Speaker 1:

This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Sofia Yvette.

Speaker 2:

Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast. Are you in need of an event planner? Surprisingly, one may be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing you to your neighbor, gisela Glasgow with Plant Sit. Gisela, how are you doing today? Great?

Speaker 3:

Thank you for having me over. This is a nice surprise.

Speaker 2:

Yeah Well, we're so happy to have you on. We're excited to learn all about you and your business. Can you tell us a bit about Plant and Sip?

Speaker 3:

Well, plant and Sip has been around since 2017. We host mobile succulent terrarium building workshops because we don't have a storefront. So we travel all over DFW without a traveling fee and we come to you. So we can come either to your office, to your house. If you don't have the room at those places, then we have connections with different restaurants that can host us as well, and then we bring everything of what you need to create your succulent terrarium From the tablecloth, the containers, the succulents, different decorations.

Speaker 3:

We can do theme events Like, for example, now we are in fall, so I bring these fall trinkets that you can decorate with. Or, if you have like a special colors for your company, then we bring those colors and we can customize them. So then we'll teach you how to plant, how to decorate and then, at the end, how, of course, to take care of them, which you know, or as many as we know, succulents are really really easy to take care of, and that's what I chose them, and at the end you have something that you really want to show off and have green around you and how did you get into this business?

Speaker 3:

well, I'm originally from Lima, peru, and I came to Dallas in 2001. So, since I used to live in the coast, I have always all these plants and flowers around me, because Lima is a coastal city, so we will have, you know, this California weather all year long, and so we have a lot of plants and flowers. And then my grandma, she was the one that introduced me to all these wonderful world of the flora. And so then when I came to Dallas, you know, everything was green, but just just green. So I'm like I need to do something. I need to share my passion with people about flowers and plants.

Speaker 3:

But I also say, to be honest, I'm not a flower person, because I don't have the patience. They will die on me in one week. So, and then, of course, here we leave um running all the time. So if I wanted to do something for me and for everybody else, it has to be a plant or, yeah, some kind of living creature that you don't have to take care of and you can, you know, just take care once in a while. And those are the succulents. Succulents, you just have to water them every month and keep them in a bright place, and they are going to be thriving and be looking beautiful for you all the time.

Speaker 2:

And what are the myths or misconceptions in your industry?

Speaker 3:

myths or misconceptions in your industry. It's most about I'm going to say that not for specifically for what it's planting and succulents. Like I said, you will have to reach out people and let them know that this is a fun project activity to make. You are making a plant. You have maybe 70 or 80 percent of success on how to keep it alive, but you already learned how to do it. So if you really know how to do it, then you can do it again by yourself until you get to just keep them alive.

Speaker 3:

For me, it's most of it is when, when I um talk to um, my guest is like okay, you are planting something. You are making something for you because a plant is good for um the the soul, because it helps with protection, it helps with you keeping yourself um focused when you're working. And I always say because, when you go, for example, to a paint and sip uh party, you make your paint, which most of us make a horrible job, because my paint won't be coming up in my living room ever so, but with this is something that you created with your own colors, because we go at your own pace, and it's something that you can show off or maybe give it as a present, and everybody will be delighted about that and outside of work.

Speaker 2:

What do you do for fun?

Speaker 3:

for fun. I love to play tennis. That's my passion. So if, um, if I love my job, for what I do, I I have a passion, like I said, for flowers, and but also my business gives me the opportunity to spend time playing tennis, which is my other passion, because, as you know, you make your own hours whenever you are an entrepreneur. So tennis is what I do besides that. And then I have two puppies, and the latest addition to my family, which is my grandson, that he's two years old. So every time I have the chance I go and sneak out and go and see him as much as I can.

Speaker 2:

Oh, mm-hmm, the chance I go and sneak out and go and see him as much as I can. Go ahead and change gears for a second. Can you describe one hardship or life challenge? You rose above and can now say because of it, you're better and stronger. When I say that, what comes to mind for you?

Speaker 3:

It will be the loss of my mom. This was five years ago, and that's another thing, or no, it's been more than that, six years ago. That's one thing that made me change years that what happened is that I used to be a manager for the Gaylord Texan. I used to be the manager of ICE for five years. So, if you know, that's the show that they put at the end of the year and usually they have like 300,000 people going through, so it's a big event.

Speaker 3:

So, literally since I was a manager, I used to live there from October till January, if not since September. So because there's so much to do, there's so much work, and then, of course, everybody goes there for the holiday, so I will have to be working the holidays. And so when my mom passed, I thought and I said what am I doing? You know, I'm spending time working, working, working and I'm not spending time with my family. So I said I need to change. I need to have this balance in my life when I'm just not working during the holidays and miss all these opportunities to spend with my family. And that's what really pushed me to start my own business and try to get out of the corporate world.

Speaker 2:

Well, I am so sorry for your loss, Gisela. Please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about plant and sip.

Speaker 3:

One thing about plant and sip is that it's not a regular workshop. I always say it's a party, it's not a class a class. So when you come to one of my events, you are a hundred percent ensure that you are going to have this fun, that you are just going to come and because, since it's so simple and we got your own pace, you are able to drink, you are able to eat while you make your terrarium, you are going to be able to network and talk and create memories while you are making your terrarium, because we don't rush you. You are going to be there and plant and decorate as much as you can, so you are for sure going to have a blast and remember it, how fun it was, because it depends on the crowd. We do, you know, these jokes and we also do trivia, so it's a very, very fun event.

Speaker 3:

And how can our listeners learn more about Planting Tip Well we have a website, so if you can go to our website, it's wwwplantandsipcom. Or we are on Facebook at Plant and Sip, and we also are on Instagram at Plant and Sip DFW.

Speaker 2:

Well, Gisela, I really appreciate you being on the show. We wish you and your business the best moving forward.

Speaker 3:
