hello and welcome back to the Lethal Library. welcome if this is your first time, or if not, thank you for following along. We are a true crime podcast. we focus on death row cases in Idaho and the Pacific Northwest. Danny here is going to be telling me another crazy tale today. and we hope you enjoy. what are we talking about today? Danny? We also drink vodka. We are having some drinks, so please pour yourself a cocktail because we like to have a little fun.
DaniUnless you're driving. If you're doing dishes, don't do that. Yes. Laundry. Yes. Driving.
StephanieNo.
DaniDrinking and dishes, yes. Oh.
StephanieDrinking and driving. If you're
Danilistening to us at work,
Stephanieno. Do not tell your boss that we told you to have a cocktail, cuz, sis.
DaniAlrighty, well, Steph, drugs are bad. True. People are bad. Also
Stephanietrue.
DaniMixing those two together makes a bad combination. Okay. Add in some unresolved childhood trauma, and a dislike of women, and it can be deadly. Yep. Bad combo there. Today, I'm going to tell you about Eric Virgil Hall. My research today comes from the articles from the good old Idaho Statesman.
StephanieLove them.
DaniAnd a 2020 article in the Boise Weekly by John Barry. Thanks,
StephanieJohn.
DaniIt actually is a very, insightful, it was an, it was very interesting article. So we're going to start in the year 2000.
StephanieIn
Dani2000, co workers of Lynn Henneman reported her missing in Boise, Idaho. Lynn, 38 years old, was a United Airlines flight attendant. Co workers reported her missing after she didn't show up for her scheduled shift on Monday morning. She was last seen on the evening of September 24th, telling her co workers she was going to go for a walk on the Greenbelt around 3 p. m. Dive teams are dispatched to search the Boise River. Dogs were sent out to search the green belt.
StephanieAnd just so y'all know, the green belt is a huge walking biking pathway that goes through Boise. It's right by the river. It's really nice. It's beautiful. It's very popular. there's parks along the way. There's like a nature center. There's a lot of things that are right along the green belt. So this is,
Daniand also there's businesses. You could jet down the green belt and Have dinner here. Have dinner there. there's a It's a very cool part of our community. Boise State's right there. You can do so many things. Fish. Run. Hike. It's just beautiful. And fish.
StephanieI
Danifeel like we have fishing a lot. Idaho
Stephaniehas more waterways than most states, I think. I'm, don't quote me on that, but I'm pretty sure, that's why we have so much hydroelectricity. We have more rivers than most states.
DaniDo you know what can be quoted?
StephanieWhat?
DaniIdaho has the largest undammed river in the United States. It's the Salmon River. Thank you. The
StephanieSalmon River.
DaniOkay, I just know that, which is weird. Okay, I know why. The damn fishin Police, said she was spotted at a local pub and grill near downtown Boise and that her credit card had been used to purchase souvenirs at the Art Museum at 421 p. m. So this is what we're saying, there's so many things to do. You can jet off and go to the art It's a great time, especially if you like being outside. Art Museum, stop and have, yeah. It is, it's really beautiful. Witnesses seen Lynn eating dinner around 7pm at the pub, where she paid cash, and left alone. On September 26th, so two days later, her family all came to Boise. Because she's a flight attendant, this is not her home station. they all flew out here, they were desperate.
StephanieThis isn't her, home spot for No. Oh my gosh, and she was just trying to, being a visitor here, and especially back then, everyone thinks there's nothing in Idaho. They're like, y'all have dirt roads, y'all even have Running water. Indoor plumbing. Yeah. So, that is, she was really trying to experience And she
Daniloved it, that's what she did. As a flight attendant, she enjoyed Going out and seeing where she's at and seeing, and if you're a traveler, a flight attendant job is like so badass because you can like, Yes. Oh, I spent the day here. Oh, I did this. Got a layover,
Stephanieyou have the whole evening to yourself. Oh, and she was really loving it.
DaniSo her family flew in, and held a press conference. Her husband, Walter S., said they were just married three weeks before. He stated, she loves taking walks, and she is very city savvy. Nothing has ever happened to her when she's done this in Los Angeles, Rome, or New York. And
StephanieIdaho is very, very low on crime comparatively. a lot of people do not lock their cars or houses, which I don't advise. But there's, that truly happens all the time. Still to
Danithis day.
StephanieYes.
DaniStill to this day.
StephanieMy mother
Danileaves her keys in her car when we go to Walmart.
StephanieYou know how I feel about that.
DaniI feel the same way, and sometimes when we go grocery shopping together, I'm like, We have 150 combined between us in the car. Do you think you might oughta wanna take the keys out?
StephanieYou're asking for someone. I know that we live in a safe area, but Don't do that. There's desperate people out there. It doesn't mean we don't have homeless people. It doesn't mean we don't have people that are struggling or desperate or just looking to Take people's stuff to come up for nothing. Especially when, your mom has a brand new vehicle, doesn't it automatically lock when she walks away? What are we doing?
DaniUgh, Tibet.
StephanieI
Danijust had this conversation with her because we were shopping for Thanksgiving. Anyway, okay. Walter said Lynn typically works three days before returning back to their home in New York. So she's living in New York. with her new husband, they, um, and she does her three day trips for work and then comes home. Lynn Beth Henneman was originally from Bozeman, Montana. She had to be Phil and Boise.
StephanieShe has the best of both worlds. So she's, and listen, I've been to New York and it was a little overwhelming for me for sure to be in a city that big because Boise, especially in 2000, wasn't huge. But they're really, it's very quaint, and if you especially are outdoorsy, you'll find your little niche. So her living in New York and being from Bozeman, she sounds like a savvy girl. I'm sure that she's had to walk at night in New York and protect herself. So I'm sure that she was,
Daniyeah,
Stephaniealert.
DaniBut she also was appreciating the small town ness of Boise. she was born, April 12th, 1962. Lynn found great pleasure in serving others as a flight attendant. I'm going to tell you, this has been one of the most, just reading about how, what a talented person she was. She loved her family. She was very passionate about her nieces and nephews. She spoiled them rotten. Lynn was a gifted singer and a superb chef according to her friends. Okay, she does it all. She was a talented seamstress and made many wedding dresses.
StephanieOkay, Lynn. Props to you, girl. Can
DaniI just have like 20 percent of that talent? Thank you.
StephaniePlease.
DaniThe next day after the press conference, Lynn's purse and other personal belongings were found in a football field of East Junior High. A boy watching a football game with his parents found the items in tall weeds next to an outbuilding near the bleachers. Oh my gosh. The next day after that, because that was in the news. the next day, a 13 year old girl came forward and told the police she had found the purse behind the Carl's Jr's restaurant that was close to the football field. She said she went through it and threw it back. She said she did not take anything, any personal belongings. And the police are unsure how the purse got behind the football field because she was like I saw it I put it I threw it back and but they're just it ended up in the weeds next to the football field So I'm assuming somebody else picked it up someone else went and was trying to be sneaky and go through it thinking They were gonna find something and then just toss one if
Stephanieit was in the news. Could you imagine? If you were just like, someone struggling and finding a purse thinking, Oh, I've got this. And then you look at the ID and you're like, if you've heard anything on the news,
DaniIt was all over the news because this doesn't happen here. No. This, a woman doesn't go for a walk and she just disappears. Mm
Stephaniemm.
DaniLynn's family, desperate for any information, put up a 10, 000 reward. Lynn's employer added another 10, 000 to the reward.
StephanieThank you, United, but I think you have a little bit more in the pocketbook. I would have loved to see those numbers be a bit higher.
DaniWouldn't that have been great?
StephanieUnited. Just saying. Thank, thank you for that, but. You're absolutely right,
Danilike. I mean. Did you hear me just stop and Did you hear the wheel going? Yeah,
Stephanieit's it's nice that they participated. I'm not, so I'm not being too shady, but for a billion dollar company Come on, you can, you can make it a little bit more Attractive for people
Danito, and there's people giving information Before this, like people here are wanting to help. It was, it was Big news. On October 7th, almost two weeks after Lynn's disappearance, a body of a woman was discovered in the Boise Utah area. River by a fisherman a fisherman
Stephanieagain. I feel like they're doing it's just sorry fish How much that would suck to just be going fishing and find a dead body
Danilike I wasn't signing up for this I just want to trout a trout dinner
StephanieBut thankfully there was someone there to find it because they said they had dive teams
DaniYeah, they had so many people out there. So it was it was it was such a big deal like They were combing for her everywhere so that she wasn't found until two weeks later was surprising to me because this was, it was like front page news every year. The body was partially submerged under a log. Forensic examiners used dental records and identified that it was the body of Lynn. The autopsy revealed she had died the same day she disappeared. On October 21st, another assault was reported by a woman on the green belt. A woman partially dressed. Flagged down restaurant patrons at the Cottonwood Grill just after 9 p. m.
StephanieOh my gosh. I just had lunch there last week. And I just have to tell you, Danny and I talked about this off camera, but I remember this. I was younger when it happened, but I remember my parents used to listen to the news every night and it was on. So it's like bringing back these memories that I forgot that I had of how much this was in the news because it became. A very fear inducing thing for the community because it doesn't happen.
DaniIt absolutely, was a fear. The community was rocked. It, it, it really, and there'll be a little bit more in here about that, The woman was not seriously hurt, the police stated. They set up a command center behind the restaurant and had helicopters searching the area with over 40 police officers. They were not fucking around.
StephanieThey were putting all of our resources. You're on
Danivacation? Go fuck yourself. Get down here. Don't care. You've worked six straight Don't care. Get down here. Around 1230 AM, the police located her pants and other items near the river. The woman stated that someone had grabbed her from behind and pulled her into the bushes. After a struggle, the woman was able to escape. The city is on high alert, just like you were saying. People are freaking out. They have extra police officers monitoring the Greenbelt now. They are on it. we're gonna find We want their presence known. Yeah, and they want to keep people safe. And yeah, we're here. Two days later, the woman admitted to concocting the attack.
StephanieNot helpful,
Danima'am. Very not helpful. I just get so frustrated because the police were policing. I mean, how many times have you heard us talk shit? trying, in this case. We'll talk shit.
