Quote Hurricane Helene formed out of the Yucatan Peninsula and traveled north through the Gulf of Mexico, strengthening to Category 4 hurricane, before making landfall in in New Perry, florida, on September 26, 2024. End quote Reported by the National Weather Service. Moving on on a lighter note, on sunday, the 29th, francis bean cobain, kirk cobain's daughter, welcomes first child with riley hawk. That's right, tony hawk's son. Kirk cobain's daughter and tony hawk's son have welcomed their first child together. That that's crazy. I didn't even know that they were together to begin with, but Frances Binklebane, 32-year-old daughter of late Nirvana Frontman, confirmed in an Instagram post on Saturday that she welcomed a child with her husband Riley Hawk, the famed skateboarder's 31-year-old son. She shared multiple photos of the baby boy, who was born on September 17th, including one of him being held by his father. Cobain also posted the photo in an Instagram story, accompanied by a John Lennon song Beautiful Boy, darling Boy. The baby's name is Ronan Walker Cobain Hawk. She wrote Quote Welcome to the world, most beautiful son. We love you more than anything. End quote Reported by USA Today. Honestly, I think that's very sweet and that's very interesting. I mean, that'd be crazy if he was a musician and a skateboarder Super talented, but I don't know. We'll see what Ronan is going to become one day. Moving on to the next segment, this segment is all about feel-good stories. A rather unique story sweeping American social media Moms leaving presents for other moms inside baby products. The story began when Nashville mom Denyasha Gonzalez went to Target and saw a strange yet translatable sight A silver clutch purse placed on the shelf with the baby supplies, a mother, gonzalez reasoned, had picked out the purse, which retailed for $20, but gave up on her own desires in order to provide for her baby. Gonzalez posted a video of it on TikTok which later went viral. In it, a long inhale and exhale is followed with a caption quote she deserved the purse. To the mother who chose themselves last. You deserve the world, tonight and always. End quote. The video went mega viral, being viewed by tens of millions of people, and it launched a spontaneous nationwide campaign to hide gift cards or cash inside boxes of diapers and other projects. That was propelled all the further after Gonzalez's video seen by cecily bachman, a mom influencer. She went to a target and recorded a video of herself buying a hundred dollar gift card, writing a note and walking through the store to stash it for a lucky, hard-working mom to find. Quote hey, you deserve that special. You thing you, you are amazing. End quote the note which she put in between a bag of huggies. Bachman called it the hashtag. She deserved the purse challenge, and the Washington Post reports there are now over 150 videos on TikTok under this hashtag, all featuring either women leaving gifts for their postpartum peers or finding the gifts, and usually recording a tear-soaked thank you video about it. I think that is very heartwarming, especially during these times when inflation is through the roof. Times are getting much more difficult, and especially with jobs. I mean, I'm not going to get into too much about it, but you know, job security is difficult, unemployment is really high and I think this is a very nice reminder that we are people and if you are fortunate enough to help to do so, enough to help to do so. A stranger carried a senior hiker for hours on his back after she fell and couldn't walk. A woman who broke her leg while hiking was rescued by a trio of young adults who carried her all the way down the mountain on their backs Like a piggyback ride, you know, like a piggyback ride. Even realizing she'd been alone for the 3.2 mile trek, ursula Bannister had been confident of getting to the place where she scattered her mother's ashes 23 years ago. She had gone up many times before. For anyone who's taking the trail to High Rock Lookout a viewpoint near Ashford in Washington they'll know it's hard and steep, as the 79-year-old banister predicted, she made it to the top, left some flowers and began heading back down, catching a hole in the trail bed with her foot. She fell forward hard and by the time she turned herself right side up, she saw her foot was pointing the wrong way, the pain. She cried out for help and before long a group of three young hikers came to her side and called 911. A search and rescue team said they'd be there in five hours, discouraging everybody. But 20-year-old Troy May, an Air Force airman, was hiking up to the lookout that day with his fiance and friend Leighton Allen. First love asked them if they had any painkillers, to which they replied they did not and realizing the woman had nothing to help her, strap in for five upcoming hours of agony. But Troy took action. Courtesy of Ursula Bannister, carried by airman Troy May. Quote I knew I was capable of carrying her down, end quote. Troy told the Washington Post, quote I really didn't make much of a decision. I knew I needed to carry her