of the fleabag situation is brought to you by a new sponsor.

spk_1:   0:04
Hillary's Cafe Alley. Do you ever

spk_0:   0:07
need, like, a quiet place to get some work done?

spk_1:   0:10
Yeah. I mean, I tried coffee shops, but they're always so busy and loud. Oh,

spk_0:   0:14
then you're gonna love Hillary's Cafe. They've got plenty of seating, convenient electrical outlets and almost no other customers for hours on end.

spk_1:   0:22
Wait. I thought you had to be a guinea pig to go there. No, no,

spk_0:   0:25
no. It's a guinea pig themed cafe. It's not a cafe for guinea pigs.

spk_1:   0:29
Well, then the guy who gave me my bank loan got it all wrong. Do they do hot organic e foods like risotto? Of course. Also, I like normal bread. Nothing

spk_0:   0:41
fancy. Like Ry, This is your place. I

spk_1:   0:44
did read on Yelp that the prices are outrageously expensive and they don't give change. London Good point. So pop on in today

spk_0:   0:52
to Hillary's cafe for a limited time. The next man to walk through the door will be ridden to death. Some restrictions do apply.

spk_1:   1:00
We have a cupcake situation. I will be there too. Okay, we're back. Episode two of the fleet back situation with you. I'm Kristie More Ali Lim Cho Torren.

spk_0:   1:21
And we want to first give a big thank you to everyone who has already subscribed or followed us so far. And we are so pumped up that everybody is listening and enjoying it because we're having a great time. Diane, this is really

spk_1:   1:35
fun. Yeah, like we'd be

spk_0:   1:37
doing it if it were just the two of us anyway. So we're super excited that you all are glad that we're here to um So we want to thank you all for your wonderful comments. Your feedback on the Facebook group on instagram. We have some listener comments were actually to sharing a little bit. And it's been fun, uh, seeing we have ratings and a review on Absolutely Yeah, exactly. So we're on Apple and Spotify now. I think eventually Google play will pick it up. They apparently crawl on. You have to wait till they find you Google. So the Hulk there? I mean, we love Google. Our overlords, I, for one welcome. Our Google ruling does just as a reminder for everyone. We're doing these for people who have seen the entire show. So if you are have just started watching, and for some reason found us. You're gonna get spoiled real quick.

spk_1:   2:30
Spoilers. Spoiler alert. So, Taylor, a loose. We suggest

spk_0:   2:34
you go ahead and finish of the show before you listen. And then watch the 12 more times like the rest of us. Uh, on our level. Yeah. Descend into the That is our fleet fleabag fandom.

spk_1:   2:50
I think it's so cute

spk_0:   2:51
when people are like,

spk_1:   2:52
Oh, I watched it. I liked it like we did. You really want to wait a minute? And I know it was great. I really enjoyed it. So now I'm gonna

spk_0:   3:00
watch in Deadpool or whatever you're like. Wait, What you talking about?

spk_1:   3:05
No, but this is all there is. Yeah. Oh, have you watched dead to me? It's great. No, it's

spk_0:   3:09
not because it's not fleabag. Uh, yeah. I don't know when I'm gonna actually watch something new. It might be jarring. So let's rock witless. I wanted to kind of talk about what's happening this week and flea bag last night were the British geek You Men of the Year Awards, and Phoebe presented the Standout Performance award to enter Scott my Inter Scott socials. were blowing up last night. Uh, OK, all your socials, all my search fills my entire my poor husband. His acceptance speech was so sweet, and you can find it on YouTube or on any of the groups. And he talked about how Phoebe is known as a great feminist. But she's also really a great humanist. And she wrote a male character with quote, protectiveness and complexity and sensitivity and how fleabag is about people who come into your life for a short time and and have an effect on it. And he hopes his friendship with Phoebe last a long time because he loves her so much. It was so adorable and obviously so true. And her intro to him was great, too, about like that. He's just like in addition to such an amazing actor, he's like the kind ist most like electric charming man. You could know I love them. I mean, it's just not Mom and Dad. Yeah, uh, the other highlight was that, uh So there's a news program account called Jim Moriarty is typing if anybody follows them. And I guess they were there and they got this little video of him dancing on the carpet with and then spent. While there's two, there's why don't I think it's a sister who came to show it and also mentioned in his speech. But

spk_1:   4:40
he did this little dance and the whole rest of night

spk_0:   4:43
this account just kept like, looping it. Two different songs on they were even like this took up too much time. But it's totally worth it. Um, and then no. And then the G Q awards. You know, all these award shows do some kind of weird camera move, you know, used to be like the Mani cam was nothing that you would do that now feminism, so feminism. So we don't do the mani cam. And then then they did like these 360 shots, you know, like the 360 circle or whatever. So the version that was some kind of weird, like vertical flip where it was like the cameras work around them. That and I guess apparently Andrew Scott and Sam Smith were next to each other and did a little day up Dip Dream. William Sam Smith dipped Andrew Scott and um Total smoke show, and I apparently am shipping Andrew Scott and Samson when they're in love. So we were kind of all curious what's gonna happen there? Uh, so that was last night. Generated a ton of awesome content. The fleet back stage show is continue in London, and he even mentioned like it was so generous that she had just done the show and then came over to do this award. Um, and they had press night a few nights ago and a bunch of the cast were there, like, andr. Scott, you Skinner, Jamie Dimitrios, Sean Clifford. Which A side note. I've been following Jamie Dimitriou on Twitter and he has his own show on again over there called Staff. Let's flats. And the clips looked really funny. I kind of wish we could get it here. And I found out this little tidbit that I watched the show called What we do in the shadows. Have you watched it? I have seen clips I love. It was one of my favorite shows last year. And his sister is nausea. The female vampire there Tozzi Dimitrios. So talented family. Very talented family because I saw a clip of like she looks awfully familiar. How are her teeth?

spk_1:   6:30
A little pointy. Yeah, they only take

spk_0:   6:34
roles where their teeth have to be. Oh, the niche niche. Uh,

spk_1:   6:39
well And so speaking of

spk_0:   6:40
the, you know, the show now that she's wrapping up in London, which is basically the original stage show, um, we could talk a little bit about how a lot of us know, but just kind of get it on the record

spk_1:   6:51
way. Sorry. Cast

spk_0:   6:52
of record flea bag business of just how the show originated,

spk_1:   6:57
right? We saw it. We sort of forgot to do that less. Uh, so did just buy it. No. You know what? Pencils have erasers because mistakes. Yeah, I think I actually love how the show got started It like she kind of fell into it. And also, it shows like when you just try something who knows what will happen? Because basically she, like, wasn't working out of drama school for, like, a couple of years. And then she met Vicky Jones. There's a story behind that, but whatever. And, um, and they started this theater company called Dry right. And then they would have, like, different writer friends and playwright friends meet up once a month, and then they give them prompts of like, make the audience feel like this, make the audience feel like this. And then they would write, like, 10 minutes, 10 minutes shows. And so one time, uh, Phoebe did it and it turned into leaving on. And actually, I read or watched or

spk_0:   7:53
hurt or some, you know, I was mostly

spk_1:   7:55
they absorbed the information that she, um she did not know that Vicki Jones had submitted it. Thio Edinburgh. She like she, like, did the 10 minute thing. And Vicky was like, Okay, this is going to Edinburgh And then it did and then a BBC. Exactly. He said he in the 1st 5 minutes of the play he was like, This will work on television like that's the dream that so l a dream When I even

spk_0:   8:23
read in the special edition of the play script that they were even kind of still finishing it on the way to Edinburgh Interest saying, Well,

spk_1:   8:32
she likes to write last minute and we have learned, Yeah, I also enjoyed that. She, um she said she wrote, Flee back in three weeks, and then the only way she edited it is by performing it for Vicky Jones. She said if she left, it was in. If she gasped, it was in. If he said, We can't do that, it was in. But the moment her face started scrunching up, it was like it was out and I love that. And she said she wrote it for Vicky Jones and I just love their love, their friendship. So what? I also think like you said,

spk_0:   9:02
the fact that she just did it and just start. It also is such a great reminder for anybody who wants to be a writer that you don't start with perfection and there's a whole thing. Let's go back to burn a brown. There's a whole thing about this shit. First draft.

spk_1:   9:16
Yeah, like you have to be willing

spk_0:   9:17
to write the shitty first draft and that so many writers and I'm guilty of this to you get stuck because you just keep rewriting that same line because everything has to be perfect before you. And it's like, No, just write something and get it done, and then you can keep refining and refining and

spk_1:   9:30
you get to make a second draft. Yeah, and it reminds me

spk_0:   9:33
of, um, don't know if we've talked about this. There's an IRA glass. Uh, it was like, I guess, just an audio essay or something he did on the NPR about people who are going into a creative endeavor for the first time. And he said, The thing is, is when you start that you have really good taste. Probably if you're gonna be an artist. So you look at people you admire, and then you hold yourself to that standard. And so you do something and you go, well, you because you have good taste ago. This isn't good. Therefore, I'm not good at this, so I'm just gonna stop When he said Really, the people that you are admiring. Where were you? In the same position. Forget them. You forget they worked to get to it. Yeah, I remember that. Yeah, and you have to just keep doing it and doing it. And so it's so easy to watch like Season Two, a flea bag, and go or just the whole show and go. Oh, my God. I'm never gonna write anything as good as that. It's like, Well, she didn't either. When she started, she wrote 10 minutes and then it grew and then also even Would you hear anything about the production of the show? The actors had a role in what happened. The editor had a role in what happened to

spk_1:   10:38
the scene with Martin on the car in the car on the way there,

spk_0:   10:43
you know, or Inter Scott telling her like this ending. So you give it just reminds you of, like, don't start expecting perfection and all talent also comes with a lot of hard work

spk_1:   10:55
and also make your own opportunities. Yeah, and I've loved that. Yeah, I love that. She just decided, like and and not she didn't just make her own opportunity. Like, used the community around her, right? Love that. Yeah. And there she talks a

spk_0:   11:09
little bit on that. How to fail. Podcast about the criticism that it's just for posh girls. Did you see that? And And I thought it was great that she acknowledged she came from a position of privilege where her middle class she did get to go to drama school, and you kind of started on maybe a higher foot than most people would. But at the end of the day, she said I still wrote fleabag like I still sat down and wrote this. So I think it is an important message that ideally, in a perfect world, there'd be a level playing field for everybody who sits down to write something but that nothing is gonna happen if you don't write it. Yeah, if you don't just do it. Yeah, absolutely.

spk_1:   11:46
Yeah. Thank you for coming to our Ted talk. So let's see the Yeah. Speaking of

spk_0:   11:55
that place where people are posting just the best pictures with Phoebe, she is just obviously a queen, and we love her. And we would love to see your pictures. I think a lot of them are going on the Facebook group, but let us live vicariously through, please. Um And also, if you have been there and have met her and want to just tell that story, we would love it if you went on the website at fleabag podcast dot com and you can leave us a voicemail and I want to clarify this is totally free. No matter where you are, it's not like an international call or anything. You just do it straight from your computer or your phone. It just records through that microphones. You're not actually making a phone call. It's all through a website. Um, and we might

spk_1:   12:32
play it on the show because we would love. Yeah, because workers were clearly famous, So you don't do it. The famous episode two of the situation. So we would

spk_0:   12:44
we would just love to hear, uh, the other thing. Oh, the other thing. They announces that the BAFTA, the British Academy of Film and Television Awards in Los Angeles said that Phoebe is going to receive the Britannia Ward of for British Artist of the Year, which will be on October 25th Queen. She's just racking it up. The Britannia Award sounds. So it really does like she's a

spk_1:   13:04
ship. She is a ship. Did you not did that not come across? I wouldn't put it past her. I think she's capable of anything. Anything she

spk_0:   13:14
puts her mind to. The other thing that's interesting with those pictures of her outside. She has the same bodyguard that Andrew Scott did. This guy Dan with a neck tattoo whose I should mention exceptionally handsome and, by all accounts, a wonderful human being. If you like connected well, it's just that really sends a message of what he could do to you. If you really want a career choice for him. Yes. Uh, all right, then. I just wanted to mention quickly. This past weekend I went to Dragon Con dressed as Claire with her haircut and the funny story there. Is that I Because I thought,

spk_1:   13:51
Oh, I'll have to do

spk_0:   13:51
is trim a bobbed wig. I'll just get, like, a 19 twenties bob with and trim it. And so I had done that with one. I bought a really cheap wig that was not well made, and the hair just looked really bad. I also cut it pretty badly, but in the process. But I thought, Oh, I need to see it on my head to cut it. And so I made a real rookie mistake of not putting on a wig cap, which resulted in me trimming my actual

spk_1:   14:17
banks. Fortunately, it was just part of them, and it's not. You can't tell super super Nor, you know, just avoided it out to me. I

spk_0:   14:24
would never. And now it's all you see. I take this as my commitment to you sacrificed parts of your body, and it's actually perfect that I really gave myself a bad haircut. I

spk_1:   14:35
should have called you in a panic. It's awful for you to go Saba part Stephanie. So I'm gonna put

spk_0:   14:44
those pictures up. They I think I did have him up on the Facebook group over the weekend, but we'll put those there. And then I also wanted to mention that we can't even begin to list all the celebrities who have talked about how much they love flea bag dek Shepherd has mentioned on his path. Podcast Taylor Swift honestly replied about posting Be on SNL with her. I don't if you saw it when it first came out. Come on, man. John, he was like, Well, weaken like just watch season to flea bag and we're done here Way can wrap this up because this is it. And I'd also like to consider any celebrity who's a fan of the show off a future friend of our show for show who would love to just call in and talk to us about their thoughts on fleabag. So, Dax female, you

spk_1:   15:31
got our e mail. Give us a buzz. Maybe we should get a phone number. We'll let you know my direct line Yeah. Oh, let me let me just give you myself. Why, then I also

spk_0:   15:41
saw a fin wolf hard from stranger things. One of the kids who, of course, he's on there with Brett Gilman. Last week, I guess, just watched it. All he did was tweak the word flea bag and all caps, and it's clear that half his audience, or, like, 80% of his audience or teenagers because, or people who just don't know because they're over just like a thin you. Okay, uh,

spk_1:   15:59
ticks Like what? What do you want me to say here? Yeah. Do you have lice? What are you telling us? So hopefully they'll catch on, but it's big of

spk_0:   16:08
celebrity. I forgot to mention my story from the week after I got back from London. We have tickets to go see Nikki Glaser, a comedian on in Atlanta, And I had I follow her on Instagram, and I had noticed that she's a fleabag fan and in fact, she had posted this really funny. It was just a screenshot of like a flash flood warning for New York, and she was like, Sorry, guys, I've been watching season to believe action

spk_1:   16:35
and I have no idea

spk_0:   16:36
what she's talking about. I don't get that joke. I took it off, and so I saw that they were doing a meet and greet for 20 bucks, which is kind of funny, because the last time we saw her, she was just standing at the door and you could get a picture with her. And now I think she was like, Wait, I can charge money for that. So we're, like, 100% 20 bucks. So on the way out, I actually she was wearing kind of this black jumpsuit kind of thing, and I was like, Oh, I'm gonna mention fleabag. And so I said, You look amazing and like, this is very flea bag. And she was like, Oh, I got my lovely back so much And I'm like, Well, I actually just starting out you I said, I'm starting a podcast about it. I didn't push it like

spk_1:   17:14
you should be on it. And then

spk_0:   17:17
I had mentioned her. Mike actually went to London

spk_1:   17:20
last week. He consigned her scotches

spk_0:   17:21
like, Oh my God, he's so hot! Let me see. And so I showed her the picture. She's like zooming in on his face. And then I So I said, Yeah, you know, he, like, grabbed the phone and did this. Selfish goes,

spk_1:   17:31
Oh, we should recreate that. So we did you, like, hold up the

spk_0:   17:34
phone? And I was like, let me stand really far away from you for some reason, because that's what I did with him. So that was really fun.

spk_1:   17:39
And now you're best friends with Nick, please. And you'll be on the show. Future front of the

spk_0:   17:43
show. Naked future friend of the show, Nikki Glaser. Uh, she is very funny. If anybody doesn't want her, she has her own podcast called you up. That is like a collection of She's a serious radio morning show called you up. And they they compile all the best parts for her Bach podcast. So good. All right, so now we're gonna break the fourth wall and hear directly from you guys. We got on. Like I said, we got our first review on a podcast, which was so great that made our day

spk_1:   18:09
telling us how great we are. Guys, we need the love. Uh, you know how fleabag needs sex. We need a positive reinforcement from the public from straight from stranger. Yes. We also got an email

spk_0:   18:23
from Dina, who I have seen on the Facebook group a lot. Um, and she had a great trivia tidbit about episode one. When fleabag after women speak, When Claire offers asked about for a drink and she says no and then flew back to the very next. Ranger says, You wanna go for a drink? That woman is Vicky Jones. Yeah, I hadn't even

spk_1:   18:40
I wonder how many times

spk_0:   18:41
I had to do that and keep a straight face, maybe, uh, for you, like

spk_1:   18:45
no. Uh, And then Dana was also

spk_0:   18:48
saying her interpretation the end of seat of episode one with the drunk girl at the bus stop that she didn't think it was come on, that it was just her wanting to find a safe place for her, like for the night. And that she was so drunk. Yeah. Would she be any good to her? And she kind of knew that. But

spk_1:   19:03
it's a thought. Ali Ali is going to interpretation. Brilliant show. She doesn't know how to have a human interaction without trying to get that I could Yeah. So we want to

spk_0:   19:13
hear everybody else's theories to again. Our email is the fleet back situation at gmail dot com. Web sites fleabag podcast dot com Instagram at Fleabag Situation podcast and Twitter is at fleabag podcast. And thanks to you know, yeah, writing us, that was on then. Allie wanted to follow up on something from last.

spk_1:   19:36
Oh, yes, it's the last episode. I've got some comments on this. I wanted to clarify my mention about my friends podcast about Harry Potter erotica. It does exist. Yeah, it is phenomenal. It's it's It's hilarious. Um, it is, however, not can not only about Harry Potter erotica used to be. Then they got, um, they needed to change it. So now it's called Fan Gaz. Um, it's about all fan fiction, and I highly recommend checking it out. If you want a funny, sexy laugh on your way into work, it's actually not that sexy because they make fun of them so much it later it hurts. Should we be concerned

spk_0:   20:12
about the fact that Harry Potter's mostly about

spk_1:   20:14
Children? Oh, no, they're very They're very into consent. Look very into every every story that you read. Okay, Sure, they read they're over 18 Okay. Uh, this is, like, the right way Post host Saddle of Hogwarts. Okay, this is epilogue. Yeah, they're like teachers, and Okay, good, good, good. Don't worry. I think we needed to clear. No, you're right. I'm glad you did. It. Kind of hit me

spk_0:   20:36
later. I was like, Wait a minute, Children.

spk_1:   20:40
Uh, hey, just the hippo. Griff, Get involved. You know what I have? They haven't read one with a hypocrite, but I feel like they will now. Holy Alright. Well, on that note, I

spk_0:   20:53
think we have a need to take a quick break. And then when we come back, we are going to dive right into Season one episode to a flea bag. Be right back on the flight back situation. Okay, we're back on the back situation, and we're getting ready to break down. Seen by seeing Episode Season one Episode two which, of course, is just called Episode two Written by Phoebe Waller Bridge and directed by Harry Brad Beer and we open on the tube.

spk_1:   21:26
Oh, this is one

spk_0:   21:27
other thing. Um, maybe I could meet you. I just saw an interview with Phoebe about season one because we open in this scene there on the two in the original play bus run was actually two broken. Yes. And she was talking about how the way the production happened is that BBC funded the pilot. And she was basically gave us £100 to shoot this pilot. They had no money. Oh, my God. And that after the pilot is when Amazon they basically went to Amazon and said, Could we co produce this and get more money, give us more money. So my guess is for the first episode, it would've been way too expensive to actually shoot on the to do and get the AWOL Nation song and get the song and all that stuff. But even just for bus rodent to be to broaden, I think probably was to expect That's my guess. And they brought it up onto the bus. But anyway, so yes, So we start on the tube here, where you see the song is a Wallace say, all by

spk_1:   22:20
mail by a what? Stable nation. Thank you. Amazon X rays. Yeah. I thought this scene was incredible. Yeah, it

spk_0:   22:27
just struck me as soon as I saw it. Like, it kind of just felt unique.

spk_1:   22:32
Well, I was like, Oh, this is art. Okay? Yeah, cool. Like it upped it. And then But then they make fun of it at the end a little bit. Yeah, but it's kind of funny, too,

spk_0:   22:43
that she's like seeing these people have these reactions and that it's me. It was, I don't know. It was meant to be a kind of a metaphor for just, like everybody in, like, these mundane lives internally having some kind of struggled exactly that we don't see and everybody's got their shit. Yeah, and I think we've all been, like, on a train or something. You're kind just looking all these people. And you're like, What? What's going through our You're just sitting there like thinking about you all that time to think. You know, I think it's interesting, too. This is one of the few times there's an actual pop song incorporated. Oh, yeah, instead of just original composition, right. But I agree. It really got the, uh it was one of those moments for me where I was kind of hooked a little more on the show.

spk_1:   23:21
Yeah, and I was like, Oh, this is gonna be a higher level right? But then I thought,

spk_0:   23:27
Yeah, and then hurt, You know, like it's the button on the end is I think my period's coming, which

spk_1:   23:32
I sometimes

spk_0:   23:33
have mixed feelings about period jokes on things that are female driven because it feels a little cliche of Lego. We're gonna talk about your period, but at

spk_1:   23:42
the same time, if

spk_0:   23:43
you're gonna portray a woman's life, it's a monthly part of a woman's life. And, uh, it is just kind of a funny button to the end of that

spk_1:   23:49
I got I had, like, a flash toe

spk_0:   23:51
30 rock when they're trying to prove that women are funny and then

spk_1:   23:54
all the scenes are like my period like Amelia Earhart and been the plane. Oh, no, my period like you get a girl. Yeah, but no, I agree. I'm always I'm sort of like, Did you have to make a period joke? But I actually really liked it, cause I I I thought she was doing something like kind of serious and interesting, and it had, like, this deeper meaning. And then she's like, Fuck e. I think

spk_0:   24:21
women go through that experience to were like everything does seem a little off when you get your period. And, of course, that connects later. When she runs into arsehole guy at the store and chief is buying happened. She actually does have her period. She was right. It is coming. So now we are at Claire's house and Claire, I'm sorry. Fleabag has knocked on the door, and I think it's like you said, it's funny that

spk_1:   24:43
her first reaction is okay like this not Hi, how are you not, you know, just literally like this is something I haven't seen before. And I think it is

spk_0:   24:55
a little bit too, like atropine shows where people just show up people's doors, which is something that happens in real life. And later Claire even is like, Why didn't you text? And then we get her saying Nice hair cut My God, Yes and Claire saying It's better, which just that with you see that Claire has always head. There's something about her hair.

spk_1:   25:16
I also love the shut theme and that she can't

spk_0:   25:18
just accept the compliment. Oh my God, I know she's always like striving for perfection, so it's like it's better. It's better. It's not best. It's not where exactly where I needed to be right, but it's better. So then, she says, I need to speak to Martin, which I guess is why she didn't text because she kind of knew Claire would. What's up? What's up with that? That's kind of weird. So now we transition into her talking to Martin, Who is Brett Gelman? And one thing I think is interesting is that Martin apparently was supposed to be Scottish or was in the play. And Amazon wanted American character

spk_1:   25:54
like they can't waken d'oh! Anything that's not a little bit about us, which might be true. They know us. So they own us better, Bill a reason they're listening to us. So the only reason are

spk_0:   26:08
related to the show is because it had an American character in it. Thank God he's the worst. No.

spk_1:   26:14
So I do want to talk about

spk_0:   26:15
Brett Gelman cause I actually love Brett Gilman. He is on stranger things, which I haven't watched. Season three. No, I haven't either. And they both have so much stuff. Vocal Miracle. They call it like the summer of Brett Gelman season. Likely having a moment. He is having a bit of a moment I actually saw him first, like years ago on an adult swim show called Eagle Heart. That was Chris Elliott. Who's Oh, yeah, my favorite. It was like a Walker, Texas Ranger satire. And Breck Coleman is just one of those guys who has shown up on a ton of comedy.

spk_1:   26:46
Yeah, I remember saying I think he was on at midnight when that was Yeah. Also, side note about Chris Elliott that we can cut later. He lived in my town in Connecticut when I grew up, and his daughter played on myself. Balto. Amy. So no, Abby, I don't know Abby Elliott. She's on us. An elephant. Oh, that's Abby Elliott. Yeah, Yeah, I knew that. And I forgot. But anyway, basically, what I'm saying is I'm also best friends with her. Okay, way were very bad enough altogether and

spk_0:   27:10
by extension, great friends with absolutely. Which

spk_1:   27:13
I really liked Snow Day, the Nickelodeon movie he was because that was my age, Sara. I

spk_0:   27:20
remember him back on letter bitten

spk_1:   27:22
no, anyway. And it's kind of funny

spk_0:   27:25
because that he's on it's connected to bread, Gilman, because he always plays kind of this like high status idiot on little creepy dude, a little bit creepy, but I thought it was funny. The interview aside with, uh, with Phoebe, she was saying that Amazon had said, Oh, we think there should be an American character And actually, when they were talking about Martin and she said, You know, he's just kind of like sleazy do she cut like, alcoholic guy in there like

spk_1:   27:47
we know exactly a dream, That's who. That's what you want. Yeah, there we have exactly the right

spk_0:   27:52
actor in lines bred Gentleman, and she said they were even like, Oh my God, like we have the star coming because he was the name Well and the guy in the interview was even like of Brett Kelvin's like your huge

spk_1:   28:04
star who's arriving, I think Brett Gelman, you wouldn't see himself that way.

spk_0:   28:07
And she's like, Well, no, he was like the American coming God damn, it's America. Uh, earning it well and he's He's clearly a fabulous actor to cause I also have been following him on Instagram. He is obviously, like the nicest guy half of his poster about his dog, Janet, and that's a good name for a little Janet. And, um, yeah, It's just very cute. So, uh, so highly recommend following him? Because he's just kind of silly and funny. But anyway, so here he is, Martin, Um, the creepy starting, Yeah, turning it on right away. And

spk_1:   28:40
I think it's funny when he goes my wife in my study, I almost wonder if he's like talking to somebody. And

spk_0:   28:47
he's like, explaining why he has to go all the way. He looks at the computer, and he's like

spk_1:   28:52
my wife in my study. He's so performative anyway. Like, I think he's just maybe, like Lady my wife. I also is like, Of

spk_0:   29:01
course you have a fucking study. Martin, what do you So what you working on, Josh? For the opposite of posh? Well, and it is also, like, almost passive aggressive, like

spk_1:   29:10
you're not supposed to be in here. Actually, let me announce that

spk_0:   29:13
to you. And then fleabag turns the cameras, his gang bangs Asian. I'd put a tenner on it

spk_1:   29:19
first, but not last mention of gang bangs in this show, like there are several yeah themes. Am I right?

spk_0:   29:28
Oh, you know, getting things about multiples, whatever that relevant good video. It does. Yeah. In the season to what your dad's like this very special Gang Bay,

spk_1:   29:47
and you can't have struggled to find anywhere to that

spk_0:   29:49
Somebody gets. That's what it comes up with.

spk_1:   29:51
What I think. It's funny,

spk_0:   29:52
though, with her commenting about his porn habit is we find out later that she's fleabag, has got a pretty healthy porn habit of her own and that over the course of the show, I think we kind of see that she's so disgusted by Martin. But actually, she and Martin are very similar in a lot of ways. And the interview every with Breck ailment. He said that that they talked about that, that the two characters who probably most alike are Martin and Flea Bag because they've both been kind of like alienated from the family. They're kind of like the black sheep that nobody really like to get embarrassed. They let you get a rise out of people, and you know, she said, he makes all these sexually inappropriate jokes, and she does that to totally so it's kind of funny that they kind of are the similar, but actually read this interview with her in the new Statesman. Um, that sounds very it's British. I think I go there all like everybody Listening is like I don't know anything.

spk_1:   30:46
Um, but goddamn Americans, she said. You know, when someone says something

spk_0:   30:51
overtly sexual to you and you don't necessarily know them very well,

spk_1:   30:54
they immediately control the energy in that conversation because you're like, Whoa, okay, it's a real statement of existence in that social situation or in that conversation. So I I have real. It's like an act of control and then power and I When I read that, I was like, Oh, boom like that But that because that's the only power she feels she have. Right? And so and clearly him, too. He lives, has nothing, and he knows his wife doesn't love him. Is his kid's weird family like, you know, And so I that really, like resonate with me cause and I just love seeing, sort of like

spk_0:   31:26
behind the seat, like what was going on in her head when she, like, created these characters like that. Little like that little quote. Yeah, and the fact that he has a stepson implies he was married before. Yes, yes, Martin's got some kind of history a little bit of game. Yeah, right. So then he looks at his laptop, goes

spk_1:   31:41
finished, which could be sexual guys and then yelled that before you have to edit that down. This was interesting

spk_0:   31:50
where he looks and goes. Hello, you

spk_1:   31:53
Yeah, and I had never really caught

spk_0:   31:55
that. Like he said, it's a chance for us to hear her name and we don't get

spk_1:   31:58
out. It's like the only, like, blatant when I feel like Reach somebody and actively does not say that. But see, I didn't even catch

spk_0:   32:05
that when I watched it. And it also, though implies, like familiarity between them and even know, like a little bit more intimacy, maybe than they actually have. And then he goes, Well, it must be my lucky day because you said she only talks to

spk_1:   32:18
people she fancies. This was like, Ah, I mean, that's the first dig for Martin. We have a dig for Martin. It is true, but like I don't want to

spk_0:   32:31
give it to him so that she doesn't talk to people. She fans. Yeah, well, she's kind of having to. It's also interesting, actually, that Claire has said that to him. I know. It's like, Oh, clear shared something with you Or that she talks about flea bag behind her back in that way and

spk_1:   32:48
yet lets us know that they

spk_0:   32:49
might be talking about other stuff. Right? And it also is funny that the follow up to she talks to people she fancies is Can you leave us alone? Yeah, right. But we find out it's and then just come up with a reason why and she know, commits Martin to planning clear surprise birthday party,

spk_1:   33:07
which he takes like a pro. Yeah, no flinching at all. Well, and I thought

spk_0:   33:11
that was kind of funny. That also implies a little bit of a playfulness between the two of them. Like he just goes along with it. And then I also find this when Claire finally does leave, and he looks and Martin does kind of have a week to organize that now that there is this interesting, like filter. Now that comes off that Claire has left the room. Like, now we're actually just gonna talk to each other like normal people putting on any prayers or passive aggressive weirdness. Yeah, there's a little passive aggressive. Okay, that's always present. They clearly I have a weird back and forth. So he comments on her top

spk_1:   33:45
when she when he says Nice top First of all you. And second of all, I was like, Oh, is he saying that Because Claire told him that that fleabag stole her top? Or is he just being a skeevy or well, it's a little bit of both. Column a column B

spk_0:   34:01
one. Then when she hands her, she ends into statue. And, uh, he goes, What a pair of Argos Fuck May know, which again is a little like on the head he wanted. And then what a

spk_1:   34:12
pair I do. I like that. Like when she has just like the reaction to his name and his presence at all times. Yeah, like we would obviously react that way because, like, look at him. But she liked trains us to have that reaction, right? I feel like right because it's consistent, even though

spk_0:   34:31
it's again a little bit of disgusted herself. Meeting

spk_1:   34:34
Yes, The other thing. I

spk_0:   34:35
just realized at the end when fleabag first sees the statue, doesn't she comment about

spk_1:   34:40
Yeah, it's yeah. So it's funny. That's true.

spk_0:   34:43
Yeah, like, but it's actually hair alone. Her exact reaction. Yeah, so we learned he's an art dealer of some kindling way fancy for him. Yeah, what's up with

spk_1:   34:53
that? It does make sense that Claire would like

spk_0:   34:56
be with an art dealer, cause she would probably like, believe that that is an appropriate, acceptable career. Yeah, it could explain how they met and like, maybe he's just kind of been letting himself go over the course of years and or Claire's obviously a lot to deal with. He might have thought like he was gaining some worth by being married to someone like her because she's, you know, hire her class or whatever. I mean, we don't know a lot about his history. So he asked her where she got the statue

spk_1:   35:24
thing. I think she has. No, she didn't think about this in advance, right? She wasn't like, Oh, let me concoct some story. She stole it from a market. Yeah, the fact that he doesn't

spk_0:   35:39
react to like to me is that he's kind of the worst, too. So he's fine with it being still, he doesn't care. He has no principles at all that he wouldn't just go ahead and take that. No, especially if there's something in it for me, for him and just a market artist like he, he knows that was full of shit, which again, this constant thing of like there's something it's true that we're just not going to know my guy going. Yes, So he agrees to sell the statue and says he'll take 10% if it sells. So now it's funny where he she says, Don't tell Claire and now he kind of knows something's intriguing about this. She goes, Don't tell clarity does or what You got nothing on me, princess.

spk_1:   36:17
And she tries.

spk_0:   36:18
Yeah, it's almost like Clear knows I'm a piece of shit. You don't have to. There's nothing you can shock her with.

spk_1:   36:26
And I got shit on you, right?

spk_0:   36:28
Exactly. She comes back with or I'll tell her you're watching Gang Bangs and he goes, Please don't do that again, which I love. Remind is similar. The bank manager with like that will get you very far here any more like it's a great writer trick of like you're now letting the viewer picture that scene themselves of what happened previously, and it just adds kind of a depth to the job and just it's just funnier. Yeah, because I wasn't by the way. But she still has the power that she's got something there. So now she goes over after he leaves and looks at his computer. It opens it up, and we just see her go, Uh, and you think she has seen some kind of shocking porn? Turns out it's actually this, like vanity necklace that he was looking out for her like, personalized Claire necklace, which is like, No, well, it's funny when she looks up and goes disappointed. Yeah, like she's partially disappointed that she didn't get to see some porn yet. And also that it's just a terrible gift

spk_1:   37:22
and that she can't, like, get him right? Yeah,

spk_0:   37:25
exactly. She doesn't have that over him anymore. Like crap. He was right. Maybe wasn't actually doing exactly so.

spk_1:   37:31
Now she's trying to leave, and she's just My favorite thing about this is she's just holding the

spk_0:   37:36
toilet paper out in the open and just cash, not even under her coat, not even trying to sneak it out.

spk_1:   37:41
You could put it in her purse. Yeah, and just has.

spk_0:   37:43
And I love the line when she's like really doing? Oh, I brought it with you. Where did you get that? Oh, I brought it with

spk_1:   37:49
as you do. Like she just showed. I like to fly, so you never know when you're gonna need it. Uh, I thought that was interesting because Claire won't even give her the toilet paper later. She Claire wants to help but flea bags, not asking for help. So she doesn't get any help. Yeah, like she won't even give her the frickin toilet paper. And there is a little

spk_0:   38:10
bit of, like, are you so not a grown up that you are honestly stealing toilet paper from me right in front of me?

spk_1:   38:16
Yeah. And I think there is

spk_0:   38:17
that sisterly thing of, you know. Come on. You need toe. Learn this lesson yourself. So, yeah, I'm not gonna give you toilet paper and then about looks at us tight. Yeah. Can you believe it? Then Claire asks about Harry. Fleabag told Claire that shed hair engaged, they're not which they're not. And then it's kind of interesting that Claire is kind of like what? Shocked but not happy. Fantastic, super slow in tune again. And I

spk_1:   38:48
think it's probably

spk_0:   38:48
because Maybe Claire thinks, like knows that fleabag is not really into Harry. And it's kind of like Harry would be making a

spk_1:   38:56
huge Yeah, I like I like more concerted. She's working certain about Harry. I think this is it. This wouldn't be good for you. You just true. And her comment

spk_0:   39:06
about Oh, he really used to make you laugh. That was It was kind of revealing when we find out more later about her relationship with Martin, and that's like the only value shoot places on a relationship is if they could make her laugh. Yeah, and it It almost seems like she's kind of projecting some of her own doubts about Mark her relationship with Martin on to Harry and Flee, but for sure. Maybe that's even why she keeps asking about it, because she's kind of concerned about her own. But it's like like

spk_1:   39:32
here's another one. That's, um, I can

spk_0:   39:33
focus on this mess exactly and act like everything's fine with me. Right? Then we get a little more about Harry, and with this flash, Paco flee back, saying, like

spk_1:   39:42
Harry used

spk_0:   39:43
to say things like, You're not like other girls. You can keep up

spk_1:   39:48
fringe. Every woman that watched that externally or internally. Yeah, uh, and then he slurps out of the straw like a child. Just cherry on top. She's so good at that. That sound effect is perfect. Well, I actually just sound in that scene

spk_0:   40:06
because on top of the slurp, the like, I think there's like a little extra sound effect on him, tapping his head like it sounds like he's tapping water

spk_1:   40:14
make. It makes it really seem hollow, hollow or dent. Tigger y like It's not good. Neither one is good. It's just that subtle little beat. And then I had never caught

spk_0:   40:24
this until I watched this, like the second time, second or third time where she goes. I liked his songs.