StephanieYeah,
Danibut they were actually doing the helicopter out Police officers 40 out. Let's go. Let's find this guy and then she's yeah The police suspected it was a hoax after several inconsistencies in the woman's story the police filed official charges of filing a false false police report against a 20 year old woman They are all also looking to be reimbursed for the 6, 500 spent on the false investigation.
StephanieAnd that's, I mean, I know it was back in the early 2000s, but it's like, I wonder what the cost of that would be now. we have more resources now since the pandemic. Boise has grown, but they were giving it everything we had back then, And I know the woman's
Daniname, and I'm just, I'm not gonna go there. She was a 20 year old. Hopefully she's
Stephanielearned from this. Yeah. Because don't do that. Don't,
Danido not be getting attention by following, filing, just. It throws such a wrench. It really does. And also, adds to the fear of the city and
Stephaniethey're like, now it's happened twice. I could be the next one. Yeah.
DaniNow they're just scared. Completely unnecessary. So that was in 2000. All of that stuff took place. We're going to jump ahead to 2003. Two and a half years later, on March 1st, 2003. A teenager found the body of Cheryl Ann Hanlon in a children's play fort in Boise's North End. The 16 year old boy was taking his dog for a walk. Police detective said Cheryl had only been dead hours before she was found, and most likely died from strangulation. So this, this kid, and, and I read interviews, he went immediately,
Stephaniemom, went and got his mom. I can see why. I mean, a kid would never be expecting to find a body in a, you said it was in like a play, That's
DaniIt was kind of a makeshift playhouse that somebody had made up, up on, uh, the North, you know, there was property still there, the kids played there, there, I, I read, people played there, they took their kids to play there, and he's like, is that what I see, oh my god, he said, I, yeah, he, what a horrible experience for, not only, I mean, of course, Cheryl,
StephanieBut that's traumatic. And especially you probably had great memories there. And now it's like, Ooh, yeah. Also found a dead body. So fucked.
DaniA recount of Cheryl's last evening started at McCleary's pub on state street, you know, it early Friday evening. And then she went to Gil's canine bar on main street to play shuffleboard with a friend, Cheryl then returned home around 1130 for a few minutes and then left again. She was last seen around 3 a. m. downtown in front of Elliot's bar walking with a man. An employee from the bar offered to call her a cab, but she refused. And I'm gonna get into some more detail, some more exact details during the trial that comes out. That's it. That's a big ballpark of what happened, but there's more details coming up in the trial. Okay, police did find her 1987 Ford Ranger in downtown Boise, so it was in the area. Fucking Ford Ranger. I was hoping you would say that. Fucking Ford Ranger! Because I said it to myself in my head as I, as I typed it. Um, Cheryl was an avid gardener. These women are spectacular people. It just, it's
StephanieLike what the hell?
DaniShe was an avid gardener and loved the outdoors, especially camping. And everybody said Cheryl was always putting her, her others before herself. She was so kind. she was a mother, and she, was working as a bartender at the Owyhee. I'm not familiar with that place. I think I've
Stephanieheard of it.
DaniUm, but she was also working at another place, Doing catering and bartending. She was very familiar with Kind of that scene as far as like she knew other bartenders Oh, yeah, and you know how when you get into that scene, you just know, you know well and in
Stephaniebartending culture like especially and I'm sure this happens everywhere, but There is usually a bar that bartenders go to after close and sometimes it rotates depending on the day of the week or sometimes it's always one bar that's like, the bar is closed to the public, but all the bartenders go there just to have a drink or you know.
DaniVint, let me tell you about the asphalt I served this week. Exactly. Or let me tell you about this great tip that I got this week. Yeah, so she was
Stephanieconnected with the community.
DaniYeah, she was and she was a, she was a regular at McCleary's. Like they knew her as a friend and not She she would just go in and have a couple of drinks and go home It wasn't she wasn't staying there till two o'clock in the morning getting slosh She's just like she liked to go there and visit with people and she obviously it was her fave bar And she liked to shuffleboard and pool and darts and all that. She was Participating. I like that too. It's fun. On March 8th, 32 year old Eric Virgil Hall was arrested on a probation So seven days later, Hall was arrested on a probation violation. He was on parole for a 1991 statutory rape. Church. Conviction. Not a church. Yikes. It was a conviction. He violated his parole for failing to register as a sex offender. That's going to get you every time. Well, and I, I did in my research come along some, a friend of his said that she was trying to help him register, but he. Was he he didn't have a permanent address and so they're like, yeah We can't register you unless you have a permanent address. I have thoughts about that. Okay. I don't I don't know They're still here They're still living here. I mean, how does that work? Do you say, like, I mostly stay in this eight block area?
StephanieLike, you know what I mean? Well, and if he's homeless, is he sleeping on the street? Is he crashing at friends house? Periodically? I think
Daniit was all of the above for my research. So, how do you register them? Anyway. Put your
Stephaniemost common address, I guess, but not registering. That's the easiest to be like, violation. So. Doesn't matter,
Danihe's a dick.
StephanieYeah.