down, if I could. End quote. Lifting her gently onto his back, he began the slow, careful journey downhill. He began the slow, careful journey downhill, hiking three quarters of the 1.8 miles that remained on Bannister's journey, while Leighton the friend remember took care of the home stretch On the way they passed occupational therapist Emily O'Brien, who led Ursula through some breathing techniques, and therapist Tim Mayer, who splinted her leg. With the extra hands Troy was able to move more assuredly and keep enough puff in his lungs to talk to Ursula on the way down to try and keep her mind off the pain. That is very sweet, but it's very unfortunate to Ursula that she broke her foot. But luckily those three people were able to help her. You know, give her some company, talk to her a piggyback, ride down. That is a very sweet story. I like that. This next feel-good story is one that I think should be recognized a little bit more. Not that the other ones need to be recognized less, but this one it's home to me because this person still gets to do what they enjoy doing. So this chef returned to the kitchen thanks to a floating seat invented after a motorcycle injury that made him immobile. An Australian chef who lost almost all control of his legs is back on the line again thanks to a brilliant invention from a friend. A C-shaped metal hook suspended from the set of rails from the ceiling allows Chef Lehmer to literally float through the kitchen. Okay, maybe not literally, but he's pretty much floating While setting his hands free to chop dice, quarter and fillet. Ten years ago, peter Lehmer from Salzburg suffered a serious motorcycle injury that left him without the use of his legs. Even with course after course of physical therapy, he is still considered 80% disabled. Besides unimaginable pain and mental strain, his financial future was hopeless and massively threatened from one day to the next. The love for his family, as well as the passion for his job, lit a fire of inspiration in the heart of Lehmish's friend, 52-year-old Bernard Titchy. Bernard ran a nearby zipline adventure course and had an understanding of hanging movement. Together they developed standing ovation, a one-of-a-kind device that allows disabled users to sit comfortably on a bicycle seat at the point of a large hook. The hook is attached by carabiners to a railing on the ceiling that allows the user to slide up and down the workplace. Railing on the ceiling that allows the user to slide up and down the workplace. That is very innovative for sure. I believe more restaurants can can really benefit for something like that. I understand it may get it in people's way, but if you really think about it like he's like, all the railings are on the ceiling and he's pretty much being suspended by one hook and a seat, so he's sitting around and the only thing that's really like in the way is like the hook, like that's alongside his back, going up his spine, above his head. I mean he can still cook, you know, alongside his back, going up his spine, above his head. I mean he can still cook, you know. But think about it how many people who are disabled in many different ways can no longer do the things that brought them passion that they have the passion for that they love doing, and I think that's very, very sweet of his friend to help him out like that. All right, those were some real good feel-good stories. Kind of inspired me to go jump out of a parachute with a parachute, but I really won't do that because I'm a big chicken. But we're going on break. We're going to take a quick break, but don't go anywhere. We're going to get into our first game of the day and see how smart you are. Did I get you on that one? You all remember that spongebob episode. I'm not talking to anyone who's under the age of 17 right now, not that spongebob that you're watching, that you grew up on. I'm talking about old Spongebob when he's laying on the floor. Photosynthesis, photosynthesis. Y'all remember that, no, just me. Moving on Number four Question what does it mean to saute something in cooking? What does it mean to saute something in cooking? What does it mean to saute something in cooking? What does saute mean? You're cooking, you're chefing up, you're sauteing. What does that mean? What is to saute? All right Time? All right time to saute means to cook food quickly in a small amount of oil or butter over medium high heat. All right, how are you doing so far? Are you doing good? Four to four, still feeling good. Well, we're gonna move on to the eighth grade. And eighth grade, middle school. I know it was a difficult, challenging time. I know hormones are kicking in and you're trying to figure yourself out and no one makes sense and no one understands you. I get it, but I understand you. I do. But moving on to eighth grade, question number five what is the role of the hippocampus in the brain? So the hippocampus is a little part in your brain. What does that do? What is the role of the hippocampus in the brain? Time the answer. Do you remember what the hippocampus was? The hippocampus is the part of the brain that helps