spk_1:   40:30
Yeah, we never actually got to see Harry Song. I thought we were gonna get a Harry song. I bet they would be hilarious, like that's I. That was a mist up. I mean, I'm sure they just it might have just

spk_0:   40:42
been where do anything we imagine it's funnier than what they could have acted like, but I would just love to hear somebody who is clearly not that deep. What? You know, we kind of got that from what? He was his journals. Yeah. So now we get back, Fleabag gets back home to see that Harry has cleaned out the apartment. And I think, you know, she says he really liked was committed. He's so crazy. Just committed to this one and that to me, the fact that he took everything, even the food out of the fridge kind of implies he was paying for everything.

spk_1:   41:14
Like she wasn't concerned. She was kind of just amused. She wasn't like, Oh,

spk_0:   41:17
where's my stuff? Yeah, I don't think any of the stuff is her stuff. I don't think it's her stuff. And like cleaning out the fridge and me like this is a new detail and we get Harry now cleaning it because he cleans everything like it's a crime

spk_1:   41:29
that that was delivered so perfectly like a crime scene that we cut Thio

spk_0:   41:35
Harry scrubbing the floor, sobbing Sze which again feels a little like Harry embracing a feminine stereotypes. Although I guess because I am a woman, I can relate to this hard of when something goes wrong. Or like I'm feeling anxiety or like depressed about something, huh? Man, My closets. Never been cleaner.

spk_1:   41:59
Like I have power over something. Totally. Yeah, Yeah, this is This is organized. My underwear is folded. Yes,

spk_0:   42:06
I go to the container store and I'm just like, well, take my money. Perfect. If I had these Rio Rio tan baskets or whatever, well, it would be actually this episode brought to you by containers. The fact that he cleans the apartment so much and her saying I've actually considered I've considered timing a break up for when the flat needs a bit of a going over. So

spk_1:   42:28
my question was that like, yes, whatever. It's hilarious, but she says she considered timing a break up, But then we see it happen. So is that did it happen or is that like your thing? But we haven't seen her really imagine anything else. It's true. I thought that was a little interesting because it, like, went off the pattern. Yeah, but I did. I mean, when she like, feels for the dust and she's like and they're having such a nice moment, right? And like, the song is kind of like the same five is the Alabama Shakes song feeling from the last seat right? like it was just so. It looks lovely, but she's again not connected to her life like she's out of her head and a little

spk_0:   43:08
more. It's a little bit of a gag. Yeah, it's a good one worth it. Then she explains how Harry always leaves the little green dinosaur whenever he leaves.

spk_1:   43:17
I loved that.

spk_0:   43:18
Yeah, whole tool. It's great because it ties into that theme of the show of, Like began pretending Something is really but it's not or vice versa, Not acknowledging the thing. That's really so this idea of like, Wink wink my wife Did I leave him there? Oops!

spk_1:   43:33
In the same place? Yeah, yeah. And I also I read this quote in the new Statesman article. The same thing she said, What's so useful about British culture of politeness is the level of passive aggression is really fun to write. And I was like male on the head. Yep, it's and it also it's the fact that it's a toy. Yes, so and Harry is just a child like slurping. Straw has a little talk like who? Who haven't toid itis where well, we know

spk_0:   44:00
a lot of men who

spk_1:   44:01
Okay, that's true. like they were not gonna come right out and maybe make it a thing. Yeah, it's like it's actually kind

spk_0:   44:08
of a different way to show a maturity, because when she's got her own a maturity but is more emotional and he's got his little toys that he needs to stick with Now she's on the toilet thing that she yeah, uh, that Now she's got to think about all the people she could have sex with now, which I kind of like, Do I give fleabag credit that she's 100% faithful to hair when they're together? Unclear. Unclear. But now she could just really go hog wild. You're saying the fact that she's on the toilet is also so

spk_1:   44:37
intimate? Yeah, so private and all, but also what I was like. Oh, this makes like It's funny. Yeah, it's just like a funny scene, but it's also it makes sense. She's sitting on the toilet. You don't have anything to do and wanders. Your mind wanders, and she's just thinking. And when she thinks she's talking to us. So I just was like, you know, this make this. This is hilarious and it also

spk_0:   44:58
makes sense. It's like, kind of realistic. But

spk_1:   45:00
I also thought, just like her talking about

spk_0:   45:02
her experience, her whole relationship with sex while on the toilet can't get more intimate than that. Yeah, and I feel like she's kind of laying out a little more literally in the dot in the monologue about that kind of the themes. We saw it in her date with bus route. Yes, like this is kind of explaining her reaction to him, not wanting to have sex with her. Yeah, this is an important scene. Very yeah, it really speaks to who she is, a za person in this moment. Yeah,

spk_1:   45:33
I also I was looking real deep for meanings when I was watching this. I am all the themes, but I did think it was interesting the coloring of the bathroom because it's totally grain weight and even the towel has flamingoes on it. But like their grain, weight like that could be this funky thing. But it's boring, totally, and she's wearing of white and black top that I love and black underwear and like she's you know, and then you see, like you said, you know, in Season two, it's mostly black and white. And then

spk_0:   46:06
she meets the priest in She's in Red. It's a friend of mine pointed out that she I don't know if it's every single scene she's wearing black and white, but for the most part she is. And then, yeah, look, there's more color and it's like that yellow dress on the

spk_1:   46:17
wedding day, you know, like

spk_0:   46:18
like bright red one. Yeah, yeah, she's kind of started more color. I do. I think you're right that in this scene in particular, it's completely intentional. I mean, obviously, production designer makes every single choice in this set, And it is. I think it's supposed to show just her being totally void of any happiness. And that was another thing that notes for the play, that they said that she just basically hasn't felt anything in a really long time. She's not letting herself not letting herself feel, and so I think that's a great observation. That

spk_1:   46:48
and then when I was staring at her clothes because I literally popped it to be like there's a towel with flamingoes on it hands and enhance. But she she's wearing the same neck. I started to realize she's been. She wears the same necklace, the whole I don't know about season two, but definitely Season one. And it's of a wishbone. And like, what is the symbolism of that? Is that like, because it's like you make a wish that implies

spk_0:   47:13
you have hope for the future in the

spk_1:   47:14
theme of the whole show is like hope. And, um so it's just like an interesting thing they don't like. They don't really address it at all. It just kind

spk_0:   47:21
of underlying Lee underlying Lee said words, Good words there. Yeah, um which I just thought was fun. Yeah, I had never noticed that because I was a very, very small. You didn't enhance enough c s. I fleabag, I mean and then a t end the punch line. The other reason I think this is on the toilets for the joke that the toilet paper has run out. I got called back to why she was trying to steal toilet paper. Yes, and probably another thing that Harry would have taken care of.

spk_1:   47:49
Oh, she's probably never thought about it. Do we want to read her? Say I'm not obsessed with sex? Seem like it's important. So I did this like little quick monologues

spk_0:   48:00
just seems like so important to the whole show. And she goes,

spk_1:   48:04
I'm not obsessed with sex. I just can't stop

spk_0:   48:06
thinking about it. Also, our timing isn't Who's the performance of it, the awkwardness of it, the drama

spk_1:   48:12
of it, the moment you realize someone wants your body and then like dot, dot, dot, not so much the feeling of it. And that is like that scene. You understand why she's been acting the way she's been acting the whole time and like what her world view is and where she's at, just in a few sentences, like it really just

spk_0:   48:31
reveals to you how she feels about herself, which is that she's only a sexual being. And that is where

spk_1:   48:38
value is and same with everybody else. Yeah, you know, it just I you know, and I don't think it was too blatant, like she laid it out

spk_0:   48:45
perfectly. Yeah, appreciated, Yeah, like a statement of purpose, almost of who this character is, how she's coping with this some with something we don't know what it is. Yeah, just. And I think, what again? Because she's brilliant, the so it's kind of hard to watch it through like fresh eyes, as if you're watching it for the first time, which everybody wishes they could do. But to

spk_1:   49:08
me, it's also at this point, you think she's just, ah, lady on the town, a single gal who's, you know, young like crazy antics, sexually healthy lady who's just getting while the getting's

spk_0:   49:19
good kind of thing and not realizing that this is actually numbing. Something really deal. There's layer. And that's why you get that punch at the end that you realize there's more to this. Yes, so now she's got her act together. She's gone. Now she's gonna go open up her cafe and she's kind of pumping herself up. She looks good. She looks really good, she said. I only gave myself. I gave myself 1/2 hour to try to look good, and I ended up looking. You think she's gonna say, like, awful and it's like, amazing, which is a little bit of it to remind a funeral about how you can't help looking amazing,

spk_1:   49:48
but which is such a relief to hear a woman speaks so competently about herself. Like I loved that I was. I was like all for that Yeah, Why? I think there's

spk_0:   49:57
a little bit two of her talking herself up like convinced herself. Everything's great, Yes, and giving us and convince us. And so you know, she's looking amazing. And she's talking about how you know she's on her way to open up her cafe and you just got her sexy little top and and everything's ready. She sees this guy coming at her and starts talking up to of like, yeah, you know, check me out, chub chub, because it's never gonna happen. And she's imagining the scenario again. We're now she's high status over this guy because if she is who she is, every guy's obviously just gonna have sex with her. And she gets to be like, Well, I'm the one telling, you know, like you cower, Yeah, you can't fire me. I fire you so

spk_1:   50:39
kind of worried. I'm gonna make a sex offender out of it. It's like

spk_0:   50:42
like like he's gonna rape her. So there is this very, uh then he walks by and does the walk of shame on Just Pops, that balloon that she's built for herself. And

spk_1:   50:55
I mean, at the same time, there's also

spk_0:   50:56
a little bit of message of, like, slut shaming And like,

spk_1:   50:58
Who the fuck is this guy like? I just want a ST What? Yeah, she doesn't. She look fine? Fine. You don't like a person

spk_0:   51:04
slutty or anything? Not that that's a thing. You know,

spk_1:   51:07
they look like she's, like, had a night out. She doesn't look

spk_0:   51:09
like after she came back from her. You know, she's like, I'm not gonna be sick and like Zach wobbling No shit. But it's like what a dick like, Why, you know,

spk_1:   51:20
why inject so much in that

spk_0:   51:21
moment? Because it's it's a character thing for her of Okay, I've just been shot down from this image I've conjured in my head, but also a commentary on Why does he feel the need to even comment on her at all?

spk_1:   51:34
I make that

spk_0:   51:34
a part of her day. I make that a part of her day to who were who the fucker you to

spk_1:   51:38
even just say anything. Just keep walking. Yeah, No, it just

spk_0:   51:41
scares. Everybody cares. Do you just keep going? So now she's thrown by that interaction and distracted and almost walks into the bike lane and almost gets hit by a cyclist, and it's a great example of again, just like a tonal shift from kind of a light moment to now. This, like jarring cut to a reminder of this, like horrible thing that has happened. That was probably traumatic. Yeah, like that would just jar it. It's jarring because of what almost happened to her and then also it immediate causes this flashback. And again, the sound design is so great how they and this happens again, where any time there's a transition to a flashback of boo, it's that, like what? Shop clerk and room like traffic sound, Um,

spk_1:   52:22
and you're so you feel overwhelmed. You're like, Oh my God, I'm in the road, You feel it

spk_0:   52:26
and you know, it's It's a dramatic sound. And then, you know, I think I think it also kind of speaks to kind of grief. Like I I'm almost surprised that, like Phoebe Walbridge has not lost. I don't know if she has lost someone close to her, but her portrayal of grief is so accurate, and the idea that every time you think of the person you think of the bad thing that happened and I definitely can relate to that, and you do get to a point where you're like, Oh, I could just have a happy memory of this person. But in that moment, when it's still raw, it's like even happy memory is triggered or triggers that you remember. You remember the last thing. They're exactly So I think they did that really well with sound design in the the music. Now she's in the cafe and she's clearly super boned, like having a really having a hard time. She's had these two things now that have kind of knocked her back down where she's just thinking. And so what's her answer? Flirt with a guy, effect sex and drops the cucumber and tries to be flirty. And he's just not even, I mean picking it. Well, it's also not that

spk_1:   53:27
sexy. No, it's oh, dropped my cucumber like you. D'oh! Oh, no, She drop a cute and he's not even looking. Yeah, it's like she thinks

spk_0:   53:38
life is a porn movie like that. And, you know, in real life, someone would go. Oh, you know, I've got a cucumber. Whatever. That's how that would go. Yeah, let me hand you Mike, You Yeah, I have a submission packet for the Harry Potter erotica site.

spk_1:   53:51
Right? They accept submission. So I think it just has to be like

spk_0:   53:56
Harry Potter 100 words. Numbers don't or

spk_1:   54:00
send the cucumber stone. That's terrible. Oh, it's

spk_0:   54:04
I'm sorry, J K. Rolling. Nearly Sorry. I think she'd like it.

spk_1:   54:08
So then when? Then he comes up and ask for a cheese sandwich, and she's like, Oh, you're interested? Yeah. Then disappointed

spk_0:   54:15
that he just wants a cheese sandwich to go right now because we know she's desperate for cash. She says. The prices £12. 55. Which I will say before Brexit tanked the pound temporarily. I think it's bouncing back up now, but, like in U. S dollars just be like a $20 tea sandwich, which Amy probably could find in New York for sure. But this reminded me of when my husband I went to London about five years ago to see the Monty Python reunion show, and at that point, the pound. It was like 1.8 to 1 at $1.8 to £1 so we basically sent the entire trip with my husband, calculating how much everything costs in U. S. Dollars and London is expensive to begin with. So we'd be out for ice cream, maybe. Like this is a $14 ice cream. Doesn't taste like a $14 ice cream

spk_1:   55:05
home. This is a 20

spk_0:   55:07
$4 hamburger. Does it take? And I was like, We need to You need to stop this. Yeah, you can't. You just say sorry. So, yeah, that's funny When she's like London, you know, there's almost

spk_1:   55:18
Christie knows. Yes, true. Christie knows

spk_0:   55:21
what that's like, uh, least five years ago, but

spk_1:   55:23
yeah, it is kind of Yeah, I was there in. That's right. It was crazy. And it's high

spk_0:   55:30
every places and even is a little kind of like Okay. Yeah. Uh, he sees the picture of Boone. Asked, where do I recognize her? Is she famous? And we find out that booze death made the news

spk_1:   55:42
with local cafe girl. Right? And I think this

spk_0:   55:45
comes out in the play a little bit. That it also explains why the cafe is so deserted. That right? Because they now associate it with this tragic story. And they're like, scared. And

spk_1:   55:56
you're not gonna, like,

spk_0:   55:57
confuse a guinea pig cafe for some other

spk_1:   55:59
cafe. So and I think they bring that

spk_0:   56:01
out more in the play that that this was a popular cafe and people even like left tributes and stuff. And so now it's just kind of the sad cafe. And that's why nobody's coming anymore. Yes, and she's not really helping that. Yeah, and so now she again is super depressed. Now. You didn't get what she wanted from this guy and is just sinking further, and that's where she says. The next man who walks through this door is getting written to test and who comes

spk_1:   56:29
in right on cue. Her dad, uh, not ideal. It's not ideal, which again, isn't even like, you know Oh my God, it's just like, Well, that's

spk_0:   56:39
not the best. Yeah, and he's just kind of stuttering about how are you? And I think it's interesting to me that he's, like, dressed up.

spk_1:   56:45
Oh, yeah, this is his outing,

spk_0:   56:46
right? He like this. He's been thinking of practice and has been thinking about this for a while. And she made him come. Yeah, godmother and again, pretending you busy? A bit. No reminds. It just made me think of like when you walk into a restaurant that's empty. They're like, Do you have a reservation? And you're like, Do you have a way to go for a

spk_1:   57:04
headliner? Do you want to pay me to eat here? Uh, so they kind of have this little stall and then I think it's interesting. He kind of

spk_0:   57:14
starts by saying like, I know we didn't really get a chance to, you know, we don't see each other that often or something that you feel like he might be addressing what she was saying to him. Yeah, but then he kind of just blurts out, Did you take the sculpture?

spk_1:   57:28
And that's the Is that the only full sentence? He says in

spk_0:   57:31
the whole this whole first season, he definite Oh, I don't know about that. I haven't I don't know. But he definitely was working himself up to just saying, like pulling off a Band Aid. Yeah, it likes abuse out right? And of course she lies. And he knows she's lying, just like know what? Sculpture? What? Yeah, he just quickly is like, right, right, right. And you said no. And that means I could go.

spk_1:   57:54
Well, that's that hurt. That one hurt because I can't imagine having a parent be like, Oh, good, I don't have to be in your presence anymore. I can go like you gave me what I needed. I can go now. Yeah, that that

spk_0:   58:08
was really hard. I also saw it as imagining the conversation that he has had with Godmother who has ranted at him probably and says, You need to go down there and demand, like, Tell, Ask her And it's almost like he's saying, like I've done my part. I've fulfilled my obligation. I condone

spk_1:   58:29
out, right? I can tell her she said no. And I think it's

spk_0:   58:32
like this moment is over that I have been dreading all day. And

spk_1:   58:37
then he does turn and asks, Are you healthy? Which I again he knows something's off with her like that because he knows she

spk_0:   58:45
stole the statue. And maybe, you know, I mean, it seems like that is kind of like her, but

spk_1:   58:49
But also, you know, her best friend. I like all this stuff, is I don't know. He doesn't know howto act. He doesn't know how to check in with her, right? He can't ask, like how he how she feels he can only ask. Is your physical body healthy? Yeah. And even that

spk_0:   59:02
it's almost like, Well, I asked, Right? Deacon, go. Yes, I've done my part

spk_1:   59:07
And he did. And she mentions, I think, in season two or what I don't remember, but

spk_0:   59:11
he hates to be alone in a room with Yeah, it's in Season two. Yeah, and we see that receipt right now. The yoga girl's coming on to the cafe

spk_1:   59:20
on. This is It's such a short little scene,

spk_0:   59:22
but it's so perfectly and it's a great, great message. Yes. Are you part of again the theme? So the younger girls come into the cafe? Do you have any hot organic e foods? Life

spk_1:   59:35
Course. What would you like? Like risotto? And I thought for a second isn't result of, like, extremely rich and creamy and heavy. Yeah, well, if it's

spk_0:   59:45
organic, tea is organic. Then it's healthy. Yeah, it is kind of funny that she's so like body consciousness.

spk_1:   59:53
Like I would have expected. Like avocado chose. Right now we

spk_0:   59:58
see that she runs out to the store to buy some risotto that she's Yeah, by which we know she's probably gonna steal. It starts looking at tampons, and I love this little moment where she's looking at the regular and then, like, looks at us like, Okay, you caught me and like, gets the heavy,

spk_1:   1:0:14
which I feel like it's like even with periods she's self conscious

spk_0:   1:0:18
about. I'm not gross and I have a huge heavy flow. Very neat regular flow. Keep it tight. Yeah, and then so and then when the arsehole guy shows up and I love her physical comedy of stumbling with boxes and hides the regular ones and then turns the camera Fuck me.

spk_1:   1:0:36
I love that. Like she can't. She feels compelled. Yes, she can't just be like like she feels. She's like, Look, we're normal people in a grocery store, but it won't be up the as she says it like,

spk_0:   1:0:48
it's this amazing accomplishment, like, exact. Are you impressed?

spk_1:   1:0:50
I heard it, right? Yeah, like 100. Look at her value. Yeah, he's obsessed with

spk_0:   1:0:55
her because she let him do that. And so the fact that she was just you know what? You buying just these for my tiny bleeding vagina

spk_1:   1:1:01
again? Like, I don't have

spk_0:   1:1:02
a big gross vagina of a nice, cute little neat vagina. The

spk_1:   1:1:07
first time I saw that, I thought that she was saying it to us because I was like, You're not gonna tell you're not gonna say vagina, like maybe she's I just thought

spk_0:   1:1:16
of this to like she's concerned that she has, like, this, like, massive asshole. So just so you know, my vagina is very tiny, like you're totally right. I'm not growth. Yeah, I know when he goes that he's getting stock cubes and she goes hot

spk_1:   1:1:29
because he goes a hot Yeah, for the tampons. She said, Vagina. That's hot. Yeah, like, Okay, then he's

spk_0:   1:1:36
getting, uh, stock cubes and she goes hot, tow us. Which I think she's kind of making fun of

spk_1:   1:1:40
him. I'll see. I read it as like she truly believed. I know. Maybe I saw it as she's, like hot because she kind of like she does. The face is Yeah, and I Yeah, I don't know. I don't know, go but both ways. But yeah, I felt like she was, like, Great, You're sexy. Everything you do is everything you do

spk_0:   1:2:00
that that's true. I could I can see that. So then he goes, hope it's a light flow

spk_1:   1:2:05
and the fact that she says this to him

spk_0:   1:2:07
specifically Oh, it never is never

spk_1:   1:2:10
right. I thought she was gonna say that. I thought she said that to

spk_0:   1:2:12
us. Actually, when I watched it again, she says the whole thing to him and

spk_1:   1:2:16
my guess. Is he

spk_0:   1:2:17
asking that Because like, it means they can still have sex If it's avoid flow, I don't know.

spk_1:   1:2:21
Maybe he didn't know what to say. Maybe Yeah, like the props to him for I hope it's not too

spk_0:   1:2:27
bad for you on Ben Hur. Reactions like, Nope, I'm just gross Gross never is. And then I like this, reads like you around later tries to play it cool into, uh, she's like, yes fucking yes, yes and yes, just like you know, she's hit the jackpot because she's desperate for sex and attention.

spk_1:   1:2:46
That one I felt when I first watched that I felt

spk_0:   1:2:48
nervous for her because I was like, you were

spk_1:   1:2:50
too enthusiastic. You're gonna accidentally Couto right? Like that. I really was like No girl don't like don't let go of control, but we're not in season Two years ago, I

spk_0:   1:2:58
accidentally says things to the person she made it. His

spk_1:   1:3:01
neck wasn't that great.

spk_0:   1:3:03
I'm sure it's fabulous, actually. So then the one of the yogurt we cut back to the yogurt and she's talking to her friend. She goes, I'm just so happy with my body now, like I don't have to define myself about how I look because I've got just a great fucking body. I can do other stuff now, which

spk_1:   1:3:19
I guess they relate to

spk_0:   1:3:20
what we're talking about last week where, like these women who put their life on hold until they have this ideal body. And then it's also funny that now she's saying, I don't have to think about it anymore because it's perfect. But she's thinking that's clearly what she's thinking about you

spk_1:   1:3:35
all the time. All the time. Yeah,

spk_0:   1:3:37
you ever listen to Jonathan Colton? You know, he's he's this singer that he few years ago he did a thing where he was called a thing a week and you wrote a song every week. But he's got one called Not about You. That's like this guy singing like a breakup song and space, and it's like this song's not about you. It's like I haven't thought of you in 15 days, and I won't think of you today. Okay? The joke is office that he is thinking about her. So I just thought of that when, Which is, like, I don't have to define myself by how they look, which is exactly what I'm doing.

spk_1:   1:4:06
And that she would when he's when she says Michael needs to start trying for a baby and her friends like Oh, okay. Yeah. Then should blow this body on a baby. I think I have to go. You know, I have to leave, so I have to leave him. And she's even kind

spk_0:   1:4:19
of like, um okay, like, even the friends a little. Uh, Leary, What's going

spk_1:   1:4:23
on? I just like, Oh, you're gonna give up love because of this body. Like then what's the body for, right? Like she's giving up like human relationships. Yeah, so

spk_0:   1:4:32
she can maintain. Right. And then you're gonna lose that at some point, right? Like right? How hard you try. It is

spk_1:   1:4:37
something that P w b. Likes to comment. Yes,

spk_0:   1:4:39
exactly. At this point, Hillary has made her way out of the cage and the girls look down and think she's a rat and scream. And that

spk_1:   1:4:47
is not hygienic, which is true. But apparently in the

spk_0:   1:4:53
stage play. This happens while she fleabag is having sex with to broaden her bus. Rodan and e. I don't know, but it's not like a spoiler Spoiler alert. If anybody hasn't read, the player is waiting to see the screening. But apparently she he kicks, he sees it and kicks Hillary against the wall and, like, basically injured her. And like the next day, Hillary's like wheezing fleabag like I feel so bad that she eventually just like mercifully like, breaks her neck.

spk_1:   1:5:22
Oh, it was merciful. I think it was supposed to

spk_0:   1:5:25
be like she's in a lot of pain. Oh, I thought she was just like trying Thio.

spk_1:   1:5:29
I didn't read it that carefully. I

spk_0:   1:5:30
need to really, You know, I think she was. It's like she could feel how much pain she was in. She just, like, put her out of her misery. But shockingly, the BBC didn't think that was really TV

spk_1:   1:5:41
s a letter do, and I guess

spk_0:   1:5:44
she agreed that that was probably a better Yeah, a better call. I also that's when she says, I suppose you should meet Hillary. And did you see when Phoebe was on Seth Meyers? Talk about how they cast,

spk_1:   1:5:56
Yes, the shot. They all these headshots

spk_0:   1:5:59
and this one that they cast. They called the Emma Stone of the Guinea pigs because she had a lot of range

spk_1:   1:6:07
and similar coloring. Yeah, so now we get the flash

spk_0:   1:6:10
back to fleabag giving boo the guinea pig. And I think this is such a great contrast with Claire, where we find out later of like, trying to find Claire the perfect gift in the idea that Martin's tryingto get this ideal gift. Or and so we see that boo and flea bag are such close friends that there's just this instant honesty and acceptance, and I love when she goes to. The important thing is, if you don't like it, we can't take it back. And then she's just like, Okay, Like she's just goes, you know, rolls with the flow

spk_1:   1:6:41
as long as I can wear it or eat it. I'm happy because we could do either. And then which goes, Oh, she's beautiful, love that deliver And then you idiot, it it such a good luck. Just such a lovely line like, full of love. And yeah, her delivery is perfect in so musical. Yeah, you can tell the warmth that

spk_0:   1:7:00
she brought into her life. Oh, yeah. And she knows fleabag has put no thought dice gift

spk_1:   1:7:06
because their friendship doesn't depend on finding the perfect gift. You have to prove you don't have to prove

spk_0:   1:7:12
it. So it's like they we just accept each other as we are. So then she's like, I panicked and like she knows she didn't think about this at all. But she just accepts it and loves it. And

spk_1:   1:7:20
even when she goes, what is this? And she's like something to love. Yeah. So then we

spk_0:   1:7:26
come back to flee back, putting Hillary back on occasions where we get another transition with the music and the traffic sound effect, we start to see some of the guinea pig decor that's up on the wall and fleabag a saying that she doesn't feel anything. My guinea pigs doesn't think they're pointless. And obviously she's just keeping Hillary alive because of boot. Yeah, she's all she has left of her. Don't you know? The ambo took her very seriously, and so now she kind of cares for her the way that she wishes she could've cared for Boo. Yeah, absolutely. Uh, And then I love the cut away to hanging up the picture of the guinea pig with the

spk_1:   1:8:01
little pink bow on its head just the way she delivers that This isn't excellent ones, like so, so good. It's so just that little

spk_0:   1:8:09
paws and so much of like I am serious about.

spk_1:   1:8:13
And she's playful like, but she's like also playful, sort of childlike. In that moment, you just fall in love with her. You There's like a few clips of boo throughout the whole Syria, and you're totally in love with her. Well, I also want

spk_0:   1:8:25
to know where she were. They getting these? Are they buying these in a store? The printing out pictures and framing them? Uh, there's one. I think it's a flashback from the, uh, Penis in Season two, and there's a cutaway and she's holding her and she's got, like, a little hat and glasses are like the dress. You like a little old lady or something. It's just they had fun with that. The little nods to how much they played around with Hillary. Yeah, are super cute,

spk_1:   1:8:50
I mean, and how she always goes back and

spk_0:   1:8:52
gives her, like, Earl Grey e. I need to give her. Okay, So then they end the scene by fleabag looking and going drink, Because again, this is another one of her numbing mechanism. Yeah. Now we're at our school asshole guy's house and is a picture of himself on the wall, which is so my job

spk_1:   1:9:10
on brand. Also, he's like, sorry for the mess and is like, apartment that has nothing in it. Yeah, And he

spk_0:   1:9:17
walks up with the prosciutto on his finger and says, You know, you want some prosciutto with that which I like the way he pushes his finger into her mouth. So gross

spk_1:   1:9:26
she unlike it, nobody likes it.

spk_0:   1:9:27
Also, prosciutto tastes like feet and smells like feet. Look, I don't like prosciutto. I will take your word for it. I have never tried. Oh, I don't like it's okay wrapped on a melon, but constantly def eat. What I also love is that she basically is more interested in the food. And it has, like, a flirting technique like she doesn't really take the bait necessarily. And then he starts kissing her on channel seems annoyed because she's like still chewing her prosciutto.

spk_1:   1:9:50
And I actually thought that was interesting because usually she she's awkward in her normal life. But when she's in the bedroom, she's she's not. She's like, Okay, this is where I shine. I have the power. I'm owning this. But this one she is Yeah, that's weird. Yeah, she coming, You know, she's

spk_0:   1:10:07
not 100% maybe into it. And

spk_1:   1:10:10
I mean, maybe that's

spk_0:   1:10:10
the precursor to the Harry panic like trouble. Like it's already doing what what we want. Yeah, and her talking about, you know, a little more about arsehole guy and how you know he's inaccessible where, she said, utterly inaccessible, relentlessly profound, and that he just wants to sit in the bath and ask questions like, What are you afraid of, which seems at first like, Oh, is he trying to get to know her? He's trying to be deeper than you realize. He has no interest in her answer, which

spk_1:   1:10:34
he's just trying to

spk_0:   1:10:35
be a character of the person he probably thinks he should. Yeah, it's like he write a book about This is what makes a man a grown adult man you should be thinking about

spk_1:   1:10:43
and what I think is interesting is like she clearly isn't thrilled to be there, but she's there and she pursued it nonstop. And that's like, That's addiction, right? Right. Like you don't really, really want it. But you have to go do it like she knows what she's gonna do. Like the therapist says that you already know what you're gonna do. It was like she was going to go have sex with him. Even though it's sort of all signs point to know,

spk_0:   1:11:05
right? Yeah. And you know, he asks, What are you afraid of? And she answers honestly, losing the currency of youth.

spk_1:   1:11:12
Although she thinks she's being like coy and funny and right. No, girl, that's really yeah, and he

spk_0:   1:11:17
and then he has no reaction at all, you know, and he doesn't ask any further questions, and he just was like, Ask me a question. Her question is real deep. When did you realize you were so good looking? But it's funny that he takes it super seriously. It was like I knew as different was about nine and which

spk_1:   1:11:35
to me, almost kind of

spk_0:   1:11:36
is the way someone would answer questions like, when did you realize you were gay? Of you know, like this is his sexuality is just being very handsome. Yes. And then this line about his, you know, around 11 shit got really like ants got weird

spk_1:   1:11:49
like that when you I mean, I thought that was hilarious. I also think that that actor

spk_0:   1:11:55
probably gets so much shit from his friends and

spk_1:   1:11:57
family. Now it's Yeah. Oh, my God. Or his aunt's get shit like Christmas. One of them was weird that year. What did you do to back Daddy X? Right. But then he just

spk_0:   1:12:10
goes, Ask me another question like it's I have a question or something like they're not having a real conversation. And he asked, Do you ever feel lonely? And she's like, Yeah, of course. And then he's going to you and he says, Never.

spk_1:   1:12:22
And I I think this is

spk_0:   1:12:23
interesting because I think you go a couple ways. I think part of it is he's just a dumb dumb has never really thought introspectively. And he's just, you know, he's so in his own head that he doesn't notice. But there are other people around.

spk_1:   1:12:36
Yes, but I feel like there's also

spk_0:   1:12:38
a little bit of. He also is obviously self confident, and we've seen fleabag like she's trying to be around people all the time and she's lonely every time she's around somebody, and that could be lonely. Your loneliness isn't just being alone. You could be lonely with the wrong people, and sometimes it's better to be alone. And she's always with the wrong people, right? And even though she is trying to be with people like she's just relentlessly lonely, whereas I think he maybe just has self confidence and self worth, and

spk_1:   1:13:07
I was not lonely about it. Yeah, maybe I'm giving no actual guy too much credit. I think I see where you're coming from. I also I just think that maybe

spk_0:   1:13:15
he just isn't that deep and that a bird, probably more of it, Otherwise he'd probably know if he was gay because there's questions is actually

spk_1:   1:13:25
gay. I think he's also

spk_0:   1:13:26
he's always just so happy in his own company. He's never yeah, and then do you want some? Pineapple?

spk_1:   1:13:33
Thinks he's being so cool that would that I laughed out loud about what that was like. Yes, but pineapple doesn't make your vagina smell good. Oh, so I read that in Cosmo when I was, like, 17. So that really stuck with fax. It's two years later. You're like what I eat. I You know what? I don't even have Pineapple usually would like that to be go on the record, but I don't know how everything's fine. Fine, fine. Um, and then hey

spk_0:   1:14:10
gets out of the bath and she's just excited to see his his body,

spk_1:   1:14:13
which I like because we see men ogle women's bodies literally every day in all media. And it was kind of refreshing for her to be like a raunchy bro, right? Like CNN. Yeah, CNN. I like that. I was like, Yeah, get a girl like All right, fine. Yeah, well done. This too. She does

spk_0:   1:14:32
get it in the next scene, because now we start wanted. They're having

spk_1:   1:14:35
sex. And this is another case

spk_0:   1:14:37
where there's actually no nudity. Yeah, but the sex feels very graphic and intimate. Me, It's it's graphic ish. I mean, but, uh, but also feels intimate because she's talking to us as all this is happening. So she's separating herself from the situation, right? And Um And then he started talking to her. Her boobs being so small, so small. Where the fuck even are they? And much? Yeah, but much. And a friend of mine has just like, you know, a great way to kill a lady. Boner is too. Make a comment about her body That's not positive and clearly such a thing for her. Oh, yeah, like she

spk_1:   1:15:11
talks about her mom's boobs and her sister's boobs. Yeah, her lack of boobs like this is a thing. Yeah, she's already Saul

spk_0:   1:15:17
conscious about, and he's acting like he's really into it. But then he makes like where the fuck you are, which is another sign. Maybe he's maybe he's just so masculine. And

spk_1:   1:15:26
then he just kind of like, Excuse

spk_0:   1:15:27
me, just like flipping her over and like,

spk_1:   1:15:29
it's not violent, necessarily.

spk_0:   1:15:30
It's just like the like pushes her head down. It's just more of like you're just a body whose

spk_1:   1:15:35
yeah, I hated that. That was so selfish. It was selfish and mean again. It's a little

spk_0:   1:15:40
like he's disconnected from her, too, but and then I mean, we can assume he's maybe going up the bum. He knows that unavailable Avenue. And so but now, as she's like pretending she's enjoying this like life of casual sex is when she's like I'm having a hairy panic. I love the way she phrases that was like, Madame over and be Madame Ovary is telling me to run back to safe place. I could make baby and safe, please, but going to ride it out. Mustn't call here when we get the jump cut to her out with Harry. And it's funny that she has literally comes straight from here because he's like, Why is your hair

spk_1:   1:16:15
shows even shouldn't do anything. She's just probably She probably left him. You guys had coitus. I mean, we're very soon after, but she definitely

spk_0:   1:16:25
was just like I got to get out of here. I'm gonna find Harry like she just went straight there

spk_1:   1:16:31
because he's your comfort zone. Doesn't really like him, but she also knows where her power is in that relationship. She just knows it.

spk_0:   1:16:38
Yeah, and I like when she goes, Uh, were you busy? And he goes, No, I was in the interval and she goes, Oh, cool. Like it doesn't even let him finish of cats. The musical but he

spk_1:   1:16:49
still came. He still came. Yeah,

spk_0:   1:16:51
and he was even out with a girl and he you know, So he's still a little into it. And what he was head of feeling it wasn't going to end well, for the cats, it's probably best that I remember them like that. He's such a baby. Just the fact that he starts crying. And actually, how does Cats and I don't even know cats?

spk_1:   1:17:08
I think it's redeeming because I haven't seen the normal guy, you know? And she sings, doesn't she? Gets reborn the cat lady, The memory, right? Right. She, like, gets on another life. I think a again. I haven't. Well, they're making that were ass

spk_0:   1:17:23
one with Taylor Swift and Jennifer Hudson. What? Yeah, There's anyone That's a movie. Yeah, there's a live action with popular Sweet. Yeah.

spk_1:   1:17:31
Oh, my God. That's gonna

spk_0:   1:17:32
be a trailer is like a drug truth.

spk_1:   1:17:34
I thought she always

spk_0:   1:17:36
looked like a cat. Well, actually, part to play s So she asks, who were you with? And he does work, friend a girl. And she's clearly a little jealous. And the, uh, I found this the dinosaur toy and again he's playing along. Oh, I didn't realize I'd left it.

spk_1:   1:17:53
Which I think I don't actually was surprised that one, because their thing is he leaves the dinosaur behind the bowls in their apartment and he comes and gets it. But she brought it to him. Which one? If she came right from asshole Guys house. She just had it

spk_0:   1:18:09
with you bringing that. Yeah, Or did she stop with the yelling and

spk_1:   1:18:11
what's the deal with that? Right? And also, I was just like, But you're taking away his opportunity to come back. Well, she's just that desperate. Yes, she's just like

spk_0:   1:18:19
the way it she couldn't even away see it and want me right? And, like normally he could. She even says, like I have 48 hours toe like before he comes back and go have all the sexy, But she's already at a point where she's like it's starting to crack like I can't. It's not sustained. Let's be this long or just you, that this that method of getting her self esteem backup is starting to not working. Yeah, so she goes back to Harry, and then, uh, you know, if he's like, if this is about us getting back together. I just need some time and then another jump cut to them in bed together and opposite of hot, misogynist Harry seems really bad at it.

spk_1:   1:18:57
Well, I love it when she's like, he's like she air it was I wish he'd just fuck me. All he wants to do is make love, like barf as a fucking affection. I know. And it does like it seems like he's acting the way that they acted movies that you think you're supposed to have sex. Yeah, that's not really Yeah, I also enjoyed I just She flee back herself is such a good actress because she goes back and forth When he asked her how she issued, he's like, Okay, she looks blissful, right? Like she looks like she's having the time of her life. Yeah, and she's actually

spk_0:   1:19:33
so fucking she's used to being full of shit. Yeah, and that is a very exhausting because he's wasting me. And again, like this is her, like sexual currency, like I'm in the prime of my sexual desire ability, and I'm spending it with this guy who's, like, half asleep was making love. Who's making love to me, but it's also just cause they don't really connect with each other. And then she flashes back to the guy who every time I am, he thrust. He would breathe. You're

spk_1:   1:20:00
so young, you're so young. That one dressing it was That was the

spk_0:   1:20:04
guy that you thought had a break. He doesn't, but

spk_1:   1:20:06
he would would me? He did it something. He has had

spk_0:   1:20:10
a break. He's really gross. And But then she said, she masturbates to that all the time, cause again It's like young, her power, her power. And she's young. And he was like, worshipping. Yeah. Then he brings up that she brings up that she masturbates a lot these days. Like when I'm bored or angry, upset or happy, like basically constantly and again, just numbing her pain at every possible moment. Distraction. Uh, and then

spk_1:   1:20:33
apparently Harry finished. It's I don't know. I don't think the awful subtle I wasn't sure if he did. I thought she just was like by Well, I thought he said something

spk_0:   1:20:41
like that was great or something I don't know. And then I

spk_1:   1:20:45
thought she just pushed him off where it kind of does.

spk_0:   1:20:48
Then eventually cause he goes, you know, like gestures like you know, he's gonna do something for her. And she's like No, no, no. And then she just started masturbating because she doesn't drive any pleasure from him. He's just literally a warm body next to her

spk_1:   1:21:00
and tries to kiss her on the cheek. And he's just like she hates it

spk_0:   1:21:04
so great. She's a getaway for yeah, and I also can have wondering. She was probably masturbating to the year. So young guy, if she just told us that you reminded about, uh, yes. Oh, she's just disgusted by Harry. So then we cut to them, eating maybe the driest toast I've ever heard in my life. Like I think it's meant to be a metaphor for their sex life.

spk_1:   1:21:25
Just like like it's nothing. It's so I think this is a

spk_0:   1:21:30
Lloyd exactly void of anything good. He suggests that they stop masturbating

spk_1:   1:21:36
even though he's doing the

spk_0:   1:21:37
thing where it's like, let's do this together. But it's really about you. It's for us. But it's really about you toe help us focus on each other, meaning you focus on me, and he literally says, be more present, which is a feat. The theme of the show, uh, not automatically. And then he goes really successful couples do it, you know. But

spk_1:   1:21:55
I was like, really fucked us who know this from couples. All the successful couple successful. But you said he's

spk_0:   1:22:01
imagining an image of what it's supposed to be. And then he goes, I've hidden our vibrators and she goes our

spk_1:   1:22:07
which is exactly what I thought everyone was like. Oh, uh, come again what, like either that he had some that

spk_0:   1:22:16
she didn't know about or he's been using hers.

spk_1:   1:22:19
I want to know more. Honestly, maybe Harry's

spk_0:   1:22:21
kinkier than we thought. Then you go save our touches for each other. And

spk_1:   1:22:26
what's funny is that he's not entirely wrong here. He's trying to connect

spk_0:   1:22:30
with her emotionally, and she she's just not available. Not possible.

spk_1:   1:22:34
Yeah, I mean, they're definitely

spk_0:   1:22:35
just not a match, and in a way, I thought it was like a precursor for what the priest is really trying to do of getting her to be more emotionally president acknowledge her vulnerability, but Harry is just much, much worse that Harry doesn't know what to do. Yeah, I think you know, in this case, Harry is suggesting that they limit this aspect of their sex lives. And it kind of parallels with the fact that initially the priest is just sexually unavailable. That's kind of what forces her to just connect with them emotionally. Yeah, Harry, she's already got this, like, sexual relationship. So it's just gonna stay that

spk_1:   1:23:09
way. She's getting what

spk_0:   1:23:10
she wants out of it. Yeah, And then she took I never master made I don't know how

spk_1:   1:23:15
Oh my God, she literally just did it. Yeah, that one was like, Well, you talked about. She's just doesn't take him seriously right on any level. And he's just she's just using him. And I was reading an interview with her in the cut and she said, The thing I really got off on was putting a female character out there That was all knowing about sex and one step ahead. Who knew what the guys were thinking before they thought it and yet still played slightly dumb to them. She's like, Oh, God, it brought me so much blush. But that was I mean it. She definitely she's like playing dumb because she just has the power. She knows he's not gonna address that. She could do whatever she thinks. He's such a doormat. Yeah, right thinks

spk_0:   1:23:59
that he's just gonna keep curling back whenever she wants, because that's been the pattern, right? And then he goes. I think we should try to surprise each other once a day,

spk_1:   1:24:07
achieving those readings from a book, which he clearly is like. He either

spk_0:   1:24:10
has been Googling like How to save a struggling relationship. And these are things that just feel like this will do it, you know. And that's actually kind of masculine of like, I'll solve a problem by looking up

spk_1:   1:24:23
the information. Seven things you can d'oh you save your relationship. I do them and they work right. But I kind of give him some credit for trying.

spk_0:   1:24:32
I feel a little bit, and then that is, he's leaving is like, I'll see you later and says, I'll see you later to her, which you know, which is what a weirdo that was like He's trying. He's trying to be sexy is just No, no. Wear all flea bag in that moment. Uh, so now Claire, we're back at the cafe and Claire pops in, so we have a little bit of a role reversal of when fleabag showed up at her door. Because now she goes, I thought I'd pop by for lunch and I was like, Weird, a bit weird, actually knows that doesn't happen all the time either. And again, quiet day like she knows flea bag was lying about the cafe going well.

spk_1:   1:25:08
You okay? You look stressed. Well, I'm successful. So which is like, Oh, my God, My first reaction

spk_0:   1:25:16
was like clear what a country thing to say. But it's also I think, it speaks to her like she knows she's overstressed and not happy. But she's telling herself, well, all that is worth it because I'm so successful

spk_1:   1:25:28
and I yes, and I saw it as like no, truly, she believed, like truly successful people are stressed out. So this is how it iss what? What I what I would be like? There's no alternative like I'm not like you

spk_0:   1:25:42
just lazing around a cafe all day. Exactly.

spk_1:   1:25:44
You're successful. You'd also be

spk_0:   1:25:45
stressed out Exactly. And it's such a sisterly. Yeah, little dig, you know? And then do you have rye bread? No, but I have some normal bread. You can puke up. After

spk_1:   1:25:55
which I realized she didn't make

spk_0:   1:25:57
the believe me joke to her face the first time. She just said something like She probably stealing anorexic, that clothes look great on. Yeah, and so I think that's, like flee back, having to get back at her for the successful dig

spk_1:   1:26:07
your booklet and clear doesn't flinch. She just it's just addressing her eating disorder is like, yep, or just haven't we

spk_0:   1:26:14
know we're just taking the piss out of each other right now, right? See how British I am?

spk_1:   1:26:18
Yeah, I know. I'm really

spk_0:   1:26:18
impressed. Busting balls would have no love American breaking ball breaking. Yeah,

spk_1:   1:26:24
just breaking balls is breaking your bones, you know? You know how you d'oh, That's how that's how I talk all the time. Although I think this this is what I'm doing now is just the act that I just slipped

spk_0:   1:26:39
into my trainers train yourself. So fleabag is gonna make her some lunch or make her a sandwich and she just wants a tomato sandwich. And I feel like it's like she doesn't trust fleabag with anything more complex than like putting tomatoes on bread.

spk_1:   1:26:50
I thought that it was like she was anorexic and she doesn't eat. Maybe so. And also I read somewhere else because clearly all I do is read and listening, preparing for this, just preparing to give you guys

spk_0:   1:27:05
agree. Viteri in doing your home

spk_1:   1:27:06
welcome. But apparently that's a dig.

spk_0:   1:27:10
Her sister Isabella. Really at a paedo, baby sister, She likes to me

spk_1:   1:27:14
O which is like you. I just don't think that would work at all. Get stuck

spk_0:   1:27:20
with your tongue. You having roof of your mouth moving around? I just realized we're talking at the cafe. You said you had a guinea pig story.

spk_1:   1:27:25
Oh, my God! I D'oh! D'oh! D'oh! D'oh! Big story. Yeah. So I we had we had a number of the pre dog pets, as my mom likes to call them. We had a hamster. We had a bunch of fish. They all died. This one goldfish ate them all. It was kind of actually traumatic. It's a child, but we had a hamster. I mean, I way had a guinea pig named cookies and cream, but cc for short cause that's an absurd name. Okay? And I was like, I think I was, like, eight or nine huh? And this fucking guinea pig lived so long and was so miserable the whole time we tried to play with it. We really, like, wanted to have this pet that we could cuddle with it hang out with, and this guinea pig

spk_0:   1:28:09
fucking hated us, and he just

spk_1:   1:28:11
got really fat. And he wouldn't because he wouldn't, like, play with us. He wouldn't exercise my mom put like, running wheel in his cage so that he would like exercise. Regent looked at us and kicked it over with his back leg like I will never forget. So we took that out because clearly it was just in the way despite, and he really was just unhappy. Duty would like nip a CZ so that we gave up. And then there's this little room in my parents house. That's like it used to be like

spk_0:   1:28:43
the computer room, but like, people don't need those anymore,

spk_1:   1:28:45
right? So wait, just put his is, like, this time little room. And we just put his cage in this room and just, like, not go in there way. Just we're waiting for him to die for, like, five years because he was waiting for him to die. Yeah, but what could you? D'oh! So the room just like, smells like him. Like my mom goes in to change the omicron. Whatever. But finally, I will remember forever. Remember the day that CC died? My God, Because it's celebration. You know, Howie, it was, um I know the exact date that you see that getting died because it was January. Day of my life is the best day of my life. January 5th, 2005. And the reason I know this is because it was my boyfriend at the Times birthday. Okay? And that's the day the pope died. Wow. So cc and John Paul second walked into the pearly gates together. I don't think six he went to heaven. Si, si, si. Lived in hell for a long time. Yeah, that's true. CC paid his dues. Our home was his health. My God, that is hilarious. That's like taking over the sea like, looked at

spk_0:   1:30:04
us, wallow kicked it over there, born shit themselves affair, and I honestly, but just took a long

spk_1:   1:30:09
time for the diaper. Honestly, I think he lived. He lived almost 10 years.

spk_0:   1:30:14
Wow. I don't know what that

spk_1:   1:30:16
we didn't really want him to be alive for, like, eight of those once we knew you kill him. But like, yeah, you could have just gone

spk_0:   1:30:23
the flea background. Squeeze him toe. Wow, that's amazing.

spk_1:   1:30:29
So just buy a dog. That's that's the moral of the story is just forget the pre dog pets. Just buy a fucking dog. Adopt, adopt own job there, you anyway. So now we find

spk_0:   1:30:40
out Claire has basically planned her own surprise party. Like, kind of does this whole fake thing of like could

spk_1:   1:30:46
you just

spk_0:   1:30:46
do it for Friday at 7 30 and, like all act surprised.

