Happy New Year, Everybody, you're listening to Craig and Sell and our podcast career growth made easy. Today's show title. Four year degree not required. Maybe it applies to you if you're one of 46 million Americans with college credit, but don't have your degree. Those stats came from an ad on Hu Lu TV recently. In fact, November 2019 maybe some of those people chose not to finish college. Some of them, maybe they're in progress. Some could have changed their aspirations. If you're one of 46 million Americans, why did you begin college in the first place? What goals did you have? What targets did you have in mind? Did you do it because it was the norm? Basically, you finished high school, and it was the next thing to do the next logical, the next educational step or where you not decided you weren't ready on a job or career path and thought I need some more time to grow mentally, physically, emotionally. There's good news, though. Business leaders, such a seaman's USA CEO Barbara Hampton and Apple's CEO Tim Cook, both are starting to question the need for four year degrees when creating job positions. In fact, job requisitions that require four year degree aren't always aligned with the skill set that's required, meaning that the requirement of a four year degree could potentially filter out a possibly qualified candidate. Both Google and Apple are hiring based on skills needed, whether you do or do not have a four year degree. The same seems to be trending unlinked in as we go into 2020. Back in Episode two, we talked about resumes and their importance, and we looked at all the details needed and specifics that should be on a resume to make sure truly showcases you and your skill sets, and that you're the right candidate for the job that you provide value. However, recently I saw an Amazon job posting in the U. S. And it did not require a resume looking further. Some positions did not even require an interview. Can you believe that they had something rather instead called a hiring event that you would attend? My point? Here times are changing. There's a difference, though, when we talk about education, whether you do or don't have a four year degree, and there's a difference between hard and soft skills. I would say hard skills are defined as something that's teachable, something that's measurable. It essentially is like reading, writing. And we used to say arithmetic or math and your abilities, such as an example of how to use a computer or how to program on a computer. Soft skills, I would say, are more about you and your makeup, how you function and how you interact on your job. There's Ike, You and E que also I Q stands for intelligence quotient and e Q stands for emotional quotient. Why am I bringing up all this stuff? Well, you could be book smart, the Ike you part of it. But you might not be e que smart. You're a listener here. You likely want to grow. You might be growing both your I Q and e que, depending on what your focus is. If I told you a majority of what we're educating you on is communication, you'd probably laugh and say, Wow, a podcast on communication. Let me be the 1st 1 to sign up for that, right? Boring. The reality is 90% I would say of our date. We spend communicating and you know there's the different types verbal written email, body language. Just the list goes on back in Episode one to give an idea, I introduced myself and I verbalized it through giving my background in Episode two. Talking about resumes, we showed how we communicate our background in our experiences in our history, along with our intent to fill a job on paper. On a resume. Episode three was titled Overloaded, and it focused on work, email and texting. The point behind that episode was that our bodies had a limited amount of energy every day and that energy runs down if we get overloaded and it could become unhealthy. Episode four I asked you if you were one out of 32 and really, what I asked you there was. How are you choosing to spend your time? How are you choosing your time to educate and absorb information? It could be from an audiobook, a podcast like this one, or you could be rating hard and soft cover books. Then there's old fashioned classrooms and regular study as well as online Episode five Junk drawer. It had a double meaning, and the second meaning was your mental junk drawer. There's lots of stuff running around in your head. My point here is all that stuff. At one point, another. You heard it or you saw it or you walk through the process and it filled your brain. You've recognized it and stored it. Episode six rounds out with, say yes less. This was about us communicating our self awareness of our workloads in our jobs and try not to become overloaded. And if we are to slowly communicate our workload in a clear, respectful manner so that we can cut down on it, be more effective and more efficient, focusing on our task and completing them rather than feeling like you have an overwhelming burden on overwhelming pile that you'll never get through and never succeed. Episode seven was cool. We wish you a happy New Year, and I want to thank everybody, all the listeners out there today as well as at the beginning of the year for being there. Episode eight just finished that titled Toxic People, and this is how people can communicate to us negatively and how they can affect us just by being on the negative side of things back to this show title. So if you're one of 46 million Americans or for that matter, living elsewhere and you don't have a college degree, there is hope. First we need to believe in ourselves. Second, we need to set goals and targets. And third, I would say Get out there and take some action. The good news is, as I've shared before, we're here to help. If you remember some of the taglines I used at the end of the show, we helped turn problems into potential and issues in the opportunities. In nearly all cases, you can take something that's bad or negative situation and rework the wording. So it's probably comes out the least negative, or at least in a partial, positive statement. It doesn't mean that the situation still isn't there or didn't happen to you. But rather than say, Oh, I lost my job or I'm fired, I'll never make it in the world. Choose it a different way to look at it and say, Hey, I lost my job. Let me see what other opportunities are out there, right? Just turn it into factual rather than emotional. We talked earlier about the four year degree not being required. But there are so many millions of people out there that are, um, have college credit, but not yet have the degree. Don't let that limit you. You can choose if you're close to getting your degree to go back and finish a couple of those courses A couples classes. If you're in the early stages, you could reevaluate your plans and see if college is right for you. Maybe you say, Hey, it's a longer goal. A longer term. Ah, approach out there. I'm gonna take one, maybe two courses a year, and I'm just gonna take it slow and easy, and I'm going to get that degree. I'm gonna get that goal. Heck, maybe you're going to be the 1st 1 in your family to get a college degree back to hard skills and soft skills for hard skills. Sometimes we put too much emphasis on where we're going to get our degree from or where somebody got their degree from. Sure, many of you have been to the doctor and you need help. You might be sick with the flu or a fever, you know, had an injury and possible broken bone. I don't think any of us? The first questions out of our mouth were Hey, Doc, where'd you get your degree, or Hey, doc, what was your GP A? It's gonna be more like, Hi. Can you help me? I have this pain or this problem and the same thing to for lawyers, you know, professional type situations. Most of us look out for somebody that's gonna help us and solve our problems or assist us. And the first thing in my mind doesn't pop out. Gosh, I hope they went to School X, or I hope they got a G p A. Above. Why, talking about the world job market as we're seeing its needs based qualifications important. And it's really critical now that companies don't put overly exceeding requirements on the job requisitions. Otherwise, as we talked about earlier, it could filter out potentially qualified candidates and reduce the pool For good candidates. Talking about soft skills shows like this podcast can help increase your soft skills. This episode should have helped you increase your awareness of job market trends out there as we go into 2020. I never would have imagined for a minute that we're going to say, resumes air not required to apply for certain jobs. And then to further that some companies, as we discussed earlier, our not even requiring a job interview. So this is the time for change. As we enter the new year, we're here to serve you don't let problems or issues stand in your way. Turn your problems into potential and your issues into opportunities. If you feel stuck out there or know somebody that is, please share this podcast and information with them. It is 100% free, and we want to help us many people as we can.