with forming and storing new memories. So the hippocampus need to remind you about the hippocampus. Crazy huh, alright, how'd you do? Let me know. Comment down below. How did you do? Did you get 5 out of 5 right? Moving on to our next segment, have you ever thought to yourself why do leaves change color in the fall? Right, like it's always green. Well, I mean, if it's well taken care of, and one of the most beautiful parts of fall is watching the leaves change color. But why does happen? It's all part of the tree's preparation for the winter. Here's some fun facts about leaves changing color. More science-y stuff. Chlorophyll is fading. Leaves are green because of the pigment called chlorophyll, which helps plant make food. When fall comes, trees stop producing chlorophyll and the green fades away, which reveals their hidden colors. Right, that's why you see yellow and orange, sometimes red and purple. That's why I see all these different colors and they're always in the leaves, but they're hidden by the green Most of the time of the year. Because, remember Green and photosynthesis, because your hippocampus, remembered, Right? We just talked about this Crazy. So Some trees produce red or purple pigments In the fall. These colors come from sugars trapped in the leaves as the tree prepares for winter. Temperature and sunlight also have an effect, because the change in temperature and shorter days trigger the process of the leaves changing color. But why do leaves fall? Trees drop their leaves to conserve water and energy during the cold winter months when there's less sunlight. That's why some of them are just bare, Bare, naked, no leaves. It looks kind of sad, but really he's just trying to survive the winter. You know what else that I've been thinking about? Have you ever thought to yourself why do we carve pumpkins for Halloween? I know this is so much fun, like hey, I'm not saying that sarcastically, it's actually so much fun to carve pumpkins, to carve them, to even like draw little designs and all these pumpkin carving contests. Some people are way more skilled than I'll ever be. But why do we carve pumpkins for halloween? Right? Carving pumpkins, also known as jack-o'-lanterns it's one of the most popular halloween traditions. But how did the spooky tradition start? It has an interesting history rooted in folklore and celebrations from long, long ago. Here's some fun facts about carving pumpkins. It actually started with turnips Turnips. Turnips aren't a vegetable that aren't so popular anymore. So if you don't know, google that the original jack-o'-lanterns weren't pumpkins. They were actually carved from turnips in Ireland and Scotland. Pumpkins became the go-to in America because they were more common, easier to carve. With the pumpkin popularity in America, right, because they grow abundantly during the fall, which is when Halloween is celebrated. Some folklore of the legend of Stingy Jack. The tradition comes from an old Irish myth about a man named Stingy Jack who tricked the devil and roamed the earth with carved turnip lantern to light his way. Oh, so that's kind of like the Headless Horseman, right? Is that the same person? I don't know, I didn't get this far into my homework and research guys. But it can also be used for lighting the way for spirits. People originally carved scary faces into turnips and pumpkins to ward off evil spirits or guide friendly spirits during Samhain, an ancient Celtic festival. But ultimately now, since we don't follow those traditions other than carving the pumpkins, right, it's just fun for everyone. Fun for all ages. Today, carving pumpkins is a fun family activity and many communities hold pumpkin carving contests, making it a major part of spooky season celebrations. Also, research shows that on the onset of the fall can trigger seasonal affective disorder, which the acronym for seasonal affective disorder is SAD Crazy huh In some individuals due to reduced sunlight exposure. A study published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry found a significant correlation between decreased daylight in autumn and the onset of depressive symptoms in susceptible individuals symptoms in susceptible individuals. Here are some several strategies that can help alleviate depressive symptoms, particularly those related to seasonal affective disorder, sad during the fall and winter months. Light therapy Use a light box. Light therapy involves exposure to a bright artificial light that mimics natural sunlight. Using a light box for about 20 30 minutes each morning can help regulate circadian rhythms and improve mood. Look, I know we all can't afford a light box. I know we're all just trying to get by. Next to the fireplace, next to the stove, turn on the oven, boil some water. I get it all right. But this is for those who can. I'm not talking about standing right next to a lamp. You know, turn on the lamp, just put your hands around it like a cozy fire. I don't think that's quite what it means, but these are for people that that can use a light box, but a cheaper alternative. Just get outside. Yes, it's getting getting