spk_1:   1:30:49
But why don't I just

spk_0:   1:30:49
do it, you know? And she's such a control freak that she just doesn't trust the two of them one. Then we find out she's kind of turned into this, like, work event and like just everything, because initially when she goes, you know, I hate surprises and then she runs off, and I feel like it is the combination of I don't like the lack of control of a surprise party, even though I'm also liking the attention of a surprise party which I have only said the same thing. I've always said, like, I think surprise parties or mean because the person thinks everybody has forgotten

spk_1:   1:31:17
about their birthday, waiting for

spk_0:   1:31:19
it to be like they walk in. The person's like, Oh,

spk_1:   1:31:22
my God, are you waiting for that? You're waiting Waiting for that? No, I just feel like I've just seen that wherever he's like, Well, I don't have any plans, remember? I mean, I guess a

spk_0:   1:31:32
good one. It's like, you know, the three of us are gonna go out. You come all right, that's how to do it. That's the best way to do it. But I have always, like, had a secret thing of like I was surprised because I think people think I hate surprise parties and I might clear my God, maybe I'd like one, but

spk_1:   1:31:46
I do. In this case. Hint. Hint, Alley, don't you, Alan, You have a week to plan it. We find out basically, Claire's like I actually it's already done. I've already actually planned. She readily takes time like she has. This whole conversation is assuring. Let it out. Right.

spk_0:   1:32:03
And then finally, just like I've done everything. Claire now sees that all the bills were passed you, which they do have that helpful TV thing of the utility company stamping it like the largest possible letters that it is past D'Oh! Which is like when people read email on movies and stuff and it's like 26.5 so that the whole audience could see what it says.

spk_1:   1:32:24
No, it's always like that. Oh, it I know. Or that, you know, like wise. Oh, exactly. I remember like back in the nineties, like remember the movie?

spk_0:   1:32:32
Just clue was the disclosure was the one with where Michael Douglas was the one who got, like, harassed by to me more. That was Hollywood's hot take on sexual harassment. What does it happen to a man like? We should have known there was a problem. It's a terrible movie, but that was like when email was new and like he opens an email on it like it's an animation of an envelope opening

spk_1:   1:32:53
and it, like, flies on it, flies off like Yeah, like some of those

spk_0:   1:32:57
old nineties tech movies are amazing mail. I mean, well, you but some of them you're just like, Oh, my God. Uh, she

spk_1:   1:33:05
sees other past due. This is a moment where there were so many times

spk_0:   1:33:08
when I was watching fleabag, right, because I've watched so many shows that are not great, that I kept thinking what a lesser show would D'oh! And in a lesser show like Claire would notice the bills and then put them down and just have that information that they're past due. But here she just like boards that out. She's like, Well, if it's money you need, like, how far behind are you? And if it's money you need, just ask me. And again, Claire can't. I mean, fleabag can't admit that she needs the Health Dept. But then charges or 25 for the tomato sandwich. And you know, even Claire, just London

spk_1:   1:33:41
I know brings that back. He knows. But also London. Yeah, those were

spk_0:   1:33:47
some real good tomatoes. Yeah, and then she looks at Hillary. Can't believe that thing's still alive.

spk_1:   1:33:54
A real alley Tauron thing to say. I can't stop about a guinea pig. Hilary seems lovely. Sisi was a bitch. It's easy with a dick. Uh, just such a dick. It's just like one little

spk_0:   1:34:09
last dig before she goes like I can't believe you've kept this thing alive.

spk_1:   1:34:12
That one hurt a little because I think Claire is sort of trying to be sensitive to her situation, but she digs the one. So the real sore spot, Yes. Mentioning death and beginning like I was, like, clear because we know

spk_0:   1:34:29
who's not still alive, which is Yeah, I remind you. And then any news on Harry, like again? Let me just pick out that scab for a while. And then

spk_1:   1:34:39
So then you know that they're back together, back

spk_0:   1:34:41
together, right before we know they're gonna break up ago. So now she comes home, sees the table set, forgot. She has obviously totally forgotten about the surprise. They're gonna surprise each other, and then the music kicks in, and she's like, assembling quickly, which the music is so good. Like it's perfect, perfect energy. And so now she finds like the shirt that she put over her head like a ninja mask and a knife walks into the shower X. Here's Harry. The shower scares the fuck out of him, obviously. Like

spk_1:   1:35:09
what almost gonna happen? That's what I wanna know. If you know Harry. Yes. What? Come on. But I can I think she kind of knew. I don't know what I think. It's funny. Like what? She self

spk_0:   1:35:21
sabotage like she really was just kind of doing something far. How far can I go? Absolutely.

spk_1:   1:35:27
I mean, she's a fucking crazy person. I saw her. She didn't interview with Jimmy Fallon in 2016 right after or maybe 2017 like after the first. Okay, okay. And she said the sea She said, the scene with Harry and the showers her favorite scene of the whole season. And she said it actually really happened at the time she was married. So okay, it actually really happened with her ex husband was Apparently they got usedto like jumping out of each other, Keep a magic alive. And and he did it to her in the shower, like in her own world. And he comes in with a butcher's knife and a T shirt and she, like she said, she little said. She said, I broke. I haven't showered since.

spk_0:   1:36:09
So Harry is obviously terrified and says, I thought I was gonna get raped, which I feel like it's a thing a woman would think. Yes, at an intruder. I'm not that men that can't happen. Mm No, but it just kind of lines up with Harry. And then she says it

spk_1:   1:36:25
was a ninja surprise. And I was funny that you mentioned

spk_0:   1:36:30
that that had happened with her ex husband because I in the, um I just read the play last night. So obviously all my head, But in the special edition, they have, like a conversation between her and Vicky Jones, kind of just talking about dry right and about the development of the fleabag. And they said that they used to have a rule when they're evaluating scenes called the Surprise Ninja Rule. And the idea was that if a scene could be improved by a surprise ninja coming in and starting to fight everybody than the original scene was not good enough was not interesting enough, so I wasn't sure if that was also a nod to that. She's really into the ninja surprise,

spk_1:   1:37:06
and I didn't want to add that when with regards to the rape comment, I hate that I, like, laughed at a rape joke. But I do think that we need to take some ownership of it, and I also that's what she's about is like I wanted to be like, Oh, it's not funny, but well, but it's not. It's not saying

spk_0:   1:37:27
that rape is funny. Oh, Zanny that. It's funny that Harry, that was his first thought, exactly is that that was what was gonna happen

spk_1:   1:37:34
exactly. And she wants you to think about these things that actually, yeah, then So I don't know. And then he starts crying. And Esther, are you okay? And apparently that's what Phoebe did. Oh, really? When her ex husband did it, her she she was like, I'm I'm sorry. It was a good look. Like Like I'm sorry. I'm reacting. So I'm sorry for being so shocked by it. I thought I was gonna

spk_0:   1:37:56
horrifying thing that you just did. Now Harry is crying through tears

spk_1:   1:38:00
because it was a good joke.

spk_0:   1:38:02
And I know Phoebe has said that's their favorite. Seen other people of the scene.

spk_1:   1:38:06
I don't like, you know, maybe I didn't love it because I think I'm too empathetic. And I just was like, Well, Harry, Yeah, I kind of was just like, you know, at this point, I mean, I guess

spk_0:   1:38:16
we're not supposed to like her number. We're seeing these these angles of her

spk_1:   1:38:20
I just didn't find it funny. I did. I empathize too much with hair. It was like he was so terrified. He was so terrified. And he's trying to do

spk_0:   1:38:27
all these nice things for her. Like he really is making an effort. And she

spk_1:   1:38:31
just comes in. Just scares the shit out of such a psycho thing to Dio. Yeah, just like a And I know. I guess we're like, you say we're supposed to

spk_0:   1:38:37
think it was too much and that she's, you know, pushing it like you said, Right? Um, so, yeah, I don't know. It's not my faith. Uh, but he is obviously just still in shock because he owns, like,

spk_1:   1:38:48
I'm okay screaming. That was horrible. And she's like, it was a surprise. He's like, I know. Thank you. Thank you for this trauma

spk_0:   1:38:58
that I might have the rest of my life.

spk_1:   1:38:59
It was like, thank you for trying, I guess. But then

spk_0:   1:39:02
and she goes, I go get us some wine and which is obviously to go steal some and then another instance of

spk_1:   1:39:10
this is the last time. Like she's done this so many times. So now we come

spk_0:   1:39:14
back and Harry is kind of coming to a senses of like Okay, that was really fucked up. And it's funny that he's sitting there with a towel wrapped on his head like a woman, like a very feminine thing. And then looking

spk_1:   1:39:24
at his computer history because he had

spk_0:   1:39:25
to find something he was gonna buy on the H and M website, which I think is, I think, like a woman, very funny.

spk_1:   1:39:31
And then I don't want to

spk_0:   1:39:32
point fingers and six stand up for yourself Harry, who couldn't. And he reads this list of porn categories that she's been searching, which I was like,

spk_1:   1:39:42
Did she leave with how she went on and on and

spk_0:   1:39:45
on on? And it also kind of includes things that allude to people like like Gang Bang, which kind of ties with Martin than anal and big and small tits, which is like our soul guy. And yeah, it's this huge list and it is kind of when she's like, Why are you being

spk_1:   1:40:01
suspects? Like she can't she can't take it at all, cannot

spk_0:   1:40:05
experience emotion in any real way. And when he goes, don't make me hate you. Loving you is painful enough

spk_1:   1:40:11
which is a good line,

spk_0:   1:40:12
and it's it's funny that she knows he's mad, but she also knows him so well. And I think we can relate to that. When you're in the middle of fine, you're like, Oh, let me just tell you this one thing right back and we'll get back to

spk_1:   1:40:23
the site were also in a relationship. But right now, but right, Yeah, but I know this about you. It shows again how distant she is from her life because she didn't even she's not even in the emotion of it, right? She's just immediately like,

spk_0:   1:40:35
Oh, no, But yeah, let's disconnect for a second for you, right?

spk_1:   1:40:40
And cut through the tension. You know, it was it was good, like he kind of

spk_0:   1:40:44
knows she's right. He's like, Okay, let me write this down.

spk_1:   1:40:46
But he's but he's so obviously

spk_0:   1:40:48
having this inner conflict while he does it right. And then he says, there's someone at work who loves me, and it took me like the third Watch before I realized that this is Elaine and who eventually marries and has a baby with, and we meet at the sex position and then what he looks up and says, Do you want to be alone? And the fact that that has just left her speechless? No, cause it's either acknowledging that she is alone. Like, I think in her head she thought, No, I'm I'm doing great, right? And yeah, And it is maybe a little bit like Is the answer, Yes and no. Like for just than faced with the prospect that she could be alone, you know, like

spk_1:   1:41:29
Or maybe maybe when she's with hair issues, still alone, totally

spk_0:   1:41:36
right. She's realizing that she's just really isolated and when he does, I'll always love you. But I just can't take it anymore. I don't hate you. I'm scared for you and I mean, it's Harry has been made out to be this kind of doofus character, but he's saying things that were true. And again, it kind of reminds me later with the priest when he's saying, Look, I'm just trying to help you like they realized that she needs help, but Harry just doesn't have the tools to do it, and they don't connect on any real level, either.

spk_1:   1:42:04
He doesn't have

spk_0:   1:42:05
the tools to take care of his own motion. Yeah, right. He's so don't take on anybody, exactly. So I think it's like these first hints of like people trying to help her, but maybe not knowing how to do that with her. And then he says, You're gonna go pack up my stuff I'm not gonna clean And at first I kind of took it is like I'm taking a stand like I'm not gonna clean that. He's like it's still in pretty good shape because I just did it.

spk_1:   1:42:30
He's just being realistic, break

spk_0:   1:42:32
up with so recent, and then when he says good bye forever and she's kind of again like he doesn't mean it. And then he makes that point to come back and grab the dinosaur on your heart breaks and they both know what it means, and we know what it means. And this is such a brilliant device because she's taken something that was just this for comedic effect in like comic relief. And now it really has wait about what it means. And so when she just looks in, you know, scoffs at the camera and is obviously just crying, trying to keep a brave face,

spk_1:   1:43:02
even tow us. It's like she's she's not honest with herself because we are her thoughts, right? Yeah. She kind of still has

spk_0:   1:43:09
a look like, uh who This is different. Yeah. And then just that cut into that that music. And like the her world started just crack a little bit,

spk_1:   1:43:18
I think when that one cut, I just took this big breath. Yeah, I know. I haven't been breathing. Okay? It was kind of almost

spk_0:   1:43:26
a strange moment to cut on because it was just like her. Kind of having a realization, like recovering. Yeah, right. Yeah. And but But also a good tease. Now, to the next of like, okay, her world is changing and you want to keep seeing how so That brings us to

spk_1:   1:43:42
the end. We did it. Oh, Episode two

spk_0:   1:43:45