DaniLet's just get that on. Let's just. Just to be clear. Just to be clear. Fuck this guy. On March 14th, so he was in jail for this, for this probation violation, and on March 14th, About a week later, Hall was charged with first degree murder after he admitted to detectives that he had killed Cheryl, okay? Hall was no stranger to the police. He spent nearly eight years in prison for raping a 17 year old girl. There, and there were some other reasons that, and if, there's some other reasons that that was eight years besides the rape, but That was the big chunk of his time. He also, um, had convictions for petty theft, assault, more probation violations, grand theft, and burglary. So he, yeah. Well known. Rapsheet Hall was also charged with escape after he left a prison dairy in 1994. He was sentenced an additional one to three years for that escape. So that's what I'm saying. It was, he was originally in jail for that rape, but he was working. I didn't even know. A work
Stephanierelease. It's, it's essentially slave labor, but it's, it's under the Constitution. It's legal.
DaniI didn't even know, I mean it makes sense where it's at, but I didn't even know, because it was a prison dairy. It wasn't like he was working at a dairy on work release, it was like a prison
Stephaniedairy. Best way to get the cheapest labor you'll ever get, and it was probably one of the best, better paying jobs. I almost had a job running a call center that's in a prison in Ontario. I almost, when I was job hunting, this was one of the job options, and they wanted to hire me, but I couldn't justify, for one, the commute, and two, also It's only 45 minutes for lottery tickets, Steph! I know, I know we can go 80 all the way there, pretty much. But also, working in a, it was a male prison, and they wanted me to manage this call center because, basically, These inmates are doing outbound calling. I forget what they were even selling or trying to get people to do, but it's one of the best paying jobs in the prison. So one of their selling points to me was these are the best behaved prisoners because if they do anything, they're gone. So you're working with
Danithe best of the best. I said it for you. I know you wanted to say it, and I said it for you. I was still
Stephanielike,
Daniuh.
StephanieI feel like I could do this job, but do I want to? I've never been in an environment like that, so.
DaniMinus the commute, I, I don't even, If the commute was not even an issue, which people listening from other states are gonna be like, oh, you had a 45 minute commute? Go fuck yourself.
StephanieCause sometimes it's a two lane. So if anything goes wrong. You're gonna double it. Once you make it past Middleton, you're fine. You know this stuff. I know, I know. But overall, this is the reason it was even paying more than the job that I took. And I was just like, I don't know if that's for me. And I'm glad. I'm happy with how everything's turned out. Yeah, there was other reasons. It wasn't necessarily that. But that's, it's very cheap labor. But this was the best paying job that the prison, prison had. So these inmates, were vying for this job.
DaniMinding their P's
Stephanieand
DaniQ's. Mind your P's and Q's. And you know, I, I'm saying, cause a lot of these inmates, you just sit and rot in jail as they should for their crimes. So to get out and be able to be productive in some way, fresh air,
Stephanieteam.
DaniAnd
Stephaniecows are fucking cute. Like.
DaniOh. Do you know I have baby cows? I know you did. And they really Okay, I'm gonna go on a tangent. I, I would have, I would pick up, drop calves. I swear when they mooed it sounded like they were saying mom. They do. And feeding them by a bottle. Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. And if you even walk by them and they're slightly hungry, they are grabbing your fingers and like almost swallowing your hands. So anyways, they're adorable. so did he
Stephanieride a cow out of here or what? Like how did, I wish I had more details about how he was
DaniI didn't, I
Stephaniekind of
Danithink it was a, well, I think it was probably
Stephaniejust a walk off. They just walk away and don't come back. Again, y'all want to escape so bad and you don't have any plans for what you're going to do.
DaniAnd you know, even let's just be gracious and say it was 24 hours. What are you gonna do? You have no money. He was not living it up. He was probably deathly afraid of being caught. And
Stephanieagain, it's not a Shawshank here. We're not,
Daniyou're not going to the bank and pulling out millions of dollars and the warden shoots himself. Okay. That's not what happens here. Clearly. In April, DNA evidence linked Hall in the death of Lynn, the flat attendant. He was charged with kidnapping, rape, and first degree murder. Hallelujah DNA! Thank you. Fuck yeah! So listen to this bullshit. I'm so mad about this. Okay. Hall had fallen through the cracks of a new law. In In 1997, the Idaho legislature began requiring convicted rape and murderers, along with 20 other violent offenses, to submit to DNA testing. This is like right after OJ. Every time I
Stephaniethink of DNA, I just think of OJ, because that's when it was like. You're going to be part of our catalog now. That was. That was when CODIS first came up. It was so big. You have to have the info to make it work. So a lot of states were trying to have things like this to be like, if you're out here doing any violent crime or doing an ex, and they all kind of classified it differently, your DNA is going to be on record. So, if you did a murder 20 years ago, whoopsie, you're fucked. You're fucked. Which, I like this.
DaniGive us your body juice. Absolutely deserved. Your body juice? Give us your body juice. We want to know what you fuckers are up to. Mmhmm. But, because Hall had completed his sentence for the rape, the 1991 rape, before the program started, his DNA was never collected. That's it.
