Speaker 1:

Welcome to the Crime Tapes. I'm Nessa, and today we delve into a case that starts on August 4, 2009, with a tragic event that would unravel a web of suspicion and family tension. Penny Stevens was vacationing with her daughter, her father, ted Hercutt and his wife in Myrtle Beach, south Carolina. While Penny was collecting shells along the shore a favorite pastime of her younger sister, shannon Hercutt, her daughter spotted them from the hotel balcony. Distressed, she called out that her grandfather was crying and something was terribly wrong. Rushing back to the hotel, penny was devastated to hear from her father that Shannon had died. Shannon's Cadillac Escalade had been found off a cliff on Walker Trail Road behind Dollywood in Tennessee. The crash had occurred late on August 3rd and had triggered an OnStar alert. Emergency responders faced dark and challenging conditions as they arrived at the scene, but an autopsy later revealed that Shannon had died from blunt force trauma, not from the crash itself.

Speaker 1:

As Penny and her family returned to Tennessee, her suspicions about her father grew stronger. Ted's behavior, including his focus on the financial implications of Shannon's death and his strained relationship with his children, raised red flags. Penny felt an eerie certainty that Ted was involved, driven by the fact that Shannon had recently removed him from her will. Penny's fears were compounded when she noticed Ted's peculiar behavior, such as his insistence on providing an alibi by taking a photograph of the family on the hotel balcony. This odd request only deepened her suspicions. Determined to seek justice, penny appeared on the Dr Phil show in February 2015,. Justice Penny appeared on the Dr Phil show in February 2015, publicly accusing Ted of orchestrating Shannon's murder for financial gain. Despite Ted's denial and his attempts to shift blame, penny's conviction remained firm. She believed that Ted's motive was rooted in the financial benefits he lost due to his exclusion from Shannon's will.

Speaker 1:

The investigation into Shannon's death continued even after Ted's passing in November 2017. In 2024, the Sevier County Sheriff's Office reopened the case and resubmitted evidence for further testing. Keeping the investigation active, a $45,000 reward is offered for information leading to an arrest.
