Singer I - Lesson Excerpt (4/20/07)

Cornelius L. Reid Season 4 Episode 11

Comment: In this lesson, one can hear a lighter, more tenor-like quality to the voice. Up to this point, this singer had sung exclusively as a baritone.

Quote: Everyone has heard of tenors who have become baritones, baritones who have become tenors, and, as was true with one singer who performed with the Metropolitan Opera Company, mezzo-sopranos who later sang coloratura rules. How? The answer to this question lies within the registration. Whereas a voice properly belongs to one classification and no other, an extreme shift from one type of register domination to another alters the range, resonance, intensity, and textural properties of the voice. This frequently enables the performer to choose between two possibilities of adjustment, one making the voice weightier, the other more lyric. (The Free Voice)