StephanieBecause they were, he did the crime, he did the time. So they're like. But he
Daniwas not out of prison. He had completed the sentence for the rape conviction. But he
Stephaniehad the escape. He was
Daniserving time for the escape. So
Stephaniehe would have known much sooner. So and again, I mean. That's a fucking fail. Yeah, it
Daniis. That was a fail. Because it was two and a half years. And he might have gotten away with it. If he wasn't a fucking dick and murdered another woman unnecessar Oh! Well, murder's always unnecessary. Well, murder's unnecessary. Um, yeah. He,
Stephaniethey could've nailed him. He scraped by by the skin of his teeth. He really did. But then, you had to go and fuck around again and now you're finding out. Fuck around and find out. See ya.
DaniIt's just not a good person. No. October 12, 2004, Hall is on trial for the death of Lynn. Prosecutors said Lynn was killed just steps away from her room at the Doubletree Hotel near the Main Street Bridge. And just to get an idea, this is truly downtown. Yeah. And it makes sense while she, why she was like, I'm gonna go for a walk. There's so many businesses accessible. Yeah, so many bars. There's food place at the, museum's right there. She's like, I'm just going to go out and she was almost back at her hotel room.
StephanieThat's so frustrating.
DaniOkay. Trigger warning. Here we go. I'm going to, I try not to get into too much detail, but Lynn was beaten so badly that she would have died from blood loss if she hadn't been strangled first. That is so fucked up. The items found at the junior high next to Carl's Jr. had attempted to be burned.
StephanieDang. Another, you know, I've heard of other cases where people just fail to burn things. And it's like, you're half assing it. That shit ain't gonna help you.
DaniAnd a body is hard to burn. I think I could achieve burning a purse and ID. You incompetent fuck. Yes,
StephanieI agree. A lot of people don't realize what it takes to burn a body. Mm hmm. But a purse and an ID, you're being dumb and lazy. I mean. Ineffective. It isn't that hard.
DaniNope. Paul's girlfriend was working at the fast food chain at the time. He has a girlfriend? Don't know much about her, but I'm probably saying sis, you escaped something. Yeah. Like, you gotta pass. So you better be doing some good shit with your life. Because.
StephanieIt's so crazy to think about. It really is. How close. And there's so many cases where this happens, where even the girlfriend is like, I would have never expected it. And this is another thing where it's this is why I think we should, for the most part, believe women and victims as much as we can, because people are able, I've had people treat me wonderfully and then find out and see actual evidence of how they treat their partner. And I'm like, oh, everything you're, you're doing, when we're interacting as friends is a complete farce. It's a lie. You, you play this complete other person and then when you're with so and so.
DaniBut even with, like, the instance of the false reporting, I, kudos, the Boise Police Department did something right there. Yeah. They believed her, they went, and that's. They mobilized everything. And that's how it should be. Unfortunately, people lie. It's not a song, people lie. Flight attendant Diane Hansel, Lynn's co worker, said Lynn had asked her if she wanted to go for a walk on the Greenbelt that day. There is just so many. Let me just tell you, there is some circumstances that you're just like, one different decision or choice. The butterfly effect. Eh. So she had asked, Lynn had asked her if she wanted to go for a walk on the Greenbelt that day, but she said she was tired. And these flight attendants, some, they're getting up sometimes at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning. Valid. Yeah. She's like, I'm tuckered. Or some
Stephaniepeople just aren't the ones to, that want to go explore. They might have been there before or that's just not their thing. That would have been me.
DaniLike, dude, give me, give me two cocktails and like a movie I've watched 500 times and I'll be asleep because I have to be at the airport at 7 o'clock in the morning, which means I have to be up at 5. Like, no, I'm gonna go nap. So, I mean, it's,
Stephanieit's just crazy how this all comes together though. Sorry, Diane.
DaniShe also testified the only reason Lynn was on that particular flight. Was that she had switched flights after a co worker had requested it. She's like all of
Stephaniethese unplannable things.
DaniShe's like I got you. Oh, yeah, whatever reason that just helping out Yeah, it makes you sick.
StephanieYeah
DaniProsecutors stated Lynn was hit several times in the head and was incapacitated But the injuries were not fatal. The jury watched almost three hours of Hall's interrogation Where he admitted to doing meth and heroin
StephanieHeroin wasn't even popular around here at that time. You were really trying.
DaniAnd he stated he must have been angry at something. Okay, don't kill someone about it! We're not murdering! We're being angry! Where's your therapist? And I'm sorry, to be like
StephanieI must have been angry about something. That's your excuse? You can't, if it was that impactful for you, and you can't even name what it was. Uh, sure, bro. He said
DaniHe didn't remember the murder but was having some flashbacks that made him suspect maybe he was involved. I'm sorry. No
Stephaniedrugs Drugs. Yeah, but um still no
DaniHowever
Stephaniefucked up you are this should stick out in your flashbacks or whatever Like I feel like that's a cop out just personally I feel like you remember beating the shit out of someone, even if you're blackout drunk, most people still remember getting in a fight.
DaniYeah, if I'm super drunk, I might not remember Laughing at a joke or dropping a drink or whatever if I'm get to that point, which I'd like to say It's been, I've grown up now I've grown up We
Stephaniedon't do that no more but
Daniyou
StephanieSomething as significant as a fight no matter where it's from. Like do you
Daniremember getting pulled over by the police? No You might have a problem. Yeah. You're, or you're a big giant fucking fat mouth.