cold, but really enjoy the fall, this autumn weather. I know in some places it's still hot, still desert heat, some places it's freezing. Global warming, global cooling, climate change, whatever. Just get outside 30 minutes, get some of that uv rays. I know I'm not talking about tanning, you know. Just get out there, spend some time outdoors. Even on cloudy days, natural light can help. Try to spend some time outside, especially in the morning, to get some sunlight exposure. Start your day off, right, you know, in the evening, coming back from work, you want to go watch football. Football's not on every day. I get it painful to not watch, I guess. Right, I say painful to watch people, to not watch. But get outside. Throw the rock around you, you know. Go outside, hang out with your kids, you know. Go for a walk, get some sunlight exposure. It's all good. Which leads me to getting regular exercise. Stay active, engage in regular physical activity and boost endorphin levels and improve mood. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Excuse me Most days of the week. Excuse me most days of the week. Yeah, duh, we all know this. Just go outside for a little bit. Do some stretching. You know you've been sitting in that chair all day. You've been working really hard. Stretching does not hurt you. Well, I'm not talking about going to yoga right away. Y'all know the basic stretching they make you do at work. Try some of those. I know it's getting colder and the hot chocolate, the hot coffee, the booze are starting to flow a little bit. But we should limit our alcohol and caffeine intake. Hey, hey, hey, slow down. Don't come at me. I know you do what you got to do just to get by through the day. But take it a little easy. You know, maybe have one less beer, one less cup of coffee. You should definitely not be having two Red Bulls or energy drinks. Relax, I'm guilty of that, so I can speak from definite experience. Someone at your intake. Reducing alcohol and caffeine consumption can help minimize mood swings and anxiety. Just take it easy. I know time's a little tough right now, but just enjoy the things that you can right now, live in the present and relax. It's okay, it's a-okay. I know things are tough. I work a regular job too, aside from doing podcasting. It's tough, but Relax. If you want to take a pill for that, take a chill pill, they say right. Vitamin D Supplements. Vitamin D Is pretty much what you get from the UV rays when you're out in the sun. If you have any problems, you know physical problems, heart conditions, anything like that you should definitely consult a doctor first Before consuming vitamin D pills. Some individuals may benefit from vitamin D supplements, especially in regions where limited sunlight during the fall and winter months. A health care provider can recommend appropriate dosages. I'm not telling you to sling the the pillies. I'm not telling you to do that. Vitamin d supplements can help you, but obviously in moderation, just like your alcohol and caffeine. We're talking about this right hippocampus memory oof on point today. Implementing these strategies can help mitigate the effects of reduced sunlight and improve overall mood swings during the following winter months. If symptoms persist, it's essential to seek help from a healthcare professional. Remember that that if symptoms persist, it's essential to keep. It's essential to seek help from a healthcare professional. I'm not a healthcare professional. I'm a person you listen to in your ear, at work, on a commute, wherever. I'm only giving you suggestions based on what I do. Alright. I'm only giving you suggestions based on what I do, alright. Time for some rapid fun facts. October's name. October gets its name from the Latin word octo, meaning eight, and the eighth month of the Roman calendar before January and February were added Halloween origins. In February we're added Halloween Origins. Halloween celebrated on October 31st originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. It's also National Hot Dog Day on October 4th. It's not only Ad, a sheltered dog month, but also includes a national dog day on October 4th. So if you're listening to this, by the 4th we celebrate all dogs and remote adoption. It's also Oktoberfest, the world's largest beer festival. Oktoberfest, takes place in Munich, Germany. But go downtown. Someone's going to be celebrating Oktoberfest down there some local pub, some local bar, and it runs from late September to the first weekend in October. So you better hurry up and catch Oktoberfest while you can, because it attracts millions of visitors each year. It's also the autumn equinox. The autumn equinox usually occurs around September 22nd or 23rd, so we did miss it Marking the beginning of fall in the northern hemisphere, where the day and night are approximately equal in length. Did you notice that the daylight is getting pretty shorter? But the equinox on the 23rd and 22nd was the day that it was about equal sunlight and equal darkness In the harvest moon, the full moon that occurs closest to the autumn. Equinox is called the harvest