Yeah, cause they don't help anybody except I mean, they're really good for the environment, but they really don't help people at all.

Good yeah, good job. So we're at the time Try harder next time, Jason. Yeah, chris and I are going to share a couple little stories of the week about Bunsen and Beaker. Then we're going to go to Scarlett for a little mini interview about what Scarlett does and then we'll open up the floor to the community to share their stories about their pets. So, chris, do you want to start with the big news about Bunsen, to keep everybody updated?

So we came back from comic-con on sunday. Everything was fine, um, and then sunday evening bunsen got up and he was limping really, really badly no, not sunday.

It wasn't sunday, it was monday it was monday.

I lied yeah. Would you like to tell the story, jason?

No, no, no, no, monday it was Go ahead.

Okay, everything was great, everything was awesome. We came back from Comic-Con and sometimes, after a long car rides, bunsen gets a bit stiff. We've noticed this. This seems to be a recurring trend and so on Monday we thought nothing of it. And then he got up and he was limping Monday evening when we got home from work and it was really kind of bad, like more so than just a typical. He's having some trouble, he's a bit stiff. It just seemed a little bit more than that. But it could have just been that Bunsen is a bit of a diva. He has played us before where he just fakes an injury. It's true, he is an injury faker. And then so we thought, well, we're just going to keep an eye on it. And then we kept an eye on it and another eye on it, and another eye on it, and then finally we said, no, we're going to take him to the vet just to be sure that nothing is going wrong.

Jason got the pleasure of taking Bunsen to the vet Usually I do, yeah, but Jason was able to go and they had a look at his foot, his leg, his right leg, and they think it might be potentially a partial tear or a full tear of the ACL.

Which is a cruciate in the dog. He said that dogs don't necessarily have a acl yeah yeah, so he did the bone thing with you?

Speaker 2: 12:14

did he show you the bone thing?

Speaker 3: 12:15

uh, no, no, they. The one vet was that wasn't her orthopedic stuff, wasn't her specialist specialty. So she's like this is what I suspect I'm gonna get. Um, uh, what's his name? Uh, greg, no, the other, the other guy to take a look at the knee, bunsen's knee, and then then she came back and she's like, okay, well, he's pretty sure it's, it might be, he's pretty sure it's a partial tear. He's not a 100% sure if it's a full tear, because you never really know really, until you start like, do surgery, until you start to do surgery. And so what we have Bunsen on is some painkillers and some anti-inflammatories and the thing is to wait five to six days and see if there's no improvement, well then it's probably a full tear and a Bunsen will require surgery for repair. But it could heal on its own. The vet said lots of dogs with rest, it just it goes away, and that would be because it's a partial tear and after rest it heals. So we're hopeful it's a partial tear, but we're ready to. You know we're good to go to support him if he does need surgery, because we're ready to. You know we're good to go to support him if he does need surgery, because we want him to be not in pain and limping around.

And, um, I did some research on it and a lot of people have been giving me helpful advice on on the comments about you know their dogs have gone through it. It's a fairly common injury in dogs Not like every dog gets it, but it's fairly common. So, yeah, so that's the news about Bunsen not the greatest news, but he doesn't look like he's in pain, right, chris? Like he's not, he's not crying, he's and and he's actually moving really good today. So maybe it's the pain meds and the anti-inflammatory or maybe it's getting better. So that's the Bunsen update. Do we have any more big updates, chris?

He was running around and we're like Bunsen, don't run around because Rafi and Polly came over today. Yeah, and that was very exciting for the dog Speaker was like crying with her excitement, like really excited to see the kids, and Bunsen was like what Perfect, let's just, uh, run around, let's do chase and we're like don't run. And he's like I'm gonna run, I can run no, and so we're trying to settle him and it was just a bit of a gong show shenanigans happening but they love the kids yeah yeah and I guess the last couple days it's been.

it's been kind of sad to leave Bunsen at home on walks. We've been able to take Beaker and Beaker's a great dog but we do miss having Bunsen on walks. But Beaker does love going on walks because she gets to swim in the giant pond the beaver has made which Chris has backed up a ton right Like we're seeing the whole backing up of the creek area now.

Yes, we are. So when we went around the bend we were like whoa, what is all this water? And the beaver Norbert is doing his job.

Yeah, there's ducks moving in down there too, so that's kind of cool. I think there's a family of ducks that have moved in just because, like when beavers do that, they change, they change the entire uh, you know, ecosystem we've had ducks before we have had ducks before, yeah oh my goodness so we have jamie.

Jamie, one of of Jamie's dogs, is attacking water, and then we've got Kuno and Chesney on live right now. Okay, so we'll keep our stories rather short. I think we can go now to our guests, our main guest today, and that's Scarlett Rockwood. So, scarlett, again, would you mind introducing yourself to everybody, to people on audio and people on live video?

Hey, I'm Scarlett Rockwood. I'm the owner and founder of First Social, which is a marketing agency for pet industry businesses, and I work with local shelters to help get more social visibility for their adoptable pets.

So that's my main question for you, and folks can connect with you if they're wanting to know more, a little bit about the business end of what you do. But we talked like I was on your podcast and we were talking about how you use social media to get dogs adopted, and could you tell us a little bit about what that is and how you do that?

Speaker 4: 16:44

Yeah, absolutely so. A lot of shelters the first thing that you see they come in. They do like their intake photos, which sometimes they do a decent job at, but most of the time it's like the photo they could snap in two seconds, either in the lobby of the animal shelter or in the back of the truck before they even get inside.

And it's not the most flattering. It doesn't show the animal's personality at all. So those um, only like the most adoptable pets are going to, you know, get out through those photos or through someone coming to visit the shelter. And the ones who end up staying there longer, they need a little bit more. I mean marketing for the dog themselves, right? So what I do is with my local shelter and I advocate anyone who wants to do this as well is I'll go and I will take the dog that has been there the longest.

Luckily, our local shelter is no kill, so sometimes that could be a year or more that they've been there in the shelter and I'll take them out for the day, take them, you know, to the park, the pet store, to get a pup cup at Starbucks, whatever. I can think of that, I think will, you know, make their day great and give them a little bit of a de-stressor, and that in and of itself is just really great, you know, for the animal's mental health, and what you do by getting them out of that environment is it allows them to de-stress, it allows them to show their personality more, and I just take tons of photos and videos the whole day that I'm doing that, and then I will put them together and I'll create reels. I'll create, you know, photo packages. Sometimes I'm lucky enough to line up my schedule with my photographer and even get some like a professional photo shoot with them, but then I'll just send all of that back to the shelter for them to post as well, and I also put it up on all of my social media channels and you'd be amazed how much of a difference it makes.

Telling the story of you know, this is what our day together was like. These are the things he did great with. Like he really loved meeting other dogs or he was shy of other dogs. You know he really loved going to the store or he really loved playing in the water at the park. All those details help people get a picture of you know this being my dog and picturing what that would be like to adopt that pet. So, having all of that together, every pet that I have taken out for a doggy date has been adopted within like a month or two after I did that.

Oh, my goodness, what a good, what a cool, what a cool thing. And, of course, like, do you, do you use like trending audio on Instagram to make some of those reels pop?

Speaker 4: 19:28

I do for some of them, especially if there's like a really nice short clip that just happens to really suit it. But what I like to do more is just use my voiceover to tell the story of the pet's personality and of just what we did that day. Of the pet's personality and of just what we did that day. You know, I kind of like to think of it as like if I'm sitting and having coffee with one of my girlfriends and I'm talking about, you know, the first date with a new guy, how would I talk about it? Like I would talk about all the things that he did, right, all the things I was worried about, and I kind of talked the same way about the dog, you know.

Oh, he was really great walking on a leash, especially considering he's been in the shelter for a year, so I'm sure he has no leash training, um, but he still did an excellent job, um, he couldn't relax in the car ride though. So if you don't want a pit bull in your lap, you should probably have a good carrier or harness for car rides, that kind of thing, yeah, um, and it really gives people the opportunity to think about if this particular specific dog is a good fit for their family, right, and I think that makes, and just the act of making video on social, you know, I think we've all gotten the information drilled into us enough by now that, like, video is going to reach more people than photos at this point with all the algorithms, yeah. So just getting that out at all more people seeing that the pet is available has made a big difference.

I love that. Kelly, who's watching on Twitter video, says that's great. She just wanted to know are the dogs sad when you bring them back to the shelter at the end of the day, or do you feel like they just had a good day and they're very tired?

Usually it's the second, at least for the part that I see when I dropped them off, I've never had a pet act like they were anxious to go back in the building or anything like that.

For them. Like I said, I take the dogs who've been there the longest, so as far as they're concerned, is home right now um and a lot of them are just, you know, happy to be worn out. And it also gives them the knowledge that, like, going out might be more than just going to the vet to get their rabies shot.

Like because that's about the only other time they're taken out of the shelter is when they need to go to the vet to update their vaccines or if they're sick yeah um, so doing that, it also encourages more people to do it as well, because the leash and the harness that I use when I take them out is bright yellow and it has adopt me written all over it. So I get to talk to a lot of people about what I'm doing that day and they don't assume that it's my dog. So more people come to the shelter to do more doggy dates because they now know that program exists.

Oh, that's such a good idea. And then there was one dog that I didn't even have to post on social media because someone I met that day went and adopted him the next day.

People see you videotaping the dog and and they see the adopt me and they're like, oh, they get, they know what you're doing, right, they get it right away.

Speaker 4: 22:25

Yeah, exactly, and this was actually an employee at the pet store that I like to take them to and, like all three or four of the employees that were on staff that day, just stop what they were doing. When we came to the door and just gave him all the love and one of them decided to take him home, oh, that's so great.

So I mean just the act of being able to take them out at all is great, but I would definitely advocate for taking the extra time to take all the photos and videos that you can and make sure that you put them out on all the channels you have access to, but also share them with the shelter, because a lot of the admins or volunteers who work on, you know, the shelter social media pages don't necessarily have time to get the content together, but if you give it to them, then they will post it there for the people who are already following the shelter and looking for adoptable animals as well.

You know, like this reminds me of oh, it was a while pre-COVID I think a shelter sorted all of the dogs into the different Hogwarts houses and that was extremely popular, went viral on social media. So, like the use of social media for good, like, especially with adopting these dogs, is such a with adoption. You know, sometimes that is not told to people who are adopting everything single time.

Yeah, I think that's very important because that avoids the issue of people who are adopting a dog and then not feeling like it fits into their family the way they thought it would and then bringing it back because it's just not the best environment for the dog or vice versa.

And a lot of that comes from overselling from the shelters and I understand why that's tempting to do.

But you know, one of the pieces of advice that I give a lot of shelters is when you do make that initial post or you put it on their web, put it up on your website that the pet is adoptable, you know.

Don't just say you know, you know this is a pit bull female who is heartworm negative and probably two years old, and leave it at that. Like, tell a pet story, talk about their personality, talk about you know everything you can that you know about them. You know from the few days that they've been there already and that will make a big difference. But a lot of them they try to sugarcoat the dog's personality when it's not something they think is super adoptable, like if a dog is food aggressive, they might say you know, I'm really greedy with my snacks and I'm like those are not the same things you need to be really clear so that someone you know, who is bringing that pet into a home with a toddler, is not going to call, you know, have a serious accident because they didn't know the situation that they were stepping into.

Yeah, and instead that dog can find the right home with somebody who's prepared, you know, to help them with that issue.

Right, yeah, that's the difference between life and death for the dog and an impossible extreme injury with a little person. Hi You're a rock star. You don't know me. I'm a special needs rescue and sanctuary and I have never had an animal returned. I do a lot of amputations here and they're usually have adoption pledges before they're medically cleared to go. It's because I tell the story and people get to really know these animals. They know right away they're getting special needs with me, but the personality has to shine through and I encourage my shelter to do that. I foster for a rescue, I do all their medical cases and I gave them a social media class which includes everything you discussed. Keep up the good work. In Herd News it's Star Wars Day. Both ends going at the same time but different directions. It was really cool. Barry has just about every birth defect out there and we're learning more every day. He now has a cataract, which it's not painful yet. We have to watch and see what happens to it. Or if the other eye starts to go bad too Long term, we are going to have to do something surgical. We just don't know which procedure yet, but it doesn't bother him at all. Um, the good news, benedict Cumberbatch. We found out what's going on with him. It's his kidneys. We're doing some adjusting of medications. Nothing to panic about.

Um, the hot off the press news is yesterday my team at Alpine Animal Hospital did two amputations on kittens one four weeks old, one five months old and they both came home to my house this afternoon. I'm going to fall in love with both of them because they're going to be here for a while, but they are going to be adoptable when they are medically cleared and emotionally ready to move on to a new family. Otherwise, I have such a full house right now.

We had obedience trials.

Oh, oh how did it go well. It was not our best weekend, actually I I I can't complain. Chesney earned her excellent rally title this weekend, which was, which was great and it's just. It was a really tough venue. Um, it's in their local hockey room. Accessibility was a bit of an issue. But the other issue is the dogs have never been in a spot where spectators were up high before oh, because they're normally on the same floor, right yes.

So poor chesney went to do a down and on her way down she came in eye contact with this child sitting in the first row eating cookies, and it became the world's slowest down. So it was a lot that sounds like a a lot.

It was a very busy venue. Normally we have the obedience dogs on one side and the confirmation dogs on another. In this case we had a confirmation ring on one side of us and the other obedience ring on the other side, so at any given point there would be 10 dogs running in a circle with owners making a lot of noise. And it was a lot, but it's again, it wasn't our best showing because we're not used to that. You can only train for so much. Yeah, but I also put her into the regular CKOC obedience and she did quite well yesterday. Today she did really well Now in CKOC, ckc obedience, first you do a healing pattern on leash and then you do an on leash healing pattern in a figure eight around two people.

And then you do an off leash healing pattern. You do a recall and a stand for exam where the dog has to stay standing and the judge comes and pats them down. But then they do a group sit. So they bring back six to eight dogs and everybody lines up. You take the leashes off, you put the leash behind you, you put your number behind you, you leave your dogs for 60 seconds for the sit, you return to the dog, then you put them in a down and you leave them for three minutes.

So and if anybody doesn't know Trixie, she's my Brussels Griffon um and we got her last year and we had a drive to Virginia because the breeder was in Tennessee but we met halfway and it was quite an adventure, to say the least.

And this week also was Trixie's first day of going to Dairy Queen and getting a pup cup, so I put that on video. It came with a little bone inside like a milk phone treat and it was so cute and they put the little bit of vanilla soft serve in it and her eyes went as big as quarters. She's like is that for me? And I'm like, yeah, and she, her eyes went as big as quarter. She's like is that for me? And I'm like, yeah, and I mean that dog. I had to use the bone as a spoon because she was slugging that stuff down like no tomorrow. And everybody was laughing because we thought we she'd get a brain freeze or something. But she, she fared out okay. She, she got a little sticky, but other than that she, uh, she loved it and it was fun because it was the first time she's ever really had a little bit of ice cream like that. So it was, it was a fun week. So that's our stories.

That's kind of like it, like it looks like a bowl, and then it has like a deeper bottom and she was like she just didn't care, she just stuck her whole snout in there and licked the bottom and you could see it through the plastic. And it was kind of funny because her tongue was going a mile a minute and we were. It was fun and happy to know that uh, ricky's doing better.

My other whippet story is one of the dog parks has these shrubby, bushy things which I'm not really sure what they are. Anyway, so this whippet is going warp speed and there's this other smaller dog behind it and whippets are incredibly agile. Yeah, so it zigged around, this bush and the small dog chasing it didn't make the turn. Oh no, oh no. Oh. There was this god-awful thump and this very, very confused-looking dog going. What the hell was that? And I swear he moved that bush a foot he hit so hard. Oh man, so that's my Whippet and uh being chased, or they are. They are a nice dog, they're very, but their speed, but their agility and their ability to make a tight turn is really quite phenomenal yeah, they're greyhounds, whippets, uh, border collies.

They're all like incredibly fast but also can turn on a dime. Yeah, that's just their, I think it's their. They have a floating shoulder shoulder blade. I think I covered it with border collies once.
