Yesterday in AI. Hi folks, this is Yesterday in AI, your daily digest of everything happening in the world of AI in roughly 10 minutes. I'm Mike Robinson. It's Saturday, July 25th, and this was the week AI stopped hovering around the edges of your life and started asking for the keys to everything. Your medical records, your voice, your daily coding workflows, and a genuinely staggering pile of Google's cash. Let's get into it. We start in the doctor's office because as of Thursday, so does ChatGPT. OpenAI officially rolled out health and ChatGPT to every US adult, a full unrestricted launch for everyone 18 and up. But here's the part that will make you sit up and pay attention. You can now link your Apple Health data and your actual medical records, including major health network systems like Epic and Oracle Health, directly into the chat. So instead of typing, I have a headache and I'm tired, and getting the standard WebMD word salad, the model reads your actual lab results, your personal medical history, and your daily fitness trends, answering your questions with your real chart right in front of it. It's the fundamental difference between asking a stranger on the street about a knee injury versus handing a board certified physician your complete medical file. Same question, radically different answer. Under the hood, it's powered by GPT-5.6 Soul and GPT-5.5 Instant. OpenAI is explicitly addressing the privacy elephant in the room up front. Your connected medical records and any health conversations will not be used to train their models, nor will they feed targeted advertising algorithms. They desperately need that trust, because if you have been following the show, OpenAI first attempted a health integration back in January and it largely flopped. That early iteration was thin, accuracy was questionable, and they pulled it back to completely rebuild. After six months of refining and testing, this is their second swing and they brought a much bigger bat. This is the exact threshold where health data governance stops being a theoretical privacy debate and becomes an immediate consumer reality. Millions of everyday people, from patients managing chronic conditions to parents tracking family health history, are about to pipe their most sensitive medical records into a commercial chatbot simply because it's insanely useful. The utility is undeniable, but the broader exposure and personal security footprint are just as massive. As AI moves deeper into personal health, how we interact with these systems is triggering a secondary interface war. On Thursday, Anthropic and OpenAI both escalated their voice capabilities in unison, like two heavyweights trading simultaneous punches on the same card. Anthropic brought Claude Voice to its flagship models, Opus and Sonnet. Spoken interactions used to be restricted to lighter, faster models, which meant talking to Claude felt noticeably less intelligent than typing to it. Now, high-level strategic conversations can happen verbally across their top-tier brains, with the ability to switch models mid-sentence without dropping the conversational thread. OpenAI answered immediately by pushing its GPT Live voice architecture out to desktop environments. GPT Live operates on full duplex audio, allowing the system to listen and speak simultaneously, mirroring a natural human phone call rather than the old walkie-talkie format where you speak, pause, and wait for a response. More importantly, the desktop release introduces voice-driven agent control. You can verbally direct an AI agent to execute complex tasks inside ChatGPT work or codex, watching the jobs run autonomously in the background while you continue speaking. Voice interfaces are becoming a critical battleground because they remove physical friction. Typing forces you to stop what you are doing, sit down, and stare at a screen, whereas voice allows AI to seamlessly accompany you while driving, cooking, or walking the dog. The lab that delivers the most natural conversational interface ultimately commands the highest share of your daily attention and attention minutes. That rapid expansion of ambient AI raises the fundamental economic question: who is financing this immense physical infrastructure? Alphabet provided a stark answer during their quarterly earnings call, and the raw numbers left Wall Street visibly uneasy. Google Cloud Revenue surged 82% to $24.8 billion, pushing their cloud backlog, contracted work awaiting delivery, to an astounding $514 billion. That half trillion dollar demand pipeline demonstrates that enterprise appetite for cloud compute is very real and accelerating. However, the cash required to service that demand is staggering. Alphabet poured a record $44.9 billion into capital expenditures in a single quarter, primarily directed toward custom AI chips, server architecture, and massive data center builds. That aggressive spending pushed free cash flow into negative territory at minus $5.9 billion, marking Alphabet's first cash burn in over two decades. To cap it off, management raised full-year CapEx guidance to approximately $205 billion and signaled that capital investment will climb even higher in 2027. Google is laying digital railroad track as fast as humanly possible, betting everything that the revenue trains will arrive on schedule. The $514 billion backlog proves the demand exists, but the negative cash flow reveals they are spending cash faster than those trains can pull into the station. Investors reacted with hesitation, sending the stock lower. Google currently represents the entire AI economy in miniature, enormous demand, unprecedented capital expenditure, and a market divided on whether this strategy represents visionary genius or an unsustainable capital bubble. While tech titans construct physical infrastructure, smart capital is moving to control the routing layers that sit on top of it. Stripe is reportedly in talks to acquire OpenRouter, the popular API switchboard developers use to route queries across various AI models. OpenRouter allows developers to maintain a single integration point while dynamically switching between Claude, GPT, Gemini, or open source alternatives based on cost, speed, and benchmark performance. It acts as an essential toll booth on the model highway. Stripe already sits between merchants and payments. Acquiring OpenRouter allows them to sit directly between software developers and model providers, monetizing every single API request that passes through. That infrastructure expansion stands in stark contrast to what is happening on the developer ground floor, where rapid AI adoption is creating hidden operational friction. A series of recent industry reports highlighted a growing crisis in software engineering. Accelerating code generation with AI is quietly degrading overall code quality. Automated tools are generating higher volumes of subtle software bugs, while the sheer velocity of incoming code leads to sloppier human code reviews. These automated workflows, often dubbed software factories, are churning out code at factory speed, but many are failing under the weight of accumulated technical debt. Writing code was historically the primary bottleneck, but AI made syntax generation virtually free while leaving architecture, logic review, and system integration just as difficult as before. Open source maintainers are bearing the brunt of this influx, drowning in low-quality AI-generated pull requests that one maintainer accurately described as spam with a compiler. Creation became dirt cheap overnight, but human engineering judgment remains scarce and expensive. The friction surrounding model development is escalating from software engineering into high-stakes international geopolitics. Tensions erupted into a formal diplomatic dispute following allegations surrounding Moonshot's flagship open weight model, Kimi K3. U.S. officials in Anthropic accuse the Chinese AI firm of developing Kimi K3 by distilling output from Anthropic's unreleased Fable V model. Distillation occurs when a smaller or competing model is trained on the outputs of an advanced model to replicate its reasoning capabilities without incurring the massive original training costs. Moonshot firmly denied the allegations, and several independent analysts questioned whether the release timelines support the claim. Nevertheless, the U.S. Commerce Department initiated an investigation into whether restricted U.S. semiconductors were accessed to train the model. The controversy is threatening to derail planned bilateral AI safety talks scheduled for September. Meanwhile, a coalition of over 20 major tech firms, including NVIDIA, Microsoft, Meta, and Palantir, signed an open letter urging U.S. policymakers not to impose restrictive bans on openweight models. Conspicuously absent from the letter were OpenAI and Anthropic, highlighting a deep strategic divide between labs pushing for open ecosystems and those seeking tighter regulatory controls.