moon, typically falling in September, october. It's named for the time of year when farmers harvest the crops. Fair enough, right. Here's some famous birthdays. October is home of many famous birthdays, including that of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2nd Tomorrow, if you're listening to this, on the 1st. Pablo Picasso, october 25th. And Bill Gates, october 28nd, tomorrow, if you're listening to this, on the 1st. Pablo Picasso, october 25th. And Bill Gates, october 28th. I know there are many, many more famous people with birthdays in October and I'm sorry I couldn't get to all of them. But happy birthday to all the October babies. Shout out to you guys and fall back. I'm not talking about literally falling back, but october marks the end of daylight, same time in many regions, with clocks falling back one hour for the first sunday in november, providing an extra hour sleep. We still gotta wait a whole nother month just to get an extra hour of sleep. I'm tired, man, I man. I'm tired of being mental. Anyway, don't forget that October recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month, which includes World Mental Health Day on October 10th, which aims to raise awareness and improve mental health care. Down Syndrome Awareness Month promotes a society that values diversity and supports those with Down Syndrome. Breast Cancer Awareness Month promotes screening and prevention of breast cancer. So do your part to spread awareness and show your support to loved ones and your neighbors. Remember, be kind, you don't know what people may be experiencing. We're going to take another quick break, but don't go anywhere. We're gonna play another game called mind reader when we come back. See you in a bit. Welcome back to the show. I like to call this game Mind Reader. I don't know the official name of this game, but this game has been floating around TikTok and IG Reels and I want to play it with you. So let's get started. Question one name a popular fall drink. Remember, don't say the same thing as me, but can you name a popular fall drink here? I'll give you a hint of what I'm going to pick. I'm'm gonna pick the obvious one, so you might want to change up your answer. You got it. Here's my answer. If you said pumpkin spice latte, you're out. Yeah, I told you it's gonna be. So you said pumpkin spice latte, you're out. You said anything else, you're still playing. But I mean, who am I? I don't know if you really picked that. So if you want to keep playing, keep playing along. Question number two Name a type of pie Any pie. You know the dessert To eat. Name a type of pie. If you need more time for some reason, don't forget, you can also pause. But here's my answer. If you picked apple pie, you're safe. Eh, relax, you're good. If you said apple pie, because my answer is pecan pie, or pecan pie or pecan pie, however you say it, you're out. Question number three what kind of clothing do people get excited to wear when the weather starts to cool down? When the weather starts to cool down, what kind of clothing do people get excited to wear when the weather cools down? You know there's a lot of warm things that people like to wear. I just need you to pick one. Here's my answer. If you said scarf, you're out. Man, that's. I mean, it's getting a little more difficult. But if you said scarf, scarves are very nice to wear, they're more accessory. I mean, does your neck really get cold? Put on a jacket, zip it up, I don't know. Moving on to number four, what activity do people often do with pumpkins? Right, there are a lot of things you can do with pumpkins. Just name one activity that people do with pumpkins Answer. Answer if you said carving pumpkins, you play the two save, you're out. Hey, man, it's too easy. Everyone carves pumpkins. You. If you said baking kudos to you, nice, because that's another obvious answer. But carving pumpkins, you're out. Last question this is getting a little tough now but it's a little bit more of a personal question. But hear me out, which do you prefer during the fall, a cozy bonfire or a hayride? Which do you prefer during the fall? So pick one Cozy bonfire or a hayride. Which do you prefer during the fall? So pick one. Option one a cozy bonfire, or option two, a hayride. Remember, don't say the same thing as me. I mean, you have a 50-50 chance. That's my answer. If you said a cozy bonfire, you are safe, you are my kind of people. If you said a hayride, you're out. Hey, I hope you really enjoyed this game. How did you do? Did you get all five right? Did you win? How many did you get right? Comment down below. Let me know how you did. Moving on to the next segment of Am I the A-hole? These stories are comprised of Reddit posts where people have submitted their stories in search of opinions or sometimes seek validations based on the tricky situations they're in. You ready? This Reddit user said am I the a-hole for completely cutting my wife off from our finances because she wouldn't stop ordering takeout? Quote I am 41 years old and male. My wife is 39 years old. My wife doesn't work due to a minor disability. It's not as if