StephanieAnd you had enough cognizance to try to burn a purse and shirt or breadie.
DaniHe didn't remember nothing. Okay. The defense did not offer any evidence or testimony in the trial. That's weird. And that's
Stephaniekind of.
DaniYou know why? Because they want fucking appeals. That's it. During closing arguments, the defense is trying to convince the jury that if Hall did kill Lynn, it was not premeditated.
StephanieOkay.
DaniHall was found guilty of first degree murder, kidnapping, and rape. Go jury. During the sentencing phase, the woman that he had raped in 1991 testified. This broke my heart to relive this for the sake of Lynn to go in and say What she went through to make sure that the jury understood what a horrible person he was Kudos to her.
StephanieYeah, cuz most people don't we know it would be
Daniso hard like no I don't want to relive that like he went to jail. I've Working on myself, but to reopen that wound You
StephanieI can't imagine being a victim of his and then seeing that he killed someone and knowing that that could have been you. So yeah, big props because a lot of people don't report for very obvious reasons because the likelihood of anything happening is disgustingly low. So she did it. She got a comp she did what she could to try to protect other people. Unfortunately, it didn't protect them for nearly long enough. And he's out and about being a rapey mcraper out here and now she's retestifying. And good for her. And
Danishe testified through tears, strong woman, describing her attack. Holla told her, I'm going to bash your head and throw you in the river. She says she remembers trying to fight. This is where I'm going to tell you this guy was definitely on lots of drugs. Hall heard the victim's name on a police scanner and said they needed to leave the area. The only people in 1991 that had police scanners I shouldn't say this, but I feel this way. The
Stephaniemajority. Drugs! Criminals. No. Well, I did know one person that they're Son was extremely in and out of jail, and they had a police scanner, but it was because he was on what? Threats!
Danithat victim then ran, jumping over fences to get away. This guy's such a fucking idiot, by the way, like, Oh my god, they're looking for you! We must run! Let's shut the fuck up. But I'm glad she got away. I'm, because, looking forward, Clearly, it escalated. I'm not gonna go into it. He did bad things to her and she was there for a while.
StephanieFucking awful.
DaniHall's defense attorney said his child, his childhood was full of, trigger warning, here we go, sex abuse, incest, isolation, and hunger.
StephanieLook, that'll do it. It's not an excuse, but you see, hurt people hurt people, dude.
DaniI really already have this conversation to myself in my head. Because they're looking for a mitigating factor. Basically, they're trying not to get him the death penalty. And listen to this, you asshole parents, who don't give a fuck about your kids. I have an opinion. This is what, I'm not saying you created this, what these people end up being. You're surely not fucking helping. No. You're surely not helping. Be a fucking responsible parent. Look at your kid. Know what's going on.
StephanieKnow about your family that's interacting with your kid. And keep very close eye on that because for the most part, any sexual abuse is someone your kid knows. So, being super cognizant of that.
DaniAnd I do believe, I mean, his sisters testified. Hull's sisters both recounted during the sentencing hearing. About the abuse from their older brother Shannon this guy and he was he was often left to care for all the younger siblings He was the oldest brother, but he picked on Hall the most he would taunt him about his appearance and clothes until Hall would explode Just right Along with beatings from his father Shannon would also beat Hall. I know that he his childhood and there's a lot more detail You It wasn't pretty.
StephanieAnd a lot of times there is one kid that is the biggest scapegoat, even if all are being abused. It's like a
Daniscapegoat syndrome. I think that's what it's called. It's like there's one kid.
StephanieGabriel Fernandez. Oh my god. Like, and there was one around here. I watched that, it was fucking horrible. No, I watched it too. But the other kids are often even encouraged. And it keeps the heat off them, so it's a survival tactic for them. I don't know what the age difference was. I'm not excusing any of it from any other sibling. You feel bad for
Danithe child, not for the adult,
Stephaniebut it's not an excuse, but it makes it understandable how someone would go into this life. Because
Daniwho is looking out for this child? No one. No one. A cousin testified that, I mean, this older brother would get everybody calling him names and like, let's pick on this guy. Like hazing. Yeah, it was. And they would do it brutally. Also, there was testimony. This is the piece of shit his mother was. Um, that it might have been his stepmother. Uh, I didn't write this down. He was a bed wetter. And when he went to go get on the bus, which is classic. A huge red
Stephanieflag sign that something
Daniis not know what she did?
StephanieWhat?
DaniInstead of going and getting him help. I'm not making excuses by the way. I'm just saying what a piece of shit his mother was. When he went to go get on the bus, she would hang the wet sheets out the window. So that everybody knew he pissed the bed. That's how poor
StephanieQuality
Daniparenting.
StephanieCome on.
DaniYou fucking assholes. ruining children. And it's no excuse. I'm not saying we all have stories. We've, everybody can, well, I'm not everybody. There's those, there's those people that add great parents and a great childhood, but we can all chalk something up to our behavior or our activities or why we do the things we do. Simple things, um, to our childhood. Give a kid a chance.
StephanieKids are kids.
DaniGive a kid a chance. So I just saying his family was a piece of shit He
Stephaniedidn't need to do all this about it though. No, I can understand the drugs. I mean, that's a common pathway But they're clearly to inflict the same on someone else. Don't fucking do that
Danithe jury handed Hall the sentence of death for Lynn's murder He also received two life sentences for kidnapping and rape A stone monument was placed across from the spot where Lin was murdered on the Boise River. It has a bronze relief of Lin's face that was created by her husband, along with an excerpt from a poem Lin wrote. This gal, the talent. The quote was, All things have a reason. At some point in time, we return whence we came. And it's a very large stone. It's like 1800 pounds. But then they had the bronze relief that he created. And then her poem is beautiful. I just thought that was beautiful. We're gonna move to two thousand and fucking seven.
StephanieOkay.
DaniRight? Like, we got Cheryl.
StephanieYes. Cheryl still needs to be answered for.
DaniThe trial for Cheryl is delayed several times due to Hull's new defense team. Because I mean, if I was convicted of the death penalty,
StephanieI would want a new defense team. Yeah. And this, but this is the one he admitted to, right?
DaniYes. Yes. This is the one he admitted to and not the DNA evidence. The struggle is real. I'm sorry.
StephanieNo, with having to keep track of these two cases.
DaniUh, so it's delayed several times, uh, due to Halston's new defense team. They needed I'm gonna just fucking start that all over. In 2007, the trial for Cheryl is delayed several times Oh, I just fucked that up again. Do you want a break? Yes! Break.
StephanieWhat if I need a lighter? It's like my
DaniIt's
Stephanielike a first aid kit.
DaniOh, I'm hurting so bad inside. Okay. We had to go refill cocktails. We had a good laugh. Um, and Steph almost forgot her emotional support purse. Luckily. I have purse. Luckily, I have purse. And she listed about 15 fucking things that she might possibly need while we're recording this podcast. So, anyways. So,
Stephaniechapstick, Altoids, gum, Tums, acid reflux girlies. Where are you?
DaniI'm going to start calling it your emotional support purse. It is. Let's make
Stephaniea
Danisticker.
StephanieMy emotional support purse.
DaniAre we green? Okay, we're green. We're green. We're ready to find out. I was fucking telling my story. Okay.
Stephanie07 Cheryl
DaniOh, I'm hurting. I'm out of breath laughing at you. Okay. The trial for Cheryl is delayed several times due to Hall's new defense team, which it's very common. I'm just going to say, if my defense team Got me the death penalty. I'm gonna try something. And provided no evidence or witnesses. Give me, give me a new team. Fair, fair. Sure. It's very common for them to step down. The defense need, they needed more time to prepare. Because, oh, we're, we're new. So the trial was originally set in 2005. Defense attorneys are asking for the trial to be moved due to publicity. this video. Here we go. During the jury selection for the 2007 scheduled trial, the statesmen ran a headline in the paper regarding Hall's previous conviction. Both sides agreed the trial needed to be moved. Okay.
StephanieTherefore They're like, yeah, okay, sure.
DaniI'm trying to
Stephanieavoid another appeal. So sure.
DaniOf the 31 jurors that were already selected, they had to release 21 due to the news coverage. So the new jury will be bused in from Gooding County, but the trial will stay in Ada County. Finally, opening arguments start in October, and the prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, as they should. Jeff Carlson, Cheryl's boyfriend of 17 years, testified. This was her partner. He said that he and Cheryl had gotten to a verbal argument on the way home from the bar, And when they came home, she said, I'm out and she left around 11, 11 o'clock to go back out. This is the things that are like little, just tiny things that led to this trigger warning here, because this pissed me off, because he was also, Jeff was also asked about their sex life. I hate this part. For what? I hate it. He was also asked about their sex life, if she liked, if they were participating in rough sex.
StephanieOh my, I fucking, fuck
Daniyou, fuck you. All
Stephaniethe defense attorneys that this is their, like, modus operandi of, like, you get a rape case.
DaniMaybe she wanted it. Shut the
Stephaniefuck up. In the walking, in the bushes, I can guarantee you. Shut the fuck
Daniup. Shut up. I hated that. I just, in my notes, I'm like, ugh. I was just, I was so mad, like. They always go there, though. They always go there. This is why people don't report a rape. This was his partner of 17 years. And he's getting up there having to defend her about what, They did in the bedroom. Go fuck yourself. This is why people don't report. Jeff said, Yeah, that, that wasn't her personality. That was not, to even have to justify it is bullshit. But he was like, yeah, no. No, that's not her, she's, she's not a cheater, she's not She's never, like, that's not her, because that's what they were going with. And they've been together 17 years. Yeah. He would know. He would know. Another man testified, Daryl Lady, that he had saw Cheryl with Hall around 3 a. m. before she disappeared. He said she was slurring a little, but didn't appear scared. And Cheryl had asked him to call her a cab, which he did. And this is back in the whole, this is back into the whole people know people. So he knew her as a bartender around town. So he, Daryl saw Cheryl and was like, hey, sis, you want to, you want me to call you a cab? And he did. Cheryl and Hoggle started to walk away and Daryl was like, hey, he reminded her that the cab was on its way. To that address. She told him she didn't want it anymore. So sad. These are just the small choices and I can say as a, as a young adult being that inebriated, yeah. I see something like this, I'm like, that could have totally happened to me. Me
Stephanietoo.
DaniI'm totally fine. I'm good. I'm having fun. And you don't even know the person you, yeah. The defense did not call any witnesses and Hall did not testify. After 10 days of testimony, the case was handed over to the jury. Hall was convicted of first degree murder and rape. The defense attorney chesting. Immediately asked for a mistrial. He said the jury foreman was aware that Hall was already on death row and the entire trial was tainted. It was national news. I'm sure. But the juror's wife had told him that Hall was a death row inmate and he He told his wife to stop talking and went directly to the judge.
StephanieThis is so tough.
DaniAnd, and the judge like. Yeah, okay. And kept him on the jury. Hall was later sentenced to a second death penalty. And this is the problem with that. Because he allowed it. This is just going to be appeals. This is what's coming. Appeals. Appeals. Appeals. This cocksucker. Ready? 2024. Appeals. Appeals. Appeals. Appeals. Appeals. And look, if you want me, please let us know.
StephanieWe need feedback here, cause
DaniI have no problem running through all of the bullshit appeals. That's, that's kinda how I feel about it. and there's some cases that I have lined up, valid appeals, but these guys are just grasping for straws at this point.
StephanieSo a lot of the appeals don't add a lot to the story. I mean, this is 20 fucking years. It's par for the course. On a death penalty case, there's always going to be appeals for little to even sometimes no reason at all. So if
Daniyou guys please write us at the Lethal Library at gmail. You can comment on our socials. If you guys want a detailed rundown of the appeals, no problem doing it because I run them. but I just feel like it doesn't really add to the story. Unless there's something egregious or wild in it, yes. This, I feel like might have been a little egregious. Okay, but you got it. Right, and I'm, but his, they've been turned down, turned down, turned down, turned down. So, as of current 2024, that's it. This year. Paul is now 53. And is currently still sitting on death row.
StephanieAww. I hope y'all heard the sarcasm in that. Dripping.
DaniAww. There was testimony, from Lynn's sister. I believe it was Lynn. Okay. This is where I just go off. I didn't write this down, so sorry. she was so sad that it took somebody else getting murdered to find her sister's murderer. Um, and why in the fuck didn't they take his
StephanieDNA? Yeah, that's a huge misstep for the criminal justice system. And again, just like we said, the girl he raped in the early 90s, that probably, I, I'm just guessing here, but I know this is the reason a lot of girls do go through with reporting and going through a trial. Is because they don't want this to happen to someone else. They know how they're going to be portrayed. They know that their whole sex life is going to be questioned. Any partner they've ever had, they get ripped to shreds for what the whole, what were you wearing? Why were you out that late? Why were you drunk? As if that's an excuse for someone to violently rape you, right? Like, and so for her to have gone through the shit show of getting someone convicted for rape. And then seeing that someone else suffers that plus dying and then two more people and then the family of Lynn being like, well, he wasn't caught quick enough, even with all this media attention, all this police attention. Wasn't caught quick enough, he was able to do it to somebody else. It just makes you sick.
DaniIt really does. It's very sad. Cause these women were just walking the greenbelt, having a few beers and playing some shuffleboard. I've done that! Me too. Like, let's just go. Get in a fight with your spouse, go off walking. Bye. I've done it. Wow, what a shame. A little liquid, a little liquid courage makes it way easier to just be like, yeah, you're a dick, bye. I'm not dealing with you. And for it to end in such a horrible, these were not, and I did not go into super detail, these were horrible, horrible deaths. This, they fought, they fought, they absolutely did fight. and there was evidence to prove that even after They were incapacitated, they came to, like it was, it was horrible, so, I'm trying not to get into those. It's,
StephanieI feel like some of it's too gruesome and graphic, and some people listen to hear that stuff, and we're, that's not our gig. You
Daniguys, imagine, you guys have already imagined the worst and it's there, so. It's the worst. Anyways, uh, fuck you Hall. Fuck you Hall. I hope you're enjoying your five hours out of your fucking cell a week. You're lucky that Creech doesn't have his
Stephaniefucking toothbrush razor out anymore. Did they repair the mesh? Did they? I'm just saying. I almost wish they didn't because.
DaniWe could use a little slicey dicey on this one.
StephanieFuck you Hall.
DaniAlrighty, guys. Well, like, subscribe, follow.
StephanieWe love that stuff. Give us some
Danifeedback. Give us feedback. You can either send us an email, uh, at the Lethal Library at gmail or post on our socials. We're looking for some feedback. What do you like? Do you want more detail? Um, also just your thoughts on these. Assholes that, uh, we've been covering.
StephanieYeah, and we've had people that have had personal experiences with some of the cases we've covered. So if that's the case, or if you have interesting details that you remember from living through the case, because just like I was telling Danny how much I remember this case, even being pretty young, but hearing about it on the TV all the time. If you have something, We're not walking the green
Danibelt. I mean, it was really a scary thing.
StephanieNo. We're So, but anyway, thank you guys for listening, um, once again, 10 4 rubber ducky, fuck yeah!
