Facing Your Prostate (Exam): Dr. Mistry Explains the Importance of Physical Prostate Exams and the Need for Prostate MRI's

Dr. Sandeep Mistry and Donna Lee

Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.

In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee explain the importance of the prostate exam in urologic medicine. While many people assume the purpose of the physical, internal prostate exam (where a finger is inserted into the rectum to feel the prostate) is to determine it's size, in fact, 70% of size estimates based on physical exams are incorrect. The only way to truly know the size of the prostate is through an MRI.

The purpose of the physical exam is actually to feel for nodules or other abnormalities that may indicate the presence of prostate cancer. While unpleasant, this exam is an indispensable tool in the urologist's toolkit. In addition to physical exams and MRI imaging, blood tests that reveal elevated levels of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) may also indicate the presence of prostate cancer. Together, these methods of examining the prostate are essential in evaluating and maintaining prostate health.

The most important thing for men to do is to confront their prostate health, rather than denying or avoiding the presence of abnormalities. The medical team at NAU Urology Specialists is dedicated to making this process as painless as possible for our patients. If you or a loved one are unsatisfied with the prostate tests and/or treatment that you've received elsewhere, please give us a call to schedule the best second opinion you'll ever receive on your prostate health!