she cannot work, but she complains of discomfort and exhaustion all the time. The discussion over her working basically ended five years ago and I have completely given up on the prospect of her ever having a job again, seeing as she doesn't even come close to qualifying for disability and brings in no income. We currently live entirely off my salary. I do not mind financially supporting her, but my wife's spending habits have gradually become more and more reckless. It began with her ordering takeout twice a week, and then that escalated into three times a week, and now she's ordering takeout nearly every day. This is all despite our fridge being fully stocked constantly. I do the shopping and I make sure to even keep our freezer full of things she would only have to microwave. Last month was a particularly heavy one for her. She spent $1,176 on delivery Epsilon. We cannot afford this. There were several days that she ordered twice. I may have reacted harshly, but on Friday I pulled money out of our savings completely, paid off the card and canceled it. I then removed all the money from her joint account and funneled it into my own account. Apparently, my wife learned this and she tried to order takeout. She tried to call the company who explained the card had been canceled. She texted me asking what had happened and I responded that she was cut off. Well, when I walked in the door that evening, my wife was laying on the floor dramatically saying that she had low blood sugar. I told her she could eat any of the food we had in our fridge or freezer. I also noticed that she took the garbage out, probably for the first time in a decade. I'm surprised she even knew where the outdoor bin was. I can only assume she was disposing of the evidence of what she ate, as she was pretending to have not eaten, but I honestly don't care enough to dig to the garbage to find it. She was furious at me all weekend was what I did over the top end quote he is not the a-hole who is the a-hole of the wife. But I mean, I can only imagine how many countless conversations they've had about their finances and her spending habits and stuff like that. But that's not OK. For the wife to do what was OK that he did. That, I mean it's it's a little bit of a tricky one, but I think the guy is more on the right than what the wife is, mainly because he was bringing home the money and it was his income and, of course, the marriage. So it's a joint income. I get that, but you have to remember that he was putting all the finances into the joint account and took that money out to pay off the card and then cut her off. But, but, but, but, but. The fridge and the freezer were always fully stocked. And then for her to like, find a way to still order takeout and then take out the trash, like, all, like, as if, like as a normal occurrence, when she hasn't done that, I guess what in a decade, about 10 years, and then lying on the floor talking about low blood sugar Nah, that's, that's too much. Nah, like hey, she needs to grow up. And I don't know what kind of help she needs. Maybe need to go to some counseling if they want to keep this marriage going, because at that rate I don't want to say it, but at that rate it's not going to look good. Here's some comments from the post right. From the post right. This Reddit user, emo underscore basist, says not the a-hole $1,176 on takeout, that's a half a month's wage for me. No, this needs to stop, and the manipulation with the blood sugar thing is beyond overdramatic. The fact that she took then garbage after years of not doing proves she was doing what she was doing. This Reddit user, loki the Corgi, said as someone who tends to suffer from low blood sugar, I'm kind of pissed that this was the ruse used and she had food in the fridge. If she genuinely had low blood sugar enough to faint, she wouldn't be conscious unless she gave herself a shot of glucagon. This person needs a mental health evaluation. This is not something people right in the head do. You need to absolutely lock down your credit. I consider divorce if your wife doesn't start acting like an adult Not the a-hole. This Reddit user, aldis Prime, said If she was spending $25 per meal, that's 47 meals in one month. This is completely out of control. Like she's using this to fill some kind of hole in her life. Who knows, maybe after not working for five years, she's just super bored. Anyway, that's an astronomical amount of takeout. That one is a rough situation to be in. What's your opinion? End quote From Mark Twain. The secret of getting ahead is getting started. I mean, if you feel like you're swamped at work, at home, there's all these things to do, I feel you. You just got to get started and keep doing it. I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but once you get things started and you get things going, we'll eventually finish it. And once you finish the next one, get started with the next one and eventually you'll get ahead of everything and you won't have the burden of having to do so much. Think about it. But all right, that's it. I'll see you next time. See you next time. Bye you.
