#317 - Reigniting Passion: Bouncing Back After a Vacation,
Jul 19, 2024 Episode 317
Benja Welldone

Ever felt like your vacation threw a wrench into your well-oiled routine? That's exactly what happened to me after an incredible six-day trip to Boston. I went from the joy of exploring a vibrant new city to the tough reality of getting my disciplined life back on track. From waking up at 4 AM, daily exercise, and constant comedy writing, my routine was tight. But the break disrupted everything, leaving my body and focus in a state of chaos. Listen in as I share the mental and physical battle of regaining that lost momentum and the drive that fuels my goals and ambitions.

Balancing the thrill of a vacation with the need to stay motivated is no easy task. The trip was fantastic, but it came at the cost of my daily regimen. Now, I'm back and hungrier than ever to get back into comedy, get booked for shows, and achieve my goals. I'll take you through the mixed emotions of returning to routine, the importance of staying hungry even when you're out of sync, and the fire you need to light under yourself to keep moving forward. Tune in to hear how I'm reigniting my passion and pushing through distractions to keep my dreams alive.

Speaker 1:

What's up everybody. So now that I am back from my six-day amazing trip from Boston, I am getting back into the groove of things and I hate it. I love getting back into the groove of things, but I hate that. I was out of my groove. You know, I feel like the best way to really optimize your performance and your day is to have a regimented routine, and my routine is very regimented. I start my morning at a certain time, around 4am. I go to bed after 10. That may not be the best from what people say, but I get tons of rest and I feel great. I exercise, I wrestle, I do jujitsu, I'm always writing comedy. I literally did not do any of those things.

Speaker 1:

So now my body is sort of acting all funky and you know that is. It's such a weird thing when you're in a hotel, because you're in a different place, you don't have a fridge, your diet's different, everything is wrong. But now I'm trying to make it right and I feel like my body and my focus and everything is like out of whack. You know what I mean, but as long as I know, my ass is in the place that I need to be, whether it's underneath a pull up bar or in my chair working on comedy or talking to people trying out new ideas. I know I'm doing the right thing, but, man, there's just something about like momentum. There's just something about like getting all your cylinders firing, you know, and there's actually a really great book called like At habits and basically the emphasis is what I'm saying it's not just having your routine, but not breaking that routine. And when you do, man, I really do feel like you take several steps back and that's the biggest disadvantage of taking a vacation and one of the things that I hate the most about, uh, breaking my routine. You know, for those six days, did I enhance my uh vacation and have all sorts of fun? Yeah, but it came at a price. It came at a price of me not being able to do things that I love the most. You know, it's a weird balance because I feel like the diversity of what you do on vacation uh, you know, which could be none of the things that you actually do, which could be none of the things that you actually do there's actually like a healthy balance. It's like your mind gets to take a break, but Too many days. Six days. It was the best vacation I've ever had, and I've been to different places and beaches in Brazil and Italy and stuff like that. But it was just something about it. It just it felt so great. I loved Boston, it was an amazing place.

Speaker 1:

And now I'm back at my house and I kind of feel like I'm a little confused. I kind of feel like, what do I do? What was the last thing that I was doing? How do I get this ball rolling again? So I think, after about like a week or so, um, I'll slowly start to like dial in and be more precise.

Speaker 1:

But man, I'm just so hungry for it. I'm so hungry and aggressive to work on comedy, get booked again for more shows, and the sky's really the limit. But I have so much. I have so much not just that I'm thankful for, but that I'm like on attack mode. You know what I mean. I have all these goals and I'm just ready to crush through all of them. But yeah, the hunger staying hungry while you're on vacation, it's kind of a hard thing to do. But I'm back and I've been hungry for my goals. It's just without talking in circles too much, you know, you sort of got to light a fire underneath your ass to get motivated again and I stay motivated. But, man, it is such a distraction being on vacation. But again, it's weird. It's a balance because it's a good distraction. But I'm here, I'm back and I'm working on my comedy and last night I was up to like 11, 1130 working on my writing and I got all these new ideas. And then today I went to a few different places.

Speaker 1:

Typically, when I work on comedy, I like to work on it live and in person, after I memorized it, the writing, and I just go up to random people and I don't tell them like it's a magic trick to like not build up their anticipation of me saying something funny, but I just start talking to them about a concept and if I know if I'm laughing at them, I mean, excuse me if they're, uh, if they're laughing at my concept or idea or point or something that I'm making, if I say it's a joke, they might be like prepared to laugh. They might, you know, kind of even be a little standoffish. But if I just say hey, and I just start talking to them about something that's the effect that I've found, found that works the best for me. And when I'm prepping for a show, I tell people that I'm a comedian and I have some jokes and I want to see if I can make you laugh, and at that point people are actually taken back because they like the fact that I'm a professional and they also like the fact that they get free comedy. So it wins for everybody. It's a win-win.

Speaker 1:

But anyway, I'm back. I worked on jokes last night, writing them out some stories that happened in Boston and I tested them out today at a few different stores that I went to department stores. And now I'm getting up from the backlog, so to speak, and I got one more, which is going to be my fresh one, to be caught up for this week, because this technically would be last week's. Again, I'm a little behind, but I'm getting caught up, but anyway, I hope everybody has a beautiful day. I'm Ben Joel Dunn, check me out. Peace.
