Health and Wellness Center has been a part of the Plano community in Frisco and reaches out to a broad reach in our neighboring communities and even people outside the state. So ketamine is an anesthetic drug and it's been around since 1970. But it's kind of found a repurpose outside of the operating room. So we anesthesiologists will use it to induce sleep or anesthesia for patients, but outside of the operating room, in a clinical setting that we have in our center, it's used to treat patients who suffer from depression and anxiety and postpartum depression and PTSD and even certain chronic pain syndromes like fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, complex regional pain syndrome and other types of neuropathy, even patients who suffer with suicidal ideation.

Speaker 3:

And today, while I was in the operating room earlier I was reading an article where the Surgeon General has declared like stress and anxiety being very prevalent even in parents today, and not only our teenagers but parents are having an increase in stress and anxiety. And so ketamine is a drug that really helps with that process, basically by creating new neurons in the brain where stress has caused a deterioration of those neurons. And also ketamine helps to increase a molecule called brain-derived neurotropic factor. It's a big name but basically BDNF or brain derived neurotropic factor elevates one's mood, and that's what ketamine does. It's kind of pretty much revolutionized the way we treat depression and anxiety in our culture today.

Speaker 2:

And how did you get into this business?

Speaker 3:

Actually, about seven years ago, I was actually out to lunch with a colleague and we both brought this up the potential to do ketamine because we both had read it in a magazine article which said ketamine clinics proliferate as anesthesiologists take lead, clinics proliferate as anesthesiologists take lead, and so we both said we would get together. But he ended up forming another clinic with another colleague and I formed the Ketamine Health and Wellness Center of Texas on March 1st 2017.

Speaker 2:

And what are the myths or misconceptions in your industry? I'm sure there's a lot.

Speaker 3:

Well, in view of the recent Matthew Perry's untimely death and what we know from studies with ketamine since it's been around since 1962, ketamine is a drug that has substance abuse potential, just like alcohol, just like cigarettes and other you know, habit-forming drugs.

Speaker 3:

However, the intent with which, you know, ketamine is being used today, that's the real important part. So it can be used for good purposes and then we can see that people can become addicted to ketamine. But in the clinical setting, where this is a controlled environment and I've treated, you know, hundreds of patients over the last seven years, none of the patients recorded that. You know, hey, dr Hill, by getting this ketamine, you know, I feel like I need it all the time and I'm a very conscientious doctor too. So there's certain you know, questions and parameters. We build around our protocol to make sure that we're helping patients and not hurting them or enabling them or assisting them to become addicted. And if you read anything on ketamine and Google reviews, like on our website, you'll see that it can be really a life-changing experience when having intravenous ketamine.

Speaker 2:

And outside of work. What do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

Well, I like to exercise, so I like to exercise, go to movies. I also like mentoring students that are interested in health care careers, particularly medicine.

Speaker 2:

And let's go ahead and change gears for a second. Can you describe one hardship or life challenge? You rose above and can now say because of it, you're better and stronger. When I say that for you, what comes to mind?

Speaker 3:

Well, there are several challenges, because I'm 63 years old now, so I've lived quite a long time. But my message to anyone who's listening is you know life can be challenging in certain aspects, even in my early years, with my education, you know I wanted to be a doctor, but I was young. In college I was in a fraternity. I kind of lacked focus at that time in life and I realized I was getting older and not achieving my goals. So I think that I would say to people never give up, work hard on your dreams and your goals, and if you do, if you don't quit, if you're very passionate about your goals, your aspirations, you will achieve them. Because when you're passionate about things, no matter what they are, you'll be relentless until you achieve your end point.

Speaker 2:

Dr Hill, please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about Ketamine Health and Wellness Center.

Speaker 3:

I think the one thing that patients that I put on my website we're very compassionate, we don't treat patients as numbers. I have a lot of clinical experience being a board-certified anesthesiologist for the past 34 years I still practice anesthesia and that the personal care that we give is very important to us. It goes along with the compassion. I perform all the ketamine infusions. I perform all the ketamine infusions. There's not a nurse, practitioner or another mid-level healthcare provider, and so I've gained a lot of clinical experience by talking to patients and being with them and guiding them through this treatment process.

Speaker 2:
